What is PAC? Positive Approach to Care (PAC) emphasizes the value of connection when primary verbal communication and interaction abilities are altered. Founded by Teepa Snow in 2005 to offer dementia care education to family and professional care partners all over the world, Positive Approach, LLC reflects Teepa’s personal mission to help families and professionals better understand how it feels to live with the challenges and changes that accompany various forms of dementia. The result? Life lived fully and well at each stage.

What’s different about it?Rather than focusing on a person’s loss when there is brain change, Teepa teaches how to see individuals as precious, unique, and capable — and how to encourage a caring partnership and supportive setting that allows everyone, including care providers, to use what they have to be their best.

Most education models teach the WHAT of dementia care, including mostly facts and information. PAC takes it a step further and teaches the HOW to live in relationship with a changing brain. Teepa Snow’s relational approach and hands-on skill techniques offer the interpersonal skills needed to improve quality of life for everyone involved.

What will I learn?Recognizing the dynamic nature of the human brain and its abilities, Teepa Snow’s GEMS® model equates each stage of dementia with a specific gemstone. Acknowledging that everyone’s abilities can change in a moment, the GEMS model will help you learn how to modify environments, situations, interactions, and expectations to create supportive positive opportunities for care and interaction. And, just as gemstones need different settings and care to show their best characteristics, so do people.

The GEMS model offers a way for everyone living with brain change to have the opportunity to shine.

Why attend all these sessions? This series of presentations of Teepa’s PAC, funded by a special bequest, brings Teepa’s unique approach to dementia care training and education to the Fort Worth community, with First United Methodist Church at its center. This layered series of presentations will include:• Basic information related to dementia: what

it is, what it is not, and what happens when someone is living with it

• More in-depth knowledge and exposure to a variety of skills, expectations, and environmental support modifications

• Experiential training with feedback to help create new habits and practices in care partnering

• How to respond to a person’s change in cognition and abilities in a way that is not hurtful or offensive

• GEMS to help match the functional ability of the person living with dementia with supportive responses

Armed with this new understanding, you’ll be fully ready to take advantage of Teepa’s live presentation on September 7, 2018.

Where can I learn more?In addition to this layered learning series, Teepa training is available through video, online education and information at teepasnow.com, and in-person training and consulting. Contact the FUMCFW Library for access to Teepa’s 14 DVDs, newsletter, and available support materials.
