This past year has been an exciting one for APHA. With rising Paint Horse superstars and our growingcommunity service efforts, I am excited to see what 2008 has in store.

The year 2007 began with Got Country Grip, the world’s fastest Paint Horse, holding an undefeatedlifetime record. He ended the year the same and set new benchmarks for the racing industry alongthe way.

But Got Country Grip wasn’t the only Paint Horse that broke records this past year. SM CountrySnowman, who has the same sire as Got Country Grip, became the first 2-year-old racehorse to earn$150,000. Also, top reining stallion Colonels Smokingun became the National Reining HorseAssociation’s first Paint million-dollar sire. And, pleasure horse Zippos Sensation was the firstPaint inducted into the National Snaffle Bit Association’s Hall of Fame. He also was named theAPHA Breeders Trust incentive’s leading sire for an unprecedented seventh consecutive year.

Several APHA programs also expanded their horizons this year, including the BreedersTrust, Gelding Plus and Paint Preferred incentives. Each grew by either offering largercash payouts or encompassing new enthusiasts.

The Breeders Trust incentive paid out a record $1,153,781.71 for 2007, more than$81,600 above last year. It was the fifth consecutive year thatthe program paid more than $1 million dollars.

In addition to competition, our members also focused onseveral humanitarian initiatives last year, including theinaugural Saddle Up! For St. Jude trail ride, two Kids Days andseveral American Paint Horse Foundation projects.

We are proud of the work our membership has put into theseworthwhile programs and their Paint Horses this year. It ispaying off in big ways.

Another fact we are proud to point out is that the AmericanJunior Paint Horse Association is the fastest-growing segmentof our membership. Today, it is celebrating its second year ofsuper growth with more than 7,000 members. Since our youthare the future of the association, we are very excited about thisreport.

Read more about our achievements in this year’s AnnualReport. For more frequent updates on what’s happening in thePaint Horse industry, I encourage you to check out our PaintHorse Journal, APHA Connection magazine, Paint Racingmagazine, Generation j youth magazine, one of our manye-newsletters or APHA’s Web site, apha.com.

With your continued help, I am looking forward to a brightfuture for APHA and our American Paint Horse breed.

Sincerely,

Lex SmurthwaiteAPHA Executive Director

While there has been significant growth throughout various aspects of the American Paint Horse Associationin 2007, one area truly stands out—our international growth.

In November of last year, Executive Director Lex Smurthwaite and I had the pleasure of representingthe association at the Equus Horse Show, hosted by the Mexican Paint Horse Club (MPHC), in thecity of León, located in central Mexico. While there, we were able to visit with our Paint Horseenthusiasts to the south and bring a bit of APHA to them.

It was amazing to me to see the number of people who were so excited to see representativesfrom APHA. We were treated with great respect and conducted a good deal of APHA business. They were very appreciative of having someone from APHA.

APHA’s presence at International Paint Horse events is very beneficial for several reasons. We are able to promote the breed and the association by answering questions from theexhibitors and distributing information. It also creates an opportunity to spread theword about APHA and recruit new members, while reaching out to our current members.

Throughout 2007, we also had representatives at the European Paint HorseChampionship Show in Aachen, Germany; the Danish PaintHorse Championships in Marienheem, The Netherlands; thePinse Show in Vejle, Denmark, and the Haras Nationaux inParis, France, just to name a few.

In addition, APHA and the Brazilian Paint HorseAssociation are working on a racing program to debut this year.

We hope to sustain our presence these countries, as well asreach out to more in 2008. In the meantime, APHA membersin the United States and elsewhere should keep in mind thetremendous market available abroad. It is a great opportunityfor growth.

As Paint Horse enthusiasts and businessmen and –women,we are always looking for ways to market our beautiful breed. And, with our International affiliates hosting more than150 APHA-approved shows in 2007, the market is definitelyavailable. Paint Horse enthusiasm is increasing around theworld—we just need to remember to expand our vision,as well.

Sincerely,

Carl ThurowAPHA President

The American Paint Horse Association(APHA) saw some of its brightest stars shinebrilliantly during 2007, and the past year alsosaw the creation of several exciting new initia-tives for the association.

Two well-known Paint stallions—ColonelsSmokingun and Zippos Sensation—helpedlaunch Paints onto a new level of excellence inopen competition during 2007. ColonelsSmokingun, owned by McQuay Stables ofTioga, Texas, was the first Paint stallion to be-come a National Reining Horse Associationmillion-dollar sire, and Zippos Sensation, owned by Simons Show Horses of Aubrey,Texas, was the first Paint Horse to be inductedinto theNational Snaffle Bit Association’sHallof Fame.

Zippos Sensation was also named leadingBreeders Trust sire of 2007 for an unprece-dented seventh consecutive year. The stallion’s113 enrolled get earned $93,670.61 during theyear to secure the title for him. For the secondtime, Dunthat Benthere, owned by AmandaRinger of Grand Island, Florida, topped theBreedersTrust leadingmoney-earner list.Thesetwo Paints, in addition to the others enrolled inthe program, helped 2007 to be the highest-paying year ever for the program, with morethan $81,600 dollars paid above last year’s pre-vious record payout. Total, the Breeders Trustprogram paid $1,153,781.71—an estimated$14.57 per point earned.

In other competition, Paint racehorse GotCountryGrip also shattered previous standardsof racing excellence. With a perfect trackrecord of 15 wins in 15 lifetime starts, the 4-year-old solid bay gelding not only cementedhis spot as a Paint legend in 2007, but he alsosecured his place in racing history when hetopped the Quarter Horse record for numberof lifetime wins.

“It’s time to go for the big one,” said ownerJimmy Maddux of Weatherford, Texas, afterhis horse’s last race of the year, referring to themodern day Thoroughbred record of 16straight victories held by Citation, Cigar andHallowed Dreams. Maddux plans to pursuethat goal during 2008.

Another up-and-coming racehorse, SMCountry Snowman, a loudly-marked red roanovero who has the same sire as Got CountryGrip, also had a record-breaking year. At theconclusion of his initial racing season, SMCountry Snowman had amassed $159,383,becoming the first Paint racehorse to earn$150,000 during its 2-year-old year.

APHA also supported the sport of kings bystarting a new tradition in 2007—FamilyNight at the Races. The inaugural event, heldat Lonestar Park in Grand Prairie, Texas, of-fered the public a family-friendly, fun way tolearn more about the breed and horse racing.

Pre-existing APHAprograms also expandedtheir horizons this past year. For example, therevampedGelding Plus incentive—which rec-ognizes the efforts of aged Paint geldings inAPHA competition—went “down under,”making Australia the site of the program’s firstinternational cash payouts.

The Paint Preferred program, which nowrecognizes Paints that excel in Open competi-tion, offered larger payouts than ever before. At the National Reining Horse Association’sFuturity, Colonels Smokingun’s son ColonelsNite Special, who is owned by Bob and MaryAnne Van Degna of Bar Double C Ranch inCave Creek, Arizona, actually took home$9,467 in APHA incentive money for his sec-ond-place finish in the show’s Open division.

In addition to competing, Paint Horse en-thusiasts also got the opportunity to ride for acause with the inaugural Saddle Up! for St.Jude Trail Ride in Benbrook, Texas. Ninety-eight riders turned out for the charitable rideand auction and raisedmore than $12,000 forSt. JudeChildrens ResearchHospital inMem-phis, Tennessee. The money will be used tofund children’s cancer research and treatment.

Also benefiting research and other worth-while causes was the American Paint HorseFoundation’s inaugural Donate & Draw pro-gram, where one lucky entrant, Joyce Reim ofCobb, California, won aNewHolland tractor. All money raised through the fund-raiser ben-efited the Foundation, which supports youthscholarships, promotes equine research andpreserves the heritage of the American PaintHorse.

APHA regional clubs joined in performingunique charitable work in 2007 as well. TheOklahoma PaintHorse Club took on the chal-lenge of raising money for two causes in2007—Harvest Farms Therapeutic RidingCenter in Shawnee, Oklahoma, and St. Jude’s.Club members hosted a pilot challenged riderclass at a show that raised more than $7,800.Challenged rider classes provide opportunitiesto those with disabilities to participate in rid-ing programs that display their talents onhorseback.

Additionally, one special American JuniorPaint Horse Association member from West

Jordan, Utah, put together his second benefitteam roping for the Make-A-Wish Founda-tion, which grants wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses. A cancer-survivor andMake-A-Wish recipient himself, 14-year-oldGarrett Stewart made dreams come true forseveral children with the $6,000 he raised.

And, APHA awarded renowned countrymusic entertainer CharlieDaniels with its Leg-endary Achievement Award and a lifetimemembership for his work the past 25 yearswith American Paint Horses. This year,Daniels also donated one of his Paint colts toa charity auction to support a family centerdedicated to preventing child abuse througheducation and support services.

In addition to record-breaking Paint athletesand spreading goodwill in new ways, APHAalso continued the traditions of the past.

The association continued its work to spon-sor the largest Paint Horse show on earth withits annual World Championship Paint HorseShow. This premier APHA event, which spot-lights some of the best horses in the world, in-cluded a total of 1,671 horses. More than4,200 entries were logged for the summershow, which took place for 14 exciting days atthe Will Rogers Memorial Center in FortWorth, Texas.

At the World Show, Floyd and MaryannMoore of 6-J PaintHorses inHuntsville,Texas, generously donated a filly for the fifth consec-utive year to the American Junior Paint HorseAssociation’s (AjPHA) fund-raiser. Ticket

donations raised more than $17,000 to bene-fit Youth scholarships.

APHA also celebrated its third year of KidsDays, at both World Show and headquarters,in Fort Worth, Texas. There, several hundredarea children got the chance to participate infun activities and ride a Paint Horse; many forthe first time.

In all, APHA approved more than 1,200shows around the world in 2007.

APHA also hosted a judging seminar at itsheadquarters in Fort Worth, Texas, as well asan intercollegiate judging contest in 2007.Nineteen new APHA-approved judges joinedAPHA’s roster during the year.

The association experienced success with thecontinued growth of the AjPHA.With mem-bersip totaling 7,200, this was the secondstraight year since its inception in 1974 thatthe Youth program has reported numbershigher than 7,000.

“While we are preserving and building onour traditions, we are definitely excited aboutthe American Paint Horse Association’s fu-ture,” said APHA Executive Director LexSmurthwaite. “With tremendous athletes—

like Got Country Grip and SM CountrySnowman—and outstanding sires—likeColonels Smokingun and Zippos Sensation—breaking records in 2007, we are excited to seewhat next year will hold.

“We’re also eager to continue to grow ournew humanitarian outreach initiatives, whichare leading the way in charitable fund-raisingand educational opportunities,” said Smurth-waite. “It has taken a lot of hard work on thepart of our members and staff to begin themthis past year, but we believe that leaving the

world a better place than you found it is defi-nitely a challenge that is worth the PaintHorsecommunity’s efforts.”

Breeders Trust Annual Payouts

Incentive programs

Breeders Trust has another record-breaking yearFor the fifth consecutive year, APHA’s Breeders Trust

program paid outmore than $1million for PaintHorseswith performance records. With a record-breaking$1,153,781.71, the incentive program for Paint Horseowners, exhibitors, racers and breeders in 2007 boasteda increased payout of more than $81,600 above the fig-ure for 2006.

BreedersTrust funds are based on a point system, witheach point being worth a specific amount ofmoney.The2007 value was $14.57 per point. Yearly dividends arepaid to subscribed stallion owners, foal nominators andrecorded owners of horses enrolled in the program.

In the BreedersTrust program, the stallion subscriberreceives 20 percent of the dividend, the foal nominator10 percent and the foal’s recorded owner on Dec. 31 ofthe showing year receives 70 percent.

The Number One horse by money earned for 2007is Dunthat Benthere, a 1996 red dun overo gelding byTommys Reflection out of Impressive Ash Bar AQHA.Owned by Amanda Ringer of Grand Island, Fla., thisis the second year the gelding has earned the title. Therepeat winner earned the distinction by collecting 1,929 points throughout 2007, andended the year with $28,110.09 in incentive money.

For an unprecedented seventh year, the stallion that sired the most money-earningBreeders Trust foals was Zippos Sensation, a 1993 sorrel overo stallion owned by Si-mons Show Horses, LLC of Aubrey, Texas. One hundred and thirteen of his get earned$93,670.61 in 2007.

The association’s re-tooling of theGeldingPlus and Paint Preferred incentive programspaid some big dividends in 2007. Betweenthe two programs, over $42,000was awardedto talented Paint Horses at affiliate shows.

Gelding Plus promotes aged Paint geld-ings 4 years old and older by paying out a po-tential $42,000 at select APHA-approvedevents.With automatic enrollment for everyAPHA gelding that was officially registeredas a gelding prior to competition, $3,000was

up for grabs at each of the 14 approvedAPHA shows, 11 zone shows and three in-ternational shows. In 2007, 40 Paints re-ceived Gelding Plus payouts.

APHA’s Paint Preferred Program offeredcash incentives to Paint Horses that com-peted in select National competitions. Thisincluded events such as the National SnaffleBit AssociationWorld Championship Showin theOpen 3-year-oldWestern Pleasure andOpen 3-year-old Hunter Under Saddleclasses and the National Reining Horse As-sociation Futurity in the Open division.

Thirty five of the world’s best reiner’s qual-ified for the National Reining Horse Associ-ation (NRHA)Open Futurity Finals, and sixof those were registered Paint Horses, allcompeting for the coveted Open FuturityChampion title on December 1, 2007 inOklahomaCity. APHAput up an additionalincentive for these horses through the PaintPreferred program.

A very special horse and rider combo,Marcy Ver Meer and Colonels Nite Special(APHA)/ Gunners Special Nite (AQHA)scored high enough to win the IntermediateOpen division and lead the Open divisionuntil the very last ride of the night, when shewas edged out by ShawnFlarida by 1.5 points.

Congratulations to riderVerMeer of CaveCreek, Arizona, Colonels Nite Special, owned by BarDouble CRanch, also of CaveCreek, and breeders Kim andDebra Sloan ofNewfoundland, New Jersey. The owners re-ceived a check for $9,465 from APHA.Colonels Nite Special was sired by ColonelsSmokingun, NRHA's newest Million Dol-lar Sire.

Paint racing experienced a year full of shattered records, top per-formers and intensemedia coverage during 2007.The racing programsaw 560 Paint horses start in 761 APHA-recognized races across 18states, competing for $5.5 million dollars over the course of the year.Although racing experienced outstanding participation, names likeGotCountry Grip, SMCountry Snowman andTexas Hero caught the at-tention of Paint racing fans everywhere.

Got CountryGrip—possibly Paint racing’smost famous athlete—had another impressiveyear on the track. The4-year-old Solid Paint-Bred finished the yearundefeated in 15 life-time races, to surpassthe Quarter Horseworld-record of 14 undefeated races. Got Country Grip is only tworaces shy of beating the Thoroughbred record, to become the win-ningiest racehorse. On his way to the top, Got Country Grip becamethe highest-earning Paint racer of all-time with $247,500.

The gelding, owned by JimmyMaddux ofWeatherford,Texas, wasnamed World Champion Solid Paint-Bred for the third consecutiveyear. He also earned the Champion Solid Paint-Bred Aged Horse andChampion Solid Paint-Bred AgedGelding awards, of which he earnedthe equivalents his 2- and 3-year-old years.

Another Paint racing phenomenon, SM Country Snowman wasnamed World Champion Regular Registry, Champion 2-Year-Oldand Champion 2-Year-Old Colt. The red roan overo stallion finishedthe year off as the highest earning 2-year-old Paint racehorse of all-time. SM Country Snowman, owned by Rafter SM Ranch of Wag-oner, Okla., accumulated $159,383 throughout the year. Only fourother Paint racehorses have earned $150,000 throughout their entirecareers.

Also shattering old records was Texas Hero, who became Paint rac-ing’s first $3million sire. Owned by Buddy and AnnAlbin ofDenton,Texas, the 17-year-old bay tobiano has sired 360 foals with 259 starters, earning a total of $3,055,109.

These top Paint racehorses, along with others, helped Paint racinggain worldwide publicity. Paint racing stories were picked up by nu-merous media groups, including National Public Radio (NPR), CBS,the FortWorth Star-Telegram and Texas Horse Talk magazine.

The American Junior PaintHorse Association (AjPHA) continues to grow strong, thanksto the efforts of members who have participated in leadership and community service ini-tiatives throughout 2007.

Throughout Laura Akerlund’s 2006-2007 presidential term, Juniormembers from acrossthe United States participated in several outreach activities, such as the Presidential ServiceProject. These activities clearly demonstrate “j” members’ compassion and caring attitudetoward their community and fellow horse enthusiasts.

Laura’s Presidential Service Project, “One Stride at a Time,” encouraged regional clubs tobecome involved in fundraising for cancer research and cancer patients. AjPHA memberssponsored cancer walks and trail rides, sold uniquemerchandise such as benefit pink ribbontail socks, and organized special fundraising classes at APHA-approved horse shows. Theseefforts allowed the AjPHA to donate more than $10,000 to charitable organizations.

The AjPHA regional club that exhibits the most dedication, effort and caring attitude to-ward the project is awarded the From the Heart Award, a $500 cash award sponsored byMarkel Insurance. In 2007, the award was presented to the Arizona Junior PaintHorse Cluband its members at the 2007 World Championship Paint Horse Show.

Another great learning opportunity for Junior members in 2007 was the annual YouthLeadership Conference, held in Louisville, Kentucky, in conjunction with the APHA Na-tional Convention. AjPHAmembers travel from across the nation to attend this conferenceeach year. Conference facilitator Doug Bratton had “j”members participate in activities thatfocused on leadership, teamwork, sportsmanship and a positive attitude. Conference atten-dees also were able to tour the famous Nashwan Stud Farm, the Kentucky Equine SportsMedicine and Rehabilitation Center, the Kentucky Horse Park, and the Keeneland RaceCourse.

With more than 7,000 members, AjPHA promotes youth involvement with AmericanPaint Horses worldwide. AjPHA is committed to producing America’s finest young eques-trians who are strong in moral character and active in their communities and regional clubs.

AjPHA continues to build tomorrow’s leaders

It was an honor for me to have been chosen recently as the American Paint Horse Foundation’sdirector—a role that carries tremendous responsibility.

I realize that the Foundation is actually the “heart” of the American Paint Horse Association, with strong ties to the caring, compassionate, honest and forthright people who have madeour breed one of the largest and most highly respected in the world today.

I recall my first week on the job at APHA in the summer of the year 2000. My firsttask was to interview our founder, Rebecca Lockhart, and to get atleast two feature stories published about her—one for the PaintHorse Journal and one forWestern Horseman magazine. It was a for-midable challenge, but one that shaped my outlook about PaintHorses and the passionate people involved with them. I forged animmediate friendship with Rebecca, and to this day, she remainsmy mentor.

From our founder and her words to me, I learned:• “When people tell you that something can’t be done, or that it is

impossible, strengthen your resolve and be determined to get itdone. That’s what I did.”

• “I love seeing the pleasure that horses give to children and adults. That’s so important to what we do. Focus on the future, butdon’t forget the past.”

• “We have to keep promoting our Paints so people always knowwhere we came from and how we started.”

• “If you make God a part of your dreams, then you should dream‘big.’ ”In my new role as director of this Foundation, Rebecca’s advice is

central to my way of thinking.I am thankful to Rebecca for her wisdom, to the APH Foundation Board for the chance to work

alongside them and to the APHA Executive Committee for their support of the Foundation. Equally,I am indebted to my colleagues, APHA members, Paint owners and others in our equine communitywho have committed their resources to help us.

If you are someone who knows deep inside that people’s lives are improved when they interact insome way with American Paint Horses, then you are one of us. If you are proud of our Paint Horseheritage, then you are one of us. You are the “Foundation” upon which this breed stands.

Please join us as we ride along with the American Paint Horse to brighten our world.Visit aphfoundation.org for details on how you can help, or call me anytime at (817) 834-2742.

You’ll be hearing more about our ambitious plans for the future as we dream “big.”

Sincerely,

Jerry CircelliAPHF Director

Now in our second official year as the American Paint Horse Foundation, we are proud to be buildingon the past accomplishments of our predecessors—the American Paint Horse Heritage Foundationand the American Paint Horse Youth Development Foundation.

From our experience with the Heritage Foundation, we discovered the importance of preservingthe history of the American Paint Horse breed and honoring the people who helped advance it.There is no better testament to those people and those horses than our larger-than-lifesize“Legacy of Color” bronze sculpture, which adorns the entrance ofAPHA headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas. Our Foundation ishonored to have been a part of the Legacy of Color bronze project.

From our experience with the Youth Development Foundation,we discovered the importance of investing in the future of youthwho have been involved with our association. Our Foundation isproud to have offered nearly $500,000 in scholarships to almost500 youngsters since the program began 28 years ago.

The future is bright for our Foundation, as we look forward to2009 and beyond. We are now engaged in writing a strategicbusiness plan and blazing an exciting trail for our future. Ineverything we do, our aim is to make our world a better placethrough interaction with the American Paint Horse breed and allindividuals associated with our wonderful horses.

On behalf of everyone involved with the American Paint HorseFoundation, I want to thank you for all the support you have givenour organization, not only in 2007 and 2008, but in all past yearsas well. We continue to rely on your help to succeed.

Working together, with the American Paint Horse as ourinspiration, we can continue to improve our world.

Sincerely,
