What is the American Legion?

The American Legion is a patriotic veterans organization devoted to helping veterans, service members and communities. They are the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization. Legionnaires' sense of obligation to community, state and nation drives an honest advocacy for veterans in Washington.

The Legion stands behind the issues most important to the nation's veteran's community, backed by resolutions passed by volunteer leadership.

Mission of the Legion

The American Legion stands for what is important to veterans within their community and relies heavily on the help of volunteers and active members to help keep the

legion have an active voice in government as well as in the community.

Interesting Facts

• In 1920, during The American Legion National Convention in Cleveland, OH,

• the organization went on record urging all American Legion men to become qualified voters.

• Since then, the organization has passed countless similar resolutions advocating Legionnaires to not only exercise their constitutional responsibility to vote, but to also encourage others to do the same.

• Today, membership stands at over 2.4 million members and 14,000 posts worldwide.

• Legions evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential non-profit groups in the United States.

• The American Legion’s success depends entirely on active membership, participation and volunteerism.

Problem

The main problem with the current membership of the American Legion is the decrease of membership throughout

the country. Also, there is a lack of overall knowledge of the American Legion and the purpose it serves to its

community and veterans.

“Youth for the Legion”

“Youth for the Legion” is a statewide campaign created to utilize new membership in the American Legion Auxiliary.

Throughout April 1, 2013 to September 30, 2013 this campaign will be implemented throughout major

universities and colleges in Washington.

Goal

The goal of the “Youth for the Legion” campaign is to create a presence statewide of the younger generation. This campaign was created to raise awareness of the American

Legion, what this organization does for its country, and how other can become involved. Overall this program plans to

increase membership of the younger generation of veterans and families of veterans.
