The Wide World of NursingIt’s been said that nurses are the
heart of health care. In honor ofNational Nurses Week, learn about thevarious nursing levels and the uniqueways they serve others:
CNA. Also known as a nurses’ aideor personal care assistant, a certifiednursing assistant (CNA) plays a vitalrole in the nursing field. CNAs performtasks such as bathing, dressing, feeding, moving and monitoringpatients.
LPN. A licensed practical nurse(LPN) receives more schooling than aCNA and is qualified forresponsibilities such as handling morecomplex medical equipment andadministering certain medications.LPNs are called licensed vocationalnurses (LVNs) in California and Texas.
RN. A registered nurse (RN) hasreceived a two- or four-year degree innursing and works directly withphysicians to carry out patient care.RNs can perform physical exams, administer medicine, and makedecisions about a patient’s care in acritical situation.
APRN. An advanced practiceregistered nurse (APRN)—also calledadvanced practice nurse (APN)—is anumbrella term given to nursingprofessionals with a master’s degreeor higher. The most familiar type ofAPRN is a nurse practitioner (NP), whocan diagnose and treat medicalconditions and write prescriptions.Other common APRN professionsinclude clinical nurse specialist (CNS),certified registered nurse anesthetist(CRNA), and certified nurse-midwife(CNM).

As the school yearcomes to an end, reflect on these wisewords, created bygrade schoolers whoadded their owntwists to somepopular proverbs:
A journey of athousand milesbegins with ... aprivate jet.
Don’t count yourchickens ... it takestoo long.
Two’s company,three’s ... themusketeers.
Better late than ...absent.
Early to bed, earlyto rise ... is first inthe bathroom.
If you can’t standthe heat ... tryAntarctica.
A penny saved ...is not a lot.

If at first you don’tsucceed ... livewith it.
It’s always darkestbefore ... I openmy eyes.

Here’s Rolland! He was born in Foley, Alabama, on his grandfather’s pecanfarm, to parents Henry and Mae Methling.
Growing up on the West side of Chicago near Cicero, he attended FaragettHigh School. Rolland was a baseball all-star and tried out for the Chicago
Cubs at Wrigley Field. He tried out with the St. Louis Browns and was signed!Rolland was then drafted into the Army. He continued to play his favorite game
at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. One tournament here, he was struck out byVinegar Ben Mizel, Hall of Fame Pitcher! Rolland met his wife in high school. They attended shows in Chicago and dances at Sokol Havolchock. To relax,Rolland enjoys reading, his favorite author being John Grisham. Some other“hobbies” of Rolland’s are spending time with his grandchildren. He enjoys
