Who’s Amelia Bloomer?

One of the first women to wear bloomers. Today almost all girls wear slacks or jeans, but back in 1851, Amelia was a radical. Now there is a book award named for her, the Amelia Bloomer Project List. The books on the Amelia Bloomer Project list encourage and inspire girls to be smart, brave, and proud.

• A true story told as a graphic novel about a young girl and her battle with her eating disorder, Ed. She would draw pictures on her napkin to help her keep her food down and the voices out of her head. These drawings and others make up this book.

• A story written in verse about the wars in Cuba from 1868-1898. The main narrator is Rosa, a young girl who uses herbs to help heal those injured by war. She must hide her hospitals in jungles and caves to keep them open.

• In a future society, the U.S. has been destroyed and replaced by 12 districts. Each district must send two young people to take part in the Hunger Games where they must fight to survive. Only one person will live to win. The rest of the country is forced to watch on television.

Set in India, a 14-year-old Pakistani girl, Nazia, discovers how quickly life can change. Nazia is asked to assist her mother in cleaning, and realizes that her dreams of finishing school are becoming faint. When her dowry is stolen, her dreams of marriage are stolen also.

The Wild Girls by Pat Murphy

In 1972, Joan's father gets a new job and they move to California. Joan goes exploring and meets Sarah (Fox). The two immediately become friends. There, Verla's assignments and writing advice help them learn about themselves and deal with their family problems.
