CARRINGTON AUDITORIUM MISSOURI STATE UNIVERSITY Worked under Andrew Wells, FAIA, and Mark Wheeler, AIA to transform a historic auditorium space into a classroom which holds 370 students. The suspended ‘cube’ changes the volume of the space to a classroom height while allowing the original architecture to remain untouched. The ‘cube’, clad in acoustic panels, holds lights and mechanical systems. The light cuts in the cube highlight and connect the original features of the auditorium and entry points of the space. I modeled the existing space and renovatino design in ArchiCAD 14, and produced all construction documents overseen by Mark Wheeler, AIA.

K9 doghouseHabitat for HuManity

Habitat for Humanity’s “Toolbelts and Bowties” holds and annual fundraiser auction, featuring original doghouses designed and built by local architects and contractors. Working with Andrew Wells, FAIA, we came up with a simple solution for the indoor small dog who needs a place to get away from it all. K9 was inspired by E. Fay Jones, Robert Venturi, Donald Judd, and Louis Kahn, and a nod to the tradional doghouse. Composed of 9 K’s using scrap pieces of Corten, the simple design solution can be used as a side table, magazine rack, and doghouse.

CheeK hall - 3rd floorMissouri state university

Worked under Andrew Wells, FAIA, and Mark Wheeler, AIA, to design and renovate the third floor of Cheek Hall on Missouri State University’s campus. The solution opened up two underused offices into a student lounge to allow a designated place for collaboration. I produced all construction documents in ArchiCAD 14.

This project won a 2012 AIA Springfield Professional Jury Merit Award.

newburg sChoolsnewburg r-ii scHool district

Newburg School District came to us looking for a solution to a multitude of issues at their main public entrance and cafeteria. Using simple forms and design solutions, Newburg will have a completely renovated kitchen and cafeteria, with a small addition housing new ADA restrooms and a concession stand. Working under Brandon Dake, AIA, Matt Thornton, AIA, and Andrew Wells, FAIA, I was responsible for producing schematic and design development graphics (using hand drawings, CS4 and SketchUp), as well as 3D modeling and producing all construction documents in ArchiCAD 15.

snorKel houseurban districts alliance

The Snorkel House was the result of a local competition, Project CoRE, to design an affordable house for a low-income family. Taking the traditional pitch roof of the surrounding vernacular architecture, we emphasized the shape. The defining piece, the Snorkel, contributes to the natural ventilation system by drawing hot air up and out of the tall space of the main living area. I was responsible for developing the floor plan, modeling the house in SketchUp, rendering perspectives and elevations, and composing the boards for submission. Submitted through Dake Wells Architecture, we received a Certificate of Merit.

I was responsible for the site research, design development, floor plan layout, SketchUp model, all renderings, and board layouts. All work was overseen by Brandon Dake, AIA, and Andrew Wells, FAIA.

environment and history Centerleading edge coMpetition 2008

Leading Edge allows students and instructors to explore the use of new building materials and strategies and the aesthetics and technology of high-performance architecture in a practical, real-world setting. Students designed an Environment and History Center serving dual roles of research and education about the environment and history of the local area, including reuse of an existing historic barn on the property.

The Leading Edge Competition entry was submitted with two other 5th year Drury University students: Carly Rickerson and Lannette Guerra. I was personally responsible for overseeing the overall design, board layouts, diagrams, energy calculations, and facade renderings.

A series of abstract site diagrams explored special and angular relationships of the site context at different scales. The rowing diagram revealed an energetic pattern, which is similar to my site diagrams in their angularity. The project’s geometry speaks literally to this analysis while recalling the fluid nature of both the sport and the river.

The building slopes below grade to provide a connection to the water and workout areas that is protective and introspective. To the south, the roof rises dramatically over a multipurpose room revealing views to the downtown skyline. A tapered concrete structure cantilevered from the central cast-in-place core suspends a grass roof.

Work displayed here was completed by me under the advisory of a Design Studio professor at Drury University.

Nominated for the Librarium Award, awarding the best studio project.
