The Measurement Challenges
Kumaran Krishnasamy, AMCC staff engineer for theS19211 10G CMOS Transceiver, wanted to respond tocustomer requests for higher performance and be ableto prove the device’s capabilities.
When considering jitter generation, the first and mainchallenge was to find a measurement system withvery low intrinsic jitter. By doing so, Kumaran couldsee the true jitter of the design contributing to thetotal jitter for the device.
Second, he needed a system that integrated jitter generation, tolerance, and transfer measurements.
Third, he required enough diagnostic informationfrom the system in order to identify and prioritizeareas of the design and focus his efforts.
Fourth, Kumaran needed a system with a simple userinterface and testing methodology that enabled quickresults without changing product or frequency config-urations. AMCC aims to be first to market with themost robust solutions.
Industry-Leading Solution
AMCC sought recommendations from Agilent forways to overcome these measurement challenges. With inputs from customers like AMCC, the innova-tive JS-1000 Performance Jitter Solution (E5510B)was developed. This system is based on Agilent'sindustry-leading E5500 SeriesPhase Noise MeasurementSolution, which produces themost sensitive, high perform-ance phase noise measurementsin the industry.
The JS-1000 is the only solution on the market thatmeasures jitter in the frequency domain and the timedomain, thus leveraging over 20 years experience invery low phase noise measurements.
The advantages of the JS-1000 approach perfectlymatched Kumaran’s needs:
• The lowest intrinsic jitter in the industry: < 50µUI rms@10 Gb/s.
“The phase noise of the S19211 is very low andthe JS-1000 system with low noise floor helped usevaluate the true performance of our device.”
• An integrated system to measure jitter generation, tolerance, and transfer for clock and data jitter atmultiple frequencies (2.5/10/40 Gb/s).
“Since the JS-1000 can measure all the key jitterparameters, it allowed me to evaluate my devicequickly and saved me a lot of test time.”
• Diagnostic information beyond compliance toSONET/SDH standards in order to focus efforts.
“The JS-1000 allows you to look at the phasenoise within any bandwidth of interest up to 100 MHz, and this helped us identify jitter components and other anomalies.”
• Simple GUI and test methodology for quick resultson a wide variety of components and modules.
“I think that the flexibility offered by theJS-1000 makes it a very versatile system:easy to configure for different jitter tests, data rates and custom masks, unlike theother systems in the lab.”

AMCC staff engineer for the

AMCC first received the JS-1000 in February 2002.Since that time they have experienced many of thebenefits of the JS-1000 capabilities, and are simulta-neously gathering inputs to help guide the AgilentR&D team in future releases. This tight relationshipshould enable both companies to win business inthe future.
Results Beyond Compliance
The S19211 transceiver has performance specifica-tions beyond compliance, which can be proven withthe JS-1000 results. “Test data taken from the JS-1000is sent with each evaluation board to our potentialcustomers,” Kumaran says.
The S19211 SONET/SDH/FEC and 10 Gigabit Ether-net (GbE) transceiver is one of the latest additionsto AMCC’s SuperPHY™ product family. The S19211device provides fully integrated serialization/de-serialization capabilities for low power IntermediateReach (IR) OC-192applications. Thedevice performs allnecessary parallel-to-serial and serial-to-parallel functions inconformance withSONET/ SDH and10 GbE transmissionstandards. The standard operatingrange is from 9.953 Gbps to 11.1 Gbps. At 900mW, the S19211 delivers a 35% power savings over competingsolutions, making it the industry’s lowest power transceiver for IR applications.
S19211 Jitter Tolerance at 11.1 Gb/s for 25 mV 2 31-1 PRBS Input
“The JS-1000 helped us look over a range of fre-quencies, so that we were able to see beyond thespec, to the limits of the design. It’s very versatile. The system is excellent for jitter generation, toler-ance, and transfer, and the low noise floor. It savedme a lot of time.”
“This system has become a de-facto stan-dard for this type of measurement and ourfavorite piece of equipment, which is used allover the lab,” says Harvey Okui, an AMCCtest engineer in Operations.
