Dear Parents/Guardians,

I am delighted to present to you the ‘Annual Report to Parents’ for the school year 2018-2019. The report provides information about the activities, development and the progress the school has made over the last twelve months.

Since the last report, the school has continued to build on its successful Estyn inspection and good practice continues to take place at the school on a daily basis.

The school continues to strive to nurture “Ambitious, Brave, Creative and Caring Life Long Learners” through all of the activities, academic or otherwise, which are provided.

The school’s excellent academic standards have continued and this is reflected by the impressive end of key stage data with pupils in both the Foundation Phase, and in Key Stage 2, achieving highly. All staff work hard to enable each child to reach his or her potential.

I would like to thank each member of staff for their dedication, hard work and professionalism in what has been another busy year. Furthermore, I am grateful to my fellow governors, who give up their time to represent the views of all stakeholders at our meetings.

Thank you, parents and guardians, for your continued support, understanding and cooperation. By maintaining a strong and effective partnership between parents and school, we continue to ensure that the school sits at the heart of the Garden Village community. This is also integral to promoting the well-being of pupils and ensuring that the school is able to successfully move forward into another academic year.

Finally, I would like to thank the PTFA for their continued involvement in school life. Without their effective fundraising, planning and organisation of events, there would be fewer resources available and, for this, their hard work is greatly appreciated. I hope that they will continue to enjoy the support which they have had in recent years in order to enable them to continue to provide the school with resources which benefit all learners.

I hope that you will find the report interesting and informative and I would be pleased to hear any comments which you wish to make.

Mr Matthew Roberts, Chair of Governors

Our Mission Statement

The mission statement of the school, which was reviewed and renewed, following consultation with all

stakeholders in 2016, is

“Ambitious, Brave, Creative and Caring Life Long Learners”

The Aims of the School

We believe that the most effective way of achieving our aims is to encourage and praise positive behaviour. The following are the underlying principles we wish to nurture throughout our school:

Treat all members of the school community with consideration and respect;

Have an understanding of the difference between right and wrong;

Be polite, cooperative and friendly;

Understand that the school has rules which must be followed for the safety of all;

Appreciate the school environment and respect the property of others;

Value other people, their work and their opinions;

Respect the culture and belief of others;

Treat others as we wish to be treated ourselves. We believe that the most effective way of achieving these aims is through the promotion of enthusiasm and challenge, sharing and learning together, the acceptance and embracing of differences, openness, self-respect and persistence.

8. Target Setting

Looking ahead to 2019 – 2020 we aim to:

The School Development Plan identified the following priorities for development during the year:

9. School, Curriculum and Additional Learning Needs Language Category English is the first language and language of tuition. Welsh is taught as a second language. Speaking Welsh is an integral part of daily life throughout the school. Curriculum We aim to provide the best opportunities for all pupils to achieve their full potential. Children aged 3-7 follow the Foundation Phase Framework, and children aged 7-11 follow the National Curriculum. Classes are vertically integrated, work is differentiated to cater for all needs. The school provides a broad, balanced, relevant and challenging curriculum that meets statutory requirements and the needs of the range of learners and which ensures continuity and progression. It is being further enhanced by the philosophy of the Foundation Phase and the integration of the skills based experiential approach to learning. Long term planning involves curriculum maps and overviews for most subjects, which are then translated into more detailed half-termly and weekly plans and supplemented by lesson plans, where appropriate. We are preparing for the New Curriculum for Wales which will be statutory from September 2022. The new curriculum is underpinned by four core purposes which will support our children and young people to be:

Ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives.

Enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work.

Ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the world.

Healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society. The new curriculum will be:

A purpose-led curriculum – with the four purposes are the heart of curriculum development at a national and local level.

Organised as a continuum of learning from ages 3 to 16 – all children and young people will make progress along the same continuum.

Organised around progression steps, articulated as achievement outcomes

Inclusive of the three cross-curricular responsibilities.

Priority 1 To improve pedagogy and practice with a view to the new curriculum developments – Focus on raising standards in Science.

Priority 2 To continue to improve Foundation Phase pedagogy and practice with a view to the new curriculum developments – Focus on literacy & numeracy skills.

Priority 3 To continue to cater for whole school Wellbeing – The Mental Health and Wellbeing of Staff and Pupils

Mrs Nieanne Magness is our Additional learning Needs Coordinator (ALNCO). She is responsible for ensuring that the All Wales Code of Practice is implemented. All ALN pupils have an ‘Individual Educational Plan’ (IEP) this provides specific targets for development. All IEPs are reviewed at intervals agreed between school and parents. All IEPs have been implemented, updated and reviewed this school year and parents have been invited to join relevant staff for IEP review meetings. Outside agencies have been accessed as necessary to support staff and pupils. More able and talented pupils have been encouraged to develop their attributes, skills and potential, this includes working with MAT pupils from cluster schools. GwE Supporting Improvement Adviser, Cath McNamara, visited school regularly throughout the year to monitor education standards. In 2019, year 6 pupils transferred to the Darland High School, Rhosnesni High School and St Joseph’s High School. School Website - New for 2019/20, which includes a parents messaging App. 10. Arrangements for the Admission of Disabled Pupils We are keen to ensure that the needs of each individual in the school, regardless of ability or disability, should be met as far as possible. The needs of each pupil wishing to be admitted to the school will be discussed with their parents/carers and with any other agency involved. The Governing Body is committed to planning for the needs of people with disabilities – whether pupils, teachers or visitors when making alterations to the school building,

but in the meantime we have the flexibility to make arrangements to cater for particular needs, as far as we possibly can. 11. Sporting Aims and Achievements We aim to provide quality learning experiences that develop and enhance confidence and self-esteem, by teaching skills, encouraging refinement, and praising effort. Through sport, young people can learn to relate to each other, and experience both the disappointment of losing and the rewards of success. Toilet Facilities The school recognises that well-maintained toilet facilities, where pupils feel comfortable and safe, and have open access to throughout the school day, are essential for health, wellbeing, and learning. We value and respect our pupils and want them to be able to benefit from good provision and practice. We ensure toilets are available to pupils throughout the school day, and that the toilet and washroom facilities are suitable for the range of anticipated users, including pupils with disabilities and additional needs, with adequate lighting, fixtures and fittings. All toilet areas have properly maintained supplies at all times of warm and cold water, soap, hand drying facilities and toilet tissue in dispensers, provided at a convenient height. Toilet cleaning, supervision and inspection regime and in place to ensure proper standards of provision and cleanliness, throughout the school day. 17. Composition of this Report This report has been compiled in accordance with National Assembly for Wales Circular 01/08 (Revised 2013) in respect of Governors’ Annual Reports. The Schools Standards and Organisation (Wales) Act 2013 (The Act) removed the requirement for school governing bodies to hold an annual meeting with parents. Instead, new arrangements were introduced to enable parents to request up to three meetings in any school year with a Governing Body, on matters which are of concern to them. 10% of parents are needed to request a meeting. Information is available in school or on the Welsh Government website. As no requests were received, the Governing Body did not hold a meeting with parents last year. Thank you for taking the time to read this report.
