Vice –President’s Report By John Fischer

Well here it is almost the end of July and the summer is already half over. I hope all of you are able to get some time in on the sticks. Where has the summer gone? Many thanks to those of you who helped make the aero show a success. It was a lot of work but I know it was well worth it. I don’t know about you but I had a great time and enjoyed meeting all the pilots that were able to make the three day event. It was very cool meeting all the guys from Hori-zon and kudos to Jeff, our President, and Dominic for getting them to come and help to make our show a success. John Redman once again was the star of the show but had a lot of help his bud-dies at Horizon. Lets also give it up for our President Jeff, not many of us would allow our $12,000 jet get into the hands of another pilot, much less two of them, much less at the same time going 200mph plus across center stage in opposite directions on knife edge! What was he thinking? I don’t know but I sure enjoyed it. I am sure you did as well. I also very much enjoyed the night time helicopter flying, and the fireworks were nothing short of amazing. I must say they were worth every penny. I am also attaching two pictures of my Stinson, with all the wind on Saturday I didn’t get it into the air until later in the day. Many thanks to John Redman for flying it as only he can, check out that greased landing. Until next month. Happy flying and safe landings to everyone.

Secretary’s Report By Julian Pugh

Minutes of the July 12, 2007 Meeting

President Jeff Anderson called the meeting to order at 7:30 P.M at FVAC Flying Field. Julian Pugh requested the minutes be approved at published in the last Flypaper. A motion was made and the vote was unanimous for approval by the members present. Jeff review all details of the upcoming three day Fox Valley Air Show Event to be held July 13-14-15, making all members aware of the work roles to be filled for the event. Jeff reported on a trip he and Dominic made to Horizon Hobbies. They toured the factory and took the key Horizon People to lunch. Horizon People assured Jeff and Dominic that they would send sev-eral key members, including John Redman, to our weekend event to assist and put on flying demon-strations. This was a great promotion for our club since Horizon Hobbies is the largest supplier of R/C Aircraft in the nation with sales of approximately $330 million/year. Jeff passed around some thank you cards sent by kids who participated in the Kids Fund Fly, thank-ing the club for providing them the opportunity to fly. John Fischer was awarded the Crash Award for the crash of his beautiful Cessna 310 that crashed when one engine failed in flight. Show and Tell Items were presented by the following members: John Fisher Combat Cliff Fullhart Stinger Tom Siwek Twist 40 Tom Spriet Funtana X-100 Bill/Phil Shearer Helicopter John Turner J2 Cub Electric President Anderson adjourned the meeting at 8:35 P.M. Treasurers Report By Bill Simmons

It looks like this years’ was another successful event. The crowd of participants was close to the levels I remember seeing years ago during the Festival of Giants. Everyone seemed to respect each others facet of the hobby; Scale, Helicopter, Jet, Sport, or 3D. Very few fights took place and we kept it out of the international media, a first for us. The crowd loved all of it. They stayed all day Saturday, despite the bad weather, and all day Sunday, another first for us. Several important things went well that made this event come together. First and foremost we had great publicity. It was critical that the news-papers were informed so that the crowds would come. That happened and they came. My thanks go out to Jeff Anderson and Bill Sponsler for caring that end of the saw. The next big thing happens every year and I can't express my gratitude enough for this. That is that the Saverino family came out in force yet again to runs the concessions. I don't know where FVAC would be without them. Cindy McFarlane personally went around to every participant at the event and got additional donations to cover the cost of the fire-works. She put together a raffle that doubled our investment in prizes. As I have said a lot of times before, please support all of our supporting hobby shops. They support us. During these events I usually spend the better part of one of the days at the front gate. We have terrible trouble getting members to volunteer for that duty. It is the one place where you can not actually see the event. We do appreciate it when John Redman flies someone's (usually one of Jeff's) jet low and fast out over our heads. If it weren't for that we probably would miss the whole day. Anyways Dominic was able to get a trusted em-ployee to man the gate so that another could enjoy the event. We should consider doing that again next year. I personally benefited from this great idea. I took several pictures during that weekend however none of them came out. Camera phones are just not that reliable. Besides I'm sure Paul will have plenty of pictures in this issue without mine. We have a new porta potty thanks to a member of the Sandwich club and one of our members, Steve Baker. If your company has need for one of these highly technical ma-chines during a company event I can highly recommend this company. In summary, could we have done better? Of coarse we could of. That can be said about every event we have ever done. We always will be able to do that because making money is not always the main goal. The main goal of this event was to say thank you to our sup-porters and more importantly to have fun. Sometimes you have to do fun things instead of profitable things. The goal is to have both the participants as well as the audience want to come back the next year. We accomplished that goal better than ever before. Bill

The Flypaper

Instead of adding and editing photographs for the Flypaper, Jeff wanted all photos posted on the website in our event gallery. You can view 75 photos of our Big Air Show at: http://www.foxval leyaero .com/event_gal lery /Album6.htm . More to come.

A few friendly comments on field etiquette: 1. Greg Bohler is our Field Maintenance Chairman not our garbage man. If you see

some garbage on the ground, please pick it up and put it in the container. If the container is full, please empty it in the dumpster.

2. Cigar and cigarette butts should be put in the proper container and not put out and left on the concrete or grass.

3. Dogs are welcome at the field but they must be kept on a lease for their own safety and you need to clean up after them.

4. There are 208 members and 8 tables that are to be used for assembling and repair to your aircraft. Use them and move on so others have a chance to do the same.

5. Watch your language. There are many guests at the field including women and children and profanity is not allowed.

6. If you drink alcohol, you do not fly. Just like full scale aviation, it’s 8 hours from bottle to throttle...no exceptions.

It’s nice to be important but it is more important to be nice.

Left: Boeing’s new 787 Dreamliner is an all composite design that will revolutionize the airline industry. Are you ready to fly in a plastic airframe that is stronger than steel?

Field Maintenance Report By Greg Bohler, Chairman

We had a field work day on July 7th to clean up and prepare the field for our upcom-ing air show. We had 27 members show up. The guys did a great job with every task we had on the list. We accomplished everything that we wanted to get done and then some. I would like to thank everyone for their hard work. Once again you all have shown why we have the greatest club to be a part of. On a side note, we learned a few things. Jeff Anderson may be a great and safe pilot, but (notice the but Jeff) he could have a part in "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" once he gets his hands on a chain saw. Also we had one wrestling match. The score, Bees 2 and JT 0. Thankfully, JT is al-right and when I last looked, the bees were still happy also. Thanks to everyone again for another job well done. We have successfully hosted another exceptional air show. I am sure a lot of people will have a lot to say about it. There were a couple note worthy crashes, but I will let other people talk about those. During our event, I spent a lot of time at the field. I noticed a few things that don't of-ten get mentioned. I have been told that it is usually not a good idea to mention indi-viduals after a group event because you may leave someone out and hurt feelings. I want to take that chance anyway. I noticed during a lot of the weekend, Dave Bustles and Mark Knoppkie working in one area and immediately moving to another as needed. They went almost non-stop. At one point I came through on a garbage run and met Bill Brown half way. He almost beat me to the punch. You are used to hear-ing Cindy's name in connection with Al's Hobbies and their unending generosity to the club. Cindy was seen selling raffle tickets, and she also helped haul her share of gar-bage. Dom and his family, once again did a fantastic job with the food. I know he had club members help, but he will have to name them. Karl and his guys kept parking under control with no problems. The gate was manned by several different people. Bill Simmons worked the gate and raffles. Paul Douds, Were you a taxi driver in an-other life? Thank for the use of your trailer and your golf cart. There were a lot of people that worked hard to make the show a success. All of your efforts are appreci-ated. The only reason that I named the people that I did, is because they put in an in-credible amount of hours and effort over and above what was expected. There is one name I left out, Jeff Anderson. Jeff lived the show for way more than just one week-end. Thanks Jeff. This air show was the best we have ever had with the least amount of challenges. On the following Monday morning, because of everyone's help, the field was already back to normal. Thanks to every one who helped. Greg

City Relations By Dominic Saverino, Chairman

Congratulations FVAC we did it! Our biggest event of the year and the biggest Sunday in the history of all events. You are the only reason for that. For in the past when our guest went home on Sunday you stayed and flew. The food tent was steady and after Saturday night we had broke even for all that was bought and what was taken in. Sunday was the day and I know we did well and I am waiting for Bill to give the final count for the event. I was happy to see some new faces helping me under the food tent it was a good feeling to have people wanting to help. On another note our new neighbor was very impressed with us that we pulled the huge project off of cutting all those trees down for them. I do believe that in the long run it is going to pay off for the club. R e m e m b e r people want to help people that are NICE. It is hard to be nice but the re-ward is greater in the long haul. Membership News By Jason Walsh

Please welcome the following new members when you see them: Joseph Wagner Pat Yauch Bob Tucker Eric Reiner Matt DiPietro Welcome to you all. I’ve revised our membership count to those all paid up for the year and we are at 208, including those above. That’s a great number. Lastly, I have had a _____(insert adjective of your choice)________ time as your membership chairman, but the time has come to hand over the reigns to someone else. I will be retiring from the position as of 1/1/08 and am actively looking for a replacement. It’s not a hard job, it just requires a little time and some knowledge of Microsoft Excel. I will give you all the contacts you will need to get membership badges, cards, and stickers. We prefer to have someone in the position be an active flyer so as to be at the field often. Also, this position carries with it a board seat. Please let me know if you are interested in helping the club out in this position and shoot me an email or a phone call to discuss. That’s it for now, see you soon. Jason Walsh

Safety Corner By Karl Griesbaum

630-584-7616 www.robart.com

Just a short reminder this month that only members are allowed in the pits and on the flight line. All guests should remain behind the fences unless accompanied by a member who takes responsibility for their safety. We will also need to enforce the full scale air-port restriction that prohibits any maneuver towards or over the pits. All high “G” turns should be at the ends of the runway and never towards the bleachers. I have seen several take-offs during the last month where the aircraft has passed over the safety fence. Think before you start the take-off roll which way you need to add rudder to take you away from the fence. Ask any in-structor for help if you are unsure. Karl

Training has picked up this month due in part to interest created by the air show. Several prospective new mem-bers have come to me and asked about membership and flying so I gave them some lessons on the club trainer and told them how to become members. All in all everyone had a great time learning about our sport and was excited to be able to fly almost immediately. I think the hook is set for a few of them. Kyle (Pete Rosch's son) was one of the new trainees and it appears that Pete is going to upgrade his membership to the family status. Carl Dinwitte has purchased the Hangar-9 P51 trainer from Al's Hobbies and received help from Karl Griesbaum in getting it pre-flighted. Carl and I were able to get in 3 flights last Sunday. We should see Carl at our next meeting. Patricia (Pat) Yauch has had several lessons as well and is flying the pattern nice and smoothly. Great job Pat.

In the FYI area-for those of you who are buying and using the Hitec servos: If you had Futaba servos and changed over to the Hitec you should switch to the Hitec control horns as well. It will appear as if Futaba horns are okay when in fact the splines are slightly different. They will appear to work but, when put under load, may skip a tooth and cause trouble, especially if used for the elevator. Can you picture pulling up for a loop and the splines skip one or more teeth and now when you release the stick to neutral, the plane dives to the ground. What about an aileron roll? Hmmm...maybe this could explain some of those, "I don't know what happened it just seemed as if I had no control" situations.
