We hope that you find this short term discipleship trip experience valuable for these reasons and many more:

that this experience MOVES YOUR FAMILY beyond your usual routine of "busyness" and allows God to speak to you in a new and different way.

that you are barraged with NEW EXPERIENCES and ideas. You will be breaking new ground and experiencing more new things in one day than in the last month.

that you are PUSHED out of your comfort zone and humbled. You will learn that we are not in control of anything. You will be giving up privacy, certain food, routines, etc.

that in the process of getting ready and while on the ground, you will be newly EQUIPPED biblically and theologically.

that you will prayerfully consider new levels and ways of SERVICE when you return to your mission field where God has placed you the other 51 weeks out of the year. Life is a long term mission opportunity and every day and every appointment is a short term mission opportunity.

that you will experience how God works ELSEWHERE IN THE WORLD in other cultures and contexts.

that you will return with a NEW PERSPECTIVE of your own circumstances and new desire to STEWARD your resources in a God-honoring way. “To whom much has been given, much is required.”

that you will be reminded of the GREAT COMMAND (Matthew 22:36-40) and the GREAT COMMISSION (Matthew 28:16-20) and will commit to live this out more deeply when you return.

that you will be sharpened in your ability to ARTICULATE THE GOSPEL with boldness.

Brief History of HaitiThe native Taino Amerindians - who inhabited the island of Hispaniola when it was discovered by Columbus in 1492 - were virtually annihilated by Spanish settlers within 25 years. In the early 17th century, the French established a presence on Hispaniola. In 1697, Spain ceded to the French the western third of the island, which later became Haiti. The French colony, based on forestry and sugar-related industries, became one of the wealthiest in the Caribbean but only through the heavy importation of African slaves and considerable environmental degradation. In the late 18th century, Haiti's nearly half million slaves revolted under Toussaint L'Ouverture. After a prolonged struggle, Haiti became the first black republic to declare independence in 1804.

The ongoing power struggles, violence and corruption in Haiti have led to a nation ravaged by poverty. Widespread unemployment haunts the people of Haiti. More than two thirds of the Haitian labor force does not have formal jobs and those who are employed typically make less than $2 a day. In the face of such poverty, an estimated 173,000 children become domestic servants.

The massive deforestation of Haiti – caused by international industrialization and a local population desperate for cheap energy sources – exacerbates the damage of even minor storms. Without roots to hold it in place, topsoil is stripped and chronic flooding wreaks havoc on the people, their crops, and their homes.

For the many people already living on the margin of poverty, when natural disaster strikes, the effect is massive. Haiti is plagued by hurricanes and tropical storms. In 2008 alone, four major storms hit Haiti – three within a two month period. An estimated 800,000 people were affected, with almost 23,000 homes destroyed and more than 84,000 homes damaged. On January 12, 2010, a massive earthquake left approximately 300,000 dead and over 1 million people displaced from their homes. The tremors demolished the already weak infrastructure and affected an estimated three million people. Most of these people still live in temporary structures, whether make shift homes or tents. The places where many tents have been put up together are called tent cities.

Capitol City: Port-Au-Prince Population: 9,035,536 of Haiti

Religion: Roman Catholic 80%, Protestant 16% (Baptist 10%, Pentecostal 4%, Adventist 1%, other 1%), none 1%, other 3% Note: roughly half of the population practices voodoo.

Mission of Hope, Haiti - Past, Present, and Future

Mission of Hope was founded by Bob & Sharon Johnson in Haiti, where they were able to acquire a piece of barren land just north of Port-au-Prince. Their vision was to build a mission complex that would effectively reach out and minister to the physical and spiritual needs of the less fortunate people in Haiti.

In 1998, the torch was passed to Bob & Sharon’s son, Brad, and his wife, Vanessa. As they felt the call on their lives to make Haiti their home, they became pioneers of what was to become Mission of Hope as we know it today.

Church of HopeThe Church of Hope is open to whosoever desires to come together to worship God and learn more about having an intimate, life-changing experience with Him. Over 1500 children, youth and adults come from nearby villages to attend Sunday Morning Worship service! School of HopeThe School of Hope has approximately 5,000 students enrolled this school year in Kindergarten through High School. The School of Hope is currently in need of sponsors. Without Sponsorship, many of the students would not be able to attend school.

Hope HouseThere are over 65 children currently at Hope House orphanage. The Hope House provides a loving home and 24 hour care for these children. Each child is truly a blessing from God.

Village of HopeThe Village of Hope project construction is underway on the first 16 houses. Once the Village of Hope is completed the Hope House will be able to care for 240 children in 40 homes. There are also plans for a sports facility, learning center and dining hall for the Village of Hope.

Hospital of HopeHope Hospital is an onsite medical clinic staffed by Haitian and international medical personnel. It provides the following services to the Haitians at MOH and in the surrounding villages: Daily Medical and Ministry Clinics, 24-hour emergency room care, surgical unit, and medical wards for children, women, and men.

Clinic of HopeThe Operating Clinic Opened July of 2008. The Clinic is open 5 days a week seeing an average of 60 patients per day. It is equipped with a Pharmacy and a testing lab.

The MOH FDC provides over 60,000 meals per day through the MOH center and MOH’s feeding project, “Haiti 1.” It includes an onsite facility for receiving and sending out food to partners throughout Haiti. MOH’s goal is to create 9 regional distribution sites throughout Haiti through their new 50,000 sq.ft warehouse and ministry partner Convoy of Hope

Prosthetics Clinic

In April, 2010 just two and a half months after the devastating earthquake rocked the country Mission of Hope opened the doors to their Prosthetics Clinic. MOH sees 3 to 4 patients each week who receive a prosthetic leg and at least one patient each week comes in for a minor adjustment to their prosthetic leg.

The Prosthetics clinic at Mission of Hope is a unique opportunity for us to minister and love on the broken and hurting people of this nation. Each patient stays with us for a week in the patient ward. During their time with us they are loved on by our staff and visiting mission teams, where they experience the love of God first hand. The patients also bond with each other. They encourage each other, learn from each other and laugh together. They begin to understand that they are not alone in this battle. Lives are being transformed every day in our clinic.

Hope 500Mission of Hope is building a community for earthquake victims. On a 200 acre property given to us by the Haitian government we are building a 500 home community. We are also rebuilding up to 100 individual homes in our local community.

Each home is 16’ x 16’ and includes an outdoor porch area for cooking. Each plot of land will include a 1,500 square foot plot of garden space so each family can grow their own food, learning to be self-sustainable. We will also provide agricultural training for each family. Each home will also have room for the family to add on to their home, doubling it in size if they choose to do so.

The families will receive their home free of charge. Each family will be required to pay a small community upkeep fee each month. At the end of their fifth year in their home the family will be given the deed to the property.

RAISING SUPPORT FOR YOUR HAITI TRIP Many people already have been blessed by the Lord with the resources needed for this trip. However, we believe the Lord can use support-raising as a “faith builder” in your life. This is not something to be taken lightly; you can have a lot of fun mixed in with all the hard work.

Here are some suggestions to help you get started:

1. PRAY. Express your total dependence on our Lord. Enlist others in your community to pray with you.

2. MAKE A LIST OF PROSPECTS. Start with your community FIRST, and involve them in the process. How can they help you? Pray for ideas and list people who come to mind. Include church friends, relatives, neighbors, school mates, club and civic contacts, and your Christmas card list. How about your doctor, lawyer, dentist? Do not leave people off your list because you think they will not or cannot support you. God may have other plans. You may want to write several different versions of your letter depending on who you are mailing it to.

3. RECORD AND PRIORITIZE YOUR PROSPECTS.4. SEND EMAIL or MAIL LETTER. See sample on following page.5. COLLECT YOUR DONATIONS. Collect them so you will know who to thank.

Turn them in periodically during your collection period.6. MAKE FOLLOW-UP CONTACTS. Do this by phone if you can’t do it in

person. 7. KEEP TRACK. As you receive gifts, have a simple way to keep track. 8. DONATIONS. Make on-line donations made at www. Haiti Feb. 2016

Family Trip or send checks to Watermark Community Church, 7540 LBJ Dallas 75251, Attn: Karen Bundren.

9. SAY THANK YOU. Write thank you cards to those who participate through prayer or giving.

10. SERVE GOD ON THE CAMPAIGN.10. SAY THANK YOU AGAIN AS YOU REPORT THE RESULTS

Support Raising Tips:

Make sure the memo line has the following information – Haiti Relief/Participant’s Last Name.

Make sure checks are made out to Watermark Community Church. Tax receipts will be mailed directly to each donor. If checks are made to you directly, you can endorse the back of the check with your signature and write “payable to Watermark Community Church.”

Due to IRS guidelines on non-profit organizations, Watermark will not be able to refund donations if you choose not to participate in the trip.

Once you have collected your donations, mail your checks:

Immunizations

Everyone should get an up to date tetanus shot, Hepatitis A and B vaccine and typhoid. Corporate Health Management {(214) 361-0095} is a clinic which we many Watermark folks have used in the past, but there are multiple options available including the Dallas county health department that will immunize children under 14 (some clinics will not). For many children today the typhoid vaccination is the only one they’ve not received before. Corporate Health Management7515 Greenville Avenue, Suite 605Dallas, TX 75231214.361.0995(Located at the NW corner of Greenville and Walnut Hill, in a Bank of America Building)

Malaria PillsAll travelers to Haiti must obtain chloroquine or other anti-malaria medication. The immunization facility can typically give you a prescription for this. Pills should be taken on a full stomach. If you are taking other medications or have other medical conditions, please consult your doctor before taking chloroquine or other anti-malaria medication.

Personal Medications If you take prescription medications, bring enough to last the entire trip. If you have special needs while in Haiti (such as a medical condition, food allergies, or other special requirements) please let us know before the trip. Any and all personal medication should be brought in your carry-on luggage.

First Aid for Personal Needs Recommended personal items and medications are:

1. Band-Aids2. First-aid ointment3. Sun Screen – minimum 50 spf.4. Anti-diarrhea medication5. Cold tablets6. Ibuprofen/Tylenol7. Insect-bite medication8. Prescription antibiotics such as Cipro, Bactrim, or Flagyl

Other Important InfoInsectsMosquitos are very common in Haiti. We suggest you bring extra-strength insect repellent and insecticide sprays are useful for repelling mosquitoes and spraying sleeping quarters.

Water & Food Do not drink or brush your teeth with the tap water from bathroom faucets. Filtered water will be provided for you at MOH. You can safely drink the filtered water at MOH. Drink as much water as possible even when you do not feel thirsty because it is easy to get dehydrated in Haiti. The sun is hot, the humidity high, and most service projects require you to be in the heat for long periods of time. Please bring a reusable water bottle with you so you can have it with you each day at all times.

Unless told differently eat only foods prepared by cooks at MOH or at places the MOH staff directs a team to eat at. Teams will enjoy a variety of meals including both Haitian and American foods. If you are eating in public places, unless told otherwise by MOH staff, avoid eating fruit or vegetables and eat only food that has been thoroughly cooked.

Soft drinks and snacks will be for sale in MOH guest house snack shop for $1.

BathroomThe bunk house at MOH does have full bathroom facilities. When showering, shaving, etc. please use as little water as possible by only using water to wet and rinse. This water is suitable for bathing purposes, but not for drinking. Water is very precious in Haiti. Only use filtered water when brushing teeth. Money & Valuables The amount of money you take will depend on your desire to buy souvenirs. We recommends bringing $50-$100 small bills ($1, $5, or $10) for souvenirs, offsite activities, and emergency situations. There will be vendors selling souvenirs at MOH and also at the beach. Any group activities that are paid for in cash will be funded by the team leader from our team resources.

Please do not tip anyone during our trip. The team leader will handle this for our entire team.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance is required for all groups & individuals traveling to Mission of Hope. It will either be provided by Watermark or by MOH to allow for emergency treatment and evacuation.

This is a country where one could easily offend another by wearing the wrong thing.  Young people in Haiti look to North American’s for their style and they try to copy some looks that are not ideal for this culture.  Adults typically judge others by style and in turn determine who they can trust and respect by what they wear.

This is a sensitive subject for some people but for the short time that you will be visiting Haiti please respect the culture and honor the request of our partner, MOH.  If you are not appropriately dressed, your team leader will ask you to change. If you are not sure on whether an outfit is acceptable, don’t pack it.

approval from Mission of Hope staff or Team Leaders. Do go with an attitude to serve more than you’ve ever served before! Do go with a heart to put others before yourself! Do go knowing and ready for things to not always be on time AND that they will

function differently than in America. Do leave your “I have all the answers and know how to do it best” at home. You

are part of a larger team of servants, not Superman.

Do model cooperation, servant hood, grace, and love in relationships with team members and Haitians.

Do obey the boss, your team leaders in this case. Respect authority.

Do avoid being critical, you may not have all the information.

Do look for ways to help others. Don’t just sit around waiting for someone to give you direction. Be proactive.

Do watch your humor. What you intend as innocent may devastate your national hosts or others on your team. If you sense you have offended someone, ask for forgiveness (reference Philippians 2:5-11 and Jesus’ humble spirit).

Don’t video or take pictures without requesting permission. This may be offensive to some Haitians.

Do leave expensive jewelry at home. Don’t leave cash, jewelry, or other valuables in checked luggage. Oh, and did we mention DO BE FLEXIBLE!

WORKING WITH A TRANSLATER Working with a translator can be a challenging experience, both for the one

speaking and the one translating! When blessed by God, it can also be a rewarding experience for everyone involved. Keep in mind that while you are trying to communicate in such a way as to be understood by those who speak another language and have a different cultural background, your translator is working to do the same thing in TWO languages at the same time! Here are a few tips borne of experience and observation, as well as a lot of trial and error:  If possible, spend some time talking with your translator before

working with them to speak in public. Let them get used to hearing your voice and how your form your sentences.

Avoid using clichés and colloquial phrases. (Examples: “give me a break!” “Totally awesome!” “Chill out!” “Back off!” “Quit freaking out!” “Holy Cow!” “Let’s do it!” “Elvis has left the building!” “Get real!”)

Avoid using contractions such as “can’t,” “don’t,” “I’m,” “they’re,” etc. Instead, use the full phrase such as “cannot,” “do not,” “I am.”

When speaking before a group, do NOT look at your translator when talking. You are not speaking “to“ your translator. You are speaking ‘through’ your translator. As much as possible, make eye contact with your audience because you are speaking to them.

Wait until your translator has completely finished speaking before you begin talking again. Overlapping can be confusing and can lead to missed phrases and words.

Speak in complete thoughts. Speak in complete sentences. Your…initial tendency…might be….to speak…in small phrases…because you think…they will not…understand…what you are trying…to…say. Don’t do that. Your translator needs to understand your complete thought to know where you are going.

Try to limit your spoken thoughts to one complete sentence at a time. The delay while you wait for translation will give you time to gather your thoughts and possibly make your next sentence more meaningful.

Avoid relying on references from American contemporary culture to describe things. They aren’t familiar with the latest sitcom on television, or the newest blockbuster movie, or the top-charting albums, or American sports (apart from maybe Michael Jordan), etc.

Finally, make sure to thank and encourage your translator for all of their efforts on your behalf. And may God grant all of us from both countries, unity, clarity, understanding and the power to be an effective witnessing team for Jesus.

Many people feel that to be effective in evangelism they must memorize a complex illustration and a multitude of verses. But the Gospel is most powerful when shared with love, clarity, and simplicity.

One-Verse Evangelism(r) is a simple, interactive way to share Christ's love conversationally and visually. It is based on asking questions and sharing. It's easy to learn because it uses just one verse. One-Verse Evangelism(r) is also sensitive to peoples' busy schedules because it can be shared in just 10 or 15 minutes.

Here's a brief look at how it works. Let's say God's leading you to share the Gospel with your neighbor, Jeff. Write out Romans 6:23 on a piece of paper or a napkin: "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (NIV). Then put your Bible away. Ask Jeff if he would like to see a simple picture based on this verse that will explain God's relationship with people.

Page 24: Amazon S3 · Web view2016/05/16  · Sévi Haiti Family Discipleship Trip February 11 - 16, 2016 Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to

Circle this word and ask, "How would you feel if your boss refused to pay you the wages that were due to you?" Deep down, we all know that it is only right that we get what we deserve. Similarly, we earn wages from God for how we have lived our lives.

Draw a circle around "sin," asking your friend what he thinks when he hears this word. You might explain that sin is more an attitude than an action. It can be either actively fighting God or merely excluding Him from our lives. You can ask, "Has God ever seemed far away?" If he says "Yes," add that that's one of the things sin does-it makes God seem far away. Now draw two opposing cliffs with a gap in between.

Circle this word and ask what thoughts come to mind. Explain that death in the Bible always means some kind of separation.

While circling this word, mention that it is important because it means that a sharp contrast in thought is coming. What we have just looked at is bad news; what follows is good news.

Draw a circle around this word. Ask, "If wages are what a person earns, then what is a gift?" Remind your friend that someone must purchase every gift.

Circle this and explain that the gift you are talking about is free. It is from God Himself. It's so special that no one else can give it. Ask, "How do you feel when someone gives you a special gift?"

Page 25: Amazon S3 · Web view2016/05/16  · Sévi Haiti Family Discipleship Trip February 11 - 16, 2016 Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to

Circle these two words next, and then ask, "How would you define these words?" Contrast one side of the cliff, death, with the other side, eternal life. Ask, "What is the opposite of separation from God?"

Draw these words so they create a bridge between the two cliffs. Help your friend to consider that every gift has a giver, and only Jesus Christ can give the gift of eternal life.

Write this word over the bridge you just drew. Explain that friends trust each other, and tell your friend that Jesus wants a trusting friendship with him. All he has to do is admit that he is responsible for the "sin" of either fighting or excluding God from his life. That is what trust means-trusting that Jesus wants to forgive us for rejecting Him from our lives. At this point, you can ask him if he wants to start a relationship with God that will last forever. If he says "Yes," invite him to pray a short prayer in his own words, asking Jesus to forgive him.

Close by reminding him that this simple illustration shows what God is like: Someone who really cares about people, especially him. Invite him to read all about it in the Bible, perhaps beginning in the gospel of John.

Over 80% of Haiti’s population lives on less than $2 a day. Two dollars a day for food, housing, school, transportation, medical

emergencies, and all other expenses. The $2 a Day Challenge invites you to experience a bit of what life is like for

the vast majority of Haitians by eating on less than two dollars a day for one week.

No other living expenses – just eating. And as an added bonus, you may learn to cook healthy meals on less than $2 a day!

The challenge has three simple rules: Spend only $2 per day per person on all food and drinks.

You can only eat what you buy during the week of the challenge – no stocking up on food the week before!

If you spend more than $2 one day, simply deduct the amount you went over from the next day’s expenses. Eating basic food like pasta, rice, eggs, potatoes, and beans can help you meet the challenge.

You can buy in mass quantity or exchange meals with friends– just be sure to subtract the total you spend on bulk purchase from the rest of the week’s spending.
