Truth about our Skin Being just 10 degrees from the equator, Singapore receives a great amount of ultraviolet radiation which puts us at a high risk of skin damage. Signs of damage to the skin are similar to the aging process where fine lines, age spots and freckles, may appear.

The greatest fear of all is skin cancer. Chronic exposure to UV rays may trigger growth of skin tumours. Though some of these are benign, others may be cancerous and must be removed early. According to the World Health Organization, one in every three cancers diagnosed is a skin cancer.

Two common forms of skin cancer are the Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC) and Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC). BCC is a slow growing skin cancer that commonly occurs on the head and neck areas which often presents as a painless shiny papule with a pearly edge. SCCs are usually of irregular border, with red, scaly papules. These can grow quickly and often show on face, chest and arms.

Malignant Melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, arise from the pigment cells of the skin. It can occur on any parts of the body including the palms and soles. Melanomas are prevalent among Caucasians as well as those with a family history or have excessive exposure to UV rays.

Assessment, Treatment and PreventionTo help identify characteristics of unusual moles that may indicate skin cancers, think of the letters ABCDE:• Asymmetric skin growths • Border irregularity• Changes in colour • Diameter more than 6mm (diameter of a pencil eraser)• Evolving (size, shape, colour, elevation, symptoms like itchiness or bleeding)

The signs above should be further assessed by a Dermatologist. Not all skin tumours cause pain, and they also have the potential to spread to other organs. Hence investigations such as blood tests, biopsies and imaging studies may be needed.

For high-risk BCC and SCC, Mohs micrographic surgery offers up to 99% cure rate. This technique is also tissue sparing as only tumour-involved areas are removed, hence effective in maximizing cosmetic and functional outcome for areas around the eyes, nose and mouth. In situations whereby excision is unfeasible, radiotherapy, photodynamic therapy or topical therapy may be used. Metastatic skin cancer may also require systemic chemotherapy or immunotherapy to slow or stop the spread of malignant cells.

Most skin cancers are curable if diagnosed and treated early. To fight against skin cancer:• Avoid deliberate tanning and the sun between 10:00 A.M. and 4:00 P.M.• Wear protective clothing including wide-brimmed hats, umbrellas and sunglasses.• Use a broad spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30.• Monitor skin regularly for abnormal growths and seek medical attention early.

FAQ’s/Important Information

Tara Eastep

April just might be the last moment of quiet before the end of the school year scurry begins. Maybe you have one last holiday planned for Spring Break offering a chance for rest and relaxation before thoughts of summer trips home, going away parties, packing up or settling in for another year begin to creep up on us. For the AWA, all hands are on deck for our last major event of the club year!

Without a doubt, April is one of the most exciting months in the AWA as the highly anticipated Fashion Show takes center stage on Friday, April 21st at the Park Royal Hotel on Beach Road. This year’s theme is Glamour By the Bay. Our Fashion Show Chair extradionaire, Mel Rice, returns for a second year, to continue the tradition of a stunning day of fashion, shopping and fabulous fun. Her team, consisting of Lori Nowak, Machelle Robbins, Stephanie Nguyen, Emily Ludwick, Silke Ahlden and Yvonne Blackwood, have been working for months lining up sought after designers, recruiting models and backstage assistants and securing incredible vendors. It is always a sold out event and always incredibly entertaining. I hope to see many of you there this year!

Right on the heels of our Fashion Show, is the Annual Volunteer Appreciation and Annual General Meeting. This year the event will be held at the British Club on Tuesday, May 2nd. Our theme this year is “Hats Off to Our Volunteers.” Mark your calendars and start shopping for that one of a kind hat or fascinator. It is a great time to celebrate the efforts of the volunteers of our organization, vote for the upcoming year’s slate of officers and mingle with friends. We have many experienced board members returning to the Board for the 2017-18 club year as well as a couple of new faces. Another amazing year for the AWA is in the works and will be led by an experienced, dedicated group of talented ladies.

Speaking of volunteers… I would like to give a huge and loud shout out to Lori Nowak. Lori is the AWA Major Events Chair. She is always quietly working behind the scenes on EVERY major event. She has a role on every major events committee and it changes depending on the needs of that particular event. This requires incredible flexibility and organization on her part. Lori is unflappable, happy to stay out of the limelight but always brightening up any room, event or meeting with her smile and infectious laugh. All of our major events go off without a hitch because of the dedication of Lori and each of our extremely hard working Major Events Chairs. Thank you for the part you play in making the AWA so amazing. The major events we organize yearly, truly make our organization unique and special in the Singapore expat community!

I hope you all have a beautiful April and I look forward to seeing you at an upcoming activity or event!

There is one thing all AWA SG members have in common: at one time, we were all new to this little, red dot. Adapting to a foreign country is not easy. Those first few months are filled with questions about how to make a life here. When you move so far away, you need a person you can call to ask those important and not so important questions. People need an AWA buddy.

How can you help? By signing up to be a buddy, of course! We want to put together a network of volunteers who will help new members one-to-one via email, phone, or face-to-face for a period of 2-3 months. If you are interested in being an AWA buddy or would like more information, contact Laurie Day at [email protected]

N e w c o m e r s N e t w o r kBy Becky Matakas

The Class of 2017I’ve been in Singapore long enough to see many lovely people leave Singapore to move on to their next place. Some friends have headed to another expat assignment, and some have returned to their home country. New friends appear, and the cycle of the expat life continues. Now that I’ve been here for a couple of years, though, saying farewell has become more frequent, it seems. It occurs to me that the expat life is a lot like being in school.

As freshmen expats, we arrive, wide-eyed, excited, and nervous, having recently made the choice to move our lives to an unknown place. This is the first of many experiences we will share with others in our expat class. We all have to learn how to get from one place to another efficiently and hopeful that we won’t arrive dripping with sweat. We have to figure out where to do our shopping and where to find that one thing that makes us feel at home. We have to learn when to leave the house so we aren’t late. And, just like in school, unless we make the effort, we need to reach out to others in our class to celebrate our victories and share in our frustrations. For me, through AWA, I was able to find a fantastic group of friends who arrived around the same time with whom I’ve shared many of the ups and downs of being the freshmen in town.

As freshmen expats, we get to rely on the wisdom of the upperclassmen when we are confused or need advice. As sophomores and juniors, whether we have been here for two years or ten, we get comfortable. We know the ropes. In Singapore, we can navigate things like getting a drivers license or finding a doctor or dentist. We know which meal delivery service we prefer, which bar has the best ladies night, which bus will get us there quickly and how long it’ll take. Best of all, we can pass down our wisdom to the newbies coming in! One of the reasons I love attending the weekly AWA coffees is for the exchange of information that happens. Not only can I ask the other ladies for advice on something I know nothing about, I can also offer my opinions and recommendations to ladies who are new to the neighborhood.

Finally, as seniors (knowing we will be leaving soon) we can celebrate the experience we’ve had! We’ve gone through all of the growing pains. We’ve accomplished so much during our time here. We’re ready to move on and tackle whatever our next move has in store.

When we graduate from life in Singapore to life in a new place, the cycle of expat life continues and also begins again. For those of you leaving soon (especially the “fab five” ;) ), congratulations! Know that the bond that you’ve formed with your closest friends her in Southeast Asia will be lifelong!

Onward!

BT Writers Wanted!Sadly, in the coming months, as their families are moved away from Singapore, the Bamboo Telegraph is going to be losing a couple of our dedicated contributing writers. We will miss their unique voice, but we wish them all the best as they start a new phase in their expat journey.

Their depatrue does, however, open up the opportunity for fresh new writers to join the BT each month. If you are a writer or blogger and are interested in volunteering as a contributing writer to the Bamboo Telegraph, we’d love to hear from you! We are looking for series articles (10 issue/year) and ad-hoc pieces that would appeal to our diverse membership. If interested, please contact [email protected].

We look forward to hearing from you!

Volunteering with AWAAWA is a volunteer run organization. We can only do what we do with the participation of an army of wonderful volunteers! They give freely of their time to provide fun events and activities for us all to participate in as well as working in the office, producing the BT magazine and serving on the Board. As a member you are strongly encouraged to volunteer your time to keep the AWA running smoothly. Whether you are interested in learning a new skill or continuing to use a well-honed talent AWA has a place for you.

The following opportunities are currently available:AWA Marketing Team Members: One of our goals this year is to have a more focused approach to our marketing and promotion of events. We have developed a strategy and now are looking for volunteers to help us implement our plan. If you have experience in marketing/PR or sales or you have no experience at all but just an interest or desire to volunteer, then we would love it if you could assist us in achieving our vision for the AWA. The amount of time you volunteer can be both flexible and varying depending on your availability. Please email [email protected] if you are interested.

AWA Ambassador Call ListDo you have a little time to help spread the word about the AWA? We have many opportunities for AWA ambassadors - either for a couple of hours at an AWA membership booth, by helping us reach out to new mums at your child’s school, by posting our events on your condo noticeboard, or by helping us contact company HR departments. If you are happy to go on our Volunteer Call List, please email [email protected] if you are interested.

Local Tours CommitteeWe are seeking energetic and organized individuals who desire to see the “other side” of Singapore. Our tour volunteers liaise with hired professional tour guides and AWA members to facilitate tours to “off beaten-path”cultural locations. Volunteers who lead the tours do not pay for the tour they lead. From Peranakan shophouses, Armenian Teahouses and Indian Festivals, the Local Tours committee is the group to join if you want to discover the rich cultural side of Singapore. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

ach COMMUNITY

OUTREACHSpotlight on AWA’s work with Singapore’s People’s Association

by Seema SutradharAs a relatively new AWA member last year, I got involved with Community Outreach programs. My interests led me to activities where AWA engages with the People’s Association on community integration programs. Improving neighborliness and promoting cultural exchanges are two focus areas for People’s Association (PA). To promote this, PA organizes a broad range of programs with the help of various Grassroot Organizations (GROs) and the Integration and Naturalization Champions (INCs), and AWA has joined several of these programs.

In March and October 2016, AWA joined networking sessions organized by PA that brought together Immigrant Associations like AWA. I attended one in October 2016. It was a great opportunity to learn about so many other social organizations that are working in Singapore, the countries they come from and their communities.

In the networking session, apart from learning about People’s Association and its key projects, I learnt about the programs produced by the other attending participants’ organizations. We held a brainstorming session intended to uncover ideas to see which collaborative programs might be popular among the participants. Members shared new ideas on the ways to bring people together from different communities for shared cultural experiences. New connections were easy to find, and since then, AWA members have enjoyed participating in events hosted by other Immigrant Associations.

As a result of further collaboration with PA, AWA has also taken part in several other projects organized by GROs and INCs called “Happy Projects”.

For example, one recent Happy Projects was the Henderson-Dawson Chinese New Year Reunion Lunch that took place on January 27th, 2017. The lunch was organized for the benefit of elderly citizens who don’t have family in Singapore. AWA volunteers helped with registration, carrying dishes from the kitchen to the tables, and serving the food family style. Then they participated in the variety show. They sang and danced with other guests and befriended the elderly.

“My husband and I felt honored to be spending the day at the Henderson Community Center. It was a pleasure sharing in the festivities, serving the many traditional courses for Chinese New Year and even dancing with some of the local elders. As we do not have our families here with us and many of them do not have family to spend the holiday with, we felt fortunate to be included in the community and look forward to more opportunities like this.”

- Aja Kimura, AWA volunteer

Another Happy Project was the Tampines North Festive Wishes Come True program, held in November 2016. AWA Volunteers met with and helped underprivileged families from the Tampines area. They interacted with the children at the Community Center and then escorted the children to a local bookstore where they were given coupons to purchase Christmas gifts for themselves. The members helped them shop, manage their budget, and then collected their purchases so that they could be wrapped and given to them at Christmas.

“The organizers matched me with three young sisters, and all three used their coupons to buy supplies that they needed for school. When I asked them if they were happy with their purchases, they jumped for joy and explained that it was the first time they’ve ever owned new school supplies. All their school supplies before had been handed

down from cousins and neighbors. I’m glad I could be there to help them get the best value for their dollars.”- Kerry Driver, AWA Volunteer

The Tanjong Pagar One Community Feista in October 2016 was a Halloween-themed fair and AWA also volunteered for a Happy Project that occurred at that event. This time AWA Volunteers were matched with children of low-income families who were bussed into the fair. The AWA volunteers had special passes and they escorted the children through the fair, enabling them to enjoy the activities for free, including a haunted house, a train ride, and carnival games.

“It was a blessing to me to be able to be part of something in the local community. It was really cute to watch how the kids got excited to see us in Halloween costumes, screaming and holding on to us in the haunted house :)”

- Vicki Bunker, AWA Volunteer

The final AWA-PA collaboration we’ll talk about today is PA’s biggest annual project, the Chingay Parade. At a Networking Session in 2016, PA invited all Immigrant Associations to participate in the 2017 parade. Chingay is the annual national festival of Singapore and is the largest street performance and float parade in Asia. The event is held as part of Chinese New Year celebrations within 15 days of the Lunar New Year, typically on the first weekend. This extravaganza gives a

glimpse of Singapore’s different cultures by featuring performers with diverse backgrounds, age, language and creed.

As part of the PA’s banner contingent in Chingay, AWA prepared two “We Care” banners and collected 150+ signatures from its members on each banner. Along with three other volunteers, I participated in the parade, representing AWA. I felt delighted to be part of the parade and part of this group of 1000+ people from grass roots organizations who are working, together with the People’s Association, to connect the community across sectors and cultures.

“Participating in Chingay was an exhilarating experience. The sights, smells and sounds were like no parade I have seen in the US. Every individual

participating was bursting with cultural pride at the opportunity to showcase their organization or heritage. I highly recommend volunteering for this if you

want to see the diversity of Singapore, all in one place.- Allison Burden, AWA Volunteer

“Participating in Chingay was a wonderful experience. Being among all the amazing performers and celebrating the end of CNY together really made me feel like a part of Singapore.”

- Maria Di Vito, AWA Volunteer

Thank you to all the AWA members who have joined on our PA programs during this first year of cooperation with them. We look forward to a continued relationship with them, and a chance to bring AWA members more great opportunities to get out and support the greater Singapore communities.

If you are keen to join such projects and activities please follow @AWASingaporeCommunityOutreach on Facebook for ongoing updates about volunteer opportunities, or check the AWA website calendar. If you have any questions, feel free to write to [email protected].

The ABCs of clean waterAbout once a week, I do a power walk. I start along the Singapore River, and continue upstream just past the last vestiges of the exposed river. There, the Public Utilities Board (PUB) has created some miniature wetlands, to showcase various systems to purify storm run-off, such as the torrential storms we had during the last northeast monsoon (December to March).

When I mentioned that I walked upstream, you have probably noticed that upstream or downstream have been difficult to differentiate since the river’s mouth was blocked back in 2008 by the Marina Barrage, creating Marina Reservoir.

Roughly ¾ of the land is considered a drainage basin; but much of that land, of course, is paved over. So when rainwater hits the ground, it picks up whatever is on the ground – dust, oil, bird poo, what have you. Since any captured rainwater eventually makes it to a reservoir, ideally it makes it there in as clean a state as possible.

In comes ABC.

The PUB’s Active, Beautiful, Clean Waters (ABC Waters) Programme aims, as they state, “to create beautiful and clean streams, rivers, and lakes with postcard-pretty community spaces for all to enjoy”.

“Active” means providing common spaces for recreation, community-building, and appreciation of our waterways. “Beautiful” means aesthetically improving surface water drainage sites (e.g., vegetated areas instead of concrete drains), roof terraces, and even facades (e.g., green walls). Appropriate plants can also create habitats (for butterflies and birds, say) and increase biodiversity. “Clean” means treating run-off from those frequent storms, since the water will eventually end up in a reservoir.

The “flagship” ABC project was the transformation of the concrete-bound section of Kallang River that flowed through Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park, into a lush, naturalized river full of fish and fishing birds. There are plenty more modest projects that do so much to improve our daily lives. Two of them are: the

Alexandra Canal that I visit showcases various types of wetlands, all of which have plants – such as cattails or umbrella plant - that absorb impurities from the water. The roots of floating plants also help suspended solids to settle out of the water. This cleaner water then flows into the canal, and onward to Marina Reservoir. The wetlands also play their part in beautification of the area, inspire visitors with their benches, and provide a natural habitat for birds, dragonflies, and fish.

Further downstream on the Kallang River, a recent ABC project encourages residents of nearby apartment blocks to come together along a broadened park connector that is bordered by pretty “rain gardens”, where the run-off from the pavement is cleaned up by plants and filtered through soil before running into the river.

We all know how well Singapore does big projects, but Singapore is also very good at making little changes to improve the livability of the entire city. Most of the ABC projects are also little changes, but little changes that can have big local effects. Encouraging neighbors

to meet during an evening stroll by a river, educating folks to take care of the waterways, teaching a bit of environmental science to students, decreasing workday stress with greenery – all those things go a long way to improving the livability of this little urban island.

So can we think of these ABCs as the start of a 5th official language? In addition to English, Mandarin, Malay, and Tamil, we can learn the language of sustainable, environmental stewardship.

THIS TOUR IS ONLY AVAILABLE TO THOSE RESIDING IN SINGAPORE (LOCAL, PR, EP, DP OR SP HOLDERS). OUT-OF-TOWN GUEST ARE NOT PERMITTED.

Have you ever wondered where your garbage goes? Do you also enjoy wildlife and nature? Join us for a tour of the Pulau Semakau, Singapore’s only landfill, and you may be stunned and amazed by the rich biodiversity that surrounds the island!

Semakau Island was reclaimed from two existing islands and joined together with a ‘rock bund’ which encloses 11 cells where incinerated ash is deposited. The Semakau Landfill was the world’s first man-made, offshore landfill, and cost SGD $610 million. Operation began in 1999 and Semakau is currently Singapore’s only available landfill. Our household waste is incinerated and the ash is transported to Pulau Semakau Island

daily. No rubbish is put into the landfill.

In 2005, the National Environment Agency (NEA) opened the landfill for recreational activities. Pulau Semakau is home to more than 700 types of plants, animals, and several endangered species. The island has natural seashores and is surrounded by mangroves and coral reef rings. Nature-related recreational activities held here include bird watching, tidal walks, and star gazing.

On this local tour, we will meet at Marina South Pier to board a comfortable all-weather ferry for a 45-minute ride to the Semakau Landfill. At the landfill, NEA representatives will provide an educational tour. The tour will consist of a briefing on the solid waste management program in Singapore; the design, operation, and monitoring of Semakau Landfill; as well as a bus tour of the landfill.

GUESTS MUST RESIDE IN SINGAPORE. Each visitor must provide their NRIC number which will be submitted to the NEA one week prior to the tour. Refunds will not be issued after April 21st.

Participants are advised to bring their own water bottle and/or drinks, snacks, hat, and umbrella.

Vesak is considered the most holy day observed traditionally by Buddhists in this part of the world. Informally known as “Buddha’s Birthday”, it actually encompasses the birth, enlightenment and death of Buddha. Our guide, Charlotte, will take us to three Buddhist temples as they prepare to celebrate the holiest day in the Buddhist calendar.

The first temple, Kong Meng San Phor Kark See Monastery, popularly known as Bright Hill Temple, is the largest monastery in Singapore and South East Asia. Founded in 1921, this extensive monastery and temple

is comprised of 11 sections, each adorned with intricate architectural designs, elaborate Chinese decorations, breath-taking statues of Buddha and Bodhisattva, turtle pool and gardens and shrines.

Next stop is the Burmese Buddhist Temple, the only one built in traditional Myanmar style; it houses the largest pure white marble statue of the Buddha outside of Myanmar. Hear the story of how one man’s determination to fulfill the mission of introducing the Theravada school of Buddhism in Singapore led to building this temple.

Our final stop is the Tibetan Buddhist Temple, the first Tibetan temple built in 2001 in Singapore. The small but colorful temple is very involved in charity work including providing free traditional Chinese Medicine consulting service, acupuncture and medicine for the needy.

Please dress respectfully, knees and shoulders should be covered.

GOLF SHOTSAWA Golfers Hit the Links in Kuala Lumpur!

In February, the 18 Hole Golfers traveled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to play the countries best courses! We started with the picturesque Templer Park with its gorgeous peaks. The second day we played Kota Permai, a lovely course in a treed neighborhood with lightning fast greens. And then we finished up at the beautifully manicured TPC Kuala Lumpur. During our stay we also fit in some shopping at the famous KL malls, had numerous rooftop cocktails overlooking the city and the Petronas towers, hiked the 270 stairs up to the Batu Caves, and also toured the Petronas towers. We were also delighted that we could meet up with past AWA members who now live in KL, Merle and Ann, for some golf and dinners!

With some 400 species flying, swimming and generally roaming free there was so much to ‘capture’! We started with the African penguins, followed by beautiful pink flamingos, who we found get their color from organisms that they eat- like shrimp. We witnessed highly trained birds of prey, including the American Bald Eagle, displaying their predatory instincts. Who knew the bald eagle’s name actually derives from the old English word piebald, meaning white-headed, not hairless! We ended the tour at the waterfall aviary, nine stories up where we trained our lenses on parrots and delicately woven nests. If you haven’t been, it’s a nice place to photograph nature up close!

Jogging In Singapore (And How Not To Melt Doing So)

When people say it’s hot and humid in Singapore, those two words really don’t do it justice, do they? Because it’s hot in Nevada. And it’s humid in Miami. But there’s something special about Singapore Hot. Singapore Hot feels like someone has draped a moist fleece blanket over your head the moment you step outside. Singapore Hot makes your makeup melt, your hair frizz, and your face break out like you’re 15 all over again. Singapore Hot leaves embarrassing puddles where you were sitting, at any time of day (or night). Singapore Hot is a BEAST.

And if you’re someone who once enjoyed jogging back at home, Singapore Hot can seem like an insurmountable obstacle. The first time I went for a run in Singapore, I think I lasted about 13 minutes. That was how long it took me to get to a stop light which- thank God for small miracles- said “Don’t Walk.” I stood there waiting for the light to change (and hoping it never would), panting and heaving and already dripping with sweat. And before the light could change, I’d decided to give up the whole dumb plan. I managed to gasp/yell, “Forget this!” (although it might have been something slightly more sweary than that), turned around, and dragged myself home. I walked in and my helper visibly cringed when she saw me. “Oh ma’am. You OK? You look not very good.” Fair enough, I thought, because I’m feeling not very good. In fact, I’m feeling very much like dying. Needless to say, the ole’ Runner’s High never really showed up that day. It took a lot of hours and a lot of Motrin for my headache to go away, and it took several showers before my face stopped resembling an heirloom tomato. Of course it was a long, long time before I tried running again.

But! Fast forward a few years: I now run a couple times a week, and I hardly ever yell curse words at stoplights anymore. (My helper continues to be vaguely alarmed by my appearance after my runs, but to be fair, I do get pretty splotchy.) In fact, I actually (Am I really saying this?) kind of like running here now. It’s taken me a while, but here are a few tips I’ve picked up along the way. If you used to be a runner but hate running here, or if you’re not a runner but the price of a Singapore gym membership has you thinking you might unleash your inner Usain Bolt, maybe these tips will help. And, if running is not your thing, but you’re thinking of

jumping in with one of those groups of spandex-clad, super-fit bootcampers (and more power to you because those women are hardcore, as are their glutes and abs), most of these apply to you too…

1. Run when it’s cool(ish). This is an obvious one, but it’s also critical. It’s cooler in the early morning and evening, and trying to run in the midday sun is just asking for trouble (and heatstroke). Lucky for us, we live in the safest place on earth and can run in the middle of the night with no worries at all (except for being chased by lizards, snakes, and bats, which also come out at night).

Expat Adventures

2. Check the humidity, not just the temperature outside. When you open the weather app on your iPhone, for example, it’ll tell you the temperature outside, and you may think, “Well 80 degrees isn’t too bad! I’ll go for a run!” But scroll that screen up, and you’ll see the humidity, as well as my favorite little stat, called “Feels Like.” If your phone is telling you it “Feels Like” 90+ degrees outside, you might seriously rethink that run.

3. Adjust your pace, and expect it to suck. There are lots of cool charts online that show how your pace will be effected depending on the heat and humidity outside. I’m no scientist, so I have no idea how accurate they are. But-- the consensus seems to be that if it’s 80-85 degrees Fahrenheit outside (which it ALWAYS IS), and if it’s over 60% humidity (again- ALWAYS IS), your running pace could be slower by 3 minutes per mile. That is a ton slower than you ran at home. In fact it’s probably the speed at which you walked at home. So just ignore your stopwatch and let your body set a new Singapore pace. It might feel like more of a shuffle… wearing leg weights…through warm molasses. But that’s OK. Embrace your new pace.

4. Gear up. If you’re a Cotton T-Shirt kind of girl, save those tees for sleeping in, and get yourself some DryFit. Find a good running hat that breathes, clothes that are moisture wicking, and sunglasses. Get sports sunblock that is nice and light, otherwise it’ll trap in the heat even more than the humidity already does. And take this lesson from my running buddies, almost all of whom have toenail holes worn through the fronts of their shoes: Get your running shoes a half-size bigger than you usually wear, with a roomy toe box, so there’s lots of room for swelling toesies.

5. Carry water, no matter how far you’re going. If you hate carrying water, it’s time to change your camel-y ways. You will feel a lot better if you’re taking sips of water throughout your run, even if it’s only 20 minutes, and whatever you don’t drink you can dump on your head (I wish I were kidding). Also, I used to scorn sports drinks of all kinds, but here I find that an electrolyte drink at the end of a long run really helps fend off the headaches.

6. Figure out how much water you really need. This is a fun little science experiment (because how many science experiments start out naked?). Strip down and weigh yourself before you run. Then go for a run, strip down, and weigh yourself again. Subtract the two and that’ll tell you how much water you lost during the run. (Alas, it’s not fat loss, amazing as that would be.) Then divide that by the number of miles you ran, and you’ll know generally how much you need to drink in order to replace the fluids you’re sweating out per mile. You’re going to drink more than this, ultimately, but it’s a good figure to keep in mind to make sure you’re adequately hydrating.

7. No hangovers. Let’s be honest—this expat life can be pretty boozey sometimes. But all those Singapore Slings will dehydrate the heck out of you. So if you’re hungover, don’t go exercise outside. Your body is simply not up for it. Gilmore Girls on Netflix is more your speed until you’ve fully recovered from Ladies Night.

8. Pick the right spot. Obviously, you want to run somewhere as shady and breezy as possible. Macritchie, the Botanics, and Labrador Park are nice because there’s a lot of shade, and East Coast Park and the Marina Bay loop often have a nice breeze, especially in the early morning. If you’re running at night, any stretch of the Park Connector Network is a good bet, because it’s all really well lit.

9. Cool down afterwards. The minute I get home from a long run, I pull an icepack from the freezer, wrap it around the back of my neck, and sit under a fan. It’s a shock to the system, but it cools you down fast. The other option is an icy margarita. So I hear.

It’ll take some patience, and a little willpower (luckily we expats have plenty of both), but stick with it, and you’ll be bounding around this island in no time. And remember, if you can run here, you can run ANYWHERE.

1. Do not leave your tennis racquet in the trunk of your car. With the Singapore heat and humidity, this will cause the tension of your string too stretch and loosen.

2. To have consistent feel on your shots, you should restring your racquets regularly. MITS Singapore would advise as a general guideline to restring your racquets to the amount of hours you spend on court per week. For example: if you regularly play 6 hours per week, you should string your racquet 6 times per year.

3. Players must change grips regularly for many reasons. Besides keeping the racquet from slipping in your hand while trying too perfect your game, it also has a health affect. The grip of the racquet is only the part of the racquet which players handle consistently, and it is a breeding ground for bacteria.

Regards, Alan Vuong

Our first mixed doubles event was a resounding success - with a plea from AWA Tennis hubbies for a repeat very soon! Eventual winners Karen & Henrik Christiansen won new tennis bags donated by Savitar. The evening was completed with delicious Prego pizza, Prosecco and beer. Thanks as always to the generosity of Frank Bruinsma at Savitar for hosting the courts and providing the tennis balls.

Flirting with FoodBy Terrie Price

Nameste!Singapore is a diverse playground for foodies and those who relish (pun intended) trying new dishes. Local markets offer a variety of spices and ingredients to create and experiment with dishes at home. For the adventurous, Little India is home to some of the most flavorful food in Singapore.

Some Indian dishes can seem quite daunting to recreate at home. However, traditional Indian home cooking is simple with most dishes created in thirty minutes or less.

Indian food is nutritious and many ingredients contain healing health benefits. For example, cumin aides digestion, cardamom improves blood circulation and cinnamon is high in antioxidants that help the body detoxify. Ingredients such as legume, lentils and seasonal vegetables are part of wholesome diet. And, as an added benefit, lentils are not only nutritious, but very inexpensive.

Every spice used in Indian cooking carries some nutritional or medicinal purpose. Some Indian cooking is based in Ayurveda, a 5,000 year old practice promoting health and wellness. This practice involves mindful eating, combining food and spices to enhance wellness based on individual body types and nourishing the body with nutrient dense food.

A traditional Indian meal will consist of a ‘wet’ dish (for example, dal), a ‘dry’ dish (for example vegetable curry), basmati rice and/or whole wheat bread (for example roti) and yogurt (raita).

As with other cuisines of Asia, an Indian meal tastes of sweet, salty, sour, spicy, and bitter. The deep flavors come from the way it is prepared, and the complex combination of flavors is derived from layering spices during the cooking process. Indian food is always better the second day as flavors will continue to meld overnight.

Indian dishes vary depending on where in India they originate. There is not one main spice that influences Indian food, but a combination of various spices that create the unique tastes.

Northern Indian food tends include more dairy, so dishes are creamier and contain paneer (Indian cheese). Also, food preparation includes the use a clay (Tandoori) oven. Naan, traditionally cooked in a Tandoori oven is also popular in this region.

Southern Indian food is lighter; the weather is hot and therefore people tend to prepare cooling dishes. Dishes contain ingredients such as tamarind (sour in taste) and coconut. Dosas (a lite pancake stuffed with vegetables) and dry curries are more popular in this region.

Flirting With Food

Eastern and Western India also have their own unique fare. Eastern dishes have a heavy Bengali influence and, some of the best desserts rein from this region. Western dishes have a Portugese influence, such as Vindaloo (derived from a Portugese word). Here vegetables are preserved by pickling or making chutneys and dishes are sweeter.

Next time you are in Little India, look for some of these differences on the menu! You will now know what part of India your meal is from. Try to recreate some of your favorite dishes at home. You will find the process is easy and ingredients are readily available at Singapore markets.

Bon appétit!

Bio: Terrie Price is a Certified Vegetarian Chef and fitness instructor. She has worked with more than 27 different chefs in over 20 countries to learn about vegetarian cuisine.

DALThis recipe is an example of how spices are layered during the cooking process to have maximum flavor benefit. Serve with basmati rice or Indian bread. Leftovers will taste even better!

1 ½ cup red lentils5 cups water3 tsp fresh ginger, minced1 tomato, diced½ onion, diced1 fresh chilli, diced (use according to taste)1 tsp salt1 tsp turmeric powder1 tsp whole cumin seeds (or 1 ¼ ground cumin)½ tsp chilli powder1 tsp coriander powder1 tsp garam masala Large handful fresh coriander, rough choppedOlive oil

Wash lentils well and place in pan with water. Add salt, turmeric, ginger and tomato. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, partially cover pan and simmer for 25-30 minutes.

At this point the lentils should be tender and the dal will have a soup consistency.

In a small pan, heat olive oil, add cumin seeds, onion and fresh chilli. When the onion is brown, turn off the heat and add chilli powder, coriander powder and garam masala. Stir and immediately add this mixture to the dal.

Garnish with fresh coriander. This dish can be made ahead of time and rewarmed before serving.

Variations● Add cooked chopped vegetables at the end, or add to leftovers on the second day

for variety● Add 1 whole chili to the lentils in the beginning for more spice● Add 1 diced sweet potato to the lentils in the beginning for a sweet taste● Substitute coconut milk for half of the required water for a creamy taste

Winning ArgumentsWhat works and doesn’t work in politics, the bedroom, the courtroom and the classroom

By Stanley Fish(HarperCollins 2016)

According to Stanley Fish, author of the bestselling How To Write A Sentence, we live in a “world of argument”. Human existence is constantly in a state of conflict, and our understanding of reality is rooted in our own personal experience of it. This means, of course, that because individuals are so diverse, and their experience of the world is likewise, diverse, they are very rarely ever in consistent and mutual agreement. Ultimately, we cannot get away from argument, but in Fish’s book Winning Arguments, he presents more than few ways to go so that readers might understand what it takes to win an argument in given situations.

With the coming presidential elections looking like one of the most contentious ones in recent history, this book might indeed be just the thing to turn to when you might be stuck in the daily drudgery of “who should be president” arguments. Consider first one of Fish’s basic premises, taken from no less than Aristotle himself: that in words lie power, and “if someone skilled in speaking make the worse appear the better all is lost”. This explains why many political arguments stay lodged in rhetoric. Fish a legal scholar also has a very illuminating chapter on how someone like Donald Trump emerged as the Republican forerunner, which in and of itself is compelling reading.

Not especially political? Wives and husbands and any other partners, for that matter, should find something more to mull over in the Domestic Arguments chapter. Given the high rates of divorce globally, Fish does have some strategies for establishing and maintaining compatibility. He recognizes as problematic the relationship in which one party speaks but the other does not. Equally problematic is the relationship in which both parties speak, but never bring up “the issues”. Finally, Fish also sees a relationship as difficult and possibly unlivable if it consists of a daily airing of “resentments, recrimination, accusations and criticisms”. Not to give it all away, but one of the main strategies is to stop seeing a domestic argument as something that one of you has to win. The intensity of the argument in fact means that both have lost. And the way out of it? To find the safe space, the common ground, the other factors where you you do agree and to refocus on the other, not as an adversary but as somebody on your side.

In a way, Winning Arguments, is not so much about the winning and the losing, as much as it is about keeping your sanity and focusing on the fact that arguments are theoretical and are usually based on specific and opposing realities. Knowing what arguments really are is the first step to living in the world of arguments

Noelle de Jesus, author of Blood Collected Stories, finds herself embroiled in way too many arguments for her taste.
