FOREwORd IN THIS ISSUE:
After a few difficult years, various signs are pointing to an economic
recovery. These include the increasing confidence of consumers
and industry, and an expected economic growth rate of 1.2% for
Europe this year. Transport organisations report a return of
transport volumes to the positive level at the end of 2011 and in the
first three months of this year, the German government collected
6% more Maut road tax for trucks than in the same period in the
previous year; a significant indication of an increase in the number
of freight kilometers driven.
Despite these positive signals, efficiency and cost management
remain more important than ever for the transport operator. Together
with a network of professional dealers, DAF can significantly help you
in this area. With an ultra-modern and extensive product range. And
with an equally extensive range of services behind the product:
MultiSupport repair and maintenance contracts, and financial
services from PACCAR Financial. And not forgetting, of course, the
rapid parts service of PACCAR Parts with its ultra-modern
distribution centres throughout Europe and beyond. And all under
one roof — that of the DAF dealer. “One-stop shopping” means you
only have one point of contact for everything relating to your fleet.
And that’s only half the story. Efficiency starts with the specification
of the right vehicle, which perfectly matches the customer’s
requirements. DAF dealers not only have the knowledge and
experience to provide you with the best advice, but also have
advanced computer systems to help them do so. And last but not
least, an extremely comprehensive and efficient product range.
Tractors and rigids. Two, three and four-axle vehicles, either single
or double-driven, with day or sleeper cabin, LF, CF, XF. Three
vehicle concepts, one philosophy: quality from front to rear.
Long-lasting and reliable, for maximum usability.
Because whether you specialise in distribution transport, municipal
tasks, the building sector, agricultural transport or international road
transport, there is always a custom-made DAF. Built for optimum
driver comfort and, above all, low costs per kilometre and a high
return. There is always a DAF to suit your transport needs.

LEYLANd TRUCkS pROdUCES 5,000th factory bodied daf
At Leyland Trucks in the UK, the 5,000th DAF LF distribution truck with in-house
manufactured and mounted PACCAR body came off the production line. The
vehicle was handed to Royal Mail, the UK’s postal service that already has more
than 700 PACCAR bodied DAF vehicles in its fleet.
Leyland Trucks is the one and only truck manufacturer that assembles and installs bodies
on its truck production lines. It offers significant reductions in delivery lead times,
supporting maximum efficiency and vehicle availability.
In the UK market, dAF supplies a full range of LF distribution trucks with a PACCAR body.
The range of body works also includes the advanced aerodynamic Aerobody which is
designed to enhance fuel consumption and which now is also available on continental
markets in Europe. Thanks to the aerodynamic optimizations, fuel savings of over 4% and
resulting reductions in CO2 emissions are possible in distribution transport. At a cruising
speed of 85 km/h, the LF Aerobody can be up to 8% more economical compared to a
vehicle with a conventional body.

Roby Vissenberg, director of the Belgian company
Nirotrans, is in seventh heaven with his first two dAF XF Euro 6
tractor units. One of them now has 100,000 kilometres on
the clock already. “As a specialist in transporting parts for
aviation industry, we spend a lot of time on the road”, he
explains. “That means that we got a lot of experience very
quickly with the new generation of Euro 6 vehicles”.
Nirotrans has now purchased another three new XF Euro 6
trucks. “we have grown significantly in recent months”,
says Vissenberg. “In total, we have purchased 20 new
Euro 6 trucks, including those from other manufacturers.
The dAF XF Euro 6 has clearly shown that it is the most
economical of them all”.

“cool” dAf
Ice hockey fans in the Frankfurt area will be happy with this; RICHTER.transporte from nearby
Langenselbold is sending its first XF Euro 6 out on the road with a body bearing spectacular
advertising for the Frankfurt Lions, the local ice hockey team. The idea came from director/owner
Hans-Jörg Richter himself, a diehard fan. “A gift from a fan to the club”, says Richter, who has
never missed a home game. And the reaction from fans on Facebook, where the truck has
already received more than 600 “likes”, shows that the combination has been noticed.
RICHTER.transporte has used dAF exclusively since it was established in 2006. “I tried out all the
makes and stuck with dAF. The operating costs, the fuel consumption, it ticks all the boxes”,
says Richter about it. “And my drivers love them”. According to Richter, the first XF Euro 6 from
RICHTER.transporte uses around 10% less than its predecessor, the Euro 5 XF105.

Hoyer Logistics is a company operating around the world that
specialises in container transport of chemicals, liquids, liquid food
products and oil. The Turkish branch recently put ten brand new
dAF CF85.460s into operation. dAF was chosen partly because of
previous good experiences. The low fuel consumption also played
a major role, as did the relatively low weight of the CF itself. This is
important because every kilogram counts when transporting
liquids.

ALWAYS THE RIGHT SOLUTION!It’s always a great moment when you’re handed the keys to a new truck. It’s the climax to a detailed process in which the customer, dealer and, often, the bodybuilder jointly come up with the best possible transport solution for the customer. Starting point for this decision process is the truck’s purpose – what does the customer expect from the truck and which product specification would be most suitable? With an extensive range of ultra-modern two, three and four-axle vehicles, DAF has a truck to suit every application. For distribution transport, construction, local authorities, the agricultural sector and heavy transport over long distances; because every customer is unique and so is every DAF.
The DAF LF with GVWs of 7.5 to 19 tonnes and the DAF CF
for total weights of 18 to 50 tonnes and above are the ideal
partners for intensive distribution transport. DAF knows what
transport operators in this category want: a low empty weight
for a high gross load capacity and, most importantly, ease of
use. A low cabin floor for perfect cabin access, a large glass
area for a good all-round view, and a compact cabin for
maximum manoeuvrability. And, of course, an extra powerful
heating and ventilation system to ensure that the interior
quickly returns to a pleasant temperature when a door is
opened. But there are also other important factors: an extra
large battery capacity, so that frequent use of the tail lift does
not lead to unplanned downtime, and front axles with the
required reserve to prevent overloading. This is important if
trips are frequently made with partial loads.
Of course the LF and CF distribution vehicles also offer
optimum manoeuvrability; the front wheels have a steering
angle of around 50˚ for an extremely small turning circle.
The DAF CF is also available with a steered trailing rear axle
for urban distribution transport, where even greater payload
and volume is required. This means that an extra 7.5 tonnes
of GVW can be achieved without sacrificing manoeuvrability
and with maximum ease of use in yards. Ideal for drinks
transport, for example.

dAf CONSTRUCTION vEHICLES: bUILT TO bE bUILT ONNowhere is there a wider range of transport applications
than in construction and DAF can offer the right transport
solution for every application here as well. Light LF 4x2
tippers for distributing construction materials.
A sophisticated CF 6x2 chassis with leading or trailing
rear axle for transporting waste containers. CF and XF
6x2 and 6x4 tractors. XF 8x4 heavy transport tractors for
gross combination weights of 120 tonnes or more.
A double-drive 6x4 or 8x4 chassis for concrete mixers or
tippers. And for extra large loading capacities, the 8x2
chassis with leading and trailing rear axles. And for
applications where regular off-road driving is required,
DAF offers the sturdy LF and CF Construction models.
The 6x4 and 8x4 versions of the CF and XF are fitted with
DAF’s familiar eight-rod tandem with hub reduction for
applications that involve frequent off-road driving and with
single reduction in the case of limited off-road driving. The
eight-rod tandem axle suspension provides a favourable roll
centre and maximum stability, which is particularly
important for concrete mixers among other equipment.
The generous articulation also contributes to excellent
traction off road. And should it become really difficult, the
standard cross and inter-axle locks offer a solution.
In addition, the large approach angle (25˚) and ground
clearance (40 cm) of the CF 6x4 and 8x4 Construction
come in very useful off road, as does the solid steel
protection plate underneath the radiator. These are things
that make the difference in practice as to whether damage
is incurred or not. The same applies to the steel bumper
that comes as standard with every DAF. And because the
driver is responsible for loading and has to be able to look
in the body from time to time, a practical step and roof
handle are provided on the driver’s side of the CF cabin.
These may only be details, but they are well thought-out
and very valuable to the driver. Another important detail:
DAF’s construction vehicles are easy to clean. Both inside
and out. This means that the vehicles quickly look their best
again after intensive use, which is also important in terms of
the truck’s residual value and the company’s image.
IN ACTION 02 2014 Lf
8 APPLICATIONS
Light LF 4x2 road sweepers. Gully emptiers with a 6x2 or
8x2 CF chassis. A heavy 6x2 CF chassis for transporting
glass collection crates and large waste containers.
Vehicles for local authority applications frequently operate
in towns. This is why the LF and CF have a friendly
appearance, easy access, excellent all-round visibility and
optimum manoeuvrability. And of course they are fitted
with an ultra-clean Euro 6 engine as standard.
Superstructures in this category are often complex, so the
ease of mounting them is important. This is why the
chassis of the DAF LF, CF and XF are completely flat. Air
tanks and reservoirs are located on the inside wherever
possible, so that maximum space is left for mounting
hydraulic systems, supports, compressors or tool
boxes. The soot filter and the SCR unit of the
exhaust system on the CF and XF can be installed
ex-factory in a number of different fitting positions
depending on the intended application of the truck
and the superstructure fitted. The standard AdBlue
tank is conveniently mounted under the sleeper cabin
but can also be mounted on the chassis. And to
power the superstructure, DAF offers a wide range of
gearbox, engine and flywheel PTOs. Various engine
speed regulators are also available.
The unique “DAF Body Builders Module” also ensures that
numerous electronic functionalities in the superstructure
can be controlled from the cabin and vice versa.
The most frequent application in the municipal authorities
sector is, of course, the refuse collection vehicle.
Depending on the use of a side or rear loader, a 4x2
chassis or 6x2 chassis with (steered) trailing rear axle is
used for this, or a 6x2 chassis with a steered 7.5 tonne
leading rear axle. The latter configuration is particularly
suited for use as a refuse collection vehicle with a rear
loader, avoiding overloading of the driven axle and
offering optimum ease of use in yards.

Ease of use in yards, the need to be able to clean and
disinfect vehicles quickly, compact low cabs to minimise
the risk of damage from branches; the agricultural sector
also has its own requirements for a truck. Flexibility is
another important topic, which is why combinations of
rigids with trailers are a popular choice.
A good example is the milk collection tanker: the trailer
and the truck are often not loaded at the same time and at
the same location. Another reason for choosing a rigid
with a trailer is the opportunity to optimise the revenue
per kilometre by using the legally permitted combination
length of 18.75 metres. And in order to optimise revenue,
DAF uses a light chassis to deliver a high gross payload.
This is essential in bulk and tank transport, for example.
The free space on the chassis enables compressors to be
located easily. And DAF also offers engine outputs up to
375 kW/510 hp in the CF series especially for applications
where a maximum load capacity is important and no
concessions can be made in terms of performance.
A 4x2 LF chassis with a crane and an open body in
forestry. A 6x2 CF chassis with a steered trailing rear axle
for maximum manoeuvrability for the milk tanker. A heavy
6x4 XF chassis for transporting trees, where off-road travel
is a frequent necessity. A multiplicity of transport
applications also requires a multiplicity of transport
solutions in the agricultural sector. This is what the DAF
product range offers, supported by a professional dealer
organisation that knows that downtime can have major
consequences, particularly in special work.
AGRICULTURAL SECTOR REqUIRES fLExIbILITY
IN ACTION 02 2014
10 APPLICATIONS
If the weight of the load permits, rigid/trailer combinations
also offer opportunities in international transport to
optimise the revenue per kilometre. Where a semi-trailer
offers a load volume of up to 100 m3, a truck with a trailer
can achieve up to 120 m3. It’s not for nothing that flowers
and plants, for example, are often transported through
Europe with 6x2 volume combinations with a central axle
trailer. But the truck and trailer is also commonplace in
container transport, international refrigerated and frozen
transport and transport using swap bodies, such as the
well-known German BDF loading systems. DAF also offers
complete BDF solutions ex-factory – the chassis comes
complete with frame and twist-locks.
Fitted with a trailing axle, the 6x2 rigids from the CF and XF
series ensure high payload. You can choose between a
7.5-tonne trailing axle with single assembly and a 10-tonne
trailing axle with double assembly. And if the highest
possible load volume is top priority – for example for
transporting insulation materials or household items – DAF
even provides the “Low Deck” chassis for an internal load
height of three metres. This enables the truck to handle
load volumes of up to 120 m3 within the legal limits.
Maximum efficiency in long-distance transport also means
being aware of what the driver needs. The XF series offers
the most spacious cabin in the industry and is the
benchmark when it comes to working, living and sleeping
comfort. A DAF is also the best choice for the driver –
whether it’s the LF, CF or XF.
DAF provides vehicles for every kind of transport and
application that are tailored to meet the individual
requirements of users and transport operators. Developed
for maximum durability and reliability, with low operating
costs and a high level of driver comfort; these are
standard on every DAF.

Every transport application places unique demands on the
truck. That is why every DAF is unique, manufactured to
customer specifications and put together from a wide
choice of cabs, chassis, drivelines, PTOs and axle
configurations. Efficiency starts with the correct
specification for the vehicle, so DAF offers a number of
advanced knowledge and advice systems. All these
systems help to create the ideal level of communication
between the customer, the dealer and the bodybuilder; as
such, they play an important role in determining and in
manufacturing the best transport solution. Ultimately that
is where efficiency begins.
The DAF dealer not only has knowledge about the
product, but also about the applications and their use.
The DAF sales advisor also has access to TSI, or Truck
Sales Information, a unique and comprehensive
information system where all the information can be found
on specifications, functions, advantages of use and legal
requirements. The DAF sales advisor can also make use
of TOPEC, one of the most revolutionary systems in the
industry for calculating and specifying the correct vehicle.
It takes all the important aspects of use into consideration:
application, weights and dimensions, turning circles,
performance and complete route simulations. TOPEC
uses this data as the foundation to determine the ideal
vehicle specification and it can demonstrate clearly in
advance how the truck itself will actually perform with any
semi-trailer or trailer. TOPEC also provides a complete
database with chassis drawings that can also be used in
CAD design systems.
Furthermore, DAF has created a comprehensive
website especially for the superstructure industry:
www.DAFBBI.com. Here you’ll find information such as
detailed chassis drawings, specification sheets and
bodybuilding guidelines. You’ll also be able to download
CAD files for designing the body and 3D files are available
to help you create a visualisation. Even more extensive is
the DAF BodyBuilder Information Plus. This site can only
be accessed after registering via a password, but it does
provide even greater information. In addition, bodybuilders
can use BBIPlus to find relevant Whole Vehicle Type
Approval information, which will enable them to approve a
complete vehicle including superstructure. This makes it
possible for constructed vehicles to be given a registration
number throughout the EU via administrative channels.
More than 2,000 bodybuilders around the world now have
access to BBIPlus with more joining every day.

14 CLIMATE
T iredness of the driver plays an
important role in 10 to 15% of
serious traffic accidents. By providing
a pleasant climate in the cabin, the truck
industry is actively contributing to the
alertness of drivers. Temperature, humidity
and the CO2 level in the air play a major role
here. One important indicator of poor
interior climate and/or tiredness is the
tendency to open a window. This used to
be very common, as it was the only way to
regulate the temperature in the cabin on
warm days. Although things have changed
nowadays, many drivers still drive with the
window open. These days, however, they
are actually better off with the window
closed because that is when the air
conditioning or climate control works best.
And, above all, it is better for fuel
consumption! “A good cabin climate makes
a major contribution to traffic safety.
But that is not the same climate that a
driver wants to sleep or live in”, explains
Jozé Ingenpass. “Our challenge is to
combine the two”.
dRIvING “When driving, it is essential that
the driver is always fresh and alert”,
acknowledges Ingenpass. “At DAF, for
example, we always make sure that the
temperature around the driver’s feet and
legs is around three degrees higher than
around his head. That is proven to be the
most comfortable. Furthermore, the
humidity level in the cabin must not get high
enough for condensation to form on the
windows. In our DAF distribution vehicles,
the focus is on a heating system with an
extra-large capacity, so that the interior
quickly returns to the desired temperature
after the doors have been opened. In our
long-distance trucks, the air conditioning is
more important, combined with ventilation,
to avoid a driver having a dry throat and
prickly eyes after a couple of hours driving”.
STATIONARY When a vehicle is stationary,
managing the climate is more difficult. “If
the driver uses his cabin heater, he wants
the cabin as a whole to be comfortably
warm. One of the ways that we achieve
that is by allowing the warm air to flow from
behind the seats forwards across the floor.
It is important here that the driver himself
keeps the roof hatch slightly ajar, for
example; if everything is shut, the CO2 level
in the cabin rises because of the driver’s
breathing. That is not dangerous in itself,
dAf TAkES CARE Of THE CLImATE IN THE CAbIN
A FIT dRIVER IS A SAFE dRIVER
Every driver wants his cabin to have a pleasant climate for working in, to be comfortable for relaxing in and to be cool and fresh to sleep in. At DAF, it is Jozé Ingenpass’s mission to create the best conceivable climate in every DAF cabin. Because a fit driver is a safe driver.

but a higher proportion of CO2 will mean
that you wake up sluggish and without
feeling refreshed. This also keeps things
drier in the cabin because we all exhale a
large mugful of water in condensation while
we sleep overnight. And that doesn’t even
take into consideration the towel that’s
drying in the cabin.”
NIGHT’S REST But the biggest challenge
for Ingenpass is to find solutions to give
drivers a good night’s rest when it is
scorching hot outside. “Because of the
strict driving and rest times, drivers are
increasingly forced to sleep during the day.
But you try doing that when it’s 30 degrees
outside”, is how Ingenpass describes the
“daymare” suffered by many drivers. “And it
can also be oppressively warm at night. It is
a fact that people do not sleep well at
temperatures above 26ºC. Then you wake
up tired, which is not what you want if you
are a driver. For this situation, stand alone

parking coolers are the solution. That
makes a real difference, but you have to
use them properly. The best way is to
ventilate the cabin beforehand and then
close all the windows, doors and curtains.
Then you let your engine idle with your truck
air condition turned on, to pre-cool the
cabin. When your cabin is on the desired
temperature, you program the parking
cooler not to run for longer than necessary,
because of the power supply.
Although a normal truck battery nowadays
can handle quite a lot, you must be
cautious with high energy consumers like
the parking cooler. To assure that the truck
will always start, I suggest to involve the
DAF dealer to select the right battery.”
Ingenpass is determined when she says:
“At DAF, we see it as our duty to create a
good climate for drivers in all conditions.
During driving and when resting, at
temperatures that vary between -30 and
+40. That is an exciting challenge”. p
Jozé Ingenpass with the air curtain of the XF door; just one of the many details that help to create a pleasant climate for the driver. The warm air that is blown upwards through the openings ensures that the cold from the side window doesn’t reach the driver. So his shoulders are always warm.
When developing new types, DAF test vehicles are tested in extreme conditions. Like here, in the scorching Sierra Nevada in Southern Spain, where temperatures in summer can top 40 degrees.

In the last twenty years, the tRP program has expanded into the most professional and market leading range of universal parts for all truck and trailer makes.
mAxImUm EffICIENCY “Quality parts
for all truck and trailer makes, as well as
a wide range of workshop consumables
can be found at one location – the DAF

manager, PACCAR Parts Europe. “TRP
stands for a unique program on the
market that supports hauliers in further
increasing their efficiency.” p

Good lighting has always been an
important focus for DAF. The
legendary 2600 of the sixties was
fitted with four dual lamps. The outer ones
were for dipped light and the inner ones for
main beam. If one of the lamps for dipped
light stopped working (which in those days
was a distinct possibility), the driver could
simply change it for the adjacent lamp. In
this way he always had dipped light. As with
all light bulbs, dual lamps were very
inefficient: not more than five to ten per cent
of the energy used was turned into light.
HALOGEN DAF introduced H4 halogen
lighting in the last year that the DAF 3200
was produced, in the mid eighties. High
beam and low beam were also combined,
but the advantages were legion: the
lifetime was 10 times longer and the light
output produced was many times higher.
In order to optimalise the light beam, a
From simple candles to hypermodern lED-lighting: in more than one hundred years of motoring history, lighting has undergone incredible developments. Even so, some inventions in the field of automotive lighting are older than you would think. Dipped headlights were invented almost 100 years ago and swivel lights as early as 1934. And over 50 years ago the asymmetric beam, which throws more light on the curb, was introduced. In the last 50 years, developments have accelerated, also thanks to DAF.

In addition to LED-technology, DAF
offers yet more innovative lighting.
Every Euro 6 DAF (LF, CF, XF) is
equipped as standard with
‘cornering lights’. These shine in the
direction of the vehicle when
manoeuvring and turning. And when
‘crawl’ is selected, both cornering
lights switch on, so that the driver
gets a wider field of vision. In this
way, manoeuvring in the dark
becomes safer and more
comfortable. For even more safety,
the dashboard of every DAF Euro 6
switches automatically to ‘black
panel mode’ when the driver selects
reverse. Almost the entire dashboard
lighting dims while only the rev
counter and the speedometer remain
illuminated with a subdued light.

reflector was required for the ‘heavy work’
and a lens for the ‘fine work’. With the
introduction of the CF75/CF85 in 2001,
DAF introduced the following step: H7
halogen lighting (for low beam), in
combination with H1 (for main beam). With
a power of 70 watts, the H7 delivered an
even higher light output and longer life.
Technical improvements in reflectors made
glass lenses superfluous, so that DAF – as
one of the first truck manufacturers –
could make use of clear and unbreakable
Lexan.
xENON In 2002, DAF introduced DAF
Xenon lighting on the XF95, the former top
model. With Xenon, use was made of gas
discharge, whereby a gas – in this case
Xenon – glows under the influence of high
voltage. If the light output of an H7 lamp
was around 1.500 Lumen, a Xenon lamp
could easily achieve more than 2.000. DAF
combined xenon lighting with a lens,
creating a more homogenous beam.
LEd In 2012, DAF became the first truck
manufacturer to introduce LED for low
beam lighting on its new flagship: the XF
Euro 6. The principal of ‘Light Emitting
Diodes’ (in which under certain
circumstances, semiconductors emit light
when a current is passed through them)
has been known for more than 100 years.
But only for the past couple of years has it
been applied to automotive lighting. LED
lighting has many advantages: the light
output is higher and the projected beam is
wider and deeper than that of Xenon and
halogen. The white LED light is also very
easy on the eyes and thus more restful for
the eyes of the driver. Moreover, LEDs are
compact and therefore easy to integrate,
as well being hardly sensitive to shocks
and vibrations. This gives them practically
an infinite life. p

farmers and contractors came from
far and wide to my father and uncle’s
business to get their agricultural tools
repaired”, recalls Vervaet. “Of course that
was great, but there wasn’t much to do in
the winter. To make sure there was enough
work over that time of year as well, the
company started looking for other things
to do. Then came the extraordinarily wet
winter of 1974. The ground was so
saturated that all the beet harvesters being
used then, which were still very primitive,
got stuck because their wheels were too
At the end of the Fifties, the father and uncle of Edwin Vervaet set up a technical workshop in the hamlet of Biervliet in the Dutch province of zeeland. they used a corner of their father’s barn (who worked as a contractor) to repair anything that had an engine on it or in it. the company grew quickly; within a few years, the brothers owned several car dealerships and were busy selling and repairing agricultural machinery. Since then, Frans Vervaet B.V. has become the leading producer of self-propelling beet harvesters and slurry handling machines. the driving force behind these extraordinary vehicles is a PACCAR engine developed and built by DAF.

And all this is done at lightning speed.
Once the storage bunker is full (note that
we are talking here about 25 tonnes of
beets, around 40 m3!), the beet harvester
drives to the waiting tipper to unload.
35 A YEAR With around 90 employees,
Vervaet builds between 30 and 35 beet
harvesters a year, which are primarily sold
to contractors in the Netherlands, Belgium,
France, Denmark, Sweden, Lithuania and
the United Kingdom. Vervaet has recently
also taken its first steps into the North
American market. Like agriculture itself,
building agricultural machinery follows the
seasons. “From September to December,
we build beet harvesters”, explains
Vervaet. “And from February to September
it is slurry handling machines, also around
35 a year. This way the company is nicely
balanced”.
SLURRY Vervaet has been building
self-propelling slurry handling machines
since the start of the Nineties. The most
important markets are the Netherlands,
Germany and Belgium. The striking
behemoths with their three or five wheels
and gigantic slurry tank of 14 or even 19 m3
are the result of stricter environmental
legislation and regulations. “Previously, you
could still spread slurry on the ground”,
explains Vervaet. “Nowadays you have to
inject it into the ground, around five
centimetres deep”. This involves a lot of
advanced technology; GPS shows the
operator exactly where he has already been
and sensors can tell from the colour of the
grass how much nitrogen (=slurry) has to
be added to the soil. “The driver can simply
sit in the cabin with his slippers on”, is how
Vervaet summarises the process.
narrow and their engines weren’t powerful
enough. A contractor nearby had built a
self-propelling beet harvester that didn’t
have these problems and he asked my
father and uncle to develop the concept
further. They used a wide range of parts
and components for this, including a
second-hand DAF engine. And the rest is
history; we’ve been a loyal customer of
DAF for 40 years now”.
JACk Of ALL TRAdES Nobody who
comes face to face with the Vervaet Beet
Eater 625 – the second largest model
– can be anything other than impressed;
the mighty machine is 14 metres long, four
metres high and 3.30 metres wide. The
wheels are almost as high as a person and
ensure an enormous level of traction. Their
large rolling surface and low tyre pressure
mean that the machine does not sink into
the ground, so the delicate structure of the
soil is not damaged. Thanks to its
six-wheel steering, the beet harvester –
despite its impressive dimensions - has
a turning circle of just 8.50 metres. It is
driven by a 13 litre DAF MX-13 engine; this
drives the three hydraulic pumps, which in
turn drive the various tools. Because the
term beet harvester covers an entire
production process; something that used
to involve a whole procession of people
and vehicles is now handled by the Vervaet
Beet Eater with just one operator behind
the wheel; the process starts with cutting
the leaves off the sugar beets or chicory.
In the next stage, the machine removes
the stems from the beets (also known as
scalping) before pulling them out of the
ground. Once inside the machine, excess
soil is removed from the beets before they
are deposited in the storage bunker.
vERvAET ANd dAf As mentioned
before, Vervaet has been a loyal DAF
customer for 40 years now. Why? “DAF
uses the same criteria for its PACCAR
engines as we do for our products”, says
Vervaet; “Technically advanced, but
accessible in terms of configuration. Truck
engines have a number of advantages
compared with industrial engines (that we
use for our heaviest models): firstly, there
are never any problems with parts service
and, when it comes to maintenance, the
owner can simply use the services of the
DAF dealer. Furthermore, DAF engines are
extremely reliable and also economical: our
machines have the lowest fuel consumption
on the market and that is in no small part
due to us choosing DAF. In our industry,
we measure consumption per hectare, not
per kilometre. Average consumption is
around 30 litres per hectare, while our
competitors are hovering around 40 litres
per hectare”.
GROWTH Being down to earth is one of
the success factors for Vervaet. “Our
customers want a product that always
works and that is as easy as possible to
operate”, summarises Edwin Vervaet. “And
we also apply this down-to-earth approach
to our own future; of course we have to
grow so we can stay active in the market.
But growth itself is not a goal for us.
We are and will remain a family operation.
Our priority is to build a healthy business
for our descendants” p

IN ACTION 02 2014
A considerable number of the DAFs
driving around in Ghana already have
a lifetime on the smooth European
roads behind them before they are exported to
Ghana with around 1.5 million kilometres on
the clock. They then spend years in service
there, often under harsh conditions. In Ghana,
used DAFs are primarily sold to small
transport companies and
independent drivers. They use the
vehicles to transport wood, fruit,
cocoa or oil to the neighbouring
countries. Long journeys where the
drivers often spend days on the
road.
AS bIG A LOAd AS pOSSIbLE In Ghana, many imported DAFs
are fitted with a locally produced
body with just one criterion: being
able to transport as big a load as
possible. The fact that this
sometimes compromises the
permitted GVW is glossed over
lovingly. Trucks in Ghana also
face plenty of other challenges: the roads are
often of poor quality and usually dirt roads,
which takes its toll on the tyres, axles and
suspension. The climate also exacts quite a
price, with temperatures that consistently
fluctuate between 30 and 40 degrees and
torrential downpours in the rainy season.
NEW “They just keep driving”, is how Frédéric
Roux explains the success of DAF in the
market in Ghana in a nutshell. Roux is General
Manager of CFAO Ghana, responsible for
selling new DAFs in Ghana. DAF is now the
third largest brand in Ghana in terms of sales of
new vehicles. That is based on selling 60 to
70 new DAFs per year. “DAF has an excellent
reputation in Ghana when it comes to reliability
and sturdiness”, says Roux. “In Ghana, we
mainly sell CF85.460 6x4 tractor units with
Euro 3 engines. Furthermore there is a growing
demand for 8x4 construction vehicles”. DAFs
that are sold new in Ghana differ from their
European counterparts in several important
ways: they have greater ground clearance, an
even stronger chassis, a heavy duty engine
With an area of around 240,000 km2, ghana is almost as large as the United kingdom. thanks to its favourable location, the country is an important gateway to West Africa, especially Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast and togo. ghana is a prosperous African country, partly thanks to the abundant natural resources and raw materials it has, such as gold, crude oil, cocoa, wood, industrial diamonds, manganese, bauxite, fish, rubber and palm oil. Around 50% of trucks in ghana have a DAF logo on the grille. Why this preference for the truck brand from Eindhoven?

staying in one piece in the most demanding

AmbITIONS “We currently have three branches:
in the capital Accra, in Takoradi and in Kumasi”,
continues Roux. “We have our own workshops
there and we handle sales. We also have a
mobile service truck that is available around the
clock, seven days a week. And to support our
rapid growth, we have recently started building a
brand new service and parts centre in Tema,
around 25 kilometres east of Accra. That will
have an area of 30,000 m2. We want to double
our presence in Ghana’s market within three to
five years”, says Roux decisively. p
Sapholda Ventures Ltd. was set up in 2000 by Adolf Tetteh
Adjei, who previously earned his spurs with the customs
service in Ghana. “We wanted to establish a company that
went beyond just road transport”, says Tetteh Adjei. “We
see ourselves much more as a logistics partner; as well as
long-distance transport, we also offer distribution from door

clearance”. As a result of their professionalism, Sapholda

“serving industry since 1904”. this proud slogan is on all of the
100+ trucks owned by wreford’s transport, based in northampton,
england. the family business has been a loyal customer of daf for
many years. they recently added the first daf Xf ftG euro 6 to their
fleet. together with a three-axle curtain sided trailer, the 6x2 tractor
unit forms a typical british combination, with a Gcw of 44 tonnes. fuel
prices in the united Kingdom are the highest in all of europe, so
wreford’s is glad that the fuel consumption of the euro 6 newcomer is
even lower than that of the already economical euro 5 predecessor.
this daf Xf105.460 far is operated by German willi betz, one of the
largest transport companies in europe. this specific vehicle is used
to transport mixed feeds. the light daf chassis provides a high gross
load capacity, which is essential in bulk transport. this industry often
uses a combination of rigids and trailers; the trailer is temporarily
parked somewhere so that the rigid is better able to access cramped
farmyards. the liftable rear axle ensures a tight turning circle and
makes it highly ‘yard-friendly’.
theo rood, based in Zwaag in the netherlands, has
been involved in salvage and recovery of vehicles for
more than 35 years now. as a loyal daf customer,
the company recently added the first cf euro 6 to its

favour of the purchase were the price/quality ratio,
the body-friendly chassis and the image of the truck.

the british metal recycling company smith metals recently
added three lf fa.220 construction trucks to its fleet for
collecting scrap metal. the lfs are fitted with a skip-loaded
system and were purchased because of the positive experience
that the company had already had with daf. “ours is a
demanding business and we need trucks that are durable and
reliable”, says site manager Jason wilson, “which our dafs
have proved to be. the new lf model also looks good... they are
the calling card for our company”.
the “im füchschen” brewery is one of the four craft breweries in
düsseldorf and has been around since 1640. the brewery also often
participates in events in the old town. the recently purchased lf euro
6 fa210 is not just used as a means of transport, but also as a
promotional vehicle. because as well as factors like manoeuvrability,
reliability and fuel efficiency, the image of the lf euro 6 also played an
important role in the purchasing process. the owner of the brewery
bought the lf from the photo, without having seen the truck “in the
flesh” beforehand.
loyal daf customer versteijnen logistics has around 120 dafs
in its fleet. one of them is this brand new Xf 410 ft euro 6
space cab. the company handles many types of international
transport, including bulk transport and air cargo. versteijnen
opted for the special low deck version of the Xf so it could meet
all the different transport requirements of its customers. this
choice provides additional flexibility because it allows internal
load heights of no less than 3 metres.
German company aru specialises in waste transport and
recycling. a collaboration with the bodybuilder saw the
development of a unique concept for waste collection: a
container with an integral crane that can be installed as a whole
on location using a hook-lift system. the foundation for this
construction is an 8x2 daf cf85.460 faQ. one reason why aru
chose daf was the high load capacity. the steerable front and
trailing rear axle ensure a tight turning circle and make it highly
suitable for confined spaces.

easier.
this daf cf75 310 ftt 6x4 was purchased by lasicon,
a romanian construction and contracting firm.
the truck is fitted with a crane body and its compact
dimensions mean that it can be used in very tight
building sites. this configuration can also be used
much more quickly than a traditional building crane.
this brand new Xf510 euro 6 ftG 6x2 with liftable leading rear axle is
the proud possession of the swedish company minas Åkeri, a company
that specialises in heavy transport. the company transports vehicles
including wheel loaders and dumpers for dhl and is a loyal daf
customer. “i have been driving with the brand since 1997 now”, says
owner tomas andersson. “daf is the most reliable compared with
other brands and that is reflected in the operating costs”.
Pyramid trucking from new Zealand uses this impressive
b-double combination for long-distance transport of
products including food. the two trailers are towed by a
Xf105.510 ftt 6x4 with a super space cab. the
combination as a whole has a Gcw of 44 tonnes. one
reason why Pyramid trucking chose daf was the excellent
after-sales organisation of the importer southPac. others
were the favourable fuel consumption figures for the Xf105
and, last but not least, the image of the truck itself.
in october last year, a brand new factory in Ponta Grossa in brazil started

kENWORTH AUSTRALIA delivers the 50,000th trucK
the bayswater factory of Kenworth australia (in melbourne)
recently witnessed the handover of the 50,000th Kenworth
produced there to Peter rodney, director of rodney’s
transport service (rts). rodney was presented with the
keys to his brand new K200 by mike dozier, managing
director of Paccar australia. Kenworth has been developing
and producing trucks for the australian market since 1971.
the brand has been the market leader in the heavy segment
since 2001.
At the beginning of the twentieth century,
T.A. Peterman, an entrepreneur in the timber
industry, was faced with logistical problems.
The timber that was harvested in the forests
took a long time to get to his sawmills. The
traditional methods of floating logs down river,
or the use of steam tractors and horse teams
was not fast enough for him. Developments in
the truck world were coming thick and fast
and Mr Peterman saw an opportunity: if he
were to start building trucks, his problems
would be solved.
Peterman began with the refurbishment of old
army trucks and in 1938 he took over a
bankrupt truck manufacturer, which then built
him two trucks for transporting timber. In 1939,
Mr Peterman decided to make trucks for others
as well. The name of his trucks: Peterbilt. This
year, Peterbilt is celebrating the 75th
anniversary of its founding. Peterbilt established
a reputation as a specialist in trucks for
heavy-duty tasks right from its very first model
(model 334). In the years that followed,
Peterbilt grew steadily and in 1958 the
company was taken over by PACCAR
Inc., which was still called Pacific Car &
Foundry at the time. The market share of
Peterbilt continued to grow and in 1958
production moved to Newark, also in
California. In 1969, a second factory was
opened in Madison, Tennessee, in order
to meet the increasing demand. In 1980,
yet another new factory was opened, this
time in denton, Texas, where Peterbilt
headquarters is based today.
Peterbilt also has a factory in Sainte-Thérèse,
Canada, where medium-duty trucks are built.
with around 300 dealers spread across the
United States and Canada, in 2014 the truck
manufacturer has a well-established presence
in North America.
ANNIVERSARY ACTIVITIES
Peterbilt is organising a number of activities this
year to highlight its 75th anniversary. As an
example, an anniversary truck with a trailer that
is set up as a mobile museum will be visiting
dealers and events. A limited edition anniversary
version of the new flagship model (model 579)
will also be available to customers.
