    To promote Italian Excellence

Ihave recently accepted the position ofPresident of the Ente Triennale, af-ter completing my second mandate asMayor of Cremona last June. Sincebecoming Mayor in 1995, I have hadthe opportunity to explore the world ofviolinmaking, and understand how im-

portant its role is for the image and rep-utation of Cremona in the world. Ihave also become increasingly interestedin this field, which, along with classicalmusic, represents the core of our historyand culture. My passion for violinmak-ing has now led to my engagement asPresident of this prestigious organiza-tion, which I hope will take on an in-creasingly more prominent role both atthe local and at the international level. To this end, I have enlisted the collabo-ration of several people (some of whom,

partnership with Cremonafiere, both inthe organization of Mondomusica, maintaining the focus on violinmakingas weve done in recent years, and inorganizing participation in other con-ventions around the world. Re-evaluate the cost-benefit ratio of

the varied contests for musicians. Highlight the importance of the col-lection of instruments that the Ente hasacquired through the international con-tests and that constitute a world-classdisplay of contemporary violinmaking. This could be done by organizing ini-tiatives that enable the use of these in-struments, for instance by granting theiruse to emerging and well known musi-cians that are interested in being invol-ved in this project. Invest more resources in public rela-tions in order to further advertise ouractivities throughout the world andstrengthen our presence abroad. Reaffirm the centrality of our orga-nization within the violinmaking worldin Cremona, strengthening our part-nerships with all of the institutions thatwork in the fields of classical music andviolinmaking (the Theater, the Violin-making School, the Department of Mu-sicology, the trade organizations, theMusic School, and so forth). Revise the statute of our organizationto make it more compatible with thecurrent tasks and situations.

Change the organizations name tosomething that gives a better idea of ourgoal and activities, especially abroad. Set up partnerships and collaborationswith the major musical institutions athome and abroad. Involve the regional government in

the support of our activities. Seek European Union funding for re-search and development in violinmaking. Seek private sponsors that are inte-rested in associating their brand with theuniversal idea of excellence evoked bythe Stradivari name. Organize meetings of amateur musi-cians (who are potential clients of ourviolinmakers) during our events. Open our events not just to classicalmusic, but also to all music genres thatuse string instruments, such as folk, eth-nic, jazz, and so forth. Provide scholarships to young violin-making researchers. As you can see,the ideas are many and certainly ambi-tious, vis a vis our economic and orga-nizational resources.

However, the first step is to believe, andto work with persistence and a healthydose of optimism. This is my vow asPresident, supported by the belief thatall of the institutions in the city will giveus the support and collaboration thatwe need.

    Paolo BodiniPresident Ente Triennale

Afew months ago, a fter spendingseveral years working for the Sa-lone Cremona Mondomusica, I accept-ed a position as Executive Director ofthe Ente Triennale. As I start workingtowards the implementation of the pro-gram set forth by the President and ap-proved by the Board and the Assembly,I think that the best way to introducemyself is to tell you a little bit about mypast. While I am aware t hat the goalswe set are challenging, I am convincedthat the city of Cremona has the capac-ity to reach them, and I am happy toprovide my exp erience and e xpertise, knowing that this will also be a won-derful occasion for professional enrich-ment and growth. I started working onmusical instruments in 1978, after serv-ing as editor for an international pub-lishing company and, before that, work-ing in the textile industry. I was bornin Como, and I grew up close to theworld of silk in its most noble form, asproducing clothes for t he high fashionmade in Italy was a family tradition. So in the midst of drawings, hand madeprints and pure fabrics, I followed theAsian market (where most of the buyersof our best products were), while at thesame time attending university. My introduction to the world of violin-making came through writing my thesisin English Literature on the Hill familyand on the British perspective on Ital-ian violinmaking, as well as through mycollaboration with a group of expertsand enthusiasts working to develop thenewly established City of Milan Violin-making School. Over the course of 25years, my career has been devoted pri-marily to the professional training of

young violinmakers and restorers.I have always thought that school shouldbe an open and interactive place, andthat the relationship with professionals, the territory, and the institutions thatcarry out research and the preservationand protection of our artistic heritage isindispensable for learning the professionand creating the preconditions for hold-

ing a real job. Therefore, I brought thestudents outside of the classrooms and ofthe strict scholastic curriculum.Over the years, I have diversified theclasses by analyzing market trends andstudying new perspectives. I have alsoexpanded the curricula to include notonly stringed instruments (which werealready traditionally covered by the In-ternational Violinmaking School in Cre-mona) but also copies of historic instru-ments, lutes, mandolins, classic, acoustic and electric guitars, and soforth. While doing so, I continued topay particular attention to personal re-lationships and to the study of the histo-ry of the violinmaking tradition.Over the past few years, I have had theopportunity to travel around the worldto explore the international markets formusical instruments. I have also con-tributed to the growth and revival of theSalone Cremona Mondomusica with its

relocation to the convention center andthe partnership with Cremonafiere. Iwas the curator of various violinmak-ing exhibits both in Italy and abroad, and I supervised the publication of therelated catalogs as well. With a project on Italian Excellen-cies, I brought the String Quartet ofthe Scala, along with several master-

Amati, Guarneri and St radivari. Onthe contrary, we have to earn this posi-tion, and be able to sustain it amidst in-ternational competition from places thatmight not have our history, but certain-ly have a great deal of dynamism, re-search, and operative capacity, coupled

with much greater economic and orga-nizational resources. We must all worktogether to make Cremona the refer-ence point for violinmaking research anddevelopment, offering the best trainingand specialized learning opportunities inthe field. We must be present in all ofthe violinmaking hot spots around theworld, both with our institutions andwith the master violinmakers, who rep-resent the very best our production hasto offer. The quality of our work andthe unique characteristics of products

as you can see, are already active andhave contributed to this issue of ourjournal) for key roles within the organ-ization. In particular, Dr Virgina Villais our new Executive Director. In orderto strengthen our programmatic and sci-entific activities, numerous other part-nerships are either in progress or aboutto be finalized. The task at hand is farfrom easy: there is no doubt that, overthe past 10 years, major changes havetaken place in the world, sometimeswith sudden and unforeseen conse-quences that permeate even our dailylives. I am referring in particular to theglobalization of markets and to the in-ternationalization of decision-makingprocesses. Violinmaking, and in partic-ular violinmaking in Cremona, is notunaffected by these changes. It couldnot and it cannot, as some might havethought, remain closed in the ivorytower of its past, glorious as it may be,and live off of it. The challenge is now

before us, and we have to face it with allof our energies. In the coming years, the role of this organization must be tosupport and promote violinmaking, andto reaffirm the centrality of Cremonain this field. However, we cannot as-sume that this role will be handed to usby virtue of some sort of hereditary title, just because we are the descendents of

made in Cremona also need to be pro-tected and reaffirmed through initiativessuch as the Consorzio Stradivari andthe Cremonliuteria trademark, whichguaran tee the qualit y of our instru-ments. The role we envision for Cre-mona is thus not characterized by pro-tectionism, but by the support, stimulus, and promotion of the violinmaking in-dustry. Furthermore, we must not for-get the combination of violinmaking andmusic, as the two are complementaryand reinforce each other. As you know,of course, Cremona has severalstrengths in this field as well, and thereis no doubt that a close collaborationwith the organizations and institutionsthat focus on classical music is a keycomponent of our activity.Following are thus some key ideas thatcan be implemented over the next fewyears to move us forward: Reaffirm the centrality of the Con-corso Triennale Internazionale di Liu-

teria (Triennial International Violin-making Contest). We will have tostrengthen this event in order to preser-ve its status as the most important inthe world, possibly by diversifying it andby including a national competition foryoung violinmakers to create new sti-muli and growth opportunities. Continue and also strengthen the

pieces from the Instrument Collectionof the City Hall of Cremona, as am-bassadors of Italian culture to some ofthe most prestigious American homes, including the private residence of theItalian Ambassador in Washington, DCand the home of Gordon Getty in SanFrancisco. I hope that these experiences, combined with the solid tradition of thisimportant Cremonese institution, mightbe useful to further improve andstrengthen the activities in support of vi-olinmaking in the city that representsthe very best that the world has to of-fer in this field. The project for the nextthree years, which, starting with the500th anniversary of the birth of An-drea Amati, intends to explore the originof the violin from a historic and scientificpoint of view, the importa nce of thisgreat violinmaker and his dynasty, andbring to Cremona in 2007 a great ex-hibit on the complete work of Andrea

Amati, is part icularly interestin g andstimulating: I will devote all of my en-ergy and abilities to carrying out thistask in the best possible way. To allthose that we work with, both withinthe organization and externally, my bestwishes for successful work.

The King of Frances ViolinmakerT he exhibit Andrea Amati and theBirth of the Violin 1505-2005,on display at the Civic Museum fromOctober 1st to October 16th, aims to

show the state of the current knowledgeon the origins of contemporary violin-making, starting with the first and mostauthoritative master of the Cremoneseviolinmaking tradition. The exhibit willinclude some of Amatis masterpieces,as well as significant pieces from themost ancient history of violinmaking:documents, papers and images that canillustrate the evolutionary process of theviolin and related instruments by out-lining the cultural context in which thismodel took shape. On the one hand, the violin and similar instruments re-flect technical knowledge developed eversince the 1300s, after the introductionof the rebec from Asia. On the otherhand, it was the development of the lyrethat set the stage for the creation of the

new instrument, which most likely hap-pened in Lombardy in the early 1500s,in an area that was much larger thanthe current Lombard region. At its ori-gins, the vi olin had three strings (this

The use of scientific techniques inthe field of art restoration, as well

as in the more controversial one of at-tributions, has become more and morecommon. The systematic use of mod-ern technologies is becoming more pop-ular with respect to stringed instrumentsas well, as in the case of the use of den-drochronology for the dating of wood-crafts. The research project on theCharles IX will combine the t raditionalstylistic and construction methodologyanalysis with the contribution of scien-tific inquiry, thereby guaranteeing amore complete knowledge of the object. There are still many questions about theCharles IX.The uncertainties and the doubts aboutthe decorations lay in front of us: werethey painted in Cremona or at the courtof the king of France? Which connec-tions and continuity can we find withthe cremonese violinmakers of the 600and the 700, starting from Andreassons, Antonio and Girolamo, up toAntonio Stradivari? The use of u ltra-violet light will enable the identificationof integrations and the possible stratifi-cation of varnish touch-ups on the in-

Discovering the Charles IXstrument. The radiographic analysis willgive us information on the state of theconservation of the wood. The en-doscopy will allow us to explore thesoundbox: well be able to identify repa-rations, study the materials used for theconstruction, as well as identify the con-struction method that was used. Ascorecard will be developed to record allof the relevant measures, and the CATscan will enable us to study the volumesof the instrument.Special attention will be paid to thestudy of the decorations, which are stillpartly visible on the instrument, partic-ularly in connection with the hypothesesthat have been recently put forward. Inthe report Les violons de Charles IX,Karel Morens reaches this bold conclu-sion: Ces observations rendent peu

We will thus attempt to deepen ourknowledge of the Charles IX and to shedlight on its identity. This work will alsoprovide us with a touchstone that willenable us, through the study and com-parison of other

    Fausto Cacciatori

Along with the exhibit dedicated toAndrea Amati and the birth of the

violin, we suggest an itinerary throughthe citys churches to discover the old-est examples of the art of woodworkingand of inlay work and carving decora-tion. The path starts from the Cathe-dral, where one of the oldest Cremonesewoodcrafts is kept: the wooden choirwith perspective marquetry made byPlatina between 1483 and 1489. Theitinerary then leads to the St. Sigismon-do, St. Agostino, St. Pietro and St.Agata churches. In St. Sigismondo, thecarved door facing the cloister is partic-ularly notable. This work was com-missioned to Paolo Sacca in 1536 anddecorated with the ducal emblems. Al-so worthy of note are the presbyterydesk with inlays by Giuseppe Sacca and

the carved choir, made by GabrieleCapra in 1603 and still located alongthe walls of the presbytery. In St. Pietroone can visit the choir by Giuseppe Sac-ca, commissioned in 1554, while in St.Agostino we find another choir attrib-uted to Gabriele Capra, which is similarto the one in St. Girolamo and wasbuilt around the same time. The great

point is specifically addressed by the ex-hibit), and despite the fact that we canfind traces of it throughout the region, the main production center must have

been Brescia or its surroundings, as re-ported by local sources from the early1500s. However, the primacy of Bres-cia did not last long, as shortly after themiddle of the century a Cremonese ar-tisan, Andrea Amati, was alreadybuilding pieces with features that veryclosely resemble the ones that wouldcharacterize the violin family for cen-turies to follow. The exhibit will alsoseek to identify and reconstruct the sev-eral environmental factors that con-tributed to this historical and musicalevolution, including in particular therise of Italian music and its increasingpopular ity in Italia n and Europe ancities. The validity of this theory is ques-tioned by those who doubt the reliabilityof the Italian origin of the instrumentin general, and in particular, the au-thenticity of a group of instruments byAndrea Amati which, according to awell-established tradition, were com-missioned starting in 1556 by the

French monarch Charles IX. The pur-chase of these instruments, which aredecorated with the insignia of themonarch, will be investigated from a

historic and artistic perspective, and withan extensive documentation which seeksto recreate the environment and eventsof that time. With the aim of evaluatingthe aforementioned paternity, which weare trying to discuss and assess in com-plete impartiality, we have decided t osubject an instrument from this group, the Charles IX violin belonging to theCity of Cremona, to the most accuratescientific analysis available. Regardlessof the results that this research produces,we hope that it will provide new andimportant knowledge. If this researchyields significant results, the project willset the stage for a great retrospective ex-hibit that the Ente Triennale wants topropose for the year 2007, and whichseeks to bring to Cremona all of theknown instruments made by the onewho, until proof of the contrary, is con-sidered the true founder of the Cre-monese violinmaking school.

    Renato Meucci

particular, the day will open with a pres-entation on the history of Cremona dur-ing the Renaissance, followed by a seriesof discussions on the musical and artisticwork of that period, paying particularattention to the local production. Theafternoon session will focus on the in-depth exploration of three topics in vio-linmaking history. The first session willbe dedicated to the origin of the violin, which is still at the center of much re-search and debate. The topic will be ap-proached from an interdisciplinary per-spective: the first known iconographic, musical and historic accounts on thebirth of the violin will be presented andexamined, in order to reconstruct thecultural landscape in which the birth andearly development of the violin tookplace. Following, two presentations willaddress the history of violinmaking in

the 1500s in the two cities where it pri-marily occurred: Cremona and Brescia. The goal will be to present the paralleldevelopment of these two schools in orderto show their unique technical and his-torical characteristics. The day will con-clude with the presentation of AndreaAmatis Charles IX violin from theCity of Cremonas collection, and of the

results of the in depth scientific exami-nations this instrument underwent. Bothgoals of this research will be discussed:on the one hand the instrument will beexamined in light of the data compiledfrom the study. On the other hand, thepresentation will cover the research meth-ods elaborated for this project, which in-cludes the use of the most modern re-search techniques that can be applied tostringed instruments.

    Carlo Chiesa

This year, the Ente Triennale will or-ganize, as usual, a study day onOctober 15th. The topic will of coursebe in the field of violinmaking, specifi-cally linked to the first phase of the his-tory of the violin, which is the centraltheme of all of this years events. Unlikein the past, though, the scientific com-mittee overseeing the event has decided

not to limit the topic of the presentationsto musical instruments. Rather, theywish to widen the field to include a gen-eral presentation of the historic and cul-tural climate in which the first violin-makers (the Cremonese in particular)operated. The agenda will be divided in-to a morning and an afternoon segment. The morning segment will focus broad-ly on life in Cremona in the 1500s,while the afternoon sessions will focusmore specifically on violinmaking.

I taly is the country of Guelphs andGhibellines, Coppi and Bartali, Mu-ti and Abbado, Ughi and Accardo. And why not the country of An-drea Amati and Gasparo da Sal,Nicol Amati and Giovanni PaoloMaggini. This is the land of town loy-alty, where people are always ready todivide and root for two opposing parties whether in sports, arts, show businessor politics. This assumption is at the base of thefirst ever Violin Derby, an event that

seeks to highlight and display the tradi-tional violinmaking rivalry between Cre-mona and Brescia in the context of the2005 Salone Cremona Mondomusica.Andrea Amati and Gasparo da Sa lshared for decades the paternity of themodern violin. More generally, duringthe course of the sixteenth and seven-teenth centuries, prior to the ascendanceof the superior talent of Stradivari,Cremona, the City of the Torrazzo[The town bell tower], and Brescia, theLioness, competed for the leadershipin the field of violinmaking. The Violin Derby begins by emphasizingthe contraposition of these two factions,by having two competing specialists (onefrom each s ide) show the qualitie s ofeach school. The second, and morespectacular, phase will compare thebeauty and the sound of the main violinsof the two schools, played by a neutralvirtuoso who will be able to highlighttheir best qualities. The derby will be competitive, yet car-ried out in a playful and humorous way. This spirit will also characterize thecompetition among the Mayors of thetwo towns. Finally, the public will vote to elect thewinner, since Italians love to judge, theyall feel like experts, and want games t oend with the proclamation of a winner.A winner, needless to say, of t he firstedition of the Derby, considering thatthe competition is designed to be repli-

cated over the years, possibly with theformula changing to make it interestingevery time. The competition will take place on Sun-day, October 9th at 11 am, during thecourse of the Salone Mondomusica, atCremonaFiere. Fausto Cacciatori andFlavio Dassenno, specialists in classical

Carlo Chiesa will illus-trate the historical background of Cre-monese and Brescian violinmaking. Thetwo instruments will be entrusted to thevirtuous hands of world-famous violin-ist Sergej Krilov, who will play both in-struments and highlight their extraordi-nary sound qualities. The Mayors ofCremona and Brescia, Gian CarloCorada and Luigi Corsini, will then ad-dress the public, leading to the final vot-ing and announcement of the winningcity all in little over one hour.

Not just Violinmaking at theInternational convention

M ondomusica has become theworldwide point of reference forhigh end handmade instruments. Theevent showcases the best instrumentsand artisans in the world, who find inCremona an expert and competent au-dience, able both to appreciate the art

of crafting an instrument from a piece ofwood and to conduct sound business. This year marks the eighteenth edition ofMondomusica, but the push that wouldbring Cremona to the center of theworld market for handmade musical in-struments was provided four years ago,the first time that Mondomusica tookplace at the Cremona convention cen-ter. This move enabled Mondomusicato expand tremendously its exhibit ca-pacity, t o incr ease the number of ex-hibitors and visitors, and to achieve thestatus of International Convention. The 2004 convention featured 246 ex-hibitors, 5,000 visitors and 19 relatedevents including concerts, workshops, presentations and conferences. Due tothese numbers, Mondomusica is con-

sidered by experts in the field as thenumber one in the world, both in termsof quality of the exhibitors and of thecommercial networks that can be estab-lished.The fundamental characteristic exhib-ited by Mondomusica over the past fouryears is its great internationalization:last year, 38% of the exhibitors camefrom 20 differ ent countr ies and f ourcontinents, demonstrating how this

T he revival of the ancient perform-ing practice in Italy: 1965-2005.This is the title of the roundtable thatwill take place on Saturday, October8th at 10.30 am within the CremonaMondomusica convention. This con-ferenc e i s ba sed on the followi ng as-sumption: starting in 1965, when Nico-laus Harnoncourt recorded the Bran-denburg Concertos with the ConcertusMusicus Wien, the musical preferencesconcerning the performance of ancientmusic changed drastically. In that period the so called early mu-sic movement was born, in oftenstrong and vociferous opposition to thestandardization of the repertoire andperforming s tyle. This movement fa-vored a thoughtful and scientific atti-tude and an in-depth study prior to theperformance. St arting in the Eighties, this approach to music and the attemptto give it new form and new life goesbeyond the renaissance and baroquerepertoire to include classical and ro-mantic compositions as well: this iswhen studies conducted specifically onthe topic began to be published, schoolsspecializing in teaching a historicallyinformed performing practice opened, and violinmakers perfected copies of theancient instruments, differentiating theircharacteristics based on the historicalperiod. Philology and original instru -ments came to Italy with a slight delaycompared to other European countrieswhere the so called pioneers operat-ed. In our country, despite a strongtendency towards and significant inter-est in ancient music, there was still an

inferiority complex towards foreignschools (and particularly the British andthe Dutch) which often, and maybewith reason, considered us amateurish. Thanks to some important figures, overthe past 15 years Italians have been ableto achieve a prominent position on theEuropean musical scene, particularlywith respect to the Italian repertoirefrom the 1600 and 1700s. These mu-sicians include: Emilia Fadini, worldfamous harpsichordist and fortepianistwho taught for many years at theGiuseppe Verdi Conservatory in Mi-lan; Roberto Gini, founder of the bassviol professorship at the Civic School ofMusic in Milan, and one of the firstItalian pupils of Jordi Savall in Basle;Enrico Gatti, director of the AncientMusic Courses in Urbino, violinist andpupil of Chiara Banchini in Basle and ofSigiswald Kuijken at the Royal Conser-vatory in The Hague, where he cur-rently teaches; Andrea Damiani, lutist, pupil of Diana Poulton in London, luteteacher at the S. Cecilia Conservatoryin Rome; Lorenzo Girodo, flutist, di-rector of the ancient music courses inPamparato. The task of these musicians will be toshow how the early music movementarrived and developed in Italy, and whatdirection it is taking. In other words,to assess the current situation, illustrat-ing the recent discoveries and future de-velopments both in the organologic andin the performance practice fields, pay-ing continued attention to the world ofconcerts.

event is known and appreciated all overthe world. This year Mondomusica will grow evenmore, both in terms of expository spaceand of the products that will be show-cased. Indeed, the organization has al-ready received numerous reservations

and inquiries.Even more importantly, 20% of thereservations have come from new ex-hibitors: producers that visited Mondo-musica during the past editions and de-cided that this is an occasion they cannotmiss if they want to present their pro-duction to the professionals that habitu-

ally visits the stands of this Cremoneseconvention. The fact that the majorityof the new exhibitors come from abroadis the result of a precise marketing op-eration: the network of public relationsof CremonaFiere in other countries isconstantly at work to bring the very best
