Man o’ WarOriginal Pastel. Signed. 24” T x 28.25” W.

The most widely recognized horse of his time, Man o’ War was a favorite of George Ford Morris. Once the stallion retired, Morris spent days sitting in a chair in the center of his paddock with his camera and sketchpad. The artist perfectly captured the statuesque appeal of Big Red. This pastel may have been created from memory while Morris was in Paris, France.

One of our most unique offerings ever, here is the actual sheet music written for the stallion known as “The King of Kings”. Rex McDonald’s popularity has never been equaled in the show horse world. It has been said that the noteworthy show and breeding stallion made money for everyone that ever owned him. A champion show horse for a decade, the black stallion from Missouri sired many winning offspring. How fitting that St. Louis, Missouri band conductor William Weil wrote the Rex McDonald March in his honor.

59GEORGE FORD MORRIS(American, 1873 -1960)

Battling PegasesOriginal Charcoal on Board. Signed and Dated 1925. 26.5” T x 34.5” W.

One of George Ford Morris’ most recognizable works, Battling Pegases is featured on page 264 of the Portraitures of Horses book. Morris composed this charcoal for a specific reason. Shortly after arriving in Paris in 1924, some of the French artists said that Morris copied his horses from photographs, as no one could draw them as he does from life. To prove his detractors wrong, he created this charcoal from his imagination. He knew it would be impossible for the critics to say this fantasy piece had been done from a photograph. Certainly one of Morris’s most unique and dramatic compositions.
