SVA Newsletter - Summer 2005

Already there are 5 over Mere Wayand 4 over the south-east end ofChantry Way East. The biggestworry though is again the lack ofswallows. That is a topic I’ll bereturning to regularly.

On the mammal front I’ve got awood mouse (that’s the type ofmouse with long ears and beadyeyes). It’s a first for me after allthese years of living in Swanland!

We never even had them when Ilived on our farm on West End.They are locally endangered so it’sall the more special to have one.I’ve even persuaded it to comewithin a yard of me by putting anapple quarter and some small seedsout on my patio!

Last week I had a visiting hedgehogas there was a fresh dropping on myback lawn. Did you know they canrange up to 3 miles a night in searchof food? If I see another dropping I

will put out a small dish of dog foodand of course fresh water so that anybabies will have a good start.

The ‘watchman’ pipistrelle bat undermy (deliberately open) eaves comesout each dusk to report to the nearbycolony that all is well!

They feed on the insects and mothsthat fly around the nearby trees.

No butterflies sighted yet except fora cabbage white! But I have had aregular red tailed bee visiting whichis a real surprise as they are veryendangered. As I write it is notwarm enough yet for moths orladybirds.

Please do send in your observationsand the survey sheet delivered withthis newsletter.

Twinning with Lestrem has been veryactive recently. On the 16th & 17th ofApril a group of 45 young musiciansfrom the Lestrem “Harmonie” visitedSwanland and gave a concert inSwanland school hall. This wasattended by the host families and verywell received. Some of our localyoung musicians also performed items.

The Lestrem Harmonie has beenestablished for well over 100 years andis a major cultural activity in theircommunity, providing music for mostceremonial occasions. We want toencourage twinning for the youngerpeople so the musicians were allbetween 13 and 26 years old. Theirtwo conductors were 22 and 20.

On Sunday morning our visitorswalked round the village following theSwanland Heritage Trail, and each wasgiven questions in French to answer. Some of the young men were veryimpressed by some of the large housesand more so by the large cars they

Lestrem Twinningsaw! Our thanks are due to MrWoodward for making the schoolfacilities available for this occasion, and to all the host families.

To promote twinning activities inSwanland, and to raise funds toentertain our guests from Lestrem, aQuiz Night was held in the VillageHall on the 6th May. All thequestions concerned France in someway or other, and was well illustratedby a computer controlled projector.Supper was served at the interval.Almost 100 people attended and thewinning team received prizes of wine.Everyone voted this a great success, and we hope that it has helped tospread the twinning message inSwanland and district.

On the weekend of 20th to 22ndMay a party of pupils from year 5 atSwanland School visited Lestrem onwhat we hope will become an annualvisit. In October a party of Lestremchildren of similar age will make areturn visit to Swanland. We hopethat these visits will foster friendshipsbetween our children, which maycontinue into adult life.

Village Hall Supplementwww.sva.karoo.net/VillageHall/villagehall.htm

Welcome to our special supplement! The Village Hall has been open for sixmonths and is the scene of lots ofactivity. The committee have beenextremely busy for the first months, asthey had also to act as caretakers. Wenow have a part-time caretaker, whichhas relieved us of a lot of work.

The Hall has to be self-financing. As wellas normal running costs we have had alot of additional expenditure in setting upthe Hall so at the moment our budget isextremely tight.

We are hoping to install a wheelchair liftso everyone can use the attractiveupstairs room. We have applied forvarious grants, have launched afundraising appeal and by the end of July

we should know if we have sufficientfunds for this project.

We are delighted with the number ofpeople booking the Hall for parties, receptions and fundraising events. Weare trying to attract additional activitiessuch as adult education courses, wedding receptions and businessconferences, and would especially liketo involve the teenagers of the village. We are always looking for new ideas, however they depend on someone whois prepared to be the organiser.

The library has moved into thedownstairs room overlooking the pond.

We hope that this very pleasant spacewith its attractive surroundings, increased stock and computers, willenable many more Swanlanders torediscover the pleasures of visiting alibrary. Use it or lose it!

All residents of Swanland will have anopportunity for a more detailed reporton the progress of your Village Halland a chance to ask questions andmake any comments at the AnnualGeneral Meeting on 21st September.

A £7,000 grant from the Humber &Wolds Rural Community Council LocalNetwork Fund, enabled progresspreparing the BMX track for youngpeople of the village during the earlyspring. Several alterations to the originalplan were suggested by the youngpeople and, very kindly, by MikeDunning, the contractor at no extra cost! This enabled us to allocate funds for anumber of items in the play area for useby younger children and those that aredisabled.

A meeting was held at the village schoolwith children after their involvement inthe Sport for All campaign. The olderchildren had prepared drawingsadvertising the project and gave theirsuggestions for the future of the playingfields. Prizes were given to all whoentered and their ideas are being usedfor future development.

They also requested cycle racks, andafter an approach to the East RidingCounty Council, they were providedwithin a fortnight at no cost to theCommittee!

Playing Field Association

We are looking to provide cricket netsand areas for young people to sit andtalk in the early evening, weekends andholiday times. A long-term objective isto provide an all-weather area for 5 aside football, hockey, basketball andnetball. This is likely to cost between£30,000 & £40,000! Without asignificant grant or gift this project maytake some considerable time. In themeantime the provision of a RugbyPost may have to be sufficient.

A major fundraising effort begins onFriday 7th October with another RaceNight, for the first time in the VillageHall. Starters orders are at 8pm and thebar will open at 7-30pm. Tickets arejust £5 and include a pie and peasupper .They are available from:

SVA Newsletter - Summer 2005

When SVA produces the regular newsletters and the glossySwanland Signpost, spends members’ money to do this, andthen uses volunteers’ time to distribute them free to everyhouse, we often wonder how many recipients actuallyread them.

Every now and then we do get feed back and it isvery gratifying to realise just how many people musthave read every word in the latest Signpost. Proof hascome in the number of unused telephones, which have been handed in to MereHouse. These are collected by a charity called World Vision and (with new SIMcards) sold to raise money to help the poor in developing countries. It wasinteresting to see on the TV news, after the tsunami struck, that one of the firstplane loads of aid contained World Vision containers. Maybe the old Swanlandmobile phones helped to pay for some of that!

We have also received an envelope of used stamps from an anonymous donor. These have been passed on to HEART UK who sell them and use the funds tohelp families with raised cholesterol levels - about one in every three hundred ofthe population.

To all readers who have helped in this way, we thank you. To those who have not- it is never too late. Just drop off your unwanted mobile ‘phones and used stampsto Mere House (opposite the pond). Also Judy Cooke of 23 Mill Rise would begrateful for any used postcards.

What’s happening with Olivers?

I would like to explain to Villagers the situation regarding my businesses inSwanland. Towards the end of last year I was finding it very difficult to managemy three businesses in the Village, so for the sake of my family (and health!):

The Coffee Shop at Swanland Nurseries is now being operated by Millers.

Olivers Coffee Shop in West End is now being run by Craig Angove (an ex NavyChef) who has bought the Olivers name.

The delicatessen in West End will continue to be run by me under the new name ofCobblers Cottage.

Although I have sold my house in Sykes Close I intend to remain in the area, probably in Swanland or Ferriby. I wish the new owners and everyone inSwanland well and hope that this will stop further speculation!

Letters to the Editor

I live at 86 Main Street, near the junction of Northfield. Early morning it is a verydangerous area traffic wise, school buses, people driving too fast along MainStreet. In May a girl was knocked down by a car near the school bus stop, shewas shaken, and hurt her hip, but nothing serious, but it is only time beforesomething serious happens. People also park their cars on the junction, makingvisibility difficult for other drivers. A traffic-calming scheme is needed before it istoo late. Who do I contact about this issue?

Jackie Kitchen

Well done to the Twinning Committee who arranged a wonderful musical eveningin the School Hall with the young people of Lestrem. It was an excellent night’sentertainment! The orchestra conveyed so much enthusiasm for their music andcreated a really happy atmosphere. It was a pleasure to support them. Thanksalso to our local young people who played so well at the end of the evening.

Jan Rogerson

It’s a matter that only East Riding Council can resolve Jackie - I suggest that you and everyone else concernedabout this contact their ward councillors - does it really take a fatality to get any action? - Ed.

Anti-Social Behaviour

It seems that the latest antisocial idiocyto affect Swanland is the throwing ofraw eggs at houses after dark. Four eggshit my house late last night - one hittingthe window of a bedroom used by mygrandchildren when staying here. Quiteapart from the considerable mess thiscould be frightening for young childrenand indeed for a solitary old person.

The culprit(s) had disappeared by thetime I got out to investigate so I do notknow whether it was a group or anindividual or any other identifying matter.

Last year there was a craze fordestruction of hedges in which matter theSVA assisted the police.

I wonder if the Association might againconsider publicising the matter andadvising villagers to be aware of this sillyactivity and to keep a look out - not onlyfor the act itself but for unusualpurchases of eggs late in the day as itseems improbable that the peopleconcerned carry raw eggs around formany hours. On second thoughts theactivity is so half-witted that perhapsthey do!

Bill Hood

Letter to a Driver

Were you the driver of the large navyblue car who came down West End fartoo fast to stop at the bottom of DaleRoad at about five o'clock on theafternoon of Friday 30th May?

You saw the proud mother duck withher brood of new ducklings on theirfirst trip to the pond - just too late tostop - so you drove straight over them. You did pause to look back, then, despite the carnage, drove away.

Did you ever think what would havehappened if that had been a childcrossing the road at that point?

I was there. I did not see you coming asthe duck began to cross the road. Achild could not have seen you. Wouldyou have been able to stop beforemowing down a child? I think not - youwere travelling far too fast!

For years, residents of Swanland havebeen asking for measures to slow downtraffic at that dangerous junction andmany people have been heard to say,"It will take an accident before anythingis done." Can the traffic department atEast Riding Council not be persuadedto take action before it is a human thatis killed? Tiny, newly-hatched ducklingsthey may have been, but they werekilled because a car travelled too fast.
