Practicum Experience Overview
This document describes the training requirements for the Master of Arts in Marriage & Family
Therapy (MFT) degree program. It includes a description of required hours, procedures for
enrolling in practicum courses, descriptions of roles and responsibilities of students, supervisors
and faculty, and a description of relevant terms.
The practicum courses and hours are aligned with education requirements for Marriage & Family
Therapist (MFT) licensure in Utah.* Students are cautioned to regularly review all licensure
requirements of the jurisdiction in which they wish to pursue licensure.
*Utah Valley University does not guarantee third-party certification/licensure. Outside agencies control the requirements for
taking and passing certification/licensing exams and are subject to change without notice to Utah Valley University.
The Purpose of Practicum
It involves supervision of live sessions when possible, and discussion of supervised out-of-class field
training experiences. This training is designed to provide students with the opportunity to apply
theoretical knowledge; to implement, develop and assess the efficacy of family counseling techniques
based on this knowledge; and to develop the professional and personal attitudes important to the identity
of a marriage and family therapist.
Students are supervised by experienced clinicians and AAMFT-approved supervisors, who teach
relevant skills, provide supervision of ongoing work, and serve as role models of professional identity
and behavior.
The primary emphasis of training is the acquisition and refinement of core counseling skills, including
initial interviewing, empathic listening, rapport-building, case formulation, treatment planning,
establishing and maintaining appropriate conditions for counseling, evaluation of the counseling process
and progress, and management of transference and counter-transference phenomena.
Practicum Prerequisite:
Before a student may meet with a client and earn any hours toward graduation, students must be enrolled
in Practicum I. To be eligible to begin Practicum I, students must pass the Pre-Practicum course. Based
on faculty recommendation and a final decision by the Program Director, students who do not pass Pre-
Practicum will either be assigned an incomplete grade and complete remedial work while enrolled in
Practicum I, or be asked to retake Pre-Practicum.
At the end of each practicum course, MFT faculty review student skill progress and hour accrual.
Enrollment in every practicum course is contingent upon approval from the faculty, who will either
recommend enrollment or develop a remediation plan.
MFT faculty assign student enrollment to practicum sections.

Therapy Hour Requirements
DOPL requirement (R156-60b-302a. Qualifications for Licensure - Education Requirements)
Supervised Clinical Practicum: (minimum 600 hours, at least 500 direct contact hours of
which 250 hours are with couples or families present and 100 hours of face to face
supervision)
COAMFTE v.12 foundational practice component (KE IV-C)
Includes a minimum of 500 clinical contact hours with individuals, couples, families and other
systems physically present... The 500 hours must occur over a minimum of 12 months of
clinical practice.
UVU MFT Program graduation requirement
Graduation from the UVU MFT program requires 600 total hours, including 500 DIRECT
therapy hours (250 must be relational therapy hours) acquired over at least twelve months (at
approximately 10-15 hours per week) under appropriate program-approved supervision.
• Direct hours include only therapy sessions during which the student is the primary
therapist.
• Relational hours include only therapy sessions during which multiple family members are
physically present.
Direct Therapy Hours in the UVU MFT Program:
• Clinical Hours may be counted when a student is primarily responsible for a therapy
session.
o When a student engages in co-therapy, the student must be fully engaged in the
planning, delivery and debrief of each therapy session. Co-therapy is not
shadowing a primary therapist, nor does it involve two therapists with
uncoordinated approaches to therapy providing therapy in the same session.
o Clinical Hours do not include time when a student is writing case notes, talking
with referral sources, or making reminder calls to clients.
o Clinical Hours are typically counted as a 50-minute hour.
• Clinical Hours may only be completed when the student and client are in the same
physical space. Clinical Hours may not be completed using any form of teletherapy.
o When a student provides therapy at a residential treatment center, a therapy
session provided to multiple co-residing clients at the same time may count as a
relational hour (e.g., group therapy with residents who live together).
o Therapy sessions provided with family members on the phone may not be counted
as a relational hour. Those sessions may count as an individual therapy hour as
long as the resident is in the same physical space as the student therapist.
5
Supervision Hour Requirements
DOPL requirement (see R156-60b-302a. Qualifications for Licensure - Education Requirements)
(G) a clinical practicum of not fewer than 600 hours which includes not fewer than 100 hours
of face to face supervision and not fewer than 500 direct contact hours of face to face
supervised clinical practice of which not less than 250 hours shall be with couples or
families who are physically present in the therapy room.
DOPL requirement (see R156-60b. Marriage and Family Therapist Licensing Act Rule)
(4) "Face to face supervision" as described in Subsection R156-60b-302a(1)(b)(ii)(G) includes
both individual and group supervision.
(5) "Group supervision" means supervision between the supervisor and no more than three
supervisees, unless preapproved by the Board.
(6) "Individual supervision" means supervision between the supervisor and one or two
supervisees.
(7) "Practicum", as used in R156-60b-302a(1)(b)(ii)(G) means a clinical program of training
at an accredited school under general supervision in a setting other than a student's private practice.
COAMFTE v.12 foundational practice component (KE IV-C)
Students must receive at least 100 hours of supervision, and must receive supervision from
an AAMFT Approved Supervisor or Supervisor Candidate for at least one hour each week
in which they are seeing clients. Additional supervision may be provided by AAMFT
Approved Supervisors, Supervisor Equivalents, or State Approved Supervisors. Supervision can
be individual (one supervisor with one or two supervisees) or group (one supervisor and eight or
fewer students) and must include a minimum of 50 hours of supervision utilizing observable
data.
• 100 Supervision hours are earned only during face to face supervision with your
supervisor.
• Students must receive at least 1 hour of supervision from an AAMFT-approved
supervisor during each week that the student meets with clients.
Supervision Hours utilizing observable data:
• Observable data refers to live supervision (behind the mirror, co-therapy, reflecting
team), and video/audio supervision (a recording created, transported, shared and deleted
in HIPAA-compliant ways).

UVU Practicum & Utah MFT Licensure Alignment
Program requirements align with the Department of Professional Licensing (DOPL) requirements for
licensure as an Associate Marriage and Family Therapist. See the Marriage and Family Therapist
Licensing Act Rule, a section of which is copied below. (dopl.utah.gov/laws/R156-60b.pdf)
R156-60b-302a. Qualifications for Licensure - Education Requirements.
(1) Pursuant to Subsection 58-60-305(1)(d), an applicant applying for licensure as
a marriage and family therapist shall:
(a) produce certified transcripts evidencing completion of a master's or
doctorate degree in marriage and family therapy from a program accredited by the
Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy at the time the
applicant obtained the education; or
(b)(i) produce certified transcripts evidencing completion of a master's degree
in marriage and family therapy from a program accredited by a professional
accrediting body approved by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation of
the American Council on Education at the time the applicant obtained the
education.
(ii) A program under Subsection (1)(b)(i) shall include the following:

foundations of marital and family therapy;
(B) nine semester hours/12 quarter hours of course work in assessment and
treatment in marriage and family therapy, including Diagnostic Statistical
Manual (DSM);
(C) six semester hours/nine quarter hours of course work in human development
and family studies which include ethnic minority issues, and gender issues
including sexuality, sexual functioning, and sexual identity;
(D) three semester hours/four and one-half quarter hours in professional ethics;
(E) three semester hours/four and one-half quarter hours in research methodology
and data analysis;
(F) three semester hours/four and one-half quarter hours in electives in
marriage and family therapy; and
(G) a clinical practicum of not fewer than 600 hours which includes not fewer
than 100 hours of face to face supervision and not fewer than 500 direct contact
hours of face to face supervised clinical practice of which not less than 250
hours shall be with couples or families who are physically present in the
therapy room.
LICENSURE NOTE: ABOUT YOUR PAPERWORK AND STATE LICENSURE
Students are responsible for keeping copies of their records (syllabi, hours on site and evaluations).
KEEP EVERYTHING.
Every jurisdiction is different. If you anticipate moving to another state, be sure to check their licensure
requirements well in advance. Take a moment now to download or request the licensure applications
from that jurisdiction. Get your papers in order. Start a portfolio with your training experience, including
your hours, a copy of your training agreement, Clinical Training Site information and contact
information. This can save you hours of hunting and tracking down people in the future.
7
Clinical Training Site & Supervisor Requirements
The UVU MFT Program has relationships with several Clinical Training Sites. New sites may be
approved for students who identify a site that potentially meets the training requirements described
below. In this case, a student must prepare a Petition for New Clinical Training Site, and work with the
site to provide a description of the Clinical Training Site and training experience, preferably supported
by the Clinical Training Site’s own published program literature. Once these materials are provided, the
Director of Clinical Education will explore the possibility of approving the site. It is advised that you
begin the Clinical Training Site approval process as early as possible.
To be approved as a Clinical Site Supervisor:
Clinical Site Supervisors must be mental health professionals who have a minimum two years of
experience as fully licensed professionals in Marriage & Family Therapy, Clinical Social Work,
Professional Counseling or Clinical Psychology. Ideally, Clinical Site Supervisors are either Utah-
Approved Supervisors or AAMFT-Approved Supervisors/Candidates.
To be approved as a Clinical Training Site for UVU MFT students, the site needs to demonstrate:
• The Clinical Training Site is chartered or licensed by the appropriate state authority, if
applicable, and that has been in operation for at least two (2) full years.
• The Clinical Training Site has adequate facilities and equipment for the intern to carry out
designated responsibilities.
• A clearly articulated philosophy of and commitment to training which includes ideas about how
to introduce “novice” clinicians to a new area of skills and attitudes, how to assess students’
progress, and how to address possible training problems.
• The Clinical Training Site and those designated as supervisors comply with professional ethics
standards and practice guidelines published by the American Association for Marriage and
Family Therapy (AAMFT). The Clinical Training Site and the supervisor practice and permit
only those empirically based interventions that follow the current practice guidelines of AAMFT.
• Students will provide regularly scheduled individual and family counseling as a primary activity
at the Clinical Training Site.
o The agency has a sufficient number and variety of clients to assure students will have
some breadth as well as depth of experience in counseling. The nature of clients and
services offered must be appropriate for students whose primary goal is developing
family therapy skills.
▪ The student will not be required to find their own clients
▪ Students may not engage in private practice.
8
o The student will not only shadow a senior therapist
▪ Shadowing and co-therapy with a senior therapist are excellent training tools,
which the program supports. However, students may only count clinical hours
when the student is primarily responsible for the therapy session. Therefore, the
student must be able to be directly involved in providing therapy to clients once
the Clinical Training Site determines the student is ready for that transition.
• The student will be able to provide therapy to clients who are physically present.
o The student will not provide tele-therapy
• A qualified supervisor is available for supervision and training of the student(s).
o Supervisors have previous experience in supervising students providing family
counseling and the agency has some prior experience in training mental health students
o The Clinical Site Supervisor is available to the student for questions and to support the
student in the situation of a client crisis
• The student will receive weekly supervision.
o The Clinical Site Supervisor will regularly review and sign off on treatment plans and
case notes
o The Clinical Site Supervisor will train the student to manage appropriate billing processes
o The Clinical Site Supervisor will verify student hours weekly
• The Clinical Training Site maintains HIPAA compliant standards.
o The site has established policies for maintaining the confidentiality of client PHI
o The site has established policies for case-note completion, management and storage
o The site will provide the student with an appropriately confidential place within which
the student can provide therapy
• The Clinical Training Site will allow the student to record and share client data with the MFT
program faculty.
o The site must permit audio or videotaping of some of the student’s clinical experiences
for the purpose of sharing in the MFT practicum with the client’s informed consent and
confidentiality being strictly maintained.
o The site can work with the program to create a process for HIPAA compliant recording,
transport and deletion of client data.
Nondiscrimination at Clinical Training Sites
The UVU MFT Program has a policy of non-discrimination against students with regard to race, age,
ethnic background, sexual orientation, genetic marker, or any other characteristic protected by state,
local or federal law. The UVU MFT program is committed to fostering the training of members of
groups currently under-represented in the profession of counseling. The UVU MFT program expects
students to provide direct therapy services to diverse, marginalized and under-served communities.
9
Clinical Training sites approved by UVU’s MFT program are expected to conduct their selection and
training of students in a non-discriminatory manner. Clinical Training Sites are expected to select
applicants without regard to race, sex, age, ethnic background, sexual orientation, genetic marker, or any
other characteristic protected by state, local or federal law unless they have compelling legal or
therapeutic reasons for limiting the applicant pool. Clinical Training Sites that have a selection policy
that disallows students based on any of the above criteria must notify the MFT degree program and
clarify the legal (bona fide occupational qualifications) or therapeutic rationale for such policies. The
MFT degree program will approve such Clinical Training Sites only if, after consultation, it is
determined that an adequate legal or therapeutic rationale exists for the selection policies.
Clinical Training Sites must have published policies prohibiting discrimination on the basis of race, age,
ethnicity, socioeconomic status, disability, gender, health status, religion, national origin, sexual
orientation, gender identity or relationship status.
Restrictions on Clinical Training Sites and Agencies
Training may not be done in the student's place of employment, unless the student moves into a therapist
in training role and it is approved by the Director of Clinical Education.
Occasionally, the interpretation of what constitutes "place of employment" is unclear. For example, a
large corporation may own several smaller corporations which operate at different sites, managed by
different supervisors, serving different populations. A student may request the opportunity to train at a
subsidiary of the parent organization in which the student works. Students are required to consult with
the MFT degree program and will be required to submit a formal proposal for review, signed by both the
potential Clinical Site Supervisor and employment supervisor. The rationale for avoiding training at the
student’s place of employment is outlined as follows:
1. Dual Relationships: The Clinical Site Supervisor periodically evaluates the student's
progress in training and submits reports to the MFT degree program. These reports must be
objective, fair, and candid. Therefore, someone who is a co-worker, work supervisor, or
employer should not evaluate the student. The MFT Director of Clinical Education will evaluate
the student's training request to assure that no dual relationship exists. If you have any questions
about a dual relationship, discuss the situation with your practicum advisor immediately.
2. Multiple Identities: A student should enter a Clinical Training Site with a single identity:
a professional-in-training. Students attempting to train in their place of employment continue to
be identified as an employee. This identity can place competing demands on a student and thus
compromise the training that a student receives.
3. Financial Relationships: Students enter a Clinical Training Site placement as a student,
not as an employee, private practitioner, or independent contractor. Ideally, financial matters do
not impinge upon training/education. The educative and training mission should not be
compromised by financial considerations, such as compensation based on "productivity" or
"collections.”
4. Geographical Relationships: Occasionally, health organizations, like other corporations,
merge with or acquire other companies that are at some geographical distance from one another.
In these circumstances, the corporations continue to operate independently of one another and
are united "in name only.” Under these circumstances, a student may train at the separate
corporation, so long as the other criteria regarding separation of training and employment
10
supervision are met.
5. Power in Relationships: Students enter training programs to be the recipients of
educational professional training experiences. This arrangement places the student in a role in
which the student depends upon the supervisor and the agency for a successful training
experience. Students may not hire their supervisors, nor pay the agency for their training
experience. Such arrangements remove the professional-in-training from the student role and
elevate the student to the status of business partner in the training process.
Apply to the Clinical Training Sites Directly
Once approved to begin practicum, you should contact potential Clinical Training Sites directly. You
can mail your application materials directly to prospective sites. You need to prepare a cover letter,
resume, references, and other specific materials requested by some training Clinical Training Sites.
(Individuals providing reference letters should be given several weeks notice.) In most instances,
students should plan on applying to three or more Clinical Training Sites. Be sure to check if the
Clinical Training Site has a particular start date. For example, if you are applying for January placement,
do not apply to sites that do not accept January starts.
Clinical Training Sites notify students who will not receive further consideration within a reasonable
time so students can make other arrangements. Clinical Training Sites vary in how and when applicants
are interviewed. Each Clinical Training Site has its own time schedule regarding the date that offers are
made and in what manner acceptances of offers by applicants are required. For the fall, many Clinical
Training Sites will make their selections in early March or April. For the winter and summer, selection
dates are typically more variable.
Notwithstanding that students are drawn to practice areas that interest them, the MFT degree program
emphasizes that the expectation for this training experience is skill building -- the setting where the
student is invited to train may not be the student’s first choice with respect to their ultimate career goals
– but the learning objectives for the training experiences focus on developing skills in relationship
building and case conceptualization, which will occur in any therapy setting.
Training Agreement Contract
Once the Clinical Training Site is confirmed, the student and supervisor must complete and return a
Memorandum of Understanding form, ALONG WITH YOUR SUPERVISOR’S RESUME, to the
Director of Clinical Education. This is the agreement between the student and supervisor that defines the
expectations in terms of Clinical Training Site work schedule, number of hours, schedule for supervision
and training requirements. This Memorandum of Understanding must be completed by the student with
his or her supervisor no later than two weeks prior to starting the practicum. Utah Valley University
needs the original document. Keep a copy of this form for your files. This is a binding contract. Once
this is signed, you are responsible to complete the agreement.
11
Student Evaluations
Students will be evaluated by their Clinical Site Supervisor each semester during the course of their
training. Students will also evaluate their Clinical Training Site and Clinical Site Supervisor.
The evaluations will be completed online and submitted to the Director of Clinical Education
electronically. It is best if the student and Clinical Site Supervisor have an opportunity to review the
evaluations together prior to submission.
Evaluation of the student’s experience at the Clinical Training Site(s) is completed by the Clinical Site
Supervisor(s); however, the final grade is the responsibility of the University practicum instructor. In the
event the Clinical Site Supervisor submits a negative evaluation, the Director of Clinical Education will
consult with the Clinical Site Supervisor and bring this documentation to the MFT Program Director for
discussion. The student may be contacted to present his/her perspective of their clinical performance. If
the negative evaluation by either a Clinical Site Supervisor or practicum instructor is a serious concern,
the MFT Program Director will consult with the Director of Clinical Education and practicum instructor
to determine whether or not the student will be able to continue the experience, whether or not a failing
grade will be recorded, whether or not additional hours will be required, or whether or not there is
another appropriate course of action.
If unethical or unprofessional behavior is documented, a student’s program of study may be terminated.
Consent/Confidentiality
The program will loan the student a device for recording therapy sessions with clients. Recording should
only occur after written permission by the client is documented in the client’s file.
The program is primarily interested in providing feedback to you as a therapist in the session.
Therefore, it makes sense to ensure that the recording adequately shows you (it may not be necessary to
record client faces).
The recording of the therapy session should be protected by multiple locks, electronic and physical. The
recording device should be kept secure when transported from one location to another and when kept at
home or school. Stolen or lost devices should be reported to the program immediately so that data can
be deleted remotely by the university. Students are expected to replace stolen, broken and lost devices.
Students should never record a therapy session on any device other than the one provided by the
program.
Recordings of therapy sessions should be shared only during supervision with the Clinical Site
Supervisor and during practicum courses. Once a recording has been shared, it should be deleted from
the device.
Students are required to adequately disguise/remove identifying client information when turning in
written reports (case notes, treatment plans, and session transcripts) to practicum instructors or when
discussing cases during practicum group supervision.
At all times, students are expected to maintain data standards of recording, transport and deletion as
outlined by HIPAA, HITECH, and the AAMFT Code of Ethics.

Clinical Training Site: Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
Q: I work full time. How can I complete a practicum that needs 10 - 15 hours a week of my time? I
just cannot give up my employment.
A: Very careful planning - including consideration of financial aid available, adjustments to work
schedules, and the length of time you have allowed to complete the degree program. Many students
are changing careers, and some choose to begin transitioning to human services related jobs or a
combination of part-time or temporary positions in the counseling field while they are in the
master’s program.
Students must understand that the practicum requirement is necessary for graduation. If they cannot
find enough flexibility in employment to earn practicum hours, they may be unable to complete the
program.
Q: Can I do my practicum at my employment location?
A: No, not usually. Otherwise, multiple relationship issues arise. In larger organizations, if you can
show administrative separation between your employment supervisor and your Clinical Site
Supervisor, you may be able to use them as a Clinical Training Site. However, you must show an
organization chart that shows your training and employment supervisors report to different
individuals, and document, via proposal, signed by both supervisors that the experience is in
accordance with the guidelines identified herein. In some locations, you may not perform practicum
duties at your work location due to federal fair-labor laws: they cannot expect you to provide
services for free if you provide those, or very similar services, as an employee.
Q: Do we have any night/weekend training locations?
A: The specific hours you arrange to work at your Clinical Training Site are between you and your
Clinical Site Supervisor. Most Clinical Training Sites require your presence sometime during the day
to attend staff meetings, client staffing meetings, and student trainings. Clinical Training Sites that
offer only night/weekend therapy hours are rare. Most graduate students work a combination of full
or part-time work along with the training experience. It is a good idea when you first start graduate
school to discuss your eventual training requirements with your current employer to allow time to
consider adjustments to your employment schedule.
Q: What are Clinical Training Sites looking for in the students they accept?
A: In general, they are looking for students with an attitude of openness to new experience and
supervision, a curiosity about the field and about people, and a desire to apply and improve
counseling skills. To this end, you may expect interview questions about why you chose the
counseling field, what you personally have to offer to clients, and what your strengths are.
Interviewers may ask what was most important to you in the marriage and family therapy program.
They may ask if you have a particular theory of counseling. Supervisors look for students who show
some evidence of a willingness to explore their own motivation as well as a willingness to work with
13
others. Some placements want their students to have some background experience in human
services delivery. To this end, it is always beneficial for students to obtain some volunteer
experience working with others.
Q: How can I be sure I get a Clinical Training Site?
A: Much in the same way you seek employment. Apply to a variety of Clinical Training Sites – at a
minimum three sites. We do not make placements; you must prepare and present yourself to the
various agencies and organizations. The Clinical Training Sites select students who they feel they
can work with. The key elements include:
• A well-written resume, that clearly articulates your objectives, clearly provides an employment
history, and provides a summary of your skills/qualifications and how they are useful to you in
working with people in mental health settings. Include your coursework to date. Include your
volunteer work and professional or interest organizations to which you belong.
• A well-written cover letter – SPECIFIC to the Clinical Training Site to which you are applying.
Briefly identify yourself, your reasons for wanting to work for them, and what you feel you have to
offer them. (Give them a reason to look at your resume and call you for an interview.)
• Have references available at your interview (names and phone numbers). Some Clinical Training
Sites require you to have written references as part of your application. Plan this in advance, by
getting your references before you apply to Clinical Training Sites.
• Return phone calls. Schedule interviews as soon as possible and honor those appointments.
Follow up after your interviews.
• Be prepared for your interviews. Dress professionally. Ask questions about their expectations
and answer their questions honestly. Be flexible in your expectations about hours and days and show
a willingness to adjust your personal schedule to be able to meet theirs.
Also, remember, this is a training experience. Your responsibility is to learn to apply core therapy
skills. No one expects you to be an expert. You are expected to learn about establishing therapeutic
relationships with people, maintaining empathy, and applying theoretical knowledge while you learn
about your own capabilities and limitations.
At this point, you do not need to be working with a specific population – it is more important to have
the opportunity to practice basic skills, rather than to obtain a training experience that works with
one particular population in which you are interested.
14
Practicum Class Expectations
Each practicum class marks a point of student evaluation. Only students who are recommended by
faculty to continue from one practicum course to the next may continue in the practicum sequence.
Students who are not recommended for Practicum I will meet with the Student Development
Committee to discuss a plan for remediation.
• Students are expected to attend weekly supervision with an approved Clinical Site Supervisor
and to attend all hours of their weekly practicum classes.
• Students are expected to earn a minimum of 125 face-to-face therapy hours, at least 65 of
which must be relational, during each practicum course.
• Students may only accrue hours at Clinical Training Sites approved by the UVU MFT Director
of Clinical Education.
• Students are expected to obtain a signature from their Clinical Site Supervisor for clinical
hours each week. Students are expected to submit hours signed by the approved Clinical Site
Supervisor to the Director of Clinical Education at the end of each month.
• Students are expected to follow all processes for maintaining client confidentiality and for
protecting client health information, including adherence to HIPAA standards and laws.
• Students are expected to follow the standard of care recommended by their Clinical Site
Supervisor when treating clients
• Students are expected to make their Clinical Site Supervisor aware of the full breadth and
depth of all cases, which includes every client the student is treating at a Clinical Training Site.
• Students are expected to follow Clinical Training Site emergency procedures when they have
any reasonable belief that the client is in danger. Any situation where clients or the public are
in danger must be immediately reported to the Clinical Site Supervisor, practicum supervisor,
and/or MFT Administrative team.
• Students are expected to bring any non-emergency ethical issues and questions regarding cases
to the attention of their Clinical Site Supervisor and practicum instructor in the next scheduled
meeting with each.
15
Practicum Outcomes & Evaluation
Any student earning hours toward graduation must be enrolled in a Practicum course. This course meets
on campus with no more than eight other practicum students and a practicum faculty supervisor. Each
UVU practicum faculty supervisor holds either Utah-approved or AAMFT approved supervisor status.
Each Practicum class is a 3-credit class. In addition to staffing cases, these courses are designed to take
material from required textbooks and integrate it into your practice and training. The specific material
and content of seminar meetings will vary depending upon the students’ and practicum supervisor’s
interest areas. All assignments and paperwork should be submitted in a timely manner.
Practicum courses are graded Pass/Fail. Receipt of a B grade or better is required to earn credit in a
practicum class; a B- is a failing grade.
The Program Goal associated with all Practicum courses is:
Clinical Skill
To accomplish this program goal, students must demonstrate competence
in the application MFT skills throughout the accrual of required clinical hours.
Practicum I-IV Course Description
Develops student competence in MFT assessment and intervention. Includes practice with diverse,
international, multicultural, marginalized, and/or underserved communities. Guides competence in
working with sexual and gender minorities and their families as well as anti-racist practices. Guides self-
awareness and self-reflection. Requires completion of case documentation, and effective use of
supervision and feedback.
Course Learning Outcomes
1. Apply effective MFT interventions with sensitivity to client contextual variables
2. Demonstrate timely case documentation
3. Implement supervision and feedback
4. Assess self-awareness and self-reflection
16
To accomplish Course Learning Outcomes, it is expected that Practicum Students will:
1) Develop the self of the therapist through self-reflection and self-awareness
2) Refine a personal theory of change and change processes
3) Improve assessment, diagnosis and case formulation skills
4) Demonstrate respect for the uniqueness and inherent worth of all individuals
5) Formulate an approach to therapy that reflects an understanding of major theoretical models
and the process of change
6) Deliver evidence-based practice in clinical work
7) Increase competence in treating a variety of commonly presenting problems including

Evaluation of Student Learning Outcomes
Practicum faculty and Clinical Site Supervisors are required to use the Marriage and Family Therapy
(MFT) Core Competencies to evaluate student clinical progress each semester.
Practicum courses also prepare students for the AMFTRB licensing exam. AMFTRB exam domains are
also used to evaluate student competence in clinical skill.
See the final section of this handbook for the MFT Practicum Student Core Competency Evaluation
Marriage and Family Therapy Core Competencies© The MFT core competencies (2004) were developed by AAMFT and interested stakeholders.
These competencies were developed for educators, trainers, regulators, researchers,
policymakers, and the public to improve the quality of services delivered by MFTs. The core
competencies represent the minimum expectation of competence demonstrated by an
independently licensed MFT. The UVU MFT program has identified competencies specific to
practicum courses and outcomes:
• 2.3.3 Apply effective and systemic interviewing techniques and strategies.
• 5.3.7 Practice within defined scope of practice and competence.
• 4.3.2 Deliver interventions in a way that is sensitive to special needs of clients (e.g., gender,
age, socioeconomic status, culture/race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, disability, personal
history, larger systems issues of the client).
• 1.5.2 Complete case documentation in a timely manner and in accordance with relevant laws
and policies.
• 2.5.1 Utilize consultation and supervision effectively.
17
AMFTRB Exam Domains
The Association of MFT Regulatory Boards (amftrb.org) is a group of people who represent every
state’s licensing board. They oversee the national MFT licensing exam. The exam has six content
area domains. In Practicum courses, we emphasize and evaluate Domain 3 – Designing and
Conducting Treatment, and Domain 4 – Evaluating Ongoing Process and Terminating Treatment.
• 03.01 Evaluate and maintain quality of continuing therapeutic alliance.
• 03.02 Establish therapeutic contract(s).
• 03.03 Formulate short- and long-term goals by interpreting assessment information, in
collaboration with client as appropriate.
• 03.04 Develop a treatment plan reflecting a contextual understanding of presenting issues
• 03.17 Assist client(s) in developing decision making, coping, and problem-solving skills.
• 03.18 Assist client(s) in developing effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills in their
relational context(s).
• 03.21 Affect client behavior and/or perceptions through techniques (including but not limited to
metaphor, re-framing, rewriting narratives, mindfulness, and paradox).
• 03.22 Facilitate attempts of client(s) to develop new, alternate ways of resolving problems.
• 03.23 Integrate cultural knowledge of client(s) to facilitate effective treatment strategies.
• 04.03 Modify treatment plan in collaboration with client and collateral systems as indicated.
• 04.04 Plan for termination of treatment in collaboration with client and collateral systems.
• 04.05 Develop a plan in collaboration with client to maintain therapeutic gains after treatment
has ended.
** Students will be evaluated by their supervisors and students will evaluate themselves on
these competencies at the end of each practicum class.
Core Competency Evaluation forms should be submitted to the MFT Director of Clinical
Education. These forms will be included in the student’s academic file.
Under Fulfillment of Hours and Practicum Release
Students are expected to complete direct client hours in a way that demonstrates a development of
experience and skills over four semesters. If a student is not gaining experience and direct client
hours in a developmentally appropriate manner to achieve 500 hours by the end of the fourth
semester course, a Student Development Committee* (SDC) meeting will be required before the
student can move to the next practicum.
Additionally, if a student is released from a Clinical Training Site for any reason, an SDC meeting
will be scheduled to create a plan of action for that student.
*For additional information about policies pertaining to the Student Development Committee, please
refer to the MFT Graduate Handbook.
18
Professional Behavior Expectations
Utah Valley University has a commitment to developing practitioners who demonstrate high levels
of professionalism and clinical skill. The MFT program is rigorous and demanding, and we require
that students continually apply themselves to all aspects of their professional preparation over an
extended period of time.
Students are required to complete academic requirements and conduct themselves in an ethical and
appropriate manner at the Clinical Training Site. Students are expected to be familiar with and abide
by the AAMFT Code of Ethics.
Any behavior that violates Professional Behavior Expectations will be reviewed carefully by the
MFT Program Director and Director of Clinical Education and may be referred to the Student
Development Committee.
The following are examples of inappropriate and unethical behaviors:
1. Failure to follow defined training guidelines.
2. Failure to appear for any scheduled event at a Clinical Training Site, such as a therapy session,
supervision, etc., without confirming the absence ahead of time with the Clinical Site Supervisor.
3. Taking vacation time without obtaining approval from the Clinical Site Supervisor.

Site Supervisor and client.

Program and/or the Clinical Training Site.
8. Withdrawing from or leaving the training experience (quitting) without the permission of the
Director of Clinical Education.
9. Accepting one Clinical Training Site, and then turning it down to accept another Clinical
Training Site.
10. Acting in a manner inconsistent with the AAMFT Ethical Code.
11. Demonstration of lewd or immoral conduct by a student in connection with the delivery of
services to clients or interactions with staff, faculty, or other students.
12. Demonstration of rude, demanding, or threatening behavior toward another member of the
training community or Utah Valley University community (student, faculty, staff, or
administration).
19
13. Offering to provide or providing services that are beyond the scope of the student's training
experience or emotional functioning.
14. Conviction of a crime that has a direct bearing on the student’s ability to practice competently.
15. Continued practice by a student who has become unfit to practice under supervision due to:
a) Inappropriate behavior in counseling and academic settings; or
b) Addiction to, abuse of, or dependency on alcohol or other drugs which endanger the public by
impairing the practitioner's ability to practice safely.
Any questions about these training guidelines may be directed to your practicum supervisor and/or
the Director of Clinical Education.

fostering the training of members of groups currently under-represented in the profession of counseling. The UVU MFT program expects
students to provide direct therapy services to diverse, marginalized and under-served communities.
Clinical Training Sites approved by UVU’s MFT program are expected to conduct their selection and training of students in a non-
discriminatory manner. Clinical Training Sites are expected to select applicants without regard to race, sex, age, ethnic background, sexual
orientation, genetic marker, or any other characteristic protected by state, local or federal law unless they have compelling legal or
therapeutic reasons for limiting the applicant pool. Clinical Training Sites that have a selection policy that disallows students based on any
of the above criteria must notify the MFT degree program and clarify the legal (bona fide occupational qualifications) or therapeutic
rationale for such policies. The MFT degree program will approve such Clinical Training Sites only if, after consultation, it is determined
that an adequate legal or therapeutic rationale exists for the selection policies.
