Thanks to the Friends of the Library, the Children’s Department was able to purchase five American Girl dolls: Julie, Addy, Rebecca, Luciana, and Logan. Each doll comes in a carrying case and includes a foldable bed, that doll’s story, a journal, and a booklet describing Mineola during that doll’s time period. The dolls are available for checkout at the Children’s Desk to Mineola cardholders only, with children six and up. We are also accepting doll donations in good condition; your donation is tax deductible.

Sign up begins Mon., Aug. 6The “Back to Bach Project” consists of young, outstanding classical musicians who attend prestigious music schools. They volunteer their time visiting schools and libraries to educate and share their love of classical music. Students in the “Back to Bach Project” will perform various musical pieces for children.

MINEOLA MINI CROCHET CIRCLEFirst session scheduled for Thursday, June 14 at 4:00PM; following sessions by appointment with Miss KayeEntering grades 6-12. Sign up begins Thursday, May 31Volunteers will learn how to crochet a small blanket with Miss Kaye at the first session. Each session afterwards will have to be by appointment with Miss Kaye and will count for one (1) hour of community service per session. When the blanket is done, it will be donated to a local animal shelter or other such place in need.

(COOK)BOOK BUDDIES VOLUNTEER PROGRAMTUESDAYS: JULY 10, 17, 24 AT 3:00PM-4:00PMTraining session (for first-time volunteers): Tuesday, June 26 at 4:00PM-5:00PMEntering grades 6-12. Sign up begins Monday, June 11Volunteers read stories to children ages 2 years to entering 2nd grade (Little Chefs) and make an edible food craft with them each week. Volunteers MUST be able to commit to at least 2 SESSIONS to receive community credit. They must be on time at 3:00PM to set up the materials for each craft and stay until 4:00PM to clean up. First-time (Cook)Book Buddies must attend a mandatory training session held on Tuesday, June 26 at 4:00PM-5:00PM. Past participants in the Book Buddies program do not have to attend training, but must sign up and pick up craft directions at the Children’s Desk. *THERE MAY BE FOOD ALLERGENS IN THIS PROGRAM.

Each book is worth one (1) hour of community service (this applies to standard sized graphic novels; graphic novels that are longer than average can be awarded with more than one hour). After a review is complete, an appointment needs to be made with Miss Kaye to record the review for YouTube, which will count for one (1) more hour of community service. Videos will only be uploaded with parent or guardian consent.
