Boxing Scotland Individual Physical Combat Sport Guidance

Background

Individual Physical Contact Sportof its forms: Aikido, Cage Fighting, Judo, Ju-jitsu, Karate, Kendo, Kickboxing, K-1, Muay Thai, MMA, Sambo, Savate, Sumo, Taekwondo, Wrestling, Wushu and such other sports as may be deemed by AIBA to be an individual physical contact sport; Since 2011, BSL has been beset with occurrences of Novice Championship entrants not disclosing previous individual physical combat experience. This resulted in an entrant being removed from the competition despite having competed and won a bout. Whenever such records have been uncovered, we have adopted a zero-tolerance approach to boxers entering our Novice (and potentially intermediate) championships who possess more than six competitive bouts in individual physical combat sports as previously defined. The primary concern in such instances has always the health, safety and welfare of the boxers who are novice athletes who have no undeclared sporting experience from other individual physical combat sports. We do this to minimise the risks to the boxers competing in our events. AIBA no longer requires federations to contact it to register athletes transferring over from other individual physical combat sports. BSL has previously registered such athletes with the caveat they declare all previous individual physical combat sport experience on their initial SME1 medical examination form. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. In the build-up and during the 2016 BSL Novice Championships, a total of 5 boxers were removed for not fully disclosing their previous individual combat sport experience. We wish to provide equal opportunities to all registered boxers irrespective of their levels of ability. However, there have been an increasing amount of instances of boxers not fully declaring other individual physical combat sport experience. It is hoped that the following recommendations will assist in alleviating this situation and make things fairer for all boxers wishing to compete within the BSL competitive structure. 1 The boxer with previous individual physical combat sport experience must:

• Demonstrate acceptance of the additional membership conditions in writing, by receiving, signing and returning

the provided form to BSL.

• Formally declare their previous combat experience on the provided form, before clearance for membership can

be sought;

• Have the Secretary or Coach of the club the athlete intends to join must also sign the declaration;

Once the signed form is received and deemed satisfactory by BSL the club secretary will be contact to inform the boxer/coach to proceed with the initial SME1 medical examination; The completed SME1 medical examination must then be forwarded to the BSL office for processing in the normal manner.

subject to the information provided being checked and verified.

Following your request to participate in boxing after having been involved in the above physical contact sport, please note the following conditions under which your membership will be accepted, if approved by Boxing Scotland Ltd. The conditions are as follows;-

You must cease your involvement in the above sport; • You must not participate in any other Individual Physical Contact Sport during your membership with BSL; • You must abide by all BSL rules and guidelines, which include (but not exclusively) the Code of Conduct for BSL members and all AIBA rules as provided on its website (www.aiba.org); • If you do not maintain a continuous annual registration with BSL you must reapply following any break in membership using this process. In such circumstances, all conditions will re-apply, including the requirement to serve another probation period before competing in BSL National Competitions; • BSL must approve the request in writing before an athlete can be approved as a member of Boxing Scotland; • BSL reserves the right to remove any boxer from any tournament, at any stage, should it be proven previous individual physical combat sport experience has not been fully disclosed; • BSL will apply a specifically developed scoring matrix in accordance to your individual physical combat sport performance history and add details to your SME2 accordingly.

Boxer I have read and understood the above information in relation to my application to become a member of Boxing Scotland Ltd. I confirm that the information I have supplied above is accurate and that I will accept and abide by the relevant conditions, should my application for membership be approved.

3 Other individual combat sport conversion matrix

In the past, a one size fits all approach was taken when any athlete previously involved in individual physical combat sports registered with BSL. They had all their bouts marked on their BSL registration book, irrespective of the sport they had competed in.

We now have athletes from many different individual physical combat sports registering with BSL, some of which do not

a fairer assessment of previous individual physical combat sport experience and allocate a more realistic bout record in SME2 registration books.

Combat Sport Conversion (other combat sport contest = BSL Boxing contest)

White Collar Boxing/Unlicensed Boxing

1 contest = 1 contest

Muay Thai 1 contest = 0.75 contest

Kick Boxing (Full Contact) 1 contest = 0.75 contest

MMA 1 contest = 0.75 contest

Karate (Full Contact) 1 contest = 0.75 contest

Kick Boxing (Semi Contact) 1 contest = 0.5 contest

Karate (Semi Contact) 1 contest = 0.5 contest

Karate (Light / Points) 1 contest = 0.25 contest

Taekwondo 1 contest = 0.25 contest

Judo 1-10 = 1, 11-20 = 2, 21-30 = 3, 31-40 = 4, 41-50 = 5, 50+ = 6, 100+ = 7, 150+ = 8, 200+ = 9 bouts and so on.

Wrestling 1-10 = 1, 11-20 = 2, 21-30 = 3, 31-40 = 4, 41-50 = 5, 50+ = 6 100+ = 7, 150+ = 8, 200+ = 9 bouts and so on.
