Join participants for dinner this evening as we begin exploring the soul of Java. Friday, Oct. 2: Yogyakarta’s palace and templeAfter breakfast, meet with Paula Swart, participants, and our guide for a briefing. Then head out to visit the vast, ornate Kraton (the Sultan’s Palace), dating from 1755. This walled city is home to over 20,000 people and encompasses a complex of pavilions, workshops, homes, and the Taman Sari (Water Castle) designed as a royal pleasure park. Visit the 10th century Prambanan Temple, a World Heritage Site and the finest Hindu temple complex in the country with the remains of over 200 temples. Rising above concentric squares are three temples dedicated to the three great Hindu divinities (Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma). Admire the outstanding sculptural detail illustrating the epic of the Ramayana. Freshen up at the hotel before dinner this evening and a wayang kulit (leather puppet) performance. Saturday, Oct. 3: The iconic Borobodur TempleOne of Southeast Asia’s most impressive sites and the largest single Buddhist monument in the world is our focus today. The World Heritage Site of Borobudur dates from the 8th and 9th centuries. Over two million stone blocks were required to build the three-tiered temple with more than 2,500 relief panels, and more than 500 Buddha statues. Borobudur perfectly reflects the Buddhist cosmology, which divides the universe into three separate levels; the worlds of desires, forms, and formlessness. Enjoy ample time to explore. On our way back to our hotel, visit a traditional Kris maker. The distinctive Kris is an asymmetrical

Sunday, Oct. 4: Temples and Town Life in BlitarHop on the train this morning for the scenic six-hour journey to Blitar, a delightful provincial city off the standard Javan tourist trails. We’re coming here to experience beautiful countryside, green rice fields, and the remains of the ancient Majapahit Kingdom. It’s also an opportunity for an authentic experience of Javanese daily life. This afternoon visit the 12th century Penataran Temple, one of the largest in East Java, dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and the library of Indonesia’s first president Sukarno. Monday, Oct. 5: Cooking and Cycling in BlitarJoin the chef at the local market to shop for fresh ingredients for this morning’s hands on cooking class. Tuesday, Oct. 6: Coffee Plantations on the road to MalangFollow the road through green hills and valleys to the Kawisari coffee plantation. The scenery is breathtaking with lush jungles as far as the eye can see punctuated by waterfalls, rivers, and a magical mist. The plantation is surrounded by two mountains; here coffee is produced using a secret recipe from the Dutch era. Further on, visit a rubber plantation to see the tapping of the trees and the processing of raw rubber into sheets. Stay for two nights in Malang, a cultured city established by the Dutch at the end of the 18th century. Enjoy a guided walk in the colonial city centre admiring the elegant whitewashed mansions, the fascinating backstreets, and soak up the ambiance at one of the charming Dutch era cafés. Saturday, Oct. 10: Traditional Balinese Arts: Gamelan, Batik, and KecakEnjoy a relaxing morning at leisure, then head out this afternoon to the Agung Rai Museum of Art to meet with the founder (schedule permitting) who has built one of Indonesia’s most impressive private art collections. Learn about his vision to establish a centre for visual and performing arts to sustain these traditions. Join a batik workshop; compare Balinese and Javanese batiks and the history of this art form. Sunday, Oct. 11: Temples and a Hosted DinnerThe temple of Pura Taman Ayun is a perfect expression of Bali’s enduring serenity. The huge water temple dating from 1634, is surrounded by a wide moat; stroll through the inner courtyards and admire the multitiered shrines. The Alas Kedaton Temple is similarly peaceful, situated in the midst of green forest. Tanah Lot Temple is one of the most important sea temples; although largely reconstructed, it is nonetheless a spectacular sight, perched on a rock surrounded by the sea. Arrive at our seaside resort this afternoon, with time to enjoy the nearby beach. This evening meet Dr. Lawrence Blair, explorer, film maker, and long time resident of Bali. Lawrence will discuss the making of the EMMY award-winning adventure series ‘Ring of Fire’, describing his ten years of filming Indonesian explorations. Monday, Oct. 12: Countryside Exploration by Land RoverAn eye-popping exploration of Bali’s unspoiled lush countryside today. Head out by four-passenger Land Rover high into the mountains through the spectacular rice terraces of Jatiluwih. The water temples providing irrigation are part of a cooperative water management system known as subak dating back to the 9th century. The cultural landscape of this part of Bali is recognized as a World Heritage Site for the subak system is a manifestation of the Tri Hita Karana philosophy that we will learn about today. The thousands of hectares of lush green paddy fields cascading in terraces from the upper reaches of volcanoes into the deep valleys is a sight that will surely stay with you as one of the iconic images of your trip. Wednesday, Oct. 7: Epic Sunrise on Mount BromoThe volcanic Bromo area is one of Southwest Asia’s most breathtaking sights; the epic lunar landscape, the huge Tengger crater, and the dramatic highland light make the whole experience unforgettable. It will be a very early start (around 2AM) this morning to reach the lookout point for the best view of that ethereal sunrise. Then, drive across the sand sea to the base of Mount Bromo itself and walk up to the rim of the crater for yet more incredible vistas! Note that if weather conditions are not suitable for sunrise viewing, we’ll visit Mount Bromo later in the day. This afternoon tour the hotel’s collection of Asian arts and antiquities including 19th century ceramics, 13th century jade carvings, Ming dynasty porcelain, and the complete façade of a Chinese temple. Friday, Oct. 9: Balinese Rural LifeHead out of Ubud to the village of Guliang, where a community guide will show us the way of life in rural Bali. Visit the primary school for insight into the educational system and a traditional home to learn how the design of house compounds adhere to Asta Kosala Kosali rules, similar to Feng Shui, about the location of buildings and the height of steps. Learn about the complexities of rice growing from planting through harvesting to the best cooking methods. Joining InstructionsThis tour begins with our welcome dinner at 7PM on October 1st. Please ensure that you arrive in Yogyakarta by this time to join the group. All travellers arriving on the start date of the tour will be met on arrival and transferred to the group hotel. This transfer is included in the cost of the tour. When you book the designated pre-trip accommodation with Worldwide Quest, your transfer from the airport to our group hotel on arrival is included. If you are making your own pre-trip arrangements, this transfer can be provided at additional cost. The tour concludes with a single complimentary transfer from the hotel to the Denpasar Airport on the last day of the tour. Please contact us to verify timing of this transfer prior to making any flight arrangements.

Level of Activity: ModerateA good level of fitness is important for this trip. You must be comfortable walking on uneven terrain and irregular paving and climbing stairs. You should be comfortable walking for up to three hours at a stretch, unassisted. We will be doing a fair amount of walking in town centres.

Accommodation The Phoenix Hotel in the heart of Yogyakarta is a fusion of Asian and European décor with an inviting swimming pool and spa. The Tugu Hotel in Blitar is a beautiful East Javanese mansion dating from the 1850s, carefully renovated to preserve its artistic and historic character, blended with modern touches. The Tugu Hotel in Malang is located in the city centre and houses a vast, priceless collection of antiques amassed by the hotel’s founder. Kamoneka at Monkey Forest is perfectly located close to the Ubud Market and all the cultural activities of the Ubud Palace. The Tugu Hotel in Bali is set in a tranquil coastal enclave in stylish surf outpost Canggu Beach with thatched roof suites dotted in the lush gardens. All hotels have swimming pools and spas.
