CHAPTER 1 - Visit to Grandfathers village

Aman was a little boy who lived with his mother, father and little sister Khushi in a small

town. One day, he went to his grand-parents home in a far off village along with his sister,

mother Vidya and friend Anand.

On their arrival in the village, Amans grandparents came out happily to welcome them.

His grandfather excitedly said, Welcome, Welcome, my children!

Aman, Khushi touched their grandparents feetand said, Greetings Grandma! How areyou?

Grandmother hugged the children and said, May God bless you. I was waiting for you from

such a long time. Come inside my children. I have made your favourite laddus.

They ate their dinner and went to sleep as they were too tired.

Next morning, Aman and his friend Anand were having milk and bread while sitting on the

steps of the verandah. A crow flew in and snatched Amans bread.

Aman said, It looks like this crow was also hungry and laughed.

Aman saw a cow tied by a rope to a pole, drinking water in a large tub. Aman and Anand fed

grass to the cow.

A dog came near the cow and barked at the cow.

But the cow showed its horn to the dog and the dog stepped back. Seeing this show, Aman

and Anand again laughed loudly.

CHAPTER 2 - Trouble in the game

In the evening, Aman, Anand and Khushi were playing hide and seek near the river bank.

Aman hid himself behind the tree, which was of the same colour as his dress - so no one was

able to find him.

Aman thought proudly, No one can find meI always win.

Soon, the clouds became darker. The children could hear a peacock calling.

Aman was hiding inside a boat kept near the river bank. Anand was also hiding near-by.Aman was happy and kept peeping from the boat to see others.

He also saw a crow flying above him holding a dead mouse in its beak. Aman got amused to

see it.

Aman was so engrossed in the game that he did not notice that the knot which tied the boat to

a pole on the bank was slowly opening and boat was about to go unmanned with the rivers

flow.

Few seconds later, the boat automatically started moving in the river. Aman started to panic.

He cried in a scared voice, Help, Help!

Seeing Aman in trouble Anand rushed and shouted, I am coming!

Anand jumped into the river and climbed up into the boat.

The boat got carried away by the strong current. Meanwhile Anand found the oars inside the

boat. He started to row the boat. Soon, water current became lesser which made Aman and

Anand little calm.

Under the water they saw many fish. Aman saw a big rock emerging in between the river. He

imagined it as a crocodile, got scared and shouted, Its crocodile!

Anand pacified him, Calm down, it is just a rock!

The children saw a frog coming out of water and sitting on the big stone. It ate an insect

taking out its long tongue.

After some time, they reached near a bank.

CHAPTER 3 - At the other side of river

Anand stopped at the other bank leading to the jungle. They left the boat on the shore.

Anand wondered, Where are we?Aman had no clue and said, I dont know.

In the sky they could see eagles flying. They start walking in the jungle on a trail with many

trees on the sides.

They could see monkeys jumping on the trees and also one monkey removing lice from other

monkeyshead.

Aman was amused and said, Look, it is removing lice. They bothsmiled meekly together.

Anand was hungry. He suggested, I am hungry. Can we eat the fruits on this tree, as

monkeys must be eating too?

They both plucked some fruits from the trees and ate them. They continued to walk on some

kutcha path.

All of a sudden, they heard a tiger roar from a far distance. They both got very scared.

Aman was frightened to death and whispered, Oh my God! Run, Run, Run.

Both started running. Anand stumbled on a big stone, and got hurt.

After few minutes, they heard a loud bear noise from a near distance.

Aman panicked and cried, Anand, run fast!! There is a bear nearby. Run.

Seeing Anand unable to run faster, Aman came back and picked him up. They both started

running.

Soon they reached a dark cave with a big stone blocking the entrance.

CHAPTER 4 - Inside the cave

Aman and Anand rushed inside the cave which was pretty dark and they hid behind a big

rock at a distance.

The bear came till the cave and tried to find them by looking here and there. He also made

some sound to scare them and waited outside the cave for the children.

Aman and Anand realized that the bear couldnt come in due to thebig rock at the entrance of

the cave. They were relieved and started to walk inside the cave. They both went further and

further inside the cave.

Aman was very frightened and praying to God, he murmured, Godsave us. This bear is

going to eat us if it comes inside.

Anand, though in pain, started consoling him, Dont worry! We are together.We will find

our way back home.

Aman cried, I am thirsty.

Anand heard water gurgling in the cave and said, I can hear water near-by.Aman and Anand walked a little distance and saw a small stream of water in the cave.

They happily drank it.

Aman said happily, I feel so good now.

While drinking water, when Anand touched the ground, he felt a stick. He looked around

more and he found a stick and a match box lying near-by.

Anand was pleased at his finding and said, It seems like some people might have come here

and left this.

Aman looked at what Anand had found and said, I have got an idea.

Aman tied cloth to the stick and lighted it with match boxand soon a small mashaal (torch)was ready.

Anand was thrilled to see this and said, Let us go and teach this bear a lesson.

Aman and Anand started to walk back to the cave entrance.

The bear was still waiting for them. Suddenly, Aman and Anand came out and showed the

mashaal (torch) to the bear.

The bear got scared and ran away.

CHAPTER 5 - Journey back home

Luckily, they saw a boatman about to go back.

Anand cried, Hey thats our fisherman Santosh.The boatman looked at the children and shouted, Kids, I was looking for you only! Your

parents are worried. Where were you? It is too dark. Lets go back home now.

Aman heaved a sigh of relief and said, Good, he found us in time. God is great.

Soon they reached home.

Vidya, grandparents were waiting anxiously for the kids.They saw kids coming back and were very happy.

Vidya rushed to the children and said, How are you? We were so worried. Did you eat

something?

The two children hid themselves in Vidyas arms. They were so happy to be back to home

after such a jungle adventure.

Moral of the story: A friend in good and bad time is a true friend

CHAPTER 6 - Food for thought

1. What could Aman and Anand have done if they werent able to create fire?2. Can you tell what Aman could have done if a tiger was chasing them instead of bear?

3. What helped Aman and Anand to survive the jungle - the bond between them or use of

common sense?

4. What they might have done to get back home if Santosh hadnt found them?

5. Would the cow in the story be able to live in a jungle like the deer?

6. Herbivores are prey to carnivores like the tiger was eating the deer. Then how do the

herbivores protect themselves?
