Smoke pours out from under the wheel arches as police lieutenant Frank Bullitt -- played by Steve McQueen and doubled by veteran stunt driver Loren Janes – wheels his Highland Green 1968 Ford Mustang GT 390 fastback through San Francisco. The driver works through the gears as the car blazes along the highway, slides through dirt and dives over hills and intersections in the notoriously hilly city. T here isn’t an automotive enthusiast who hasn’t seen it: the 10-minute car chase in Bullitt is widely regarded as one of the most iconic in cinema history, and it should come as no surprise that the starring car is fitted with American Racing wheels. “Americans” have defined performance for decades and the popularity of key designs, including the TORQ THRUST ® seen on the Bullitt Mustang, the 200S “Daisy,” and the Ansen Sprint slot mag, are so deeply ingrained in hot rod and muscle car culture that it’s impossible to imagine vehicles of the ‘60s and ‘70s without them. Hot Rod Magazine even named the TORQ THRUST ® wheel one of the “10 most significant speed parts of all time.” The company’s roots stretch back some 60 years to a San Francisco speed shop when racer Romeo Palamides and shop owner J.O. Ellison teamed up to build a winning fuel dragster.
