* 1st Performance Acclaimed flutist, Nina Assimakopoulos is flute professor at West Virginia University, USA She has commissioned and performed world premieres for over 84 pieces for flute and has released 5 Compact Discs, the most recent of which, VAYU, was elected into the first round of the Grammy nomination process for Best Classical Instrumental Solo. Nesting Cranes by Wil Offerman, is a piece for solo western flute which utilizes extended playing techniques to mimic the sounds and effects of the Shakuhachi, a Japanese flute used initially by Zen masters for meditation practices. Postgraduate studies in Japanese musical forms have prompted multi-talented and recording saxophonist and composer, Kevin Flanagan to create 'Ich, Ni' , a work premised on structured improvisation based around the tuning series of the Japanese traditional ‘Sho’. Created for two instruments, this work is premiered by two accomplished Cambridge-London based jazz saxophonists and recording / touring artistes, Josh Ison and Alex Merritt, both of whom are also composers. Musicians from the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts (NACTA), China’s premiere institution of higher learning specializing in Chinese musical arts, showcase both traditional and contemporary Chinese music repertoire including the first performance of Shen Pengfei’s piece based on Xu Zhimo’s well-known poem ‘Saying Goodbye to Cambridge’. The NACTA Band comprises some of China’s most illustrious and renowned musicians, playing a delightful array of traditional Chinese instruments and rounding- off their performance with an exciting excerpt of ‘Farewell My Concubine’ in authoritative Beijing operatic style. The world of Beijing Opera knows no boundaries of space or time. Stylized gestures using the sleeves, hands, fingers and body movements portray and symbolize meanings that tell a tale, marking the distinction of greatness for the actor. Walking around the stage once can signify that a long distance has been travelled and every action of a Beijing Opera performer is highly symbolic. Inspired by such philosophical and theatrical abstractions, Valerie Ross creates ‘Symbolic Gestures’, an electroacoustic work juxtaposing Western and Oriental aesthetics of musical expression. Valerie played and recorded the gamelan (‘saron barung’), combining it with layers of sonic landscapes to create the electronic fundamental structure ready for fusion with live instruments and a dancer in a theatrical setting performed by CIMACC Ensemble, comprising Cambridge-based jazz recording artists Roslin Russell
