    nCARNATION ISSUE O

    Meheras GardenFrom Mehera/Meher

One day, Baba was admiring the owers in the garden. Colorul

varieties had been planted. Baba loved bright owers and

remarked, I like these very much. Tey look so pretty. Mehera

complained to him, Its not easy to grow these kind o owers

here at Meherazad, where the soil is so poor. We have to bring

soil rom ar away, near the lake. Ten, when heavy rains come,

the topsoil is washed away, because the ground at Meherazad

slopes. It takes so much time to grow these owers. Its a lot o

    work! Baba said Yes, that is why I appreciate it. Because thesoil is poor, you have to work hard, with so much care and love;

then the owers and plants that come up are special. Whats the

use i it is good soil, i you plant seeds, water them a little, and

they grow easily by themselves? I wouldnt have appreciated that

as much. Tis is how I like it. I appreciate the garden because o

    your eorts.

Mehera said, I look out on the garden and picture Babacoming round in the garden rom ar. I imagine I am runnin

to embrace him. Tese are some o the beautiul owers in

garden, Baba remarked, as he gestured towards the Meheraz

owerbed. Just then, as Mehera walked across the veranda,

Baba glanced in her direction and added, And that is the m

    beautiul ower.

History o the Meherabode GardensMeher Babas Maniestation took

    another upward push with the

    purchase o the Meherabode property

in 1977.One the o rst areas o development

was Meheras Rose Garden with more

than 20 special rose plants careully

chosen. Te diversity o rose plants are

located at the entrance corner o the

    main building.

An inventory o the trees was made,

and several that were cracking walls

and oundations had to be removed.

More than 18 new owering trees

planted, including dogwood, pinktrumpet ower, gold medallion, crape

    myrtle, jacaranda, Western redbud,

    and lilac.

One specimen, in particular, a very

    attractive ully mature Himalayan pine,

cedrus deodara, was lost due to over

    watering. Te culprit hidden, below

the surace, a broken pipeline soaking

the area during a heavy rainy season

did accelerate the decay and death o

the Himalayan pine. Te sprinklersystems have been upgraded, and

    repaired. Included in the irrigational

operations is an extensive drip system

to keep down water expenses. Te

Landscape Committee is very keen on

    practical management o the hardscape

    and sofscape environments. Tis will

greatly reduce the amount o water

    needed to sustain the Meherabode

    garden.

Te Greenhouse oor was excavated,a proessional metal grid, compacted

earth, and new paver stones applied.

    Tis transormation will be presented

in uture nCarnation issues as a

    Greenhouse slideshow. Te Domes

    stone pathways were completely

    restored, and complementary

    perennial gardens established at the

    parking lot edges.

    TeMonsoon Gardens, known as

    Upper Monsoon and Lower Monsoon

over the last ew years were completely

excavated. Tis entailed the removalo discarded concrete, reuse, and a

    hodgepodge o materials that had

been buried in these sections the last

    couple decades. Tese areas were

    revitalized with mulch, compost,

    amendments. Te Monsoon Gardens

    are gradually evolving as ower

gardens. Te diversity o trees that

    populate the grounds have received

    proessional trimming to maintain

their health and appearance. Te ruittrees -persimmon, avocado, g, and

citrus are showing new health afer

    applications o managed ertilization.

Vines were planted on neighbor ences

or privacy and their appearance is

    pleasingly attractive. Te bamboo

    grove required special attention. Afer

    a thorough trimming, shaving, and

rake cleaning o the bamboo grove

    appropriate nutrients were then

administered, and their appearanceis ull with a strong lea growth.

Hopeully in the uture we can add

    additional ornamental bamboo to

special areas to enhance the visual

    appearance o the Center.

An new area incorporated into the

    expanding garden montage is the

    vegetable garden. Te vegetable

garden is located in the northern

areas adjacent to the Domes exterior

landscape. Te distinct advantage othis area is the complement o ull

sun. Here we have thriving a harvest

    o pumpkins, tomatoes, onions,

    lemongrass, tomato, beets, parley,

    squash. Tis area is aectionately

known as the Victory Garden. A

    complete Jai. In uture nCarnation

issues we will delve ully into our

    extensive exterior ambitions. o

complete this brie survey it is

    by intensive mulching and soil

    improvements that we have enhanced

all planted areas. Tese deliberate actswill assist in implementing aggressive

    community, conservation eorts.

    Tese improvements have mostly been

    accomplished with special donations.

    Tese generous contributions,

    especially during these austere

    nancial times, sofens the impact

    on the Centers ongoing operational

    needs.

    GARDEN SOAPBOX

    THE VOLUNTEER AND THE WORKER

The Garden Soapbox is where we sprout

an abundance of opinion, insight, and an

    occasional philosophical statement.

Its this impression: that as devoteeswe incarnate to serve this AncientOne, His Advents. For ages sittingin plain view is the sign up sheetfor volunteers. he volunteer leafwith a few smudges, in its various

incarnations, exists, unsigned.Public announcement sent throughthe Internet soliciting help failedto arouse interest. he regularcrew can only accomplish in theirwork flow just enough to keep thegrounds attractive. he apathy ofcommunity support and it generalresistance is informative andrevealing. his is an aspect of HisManifestation, this Meher BabaCenter, His Los Angles residence. For those who enter His one acreproperty they may be a simplevisitor, and for the remainderdedicated to His Manifestation, devoted slaves. Hopefully theCall will exit the wilderness andfind support close to home.

As explained by Meher Baba at

    Rajahmundry, Andhra StateMarch, 1954

A few excerpts from thismagnificent article: o chantmy Arti, to perform my Puja, togarland me, to offer me fruits andsweets, and to bow down to memean absolutely nothing. Fromages eternal, Gods have beenperforming my real Puja. It is wastage of money on garlands,

fruits and sweets as offerings to mefor the conventional Puja, and a sheerwastage of breath and energy merelyto chant my Arti. What I want fromall my lovers is real, unadulteratedlove, and from my genuine workers I expect real work done.

Now with this introduction, letus switch to the main points ofMy Work and Babas Workers.hose who have assembled herehave been called workers of Baba;therefore, you must necessarily

understand first what my work is.But somehow I feel that somethingis very wrong deep down. It isnatural that amongst workers of anycause, political, social or spiritual, there are bound to be differences ofopinion. But these very differencesof opinion and competitionsand jealousies lead to absolutebreakdown of the very basis of work.

Now it is time you realize tyou have been called upon do Babas work, and you hbeen called Babas work

herefore to call yourselas my workers and yet not obey me would be hypocriti When the Powerhouse is switcon, wherever there are electric buland if they have connection with powerhouse, there will be light.some of the bulbs are of small candpower, the light will be little. If soof the bulbs are of high candpower, the light will be bright. If bulb is fused, there will be no lighall. I perform no miracles, but whI break my silence, the first and last miracle will be performed. Lme whole-heartedly. hat is the othing. Love me, love me, love me alove me, and then you will find m

Scattered over the world there are billions o tinypostage stamp properties. All these billions ostamps inhabited by humanity. Along the pacifccontinental shel smack dab in the middle o LosAngeles is a one acre postage stamp parcel. Tisis a special Advent stamp. It is a marvelous git.Certifed and postmarked by the Ancient One.Tis limited edition stamp is priceless. Locatedwithin this His living, breathing Advent parcelstamp is the Victory Garden. Herbs, ruits, andvegetables.

    From the epic Maya Journals:

Victory gardens were planted in backyards, front yards, playgrounds, and on apartment-building rooftops,

with the occasional vacant lot commandeered for the maya war effort! During the Manifestation shop-

ping centers were torn down, and the land reclaimed for the victory garden. The government turned to its

citizens and encouraged them to plant a Victory Garden. They wanted individuals to provide their own

fruits and vegetables. The government began to pass out seed packets from the Latent Seed Company.

Nearly 220 million Americans answered the call. They planted their Victory Gardens in neighborhoods,

parks, and vacant lots. Neighbors pooled their resources, planted different kinds of foods and formed

Meher Baba cooperatives, all in the name of Truth.

On this Gods one acre are many victory gardens. Between the south end, lower Monsoon Gardenand the north end, upper Monsoon Garden are patches of gardens making up the whole quilt. Therose garden, the pumpkin patch, the fruit tree orchards, and the various ower gardens.

    Vegetable Garden

The crops in our average harvest arebeets, tomatoes, acorn squash, carrots, zucchini, broccoli, pumpkins, mint, parsley.Occasionally a bird may y over and drop intothe loam a fresh seed.

The greatest challenge besides the unendingweeding, tilling, composting is water

management. To keep water expenses downwe have water timers, drips systems, and mosturgent a willing water walla to keep saturatedand soak our one acre.
