Library and information service

Alzheimer’s Australia ACT library provides access to quality dementia related information. This information is applicable to people living with dementia, their carers, friends and family. Information is also useful for health professionals, other services providers and members of the general public.

Resources contained in our library include books, journals and magazines, DVDs and CD’s. Topics covered in the library collection are behaviour, residential care, dementia design, activities, reminiscing, carer stories and books for children.

Anyone is welcome to visit and use the facilities of the library. However, you need to be a member to borrow from the library collection. Library opening hours are 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Internet service

Alzheimer’s Australia ACT has computer and internet access available to people living with dementia, their carers, friends and family. The purpose of this equipment is to make the many internet based dementia resources available to everyone.

Staff are available to provide some assistance with the use of the computers and internet. Internet access is available 9.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday.

Capacity Building Course

Suitable for: Professional staff caring for people living with dementia.

The Montessori Method emphasises the importance of keeping the person living with dementia as independent as possible for as long as possible. Independence is kept through different activities: sensory, social and cognitive, and activities of daily living.

This workshop offers an overview of the Montessori Method and activities for dementia care, demonstrating the creation and presentation of meaningful activities.

This program has been developed by Alzheimer’s Australia in conjunction with leading Montessori experts. The skills and strategies explored in this workshop can be applied to all care settings including home, community and residential settings.

Steve MiltonSteve Milton is a director of Innovations in Dementia in the UK and is responsible for the dementia training service.He has worked in social care since 1987 as a researcher, writer, trainer, and service manager. He has been working in the dementia field since 1995. He provides dementia care training to the statutory, voluntary and independent sectors and has a strong track record in dementia care training.In 1996 he set up the Alzheimer’s Society helpline, which he ran until 2002.

Dr Alex Bahar-FuchsBA, PostGrad Dip (Psych), PhD (Clinical Neuropsychology)

Alex Bahar-Fuchs is a postdoctoral research fellow and a clinical neuropsychologist with a strong interest in healthy and pathological cognitive ageing. Research interests to date have broadly focused on two areas: The early detection of age-related cognitive decline - and the development of interventions for the primary and secondary prevention of dementia - including health promotion interventions to minimise dementia risk factors for primary prevention, and cognition-focused interventions for secondary prevention. He is very interested in patient variables that predict response to interventions - particularly the contribution of emotional and motivational factors.

Dr Chris HatherlyChris Hatherly is National Research Manager with Alzheimer’s Australia, where he oversees a $2.5 million research funding program for students and early career researchers, relationships with universities, medical research institutes and other funding bodies, research communications and advocacy, and an innovative $5 million knowledge translation program directed by people with dementia and their carers. Chris studied psychology at the ANU completing a PhD in cognitive psychology. Chris sits on advisory and steering committees for over 20 dementia research projects and programs, including a $25 million NHMRC Partnership Centre, he is an adjunct fellow at the ANU, and was previously Director of the Australian Association of Gerontology. He has also made a successful travel documentary and co-authored a travel book that has been published internationally.

Dr Ken BakerDr Ken Baker is the Chief Executive of National Disability Services (NDS), the peak association for non-government disability service organisations. In that role he provides information, representation and policy advice.Dr Baker has worked in social policy and public affairs for more than 25 years. Based in Canberra, he is currently a member of the National People with Disabilities and Carer Council, the Not-for-Profit Sector Reform Council, the National Disability Strategy Implementation Reference Group and committees advising on disability employment and income support. Dr Baker lives in Canberra with his wife, who has severe aphasia and limited mobiity and their two children.


Dr Michael BauerMichael Bauer is a senior research fellow at the Australian Centre for Evidence Based Aged Care, a research centre of the Australian Institute for Primary Care and Ageing at La Trobe University, where his work is aimed at improving the care of older people by advancing service delivery through research. He has published widely and been invited to speak internationally on sexuality and aged care, a topic which is still on the margins of the policy and training landscape for many aged care service providers.

Professor Brian DraperBrian Draper is a Conjoint Professor in the School of Psychiatry at the University of New South Wales. He has been the Assistant Director of the Academic Department for Old Age Psychiatry at Prince of Wales and Prince Henry Hospitals, Sydney since 1992. He is Chair of the Australian Government’s Psychogeriatric Care Expert Reference Group and Past Chair of the Faculty of Psychiatry of Old Age, RANZCP. He is Deputy Director of the Dementia Collaborative Research Centre – Assessment and Better Care based at UNSW and an Honorary Senior Research Fellow at Neurosciences Research Australia. Dr Draper is the Chair of the International Psychogeriatric Association (IPA) BPSD Taskforce and a Board Member of IPA. Dr Draper has been published widely including a book for the general public titled ‘Dealing with Dementia’ (2004), revised as ‘Understanding Alzheimer’s and Other Dementias’ (2011)

Rachel LitherlandRachael Litherland has worked with people with dementia for the past 12 years. With a background in psychology and advocacy, she developed and managed the national “Living with Dementia” programme for the Alzheimer’s Society (2000-2006). This included providing leadership on issues relating to the involvement and support of people with dementia and supporting people with dementia in service and information development, campaigning and self-advocacy.

Rachael is now a director with Innovations in Dementia CIC, a national community interest company. Innovations in Dementia works on range of positive projects with people with dementia including Shared Lives, circles of support, work on dementia friendly communities, projects on assistive project and the Dementia Engagement and Empowerment project (DEEP). The work of the organisation is centred on the voices and experiences of people with dementia.

Karen CmielManager, Education Services, Alzheimer’s Australia ACT. Karen has tertiary qualifications in Leisure and Health, Community Services Management and Training and Assessment. She has worked as a therapist in the aged, community and disabilities sectors for 18 years. Karen has taught at Certificate II, III, IV and Diploma level. Karen has been teaching in Diversional Therapy and dementia related topics for over 12 years.

Jill BrownCommunity Educator, Alzheimer’s Australia ACT. Jill has tertiary qualifications in Public Policy, Political Science, Psychology and Philosophy and has worked in the disability, mental health and aged care sectors for over 14 years. Jill has been teaching dementia related topics with Alzheimer’s Australia for over 5 years.

Elizabeth LoreCommunity Educator, Alzheimer’s Australia ACT. Elizabeth has tertiary qualifications in Diversional Therapy and Community Management. She has worked in the aged care and community sector for over 30 years. For a number of these years she worked as a Diversional Therapist.
