T he headline news in Harley- Davidson's 2016 model year announcement is of updated Sportster 883 'Iron' and XL1200 'FortyEight' designs, two quasi-new limited edition cruiser models with the 'S- series' Softail Slim and FatBoy 110 inchers, the return of a model that should never have been retired in the first place (an updated specification Road Glide Ultra), power hop-ups and new paint jobs - especially black. Custom leadership with motorcycles inspired by the rebellious spirit of the past, updated with modern design and new suspensions that put a little extra smooth in the Harley-Davidson soul." The 'S-series' limited edition cruisers feature "big power and cutting-edge style." The Fat Boy S and Softail Slim S "combine rich finishes with the impressive Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110 engine to deliver head-turning style and performance." All Softail and Dyna models (except Street Bob) are updated with the High Output Twin Cam 103 inch engine that had previously been only available as stock on Harley tourers. The Road Glide Ultra brand, long associated with Harley's highest mileage customers, makes a come- back replete with the Project Rushmore tweaks it missed out on when premature retirement beckoned two years ago. Harley-Davidson Senior Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer Mark- Hans Richer is quoted as saying "This is another historic year for Harley- Davidson. We’re introducing the most powerful collection of cruisers in our history, including the brand-new 'S- series'. We’re raising the bar on Dark Custom motorcycles with the new Iron 883 and Forty-Eight models, the purest expression of the design movement we started in 2008. And we’re extending our lead in touring with the return of the Road Glide Ultra and redesign of the popular Heritage Softail Classic. The updated 'Iron' XL 883 is "intentionally raw and rough around the edges, with a modern design inspired by garage-built bobbers past and present,” according to Harley- Davidson. "Retro styling cues and a perfect ratio of black, color and chrome" are said to give this bike a "bold visual presence," while riders navigating "rough and tumble urban streets" on the "lean and nimble" Harley-Davidson Street 750 and 500 models will appreciate the "improved confidence" from new front and rear braking systems. The limited-edition 'S-series' Softails that will be built with the hitherto CVO-only 110 inch Screamin' Eagle Twin Cam are also said to feature "dark styling for menacing looks that match their muscle." Putting the HO Twin Cam 103 engine into all the other Softails is an obvious move, but one likely to be regarded as overdue and “too little too late” by dealers who have been struggling to shift Softails in the past 12-months. The return of the Road Glide Ultra is being widely appreciated, but of all the tourer models surprise is being voiced that if the Screamin' Eagle 110 inch Twin Cam can be made available on two Softails, why hasn't it also been used to underscore the return of this top-end highest-mileage model? "Black" may be the new "Chrome" but it still don't get you home

Oh dear! Where to begin? If Harley-Davidson seriously thinkthat the continuing direction signalled by their MY2016 offeris going to keep their dealers, employees and investorshappy in the long-term, then they are seriously deluded.

The company is, of course, paying the price now for not ensuring that KeithWandell's "tough love" survival course was undertaken as much in metal as itwas in numbers. They are paying the price for teaching the world that following the decades ofsuperbike revolution "other motorcycle brands and platforms are available".With competitive pressure now closing in on them from every direction, a shareprice that stubbornly won't get over Rushmore any more than dealer showroomtraffic will, and crowd-sourcing having replaced engineering innovation, doesHarley have the talent it needs to get back to designing motorcycles rather thanmarketing strategies before the vultures swoop?Allowing customers to tell you what they want to buy fromyou is a strictly time-limited pathway. It presupposes thatevery consumer has the motorcycle engineeringexperience, skills and vision of a Massimo Tamburini or aMisuyoshi Kohama.Maybe the Motor Company is keeping its next generationErik Buell, Gianandrea Fabbro or Willie G. Davidson hiddenin the wings, and they are just waiting for the right balancesheet or right swing in public taste or demographics beforeunveiling their vision to the world.Hopefully not, because if that is the strategy, thensomeone in the Juneau Avenue boardroom needs a lesson in some businessfundamentals such as the dynamics of R&D investments and atrophy - hopefullythey are not all too busy selling off their shares to be paying attention.Maybe it is a lack of vision, maybe it is a lack of money, maybe it is a lack ofleadership - who knows, but despite the fact that global motorcycle sales are stillonly a fraction of where they peaked in the late seventies and early eighties, andagain in the mid nineties and 'noughties', don't let anyone fool themselves intothinking it is through lack of opportunity.

There are still plenty enough motorcycle sales out there for some factoriesto be able to prosper, and where leadership is concerned, there is everyreason to believe that Matt Levatich can prove to be a good follow-up act

to Wandell's survival strategy. His experience in Europe, where the centre of global motorcycle design andengineering gravity is now to be found, should stand him in good stead wherethe need for vision is concerned. It is ironic that Levatich was the man who headed-up MV Agusta during Harley'sbrief ownership. Ironic because in the time he was there and in the yearsimmediately prior to Harley's ownership (and the time surrounding their still-bornattempt to buy Ducati) the Motor Factory came within inches of being able tobenefit from the genius of both Fabbro and Tamburini, and that of Miguel Angel

Galluzzi, and Adrian Morton, and Pierre Terblanche, to say nothing of allowingErik Buell to slip away – all contemporary and recent motorcycle design andengineering legends. So, here we are, already 15 percent of the way through the 21st century andmaybe, perhaps, possibly just about emerging from what may turn out to be thiscentury's Great Depression (China notwithstanding!), and Harley-Davidson arestill trying to beat their competitors, motivate their dealers and feed dividends totheir investors by selling black paint!Black may well be the new "chrome", but it still don't get ya home! The MY 2016 model year announcement is nothing more than Rushmore trickledown and social media based decision making. Harley need to be leading fromthe front, not being led by the nose. Harley would appear to have a serious designand engineering deficit.

There are plenty of interim steps that Harley could betaking pending a major new platform and technologyinitiative - plenty it could plunder from its heritage

(why oh why won't they bring back something along thelines of the FXR), and plenty it could spin from what it seesgoing on around it ... if the Bar 'n' Shield can sit on anElectric Motorcycle and be found to be able to speak toyoung riders and minorities, then where is the adventuretourer? The Ducati Monster beating muscle bike? Thesport bike? The off-roaders? How tempting that collapsed1998 KTM deal must look to Harley's bean-counters now!The company can buy back as many shares as it can indebt

itself for, but it will never be able to buy back its market share until it realizes thatthe next 85 percent of the 21st century will be territory it has to share - sharewith brands and technology and design that other riders (new and old) are simplyfinding more to their taste.Potentially this is Honda all over again as far as Harley history is concerned, withinvestors who think shares are just for Christmas, holding Harley back instead ofit being AMF and the unions and designers who think retro is a brave new worldof design and engineering innovation because it trends well on Twitter. It isn't.Wake up!

too busyselling offtheir shares

Harley's "blast of cruiser power" for 2016

In what Harley-Davidsondescribes as a "blast of cruiserpower" with a "rush ofacceleration [that] never getsold", the two new (ish) modelsin their model year 2016offering are the new S SeriesFat Boy S and Softail Slim Smodels, both powered by the"fierce" Screamin’ Eagle TwinCam 110 engine.“Our engineers will tell you one of thebest predictors of motorcycleacceleration is the power-to-weightratio,” said Paul James, Harley-Davidson's former Public Relationsguru and current Director ofMotorcycle Product Planning.“It’s something you can’t see on adyno sheet, but you will feel it whenyou twist the throttle. We’ve put morepower in our Big Twin cruisers for2016, without adding weight, in akeep-them-lean and make-them-mean approach to delivering theperformance riders are asking for.”The new 2016 S Series is described byHarley as a "classic hot-rod move –drop in a bigger motor. Make that thebiggest motor." Previously reservedfor their CVO (Custom VehicleOperations) models, making theScreamin’ Eagle 110 incher availabledown-range in regular-productionmotorcycles for the first time is a goodmove, but not one than can be allowedto sit in isolation for years to come, andone that makes no sense at all on alimited edition basis for theincreasingly beleaguered Softail andDyna platforms.Harley's release goes on to say that"With styling inspired by cutting edgetrends in custom motorcycle culture ...rear tires will be begging for mercy.Restyled with minimal bright work, thenew S Series models are built for riderswho want to stand out on the toughestbike in town."Harley cite the tune of the 100 incherbeing installed in this unspecifiednumber of Softails and Dynas asproducing 109 lb.- ft. of torque. Bothelectronic cruise control, ABS, and theH-D Factory Security System asstandard equipment.

Softail Slim S "rugged no-nonsense bobber"

"Classic, lean bobber style, from theclipped rear fender to the Hollywoodhandlebar, is the calling card of theSoftail Slim model. Now the S Seriesversion ups the performance ante witha gloss-black Screamin’ Eagle Twin

Cam 110 powertrain featuring theScreamin’ Eagle Stage 1 high-flowintake and optimized jet-blackover/under dual shotgun mufflers."Every speck of chrome has beenreplaced with gloss black paint. TheSoftail Slim S is offered in Vivid Blackbodywork or the new Olive GoldDenim color with military-inspiredtank graphics.Brad Richards, Harley-DavidsonDirector of Styling, is quoted as sayingthat “While the Olive Gold paint andstar graphic are reminiscent of theWLA military models Harley-Davidson built during World War II,the Softail Slim S pays homage to thepost-war chop-ups made from thosebikes after the war. Those garagecustoms started the bobber era thatcontinues to inspire our styling teamtoday.”Harley go on to describe the SoftailSlim S as a "rugged, no-nonsensebobber" with a Softail chassis that"mimics the clean lines of a vintage

hardtail frame, but utilizes rearsuspension control provided by coil-over shock absorbers mountedhorizontally and out of sight below thetransmiss ion. Combinat ionstop/turn/tail lights and a side-mounted license plate keep theminimal rear fender clean. Periodstyling cues include a gloss black cat’seye tank console with a retrospeedometer face, half-moon riderfootboards, a round air cleaner cover, and laced wheels with gloss black rimsand hubs. The cover of the solo seat isstitched in a tuck-and-roll pattern.

Fat Boy S"a menacing look"

"Harley-Davidson stylists give theiconic Fat Boy motorcycle a darkerattitude in the S Series, designing amenacing look that matches the muscleof its Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110engine, trimmed out for this application

with a Screamin’ Eagle Ventilator intakeand optimized jet-black over/underdual shotgun mufflers.“When we started styling the Fat Boy Swe took it completely black, and thenwe pulled it back a little until our guttold us it was right,” said Richards. “Wekept the highlights on the wheels andthe tank badge, but this is still thedarkest Fat Boy ever.”The Fat Boy S "rolls with fat-customstyle, an attitude that starts with thebullet-hole aluminum disc wheels andis reinforced by the massive headlampand nacelle, half-moon rider footboardsand a classic five-gallon Fat Bob fueltank. The Softail chassis mimics theclean lines of a vintage hardtail framebut utilizes rear suspension controlprovided by coil-over shock absorbersmounted horizontally and out of sightbelow the transmission. Slammedsuspension and a low-slung seat putthe rider just 24.25 inches off thepavement. Color choices are Vivid Blackand Denim Black.

New limited edition Softail Slim S and Fat Boy S debut with Screamin’ Eagle Twin Cam 110 engines

Fat Boy S – bullet hole aluminum disc wheels, five-gallon Fat Bob gas tank, 'slammed' suspension withhidden horizontal mount coil-over shocks for a"faux" hardtail look

Softail Slim S - Screamin' Eagle Twin Cam 110 inch enginewith Stage 1 high-flow intake. At only $3,600 more than thestandard 'Slim', the extra power, stock ABS, security system, cruise control and retro styling make the 'S' look bargainous. There doesn't appear to be any public indication yet of justhow limited the edition will be - dealers should be able toadd considerable value to standard 'Slim' inventory with an'S-series' upgrade package

In what is, in effect, a trickle-down effect from the FLplatform upgrades of two yearsago, and another step towardsrecognition of some of thehorsepower offerings they arenow competing against, Harley-Davidson "gives cruiser riders adose of Project Rushmoreperformance by making theHigh Output Twin Cam 103engine standard in every 2016Softail model (except the SoftailSlim S and Fat Boy S)."Tuned to deliver strong accelerationand passing power, the HO 103 engineis equipped with a high-flow airboxand camshaft that optimizes bottom-end torque. The result is animprovement in performance a riderwill feel every day.In 2016 the High Output Twin Cam103 engine is also standardequipment in all Dyna modelmotorcycles except the Street Bobmodel.

Softail Cruise Controlelectronic throttle control

"For the first time ever, theconvenience of Harley-Davidsonelectronic cruise control is standardequipment for select 2016 Softailmodels and available as a dealer-installed accessory for all other 2016Softail models. To accommodate the cruise controlsystem, all Softail models are equippedwith electronic throttle control. Cruisecontrol will be factory-installed on theHeritage Softail Classic, Softail Deluxe,Fat Boy S and Softail Slim S models, and offered through Harley-DavidsonGenuine Motor Parts & Accessories forthe Breakout, Fat Boy, Fat Boy Lo, andSoftail Slim models.

Heritage Softail Classic "from Hydra Glide to Heritage Softail"

"Combining the look of a vintagedresser with smooth, modern Softailperformance, the Heritage SoftailClassic model combines classic cruiserattitude with modern touring comfortand amenities. In addition to its new High Output TwinCam 103 powertrain and newelectronic cruise control, the HeritageSoftail receives refreshed styling for2016.Rebecca Krueger, Harley-DavidsonMotorcycle Product PlanningManager, is quoted as saying that

“You can draw a straight styling linefrom the Hydra Glide models of the1950s to the new Heritage Softail. Thenew bike looks more like the original, still nostalgic, but with fewer studs onthe saddlebags, seat and backrest, anda new tank badge.”The leather saddlebags are said tofeature "new conchos with redstarburst inserts that match highlightsin the seat skirt and tank badge. Thesaddlebags also have a new andimproved internal support structure tomaintain their shape. A new leatherfuel tank panel matches the pattern ofthe backrest. The Heritage Softail Classic isdescribed as "retaining its otherpopular features", such as a"passenger backrest, a full-coverageremovable windshield with quick-release mounts, a deep FL-style frontfender and chrome laced wheels withcovered hubs. ABS is standardequipment."

Heritage Softail Classic - "blazing from thepast with original dresser spirit and moderntouring capabilities", and likened by Harleyto the design values of the old Hydra Glide;but would 103 inches really pass muster foranybody looking for "modern touringcapabilities"? At least Harley have made thecruise control (and ABS) standard

High Output Twin Cam 103 Power for Softail and Dyna

Softail Slim - will the upgrade to the HO 103 inch engine be enough toprotect this entry level Softail from the "Power and Paint Envy" that thelimited edition 'S-series' 110 incher is bound to create? ABS is standard, security system optional

Softail Breakout - is the "custom styling in a long, low silhouette" enough tomake many want to break-in to the Breakout this year? ABS is standard;security system an optional extra

Softail Deluxe - "accessible andpowerful, wrapped in pure nostalgicbeauty", and $1,200 more at listthan the theoretically "refreshed"FLSTC; ABS as stock

Softail Fat Boy - bound to be affected by the same issues and opportunitiesas the 'Slim'; $3,000 less at MSRP than the 'S-series' for the "original fatcustom icon", with ABS as stock, security system optional

Softail Fat Boy Lo - "a darker, lower, meaner iconic boulevard cruiser", but atonly $2,200 less at list than the new 'S-series' there may be showroom issuesahead; at least it does have the bullet hole disc wheels seen on the 'S', ifthat's a "thing"…

How much longer for the Dyna?Harley's entry level Big Twin is apopular custom platform, butrarely one that attracts bigScreamin' Eagle optionupgrades, despite it beingplumbed-in to Harley's H-D1Factory Customization programoptions.Used examples are proving to be ofmore interest to aftermarketcustomizers than "Bar 'n' Shielders",but with virtually no changes for 2016,except for upgrades to the HighOutput 103 inch Twin Cam from thestandard spec version for four out ofthe five Dynas and some fresh licks ofpaint available, the yawning chasm ofa range-gap where the FXR could haveled them, or where a genuinestreetfighter styled muscle bike couldtake them, there has to be an everincreasingly large question mark

hanging over the viability of thecurrent Dyna line. With the ABS-less Street Bob listed at$13,699 ($700 more for the Dyna LowRider), and now the only one of the fivenot to have the High Output engine, dealer reports of slow inventory turnon the Dynas aren't likely to go awayany time soon. Many view the Dyna as representingpoor showroom floor-space ROI and, demographically, a model that sells toriders who are less inclined to live upto their perceived civic duty ofdoubling the value of the list price inthe first three years of ownership withservice, upgrade, accessory gear andapparel spending.

The top of the range Dyna, the FLD Switchback, is listed at $17,199 in "VividBlack" with ABS as standard. This year customers can spend extra for colorpaint options, but along with buyers of the FXDL Low Rider, FXDF Fat Boband FXDWG Wide Glide do now get the more capable High Output 103 inchTwin Cam as standard - leaving the FXDB Street Bob as the perpetual entrylevel Cinderella Big Twin in the Harley range

Three CVOs offer "Power and Prestige"

Trumpeting their top of therange offer, Harley describe their2016 CVO line-up as offering"Bold paint, potent power andexclusive prestige" that soars to"even higher levels in 2016 asHarley-Davidson Custom VehicleOperations presents its latestcollection of three limited-production factory-custommotorcycles, each a hand-craftedmasterpiece intended to pushthe boundaries of motorcycleluxury, performance andtechnology.Described as being "Loaded for thelong-haul aficionado" the 2016 CVOLimited model features "an all-newpaint scheme and new tank badges.Offering outstanding aerodynamics forrider and passenger, the 2016 CVORoad Glide Ultra motorcycle is availablein three new paint color combinationswith revised comfort and technicalfeatures."The sonic capability of the 2016 CVOStreet Glide model is matched only byits mind-blowing performance on thestreet, and the ultimate hot-rod baggeris back with four outrageous new coloroptions.Brian Nelson, Harley-DavidsonPrincipal Stylist, is quoted as saying that“Each year we work to make the newCVO motorcycles even more exclusivewith content not available on a regular-production Harley-Davidson, alongwith an extreme level of attention todetail in design and finish. The goal isto create motorcycles that are visuallyexciting and thrilling to ride. Some CVObikes make a wild statement, othersexpress premium exclusivity, but theyare all special motorcycles.”Harley-Davidson go on to say that theirCVO motorcycles are "engineered andcustomized using exclusivecomponents and paint treatmentscombined with numerous items fromHarley-Davidson® Genuine MotorAccessories. The CVO program is oftenused to introduce new technologies, custom components and paint andgraphic techniques before they areoffered as original equipment oraccessories.

"Technical features"

In addition to the paint, graphics andstyling the 2016 CVOs do in fact havesome new "technical features" making

their debut, three of them in fact.A Tire Pressure Monitoring System isintegrated into the valve stem on eachwheel to monitor front and rear tirepressures and provide a warning of"lower-than-optimal" pressure. "Tirepressure can be viewed anytimethrough the odometer or on the infoscreen of the BOOM! Box infotainmentsystem" with pop-up warning alertscreen.Secondly, a new integrated key fobcombines the functions of the electricluggage locking system and theproximity-activated security system, conveniently replacing two previousfobs with a single device. Finally new LED front turn signalscombine modern style and long bulb lifewith increased light intensity forenhanced "conspicuity" - which inEnglish means they are brighter!

Drivetrain

Those are the "new technical features"- apparently the dr ivetraincharacteristics are either not technical,or not new. "The 2016 CVO Limited,CVO Street Glide and CVO Road GlideUltra are exclusively powered by theScreamin’ Eagle Twin-Cooled Twin Cam110 engine with a combination of air-cooled and precision liquid-coolingstrategies to maintain peakperformance under the mostdemanding loads and riding conditions." So there is something other thanpaint, decals and styling that makesthem "loaded for the long-haul

aficionado after all!"All models are equipped with theAssist & Slip Clutch Pack that providesa slip feature on downshifts to reduceloading of the driveline, and hydraulicclutch actuation to reduce lever effortand maintenance. All Harley-DavidsonCVO models are factory-equipped withelectronic cruise control, Reflex LinkedBrakes with ABS, keyless ignition andthe H-D Factory Security System, and anindoor/outdoor storage cover with theCVO logo. New for 2016, a narrow-profile primary cover and derby cover onall three models improves rider legclearance, allowing many riders a morefirm-footed stance on the ground.

CVO Limited

The 2016 CVO Limited is said to offer"the ultimate in refined touring luxury... in a new paint scheme that flowsfrom front to rear and incorporates newtank badges. New styling detailsinclude a color-matched splitstreamvent in the batwing fairing, replacingthe previous black vent. Premiumremovable luggage liners, back-lit handcontrol and dash switches and a high-output charging system are alsostandard equipment. The CVO Limitedrolls on polished-chrome Slicer customwheels."

CVO Road Glide

The 2016 CVO Road Glide Ultra is saidto have been "Wind-tunnel tested todeliver outstanding aerodynamicperformance for rider and passenger. The distinctive frame-mounted, shark-nose fairing of the CVO Road GlideUltra motorcycle features triplesplitstream vents and a 13.5-inchtouring windshield to virtuallyeliminate head buffeting. An exclusive1.25-inch diameter chrome handlebaroffers more pullback and height toposition the rider for optimal controland long-haul comfort."Touring comfort is further enhancedby improved seat and backrest shapesand foam density for rider andpassenger. FLHXSE CVO Street Glide - if a $36,799 motorcycle can ever be described as"entry level", then this is it where the three-model top-of-the-line Harley CVOsare concerned. Described by Harley as a "hot rod bagger decked out fender tofender with Premium Boom! Audio sound, infotainment, custom details andmind-blowing paint. Three-way speakers (front and rear), a pair of 300-watt amplifiers, and a custom-tuned equalizer pump out big sound with less distortion."

Dark customs “stir the rebel soul" - really?

"Start with a dark canvas. Addhorsepower and soul. Thenmake it your own." Thus sayethHarley-Davidson's latest crop ofPR graduates about a "Harley-Davidson Dark Custommovement" that "strips amotorcycle to its mechanicalessence and the motorcyclingexperience to its rebellious core– the quest for freedom andself-expression."So, in these ueber-competitive times, the Motor Factory doesn't want to"meet the nicest people" on itsproducts then!Harley says that it is asserting "its DarkCustom leadership" with "new, hard-nosed machines that offer anauthentic, affordable experience to anew generation of riders. Forged, pressed and machined to minimalistperfection, the Iron 883 and Forty-Eight models balance function withstyle that can stand on its own or sparka fire of custom inspiration."It gets worse… "Dark Custom with anurban gene, the nimble Street 500 andStreet 750 models roll into a secondseason with customer-led updates, ready to master the global cityscape.“With Dark Custom, we embrace thebeauty of the basic motorcyclestructure,” said Harley-DavidsonStyling Director Brad Richards. “It’sabout the beauty of the nuts and bolts, the steel and rubber and the heart ofthe machine, which is a Harley-Davidson V-Twin engine. Dark Customreaches back to our styling roots, butalso invites the rider to move forward,to make the Dark Custom motorcyclehis or her own with accessories, ingenuity or riding experiences.”

Iron 883"the grit and grime of riding andliving in the urban environment"

Said to be "drawing inspiration fromgarage-built bobbers past andpresent" the new Iron 883 model is"chopped and drilled, intentionally alittle raw and rough around the edges.Clipped fenders, blacked-outpowertrain and exhaust, drag-stylehandlebars and a solo tuck-and-rollseat cover evoke bare-knuckle streetperformance. A ribbed air cleanercover speaks to the stamped-from-steel authenticity of this motorcycle.Bullet-hole details on the belt guard, exhaust shields and front fender bracerecall a racer’s effort to lighten thebike.Harley say that the "colors and finishes

for the Iron 883 were selected to helphide the grit and grime of riding andliving in the urban environment, forriders who don’t own – or care to own– a garden hose and a driveway.“It’s always been my vision that thisbike will look better with some dirt orpatina,” said Harley-Davidson SeniorStylist Dais Nagao, who led the Iron883 design project. “It’s quick andnimble and encourages the rider to beaggressive. As it’s ridden it may getsome scuffs, scratches or othercharacter marks. We can’t do that atthe factory. That’s the privilege of theowner, and becomes part of the storyof the bike.”The Iron 883 is powered by an 883cc

Evolution V-Twin engine tuned to"power away from stop lights anddeliver satisfying performance." Ablacked-out floating front brake rotorcomplements nine-spoke castaluminum wheels finished in blackwith machined highlights that reduceunsprung weight by a combined eightpounds to improve ride comfort andhandling.Ride and handling are said to befurther enhanced by new cartridge-style forks and new emulsion rearshock absorbers with progressive-ratesprings and a threaded pre-loadadjustment collar that is said to makeit easy for the rider to dial in shockperformance to match road conditions

or passenger weight. A special shockadjustment spanner stows under theseat.

Forty-Eight"functional muscle"

The new Forty-Eight motorcycle "waitsat the curb like a broad-chestedbulldog guarding its turf" (!). A"burly" 130mm front tire is"suspended" by 49mm forks securedin massive forged aluminum tripleclamps and an aluminum fork brace."The classic 2.1-gallon peanut fueltank creates a narrow, athletic waist.Chopped fenders expose the tire

New 2016 Iron 883, Forty-Eight and Street Models "lead the Dark Custom Movement"

XL 883N 'Iron 883' - as with the other modelsbeing billed as "new", this "upgrade" is all partof Milwaukee's attempt to drive the brand andbalance sheet ever deeper intominority and youth riderterritory. Nothing wrong withthat as part of a balancedapproach to market chasing, butthere will come a point at whichsavvy social-media generationconsumers (especially) seethrough brands that appear to betrying just that bit too hard to beconvincing. Harley aren't thereyet (hopefully), but they arecourting danger with ademographic whose reaction toimproved ride comfort is morelikely to be "how come it wasn'talways thus" than "oh goody-good, now I'll buy"! Bydefinition, younger riders andnew entrant demographic groupsdon't have the hard-miles experience to be ableto make valid and comparative technicaljudgements; instead they come from a place thatexpects their consumer products to not need

improving every year, a place where brand trust iseverything. Betray that trust by saying that, well, actually, what we were selling last year really

wasn't very good, is aslippery slope to lostconsumer trust. Replacementis the more common responseto any perceived flaws orchanges in the wind of 'cool'and that can just as oftenmean replacement of lifestyleor brand choice as it canmean simply trading up andstaying within the meaningand embrace of a brand.Harley-Davidson's use ofsocial media and "brandambassadors" may havegiven them feedback on thecolors that sell now, buttrying to factory-programfreedom of choice and short-lived styling fashion by

tuning so-called "Dark Custom" into a "thing"could smack too much of "the man" for thetastes and attitudes of these very fickle targetconsumer groups.

rubber. A perfect balance of black, color and chrome gives this bike a boldvisual presence.“The low handlebar and forward footcontrols put the Forty-Eight rider in anaggressive posture, so we picked up onthat with the styling,” said Harley-Davidson Industrial Designer/StylistBen McGinley, the lead stylist on theproject. “The big front wheel is like asteamroller coming down the street, and we went with the smaller roundsteel air cleaner and some chrome onthe exhaust to draw your eyes to theengine, which looks larger under thepeanut tank. I’d describe the theme ofthis bike as functional muscle.”The fuel tank styling featureshorizontal stripes, a throw-back to1970s style that’s reappearing today

on custom bikes. Those lines arerepeated throughout the motorcycle, including in the seat stitching, slottedexhaust shields, rear sprocket and beltguard. New lightweight cast-aluminum wheels feature nine splitspokes and a solid black finish withmachined highlights. A side-mountlicense plate and combinationstop/tail/turn signals keep the rearfender uncluttered. The new 49mm forks feature acartridge design tuned to complementnew emulsion rear shock absorberswith progressive-rate springs and athreaded pre-load adjustment collar, acombination that delivers a premium, controlled ride over the roughesturban pavement. A shock adjustmentspanner is stashed under the solo seat,

which has been formed to support therider with all-day comfort.

VRSCDX Night Rod Special - described by Harley as "asinister-looking machine" with the 60 degree liquid-cooled76"/1250cc Revolution engine delivering a "v-twin growland massive power." Styled for performance-mindedenthusiasts who like a "blacked-out, no-hassle ride, and anaggressive, drag-inspired riding position." FLHTCUTG Tri Glide Ultra Classic - featuring the Twin Cooled version ofthe High Output 103 inch Twin Cam engine (air-cooled with integratedoil cooler) features include 6-speed Cruise Drive with electric reverseand new reduced-width primary housing/derby cover. Costing some$8,000 less the second of Harley's Trike offers, the FLRT Freewheeler ismarginally the smaller and and has the older air-cooled version of the High Output 103 incher.

They say that with the Revolution Xengine it "invites young riders everywhere to rideinto personal freedom. It’s built for maximummanoeuvrability, complemented by a minimalist,blacked-out design." Road Glide Ultra "defines touring excellence"

Apparently "they cross twostate lines before breakfast."That's what Harley are sayingabout their "bagger"customers, so if that's not you,the answer would be to buy aBMW instead presumably"!"For riders with a serious devotion tothe road, Harley-Davidson announcesthe return of its long-mileagespecialist, the 2016 Road Glide Ultramotorcycle. A two-year absence fromthe Harley-Davidson Touring line wastime well spent infusing the Road GlideUltra with enhanced style, comfort andperformance – the full influence of thecustomer-led Project Rushmoreproduct development effort."Rider and passenger will enjoyoutstanding aerodynamics andoptimized touring ergonomicspropelled by the unrelentingperformance of the Twin-Cooled HighOutput Twin Cam 103 powertrain. Thenew Road Glide Ultra shatters theexpectations of the most demandingtouring motorcyclist." Memo towhichever PR trainee wrote that lastsentence - shattering customerexpectations is not necessarily a "goodthing"!“Since its introduction in 2011, theRoad Glide Ultra has been the bike ofchoice for Harley-Davidson ownerswho ride the hardest and longest,” saidHarley-Davidson Motorcycle ProductPlanning Director, racer and noted"real deal" Paul James. “In fact, ourresearch shows Road Glide Ultra ridersrack up more miles per season thanowners of any other Harley-Davidsonmodel. We’ve designed the new RoadGlide Ultra for that hard-core touringrider and passenger, with a specialfocus on aerodynamic performanceand by creating a riding position that’sa comfortable place for a long day inthe saddle.”

Creature comforts"CFD designed frame mounted fairing"

The company goes on to say that "thedistinctive design of the frame-mounted Road Glide fairing wascreated by Harley-Davidson stylistsand engineers using computationalfluid dynamics [CFD], hundreds ofhours of development in a wind tunneland thousands of miles of road testing.Integrated triple splitstream ventopenings in the fairing work in concertwith the 13.5-inch tall touringwindscreen to manage air pressurebetween the fairing and the rider tovirtually eliminate head buffeting.

Mid-frame air deflectors mountedbelow the fairing help to maintaincomfortable airflow around the riderand direct cooling air to powertraincomponents."Because the fairing is mounted to theframe, the effect of its weight andimpact from the wind are reducedthrough the handlebars, resulting inlight, precise steering control. Thefairing also holds Dual ReflectorDaymaker LED headlamps, adistinctive and conspicuous stylingelement that punches farther throughdarkness with brilliant white high- andlow-beam illumination."The rider triangle is unique to theRoad Glide Ultra model and designedto put a wide range of riders in aposition that’s ideal for long-haultouring comfort. The 1.25-inchdiameter handlebar is positioned 1.9inches higher than Road Glide andRoad Glide Special models to optimizelong-range touring comfort, and theseat shape is revised and slightlylower."

"Outstanding aerodynamics and project Rushmore influences benefit demanding touring riders"

FLTRU Road Glide Ultra - at $25,699 MSRP the returning hero of the (now) 10model tourer line-up isn't quite the most expensive of the tourers - theFLHTK and TKL are a tad more - but along with them it has ABS, the factorysecurity system, cruise control and the premium radio option as standard

16 AMERICAN MOTORCYCLE DEALER - SEPTEMBER 2015 www.AMDchampionship.com

Ready for a hard day at the office - the Road Glide Ultra's instrumentationand gizmo specification is aimed squarely at the longest of long-distancemileage riders. Harley-Davidson do a good job with such specifications, butalso do a good job of opening up aftermarket opportunity for audio, communications and accessory vendors who can take the "creaturecomfort" riding values of the 21st century even further

Page 19: AMD 194 September 2015

Drivetrain"Project Rushmore innovations"

The 2016 Road Glide Ultra is said tofeature "all of the Project Rushmoreinnovat ions and technologyenhancements that have collectivelytransformed the Harley-DavidsonTouring platform, including stout49mm forks, Reflex Linked Brakes withABS, sleeker fenders, lighter Enforcercast aluminum wheels and improvedinstrument graphics and handcontrols. Cruise control is alsostandard on the Road Glide Ultra."The robust touring performancedemanded by Road Glide Ultra ridersis provided by the Twin-Cooled HighOutput Twin Cam 103 powertrain. Acombination of air-cooled andprecision liquid cooling strategiesallows the engine to maintain peakperformance under the mostdemanding loads and ridingconditions, and enables a higher10.1:1 compression ratio for increasedpower and efficiency, including 10.7percent more peak torque than thestandard Twin Cam 103 engine.Coolant circulates through the cylinderheads in the area around the exhaustvalves and through heat exchangerslocated in the left and right fairinglowers. The precision cooling system isthermostatically controlled and usesan electric pump to circulate coolant.

Creature comfortsergonomic infotainment

The Road Glide Ultra is equipped"with the BOOM! Box 6.5GTinfotainment system with color touchscreen, GPS and Bluetooth capability.Mounted in a reshaped inner fairing, the 100-watt BOOM! Box 6.5GT isnow located two inches closer to therider compared to previous models forenhanced visibility of the high-resolution screen and an easier reachto the faceplate buttons. Allinfotainment functions are controlled

through thumb-operated five-wayjoysticks located on the left and righthand controls or the touchscreen. Four5.25-inch speakers are optimized tothe system and mounted in sealed-and-tuned enclosures."Equalization is optimized for themotorcycle environment andautomatically adjusts the bass andtreble levels to the selected volume foroptimal sound quality at all ridingspeeds. Fairing storage space includesa rubber-lined Jukebox mediacompartment with USB connection inthe right side of the inner fairing."The new Road Glide Ultra "addressespassenger comfort with a seat that’sone inch wider and one inch longerthan the previous model, and a revisedbackrest shape provides more lumbarsupport. The shape and angle of thearmrests are adjusted to keeppassenger arms from slippingforward."Restyled luggage with one-touchlatches includes "sleeker hardsaddlebags and a new Tour-Pak

luggage shape that offers 4 percentmore capacity than the previousdesign. The Tour-Pak is topped with achrome tubular luggage rack."

Sooner or later Harley are going to have to surrender to the inevitable andmake the 110 incher the stock engine in their tourers, but for now the 103prevails. As with the Road Glides, you "pays yer money and makes yer choice"with the standard FLHX Street Glide coming in at $2,300 less than the 'Special'but sans the stock ABS (on a 775 lb dry weight tourer?), factory security systemand premium radio set-up. It has to be said that with very little specificationand price difference the distinction between the Street and Road Glides - fivemodels between them now - aren't great and you have to wonder if dealersreally need the tourer variants? Surely consumers don't, do they?

FLHR Road King - at $18,749 the Road King is Harley's entry level tourer for2016. Harley bill it as "Custom Touring at its finest and most affordable -while it may look like a boulevard cruiser, themodel is fully equipped for long-distancetouring with all the essentials required for across-country adventure." This year sees areduced width primary housing andderby cover installed

Harley's most expensive tourer at $27,299 MSRP, theFLHTKL Ultra Limited Low "offers top-of-the-line touringcomfort that’s tailored to fit."

Indian launches 2016 motorcycle range

Although a six model line-up is nodoubt a lot less than where Polarisenvisage seeing the Indian range settleout at, while the company waits to buildits dealer network, the steady evolutionof what we are seeing under Polaris'brand management has got everyone'sattention - not least Harley-Davidson's. In fact, the progress Indian is making inbuilding its dealer network isimpressive, and with the 2016 modelrange showing a sureness of touchunderpinned by the considerablecorporate resources and PowerSportsindustry experience that Polaris bring tothe brand's table, there is every reasonto expect to see wait lists develop - andnot just because of the widely reportedpaint facility bottleneck.Compared to Harley's 8 family, 38variant line-up, Indian's single 'entry-level' Scout, three mid-range Chiefbranded cruisers, a Chieftain as its top-end cruiser and a single Roadmastertop-end tourer may appear torepresent a modest start, but don't befooled, this is a case of appearancesdefinitely being deceptive. This is amodel range that is strategicallygreater than the sum of its parts.Polaris earned much kudos for thecareful, steady way in which it went

about introducing and evolving itsVictory brand. That calm assurance hasnow come back to benefit them inspades as they seek to give Victory newmeaning and recreate it as offeringnew, additional business opportunitiesfor their motorcycle dealers in thelong-term.In the short-term this theoreticallymodest start is exactly what isrequired, and by building slowly,

Indian are building well. Their 2016 offer clearly demonstratesa business plan that fits a rational andrealistic approach to productionisationplan, a manageable approach torequired dealer investment andflooring overhead and, above all, acareful nurturing of consumerexpectation. The three-way dynamic of tensionsthat could arise between the

Roadmaster - described by Indian as offering "Pure American Luxury - the dramatic design complemented with theergonomic luxury and innovation for both rider and passenger makes for an unmatched ride". Interestingly, thoughpriced a tad more expensively than Harley's tourers, its 111 cubic inch Thunder Stroke power plant and host of ride-friendly included features and creature comforts (power-adjustable windscreen, heated grips, dual heated seats, ABS,tire pressure monitoring, keyless ignition with remote locking storage, electronic cruise control, advancedinfotainment system and Bluetooth capability) make the Roadmaster competitive with Harley CVOs that start atsome $10k more at MRSP

Chieftain - also described by Indian as a "bagger" and starting at $22,999 MSRP, standard features include ABS; castaluminum frame with integrated air-box; cruise control; driving lights; highway bar; keyless start; power windshield;Desert Tan genuine leather seats; remote locking hard saddle bags; tire pressure monitoring; 100 Watt stereo withAM/FM Bluetooth and Smartphone compatible input

Chief Classic - starting at $17,999 MSRP, "classic style meets modernperformance and technology". Fuel injected 111"/1800cc Thunder Stroke air-cooled 49 degree v-twin in cast aluminum/integrated air box frame. Featuresinclude ABS, remote key fob/keyless start and gauges galore

Scout - available with or without ABS (and in Black, btw!) - Indian continueto describe the acclaimed Scout as a middleweight cruiser. Well, yes it isreally, but either way this is Indian's popular entry level offer (25.3" seatheight) and 'Iron' or no 'Iron', this "nimble, sporty platform with modernperformance technology" (i.e. liquid-cooled and fuel injected) is massivelycompetitive with Harley's Sportsters, both in terms of power(69"/1130cc/100hp/72 ft.lbs peak torque at 5,200 rpm), bang-for-the-buck(MSRP starts at $10,999) and handling thanks to suspension that remains farsuperior to the upgraded Sportster set-up (dual shocks with 3" travel andtelescopic front forks with 4.7" of travel), a cast aluminum frame (andwheels) and smooth gear drive wet clutch

Chief Dark Horse - launched mid-way through the traditional model yearcycle (to much admiration) this "Darker. Bolder." (sounds familiar ?) entrylevel Chief Cruiser (MSRP starts at $16,999) is based on the torquey (119ft/lbs) air-cooled fuel injected Thunder Stroke 111"/1800cc 49 degree v-twinengine in a cast aluminum frame with integrated air box and has ABS,remote key fob/keyless start and electronic cruise control as standard

Chief Vintage - described by Indian as a "bagger" and starting at $20,999 MSRP, there's nothing "vintage" about thestandard ABS and keyless start technology on this soft-bag tourer, with tank-mounted electronicspeedometer/odometer; dual trip meters; digital tachometer; ambient air temperature; fuel range; average fueleconomy; battery voltage; gear position display; real-time clock; vehicle trouble code readout; heated grip level (ifheated grips installed); low engine oil pressure; and 9 LED telltale indicators: cruise control enabled, cruise controlset, neutral, high beam, turn signal, ABS, check engine, and MPH or km/h unit designation; tank-mounted electronicfuel gauge with low fuel LED indicator

expectations that Indian's brandheritage inevitably generates, theinevitable comparisons with Harley-Davidson, and the position that Indianneeds to earn in a crowdedcontemporary market that is spoilt forquality riding choices, makes this anambitious project.Indian's 2016 offer appears to confirmwhat everyone who has been payingattention has come to believe - thatPolaris has the smarts to control itsambitions and deliver on expectations. Have you been keeping an eye on whattheir shares have been doing in thepast 36 months? Comparing andcontrasting Polaris' share priceperformance with Harley's is just asinteresting as comparing andcontrasting their motorcycle productranges.By refusing to allow itself to be suckedinto offering too much too soon,Polaris is giving the Indian brandheadroom rather than headwind.

New battery preparation made easy!

Correctly preparing and activating a new battery isessential - it guarantees that the battery will performat full power from the get go and have the bestchance of delivering the long service life themanufacturer says it should give.

However, due to time pressure and other issues itis a process that's often overlooked; simply put, acustomer buying a new battery at the parts counteris usually anxious to get his vehicle going, or the

happy rider about to pull away on the bike he's justcollected wants to get going the moment the sale isthrough. For those customers "come back tomorrowwhile I finish preparing the battery" just does notwork.

Martin Human, the brains behind the OptiMatebattery maintenance and diagnostics programme, told AMD...

"The problem with badly prepared batteries isthat they will work to begin with, because problemsdon't emerge until months or even a year later. Fordealers poor battery preparation is a potentiallyexpensive gamble - in financial and reputationalterms - if it has to be replaced within the warrantyperiod.

"Even with battery acid at full strength whenfresh, poor preparation brings the new battery onlyto 70-80% of deliverable power. Some cells may beat a lower voltage than others, due to some plateswithin those cells not yet fully interacting with the

just-received acid", Martin continued. He explained that the final 20-30% of power is

achieved with controlled charging that gentlyactivates the full surface of each lead plate and thusbrings each of the 6 cells to equal voltage. This is theproblem that the specifications of his TecMateOptiMate PRO-S (single bank) and OptiMate PRO-4(4 bank) are designed to deal with - to do thisautomatically, and quickly with only one hour ofcharging.

"It’s easy and does not take a lot of time. All thedealer or battery buyer has to do is fill the batterywith acid as normal per manufacturer’srecommendations, wait 30-45 minutes for the acidto settle, then select 'NEW' on the OptiMate PRO,hook up the battery and walk away.

"One hour later that new battery is good to go,ready to deliver full power and well prepared to lastwell past its warranty period - that can be 100%guaranteed if maintained by an OptiMate consumercharger".

OptiMate PRO also revives new batteries thathave lost their charge due to being in storage for 3months or longer, and can also automatically save asulphated battery that has been discharged down toas little as 1 Volt.

"Once again it is a simple procedure", saysMartin. "Simply select 2A or 4A for batteries largerthan 10 Amp-hours, hook the battery up and let theOptiMate PRO do the rest.

Slingshot heat control kitWITH the growing popularity of Polaris Industries' wellreceived Slingshot reverse three-wheeler comesdemand and opportunity for aftermarket parts vendorsto offer owners retro-fit upgrades tuned to the specificdesign idiosyncrasies of the stock vehicle.

We have already seen examples of exhausts andsets, and now, from Avon Lake, Ohio basedperformance heat and sound control product specialistDesign Engineering Inc (DEI) comes something that has"logical" stamped all over it where the design of theSlingshot is concerned.

Noted for their motorcycle exhaust wraps, DEI isnow offering a custom-cut 11-piece thermal barrier kitthat includes a double-walled main heat shield, asingle-walled floor and heat shield and additional 9-

pieces covering the transmission tunnel, rocker panelsand center console.

The Slingshot's compact design and 4-cylinderengine mean the muffler, catalytic converter andexhaust manifold all reside in close proximity to oneanother on the right side of the vehicle. Thisconcentration of heat transfers into the passenger area, cooking the floor and cockpit area.

The end result of using the DEI kit is a cooler andquieter Slingshot, allowing for longer rides and greaterrider comfort. DEI Powersports Brand Manager BrianVan Koevering said: “This is the first summer seasonfor this vehicle, so when the mercury rose our phonestarted to ring off the hook with exasperated Slingshotowners looking for relief.

Climax branded clean-lookcontrol kitsONE of the pioneers of the clean handlebar look,Henderson, Nevada based Custom Cycle ControlSystems has launched what it is describing as "newlyengineered" Climax branded, concealed hand controlspackages.

Described as entirely self-contained, all the lines, wires and cables run through the handlebars and exitbelow the top tree. CCCS say they also have five customhandlebar styles to choose from, from Old School styledrag bars to apes.

The wires, cables and hoses ship "extra long" so theycan be cut-to-length; the hidden brake and clutch fluidreservoirs are quickly and easily filled, according to CCS,thanks to a syringe action fill and bleed onboard funnelhidden inside the grip.

The convenient push-pin accessibility to the internalthrottle and reservoirs mean no tools are needed; sevenmicro switches maintain all stock control functions andallow custom use.

Austrian exhaust manufacturer Remus' newestelectronic sound control system, the SC15, is a CANbus controlled valve system that is compatible withSportster, Dyna, Softail and Harley Touringapplications.Featuring a muffler integrated flap, the control unitexploits the message based protocol processing of theCAN bus standard to control the valves that actuatethe muffler flap. Within the tolerances of applicablelegal restrictions (European homologation forexample) engine parameters and driving conditionslead to an accurate triggering of the flap to optimize

the sound.A handlebar-mounted push button switch makessimple work of the complex matrix of rpm, speed andgearing information processing that determines thelevel and nature of the sound that muffler flap

actuation delivers.Installed on an XL1200 Sportster, Remus are showinga dyno chart that suggests that even when the valveis closed, peak power is boosted by 1.6 hp and thatwide open power peaks at 70.1 hp compared to theirstock measure of 61.1 for the set-up tested. In torque terms the impact is even more interestingthough, because as well as boosting peak torquewhen closed and when wide open, the system appearsto be doing so earlier in the all important mid-rangeand sustaining the advantage well into peak revs.

Blueprinted matched-set fuel injectorsDaytona Twin Tec has three high-performancereplacement fuel injector designs available - for 2001to 2005 models; 2006 and later throttle cablemodels, V-Rod models, and 2008 and later electronicthrottle control models.

Made in the USA using "the latest injectortechnology", there are 10 different standard flowrates to accommodate most engine configurations. For non-Ethanol and common Ethanol fuel (E10)Daytona Twin Tec say they calibrate their injectors at60 percent duty cycle for 95 to 225 maximum hp in2001 - 2005 applications; 85 to 225 maximum hpin 2006 and later throttle cable models and 115 to225 maximum hp for 2008 and later electronicthrottle control models. They flow between 4.5 and10.6 gm/sec in 2001 - 2005 models and 3.9 gm/sec'06 and up throttle cable models (at 58 psi and 25/18degree spray angles, and 5.4 to 10.6 gm/sec at 58psi with 18 degree spray angle) in 2008 and upelectronic throttle control models. For E-85 applications, from 95 to 165 hp in the caseof 2001 - 2005 applications; 95 to 165 hp for the2006 and later throttle cable models and 95 to 165hp for the 2008 and later electronic throttle controlmodels, at 80 percent duty cycle using regular E85

pump gas, flowing between 6.2 and 10.6 gm/sec at58 psi with 25 or 18 degree spray angles asappropriate.Custom sizes up to 15 gm/sec are availablefor all applications.Kevin Baxter, Tech SupportManager at Daytona Twin Tec,told AMD Magazine that "Wetest these injectors from 6 to 18volts and from 40 to 100 psi. Eachset of injectors comes with theresults from that test. When installinga supercharger or turbo, one typicallyuses a variable pressure fuel pump to

ensure proper delivery of fuel across the entireoperating range. This means they can adjust voltageto the pump or the pressure of the pump."Having the actual injector flow rates for thoseranges tells the installer exactly how much fuel theywill deliver based on their settings and how theychange them across the operating range."This is very valuable. ABS bearingThe advent of larger diameter front wheels has raisedsome interesting questions about ABS and brakingdistances. Basically, the larger the diameter of thewheel, the longer the braking distance.Unless using a programmable electronic ABS unit, linkedto sensors on the front wheel, the ABS won't receive thesignals it needs to calibrate itself effectively - simply putit won't know that a bigger wheel has been installed.Because a bigger front wheel revolves more slowly thana stock dimension wheel, the wheel the rotationdistance is longer, and the ABS will not understand andapply adequate front braking pressure and frequencywhen stopping.MC Baggers say they have solved that problem with anewly-designed ABS bearing for 2013 and earlierHarley-Davidson touring models that will maintain fullfunction of the braking system. Indeed the companysays that for 2014 and later Harley-Davidson touringmodels "the use of our bearing is absolutely essential"according to Hyun Lee Director of the South Koreanheadquartered manufacturer which has a US facility atRancho Dominguez, California."This is because 2014 and-up models are equippedwith a new design of ABS, one that has a unique

combined front/rear tandem braking system whosesuccessful function depends upon the correctcalibration of both the front wheel and rear wheel ABScomponents that were calibrated at the factory with astock front wheel in mind."We built our ABS bearing from a replacement bearingthat is precision manufactured to our own specification, with the completed product going through a rigorousseries of tests over several months. The results wereconfirmed by a professional racer, who tested andconfirmed the functionality of our worldwide patent-pending design.Hyun is also the inventor of the acclaimed EZ-ON RakeKit, which allows for correct trail setting withoutwarranty compromising frame modifications. The latestnews is that the EZ-ON kit has now passed the rigorousTUV approval testing and certification process inEurope.

Technology (E.S.T.), air insidethe Bike ShowCase isexchanged with filteredoutside air 3-5 times everyhour, keeping the temperatureinside consistent with thetemperature outside andeliminating moisture that couldcondense on the motorcycle. Itfeatures clear, durable 0.30gauge PVC panels and an 0.60gauge reinforced PVC base matthat is mildew, abrasion andflame resistant, as well asbeing impervious to oil andgas."Best of all," says Phil, "notools are needed for this easyone-step set-up; simply attachthe included air pump and theBike ShowCase inflates in lessthan 90 seconds. Check out thedemonstration on ourwebsite."Ideal for custom bike buildersand for protecting customerbikes while on dealershippremises, the company saysthat it will be able to startmaking custom configurations, made to customerspecifications, soon. Anyoneneed one for their long-forkchopper?

At the AMD WorldChampionship ofCustom Bike Buildingone of the hardestclasses to competein is Modified Harley.Restrictions in thisclass include the useof Evo-period or later

frame and engine withthe bike’s original framegeometry unchanged. However, workinginside such tightguidelines didn’t

prove to be a problemfor Ferry Clot, who builtRocket at his shop HotDreams Barcelona

AT the AMD WorldChampionship of CustomBike Building many peopleconsider the Freestyle classto offer the optimum of

creativity in custom bike building withits “anything goes” ethos. However, inthe supporting classes, where the rulesare very tightly defined, the entrantsmust work a lot harder to createmotorcycles that stand apart from thecompetition. One example is the

Modified Harley class, where buildersare restricted to Evo or later frame andengine combinations and framegeometry that must be kept original. Tostay within these confines and yet stillcreate a radical looking motorcycle is areal challenge, and one that was takenup in 2014 by Ferry Clot of HotDreams Barcelona. Ferry, who is the

man behind Hot Dreams Barcelona, builtRocket alongside Lucas Mulle, and the twomen began by sourcing a ’94 Softail with an80ci Evo motor. The bike was pulled completely apart, andwork then began on the frame. At the rear, the stock swingarm was removed, and in its

place a one-off, custom unit wasfabricated and welded in place,

the stock rear section of theframe being retained.Moving upwards, the

custom rear fender was molded into theframe and provides the seat base too.Moving forward there is a one-off gas tankthat sits low over the frame’s backbone.Despite the headstock having to remain inthe stock location, Hot Dreams has stillmanaged to modify it by removing as muchexcess metal from the area as possible. Thechanges to the frame are then finished atthe base of the engine rails where a custom

belly pan was fabricated and molded in. Due to having to retain the stock geometry, the Denver’s Choppers front end that isused on Rocket had to be shortened beforeit could be fitted. Once installed it was thenfinished off with a 21 x 2.25in wheel, with asecond one of the same size used at therear. While there is no brake at the front, therear wheel uses a Kustom Tech Sprocketbrake. With the reworked frame now a roller, theengine and transmission were both rebuilt.Although internally standard, the motornow wears one-off exhausts and a customintake manifold with dual air filters.Similarly, the transmission remains basicallystock. The only changes are the addition ofa 3in wide open belt drive from Barnett anda Scorpion clutch. Shifts are handled by a

jockey shift that also carries the clutchlever, leaving the handlebars clear of thelever. The only controls on the handlebarsare the built-in buttons and an internalthrottle under custom engraved billetaluminum grips. The same custom gripdesign is used not only on the jockey shift, but also on the bike’s footpegs. One of the aspects of the build not done byeither Ferry or Lucas was the paintwork onRocket, as this was taken care of by Ito’sDreams. The simple paintwork applied toRocket allows the craftsmanship in the restof the build to show through, and this nodoubt helped the bike to place 2nd in theModified Harley class at the 2014 AMDWorld Championship of Custom BikeBuilding.
