Dry Creek Valley is a premium growing region located in the northern part of Sonoma County in California.

Just one hour north of San Francisco, this AVA (American Viticultural Area) has around seventy wineries, nearly all of which remain family-owned.

Winemaking in Dry Creek Valley stretches back 140 years and it is home to some of the oldest Zinfandel vines in the world. But, while it may be famous for these intense, concentrated Zins, its close proximity to the Russian River has given rise to the production of beautifully balanced Chardonnays and elegant Sauvignon Blancs.

► The grape made its way to California during 'The Gold Rush' in the 1850’s where it thrived in the State’s warm climate.

In the 1920’s, Giovanni Pedroncelli purchased a small plot of vines in California’s Dry Creek Valley. His first challenge upon arriving in American was surviving Prohibition which persisted until 1933.

He then set out to establish his winery as one of the leading estates in the US planting initially Zinfandel and later Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Thanks to this early work, the estate is now seen as one of the pioneers on the Northern Californian wine scene. The winery is currently run by Giovanni’s

grandchildren, the fourth generation of the Pedroncelli family to make wine in Dry Creek Valley.

PORT COUNTRY

► The Douro is made up of 3 regions: the Baixo Corgo, the Cima Corgo and the Douro Superior.

► The Baixo Corgo is the smallest of the three but has the greatest concentration of vineyards.

► The Douro is dominated by indigenous grape varieties - Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão for the reds and Rabigato, Viosinho and Malvasia Fina for the whites.

The Douro Valley is a place of extremes.Located up river from the city of Porto, it endures freezing cold winters and staggeringly hot summers with little rainfall.

The vineyards exist on slopes made of granite that are so steep they can reach up to 60 degrees. These conditions result in low-yielding vines that are capable of producing red grapes with very high tannins and natural grape sugars – the building blocks for great red wine and Port.

Since releasing its first Vintage Port in 1870, Cálem has gained a reputation for being one of the Douro’s most celebrated Port producers.

Located in Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank of the Douro River, Cálem has been at the forefront of Port production in the region for over a century.

Cálem’s beautifully restored winery is one of the most recognisable in the region and attracts around 150,000 visitors each year.

Founded in 1845, Bodegas Ochoa has gained a reputation for being one of Navarra’s most celebrated producers. Winemaker Adriana Ochoa is the sixth generation of her family to make wines in the region.

One of the oldest producers in Navarra, Bodegas Ochoa has also shown itself to be an innovator through the pioneering achievements of Javier Ochoa since the 1980’s. The father-daughter partnership continues to this day.

Bodegas Monte Pio is a family-run winery located in Ribadumia in Galicia. It was established in 1979 and since 2014 has been under the stewardship of Pablo Martinez, the current oenologist and vineyard manager. The average age of the vineyards is 25 years and they are predominantly made up of Albariño, the main grape of the Rias Baixas region.

An atypical Spanish wine region, Rias Baixas experiences higher rainfall and cooler temperatures than many other parts of the country which allows the fresh, crisp Albariño grape for which it has become famous to thrive.
