Amazing Begins.
This is a place of amazing beginnings.
Just as the San Antonio River originates on our
campus from an underwater spring known as
the Blue Hole, so too do students rise up to
greatness at the University of the Incarnate
Word. In a diverse and highly supportive
learning community, where small classes and
caring professors make possible unmatched
individual attention, our students set out boldly
on journeys they would have otherwise never
dared to dream. Through liberal arts, they learn to
think. In active classrooms, they begin to engage.
With internships, they gain valuable experience.
Through study abroad, they see the world. Like
the San Antonio River, they begin a journey, grow
mightily along the way, and ultimately arrive at
an amazing place. Come begin your own journey.
This is more than just a diploma; it’s a degree.
This is the University of the Incarnate Word.
This is where amazing begins.
Whatever your dream, this is the place to pursue it. Here, in a smaller, more personalized learning environment, you
will be encouraged and empowered as never before. Here, professors
will know you and mentor you. Academic advisors will work with
you to ensure your academic success. Peer mentors will share with
you and advise you. Career counselors will help shape and guide
your career path. And our Division of Student Success – yes, we
have an entire division dedicated to your success – will make sure
you have every possible resource to achieve your academic and
career goals. Here at UIW, your success is our goal. Bring your dream –
and let amazing begin.
Success Begins.
“UIW gave me the support and encouragement to
become my best and pursue my dreams. It was a
great foundation on which to build my career. My
education at UIW exposed me to so much, giving me the focus and confidence to succeed in my career
and to go out and make a difference in the world.”
“At UIW, I have received a great amount of support from every professor. One of my professors helped arrange an internship for me in a bank. They are always there to help and encourage me, preparing me for success in my career.”

“Having no more than 20 people in my classes has been a major factor in my success at UIW. I have formed great relationships with my advisor and professors; they are always there when I need them.”

At UIW, we offer nearly 80 undergraduate and graduate programs of study in virtually every field. With a low student-to-faculty ratio of 14:1, we’re able to design
each of our programs to be highly interactive. Here, students
engage – really engage – in their education. They work on real
projects – collaborating with real professionals. They participate in
internships – sometimes two or three. They do original research –
work normally associated with graduate students. They serve in the
community – putting their academic skills to work. They come to
UIW, they acquire knowledge, and they gain invaluable experience
as well. It gives them perspective. It gives them confidence. It gives
them an edge.
engagement Begins.
The School of Pharmacy is the only private school of pharmacy in Texas.
The Hispanic Marketing program is one of only three such programs in the U.S.
Education students spend more than 400 hours in the field – before their student teaching begins.
Science students present their research at regional and national workshops and conferences.
In Broadcast Meteorology, the only program of its kind in Texas, students work on the air in UIW’s brand-new HD television studio.
UIW offers the state’s only Nuclear Medicine Technology degree program.
Information Systems students use “Second Life,” a real-time 3-D multi-user virtual environment to collaborate with students around the world.
The School of Optometry is just one of 20 schools of optometry in the nation and the only one at a faith-based university.
As one of the oldest schools of nursing west of the Mississippi River, UIW graduates successfully pass state exams.
Fashion Management students display their work each year at the “Cutting Edge” Fiesta® Fashion Show, a New York-style runway presentation produced by students.

Mathematics, science, and engineering students are involved in a wide range of research – from DNA dynamics, infectious disease transmission, and neurological regeneration, to the behavior of electric fish, the chemistry of medicinal plants, and flight controls.
Students in our athletic training and rehabilitative sciences programs are well prepared for entrance to our new physical therapy program.

Look closely at UIW and you will see the face of Texas...and the world. Ours is a diverse community at UIW,
the most diverse of any school in San Antonio and one of the most
diverse of any private school in the state. Here, you have students
from Turkey, Afghanistan, Germany, Korea, Mexico, and China – in a
single class. More than 60 countries are represented on our campus,
making for a rich international experience for all who come here.
But our campus is only one place you’ll learn about other cultures.
UIW is also a national leader in study abroad, with more than
90 programs in over 30 countries. Spend a summer, semester, or
year studying abroad – for essentially the same cost as studying on
campus. It’s a fascinating world we live in. Come to UIW, where
The Universe is Yours™.
Access to the World Begins.
Access to the World Begins.
Access To A World Of InformationTechnology is an integral part of a UIW education. All of our students carry mobile computing technology, whether a laptop, a Dell netbook or an iPad. We are a fully wired – and wireless – campus. In addition, we provide our students a suite of applications to run on their Blackberry or iPhone, such as our own video channel (keep up with activities), our own sports channel (check out Cardinals scores), and more. Plus, over 70% of our instructors teach their courses using Blackboard, a combination of in-class and online learning. This is 21st-century technology. This is a 21st century education.

there are many ministry and mission opportunities. Want to sharpen
your leadership skills? Join our student government, lead a club,

involved Begins.
Why Choose An Active Campus?
Research shows that employers are
not only looking for graduates who can
get the job done individually, but
who can also work well in a team. An
active, involved UIW education teaches you
those collaborative, team-oriented skills.

The Fun Goes On And On
The Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word founded UIW in 1881, and today we are the largest Catholic university
in the Southwest. Ours is a Catholic tradition, but here, we lift up
and celebrate all faiths. Our hope and our Mission is that, whatever
your faith, you will come here and grow in it. This sense of Mission
is inherent in us. It began long ago when the Sisters began building
hospitals and schools, and it continues today with our passion for
community service and social justice. While the world is changing
to care for others and help the less fortunate, we always have. It is
not something we have to try to do; it is who we are. And if you
come here, this deep sense of faith, Mission and service will become
a part of you.
A Sense of Mission Begins.
Mission At WorkUIW students are required to do 45 hours of community service before they graduate, but many of our students do at least 20 hours each year – often tied to their area of study. On a campus of such diversity, our students are simply more aware of the world’s problems. And, more importantly, they are setting out to do something about them.

Classic architecture set on 154 scenic acres. Finely
manicured lawns. Blooming flowers. Majestic trees. This is the idyllic
campus setting – a place you’ll be delighted to call home. And
around our campus, it is beautiful as well; UIW is located in Alamo
Heights, one of the most picturesque areas in all of San Antonio.
And just minutes away is downtown San Antonio, with its world-
class attractions and every imaginable form of entertainment. This is
the perfect college location – strikingly beautiful, extremely safe and
highly convenient. This is Alamo Heights. This is San Antonio. This
is UIW. This is home.

“At UIW, I was able to participate and join in,
as opposed to feeling lost at a larger public university. I had many
great experiences at UIW, and they have
enabled me to further my personal goals and
continue successfully through my career.”

When one hears the words “private college education,” one of the first thoughts is “great education, but unaffordable.” Although UIW is a private college, and it is
indeed an exceptional education, you’ll be surprised to know
just how affordable it is. Approximately 92% of UIW students
receive financial aid, with more than $70 million spent annually in
scholarships, work-study, grants and loans. What this means is that
there are many options to make your UIW education affordable. Let
us help you with your options. Our Office of Financial Assistance
will assist you in every way we can. A UIW education is no doubt
an investment. But it is one, you can be sure, that will bring you a
lifetime of returns.
Hispanic DistinctionHispanic Outlook
ranks UIW as one of the top 100
universities across the nation to grant bachelor’s degrees
to Hispanics, top 100 four-year
Hispanic serving institutions, and top 100 universities for awarding master’s
degrees to Hispanics.
