2017 August Krogh Distinguished LectureshipThe Section’s Distinguished Lectureship for 2017, the August Krogh Award, will

be presented to Dr. Warren W. Burggren, Professor of Biology at the University ofNorth Texas.

Dr. Burggren received his Ph.D. in Cardiovascular and Respiratory Physiology in1976 from the University of East Anglia, UK. He spent his earlier professional career atthe University of Massachusetts and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr.Burggren’s research has been at the forefront of comparative respiratory andcardiovascular physiology of a wide range of species, from fish to reptiles to crabs. Hisresearch has demonstrated the importance of early-life perturbations due to stressorssuch as hypoxia in defining developmental trajectories and future performance and

fitness. One of Dr. Burggren’s most recent advancements is the recognition of the need to incorporateepigenetics in the study of comparative and evolutionary developmental physiology.

Dr. Burggren has disseminated his work and ideas in over 10 authored or co-authored books, 7 edited orco-edited books, 34 book chapters, and 182 peer reviewed publications. He is a co-author of the widely usedcomparative physiology textbook Animal Physiology. Dr. Burggren has trained many high school students andundergraduates in STEM research; he mentored 18 M.S students, 23 PhD students and 15 postdoctoralfellows. He has given 16 plenary lectures and named lectureships.

Dr. Burggren’s accomplishments have been widely recognized (for example, Rector Honoris Causa(Honorary University President), The Autonomous University of the State of Mexico, Toluca, Mexico; Medal ofthe University of Helsinki, Finland; elected Fellow, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science). Many of Dr.Burggren’s research accomplishments took place while he was either serving as Dean of the College of Artsand Sciences (1998-2010) or Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, (2010-2015) at the University ofNorth Texas. He currently serves as the President’s Special Advisor for STEM and International Activities.

KickStartyourfunding:LookingbeyondNIHandNSFSymposium— Wednesday,April26,2017— 10:30AM- 12:30PM— ,RoomW192CTraineeAdvisoryCommittee— Chair:JenniferSteiner— Co-Chair:KristiStreeterFunding for scientific research is becoming progressively harder to obtain and competition continues togrow. Despite the increased challenge to gain federal funding (i.e. NIH), many universities and otherinstitutions require their applicants to have funding when applying for faculty positions, regardless of theircareer stage. As such, an enormous amount of pressure is placed on trainees to obtain funding prior tolooking for a position as an independent scientist. In addition, early career investigators who have alreadytransitioned to independent positions also experience similar pressures and difficulties obtaining funding. Inrecognition of the funding crisis as well as the increasingly competitive job market for trainees and earlycareer investigators, the goal of this symposium is to provide information on funding sources outside of theNIH and NSF. We will have four speakers with each representing less tradition funding mechanisms including1) industry, 2) private foundations, 3) crowd-funding, and 4) military funding. Each speaker will identify howto find funding within their genre, provide information and tips for writing successful grant proposals, andcompare and contrast their organization with how other funding mechanisms (i.e. NIH) work. To providesuch information we have invited speakers who have successfully obtained funding (Dr. Leon, military) aswell as a representatives from companies or private foundations that either have grant programs or regularlyfund product research. We will also have a representative to discuss fund raising opportunities via crowdfunding websites. This symposium will be conducted in the typical format of 25 min presentations followedby 5 minutes of questions with additional interactions to be encouraged following all 4 speakerspresentations.SpeakersSeekingFundingOutsidetheNorm:UniqueOpportunitieswithinMilitaryResearchProgramsLisaLeon— ThermalMountainMedicineDivision,ThermalMountainMedicineDivisionSuccessfullySecuringFundingandCollaboratingwithindustryWai Man(Eugene)Shek — ,LillyChinaResearchandDevelopmentCo.,LtdCancerFundingfromaPrivateFoundationCharlesSaxe— n/a,TheAmericanCancerSocietyCrowdFundingYourScienceMelissaWilsonSayres — AssistantProfessor,ArizonaStateUniv.
