Chaplain’s CornerAre You Discouraged?
Raise Your Expectations“Whether you think you can or
whether you think you can’t, you’reright.”
Henry FordIn recent memory, one of the
greatest people who exhibited thetrait of high expectations was SteveJobs. Though he was founder ofApple Corporation, he was kickedout and lost his job. He laterreturned to his former company tobecome one of the exceptionalleaders of our time. Herevolutionized how the entire worldexperiences: computers, applications, music, animation, tablet computers, and telephones.
How did all these great productscome to fruition—sky highexpectations. Steve’s HopeQuotient score in the area ofexpectations was simply off thechart. He believed impossiblethings could actually happen. He
believed so strongly that obstaclescould be overcome that the guys atApple invented a term called,“Steve’s reality distortion field.” Thatbeats what most of us have: a“Reality discouragement field.”
It would do us all well to memorizeand internalize the truth that Jesusteaches us in the following verse.
With God all things are possible.Matthew 19:26
No matter how big your obstacle is(health, finances, relationships or allthe above), you aim even higher withyour understanding that, “With Godall things are possible.” Go ahead andrepeat that verse once to yourselfand raise your expectations.
Edited by Steven Faulk and adaptedfrom Ray Johnson, HQ: The HopeQuotient, Measure it. Raise it. You’llNever Be The Same, 2014.

Ash WednesdayIn Christianity, the
first day of Lent—theperiod of fasting andrepentance leadingup to Easter—isknown as AshWednesday. ManyChristians observethis holy day byreceiving a mark ofashes on theirforeheads in theshape of a cross.Traditionally, theashes are made byburning the palmfronds used in theprevious year’s PalmSunday services.Since Biblical times, the sprinkling ofashes over one’sbody has been a signof repentance, andthus Ash Wednesdayreminds Christians oftheir own sin andmortality. Though theholiday seemssomber, it is seen bymany as a way toprepare for thejoyous Easterholiday, when thedeath andresurrection of JesusChrist washes awaythe world’s sins andpromises eternal life.
