1 From Our Dean, Ann Reed Where Are They? I’ve been looking for them for almost two months now. Here. There. Around the corner. Behind me. My success rate is zero. I had no idea they were so hard to find. Where are those lazy days of summer? I just spent a week with a dozen young women (certainly not lazy days) and their talk was all about classes starng in less than three weeks, with sports tryouts and welcome days sooner. Zip—zap—zoop—and summer is officially done. Maybe I should have been looking for lazy hours instead? Not to brush past August, but with September comes cooler quieter days. The sun is heading back south. The air feels different—quieter. The 10 th will be our chapter opening social for the 2016-17 season. We’re going to brunch in our gardens and I hope you’ll mark your calen- dar and come enjoy the changing season, some fine food and great company. I always come away from chapter events rejuvenated and inspired by our member’s organ doings. Mark your calendar for late morning (11:00) and look for more info in the September newsleer. While you’ve got your calendar out I recommend you mark the West Region’s convenon in Salt Lake City, June 11-15, 2017. A mere five hours away—plenty of fine in- struments to hear—family and friends to stay with— we’ve got to go! I’m not always able to untangle myself at the last minute but can usually maneuver when I look ahead. Wouldn’t it be great to make it a chapter field trip? My August challenge for you: play a bit for pleasure. May- be I’m challenging myself on this one. Regardless, be well and happy in all your doings and see you in September. NATIONAL YOUNG ARTISTS COMPETITION IN ORGAN PERFORMANCE

The National Young Artists Competition in Organ Performance promotes the highest level of organ performance. The competition serves as a springboard for emerging young organists, allowing them to contin-ue to develop their performance ability by participating in the various demanding stages of this competition. Established in 1950 and held biennially, the competition is open to organists between the ages of 22 and 32.

The judges for the final round of the 2016 NYACOP in Houston were Edoardo Bellotti, Dean Billmeyer, Susan Ferré, James Kibbie, Ludger Lohmann, John Schwandt, and Carole Terry. Major support for the com-petition was provided by the Jordan Organ Endowment, Karen McFarlane Artists, Kegg Pipe Organ Builders, John-Paul Buzard Pipe Organ Builders, the Martin Ott Pipe Organ Company, the Nita Akin Competition Fund, and the Dallas (Tex.) AGO Chapter, host of the semifinal round.

NATIONAL COMPETITION IN ORGAN IMPROVISATION A flourishing tradition of improvisation has always been fundamental to a truly vital musical culture.

Although musical extemporization has enjoyed a rich heritage in Europe for many centuries, the art form is in perilous risk of extinction in America except among a few organists and jazz musicians. The NCOI con-tinues to set the standard for organists seeking to demonstrate their skill in extemporaneous performance, the highest and most challenging musical art form.

The judges for the final round of the 2016 NCOI in Houston were David Arcus, Marie Rubis Bauer, Pamela Decker, Marie-Bernadette Dufourcet, David Enlow, Tom Trenney, and David Ashley White. Major support was provided by the estate of McNeil Robinson, Dobson Pipe Organ Builders Ltd., Pamela and Ste-ven Ruiter-Feenstra, and David and Robin Arcus.

Biographies of the 2016 competitors can be found in the April 2016 (NYACOP) and May 2015 (NCOI)

issues of THE AMERICAN ORGANIST Magazine.
