Graduation Ceremony

On October 12th, 2012 – the last Friday before the lecture period of the winter semester – the Graduation Ceremony took place in the Audimax. In respect of the number of alumni to be honoured in the academic year 2011/12 a new record has been set: the department could congratulate 208 students on their successful final degree (among them 59 bachelor exams, 99 diploma and master exams, 18 state examinations for mathematics teachers and 32 PhD degrees). More than 100 alumni participated in the event, which in the meantime has become a permanent institution. The lecturers of the department took the opportunity to say goodbye to their former students during the informal get-together in the Mensa. Especially first experiences in professional life – which some alumni have already made – were met with high interest.As usually, the celebration was organized by the team of the Graduate School „Mathematics as a Key Technology“ and was presented by Professor Dr. Wolfram Decker (AG Algebra, Geometry and Computer Algebra). Professor Violeta Dinescu, guest speaker, showed the connection between music and mathematics. In his review, Professor Dr. René Pinnau, dean, drew a positive conclusion for the year, but also sounded a note of caution that this success gives no reason to sit back and relax. Achieving the top position in the CHE ranking of all German mathematics departments is only possible with high performance of everybody involved. Awards such as the

“Landesverdienstorden” for Professor Dr. Prätzel-Wolters or the “Advanced Grant of the European Research Council” for Professor Dr. Gunter Malle are not only appreciating their extraordinary achievements but should also be understood as a benchmark for the future. The Landesbank Baden-Württemberg has awarded Elisabeth Leoff for the best thesis in Financial Mathematics. Each year, the department donates prizes for outstanding achievements in the course of studies as well as special commitment. These prizes do not only appreciate the candidates, but also recognise the successful work and the contributions of all the other alumni. The prize winners of the academic year 2011/12 are Cornelia Rottner, Elisabeth Schulte und Anna Lena Winstel.Tradition also means retrospection from the students’ point of view. In her review Miss Winstel held a positive summary. She gave sincere thanks to everybody at the department for the excellent mentoring, especially to Dr. Christoph Lossen for his tireless dedication. She attested him that he obviously knows each student by name and offers an excellent student advisory service.The Hubert Groß Quartett with Helmut Engelhard (saxophone), Michael Lakatos (drums), Johannes Schädlich (bass) and Hubert Groß (guitar) played groovy jazz music and contributed to a ceremonial atmosphere of the event. All alumni sang the traditional latin student song “Gaudeamus Igitur” at the end of the celebration. Afterwards everybody went to the Mensa, where the team of Mr. Hammerschmidt and Mr. Harter provided a delicious catering.

Winter Term

The winter term started on October 15th. 2390 new students registered at our university. Most of them have found a place to live, but there are still several hundredlooking for an apartment. The dormitories run by the university are filled. Remember the ‘red building’ in Trippstadter Strasse? It was renovated. Now the facade has a new look: black and red. The installed insulation shall help to save energy.

Extension of Building 46

Due to the increasing high number of students the university is in need of more rooms for lectures. Therefore an addition was built to building 46, opposite the entrance and bicycle-space of our building 48. Two seminar rooms seating 46 and 54 students were completed in time by the beginning of this term.

Campus Cooking

Starkoch meets Mensaküche: Telekom Campus Cooking für eine Woche in der Mensa. Der Hamburger Sternekoch Kevin von Holt bringt zusammen mit unseren Mensaköchen Abwechslung auf den Speiseplan. ‘Es ist ein Geben und Nehmen’, sagt Küchenchef Gerd Hübner. Dafür brauchen sie mehr Zeit. Kevin von Holt lernt wie er mit Technik und weniger Kraft die großen Löffel schwingt. Er steht an einer Ausgabestelle und hat viel zu tun, denn er will jeden Teller ausgeben, natürlich mit perfekter Dekoration. Es gibt z.B. Kalbsbratwurst in Currybutter, Hähnchenkeule in Kräuter-Ayransauce oder Gewürz Kebab vom Lamm und Kalb. So kommt jeder Student auf seinen Geschmack. Nebenbei bietet Telekom günstige Studententarife an.

Welcome to Frau Karin Assahli, who has just started her employment at the Grad-uate School “Mathematics as a Key Technology” mid of November 2012. She fills in for Jessica Borsche during her maternity leave. In this position she will be involved in the Graduate School’s administration as well as assisting foreign students, master & PhD students with formalities and applications, e.g. scholarships.We are looking forward to a good cooperation.

Humbergturm - Adventskerze

Ein ganzer Turm wird zur riesigen Advents-kerze: Der Humbergturm mit seinen 40 m Höhe ist in weihnachtliches Licht gehüllt. Der Turm ist mehr als 100 Jahre alt, Strom gibt es nicht. Eine Beleuchtungsfirma von Kaiserslautern hat 11 Lichtkanonen bauen lassen und in luftiger Höhe montiert. Es sind LEDs, die sehr effizient sind und 2/3 weniger Strom brauchen als normale Leuchten. 775 years of Berlin

Who would not like to visit Berlin? It is multicultural and people from all over the world shape the city and have made it a metropolis known on all continents through its eight centuries.The 775th anniversary of Berlin traces back to the first documented mention of Berlin’s twin city Cölln on 28 October, 1237. A parchment with seven seals attests to an act of law between the Bishop and the Ascanian Margraves of Brandenburg. Berlin’s actual beginnings lie assuredly in medieval darkness. After the spectacular excavations of recent years, the question of Berlin’s actual age presents itself. What is sure is that the historical origin of Berlin took place in the thirteenth century – from the first settlement presumably already before 1200 to the order of the Margraves in 1307 to unify the Berlin-Cölln double settlement and fortify a city wall. 775 years is not a round number, but this is still a special birthday. For the first time, the whole city can look back at its history, free from constraining ideologies.

News on the Shopping Mall

Currently heavy discussions came up thinking of a name for the planned shopping mall. The investor decided on ‘K in Lautern’. This caused a great angry reaction of people criticizing that it isn’t a well sounding name such as, for example, Kaiser-Galerie, Pfalz-Galerie, Casimir-Galerie, Barbarossa-Galerie... . ‘The mall shall be a magnet for shopping and needs a name with a magnet function’, says the manager of the commerce association. Even the AStA of our university had launched a naming competition favoring ‘Fritz-Walter-Mall’, then ‘Staufer’ and last ‘Barbarossa-Center’.You are welcome to give us your opinion about the name ‘K in Lautern’.

Study Abroad

Ich bin Marion und absolviere derzeit ein Auslandssemester in Bordeaux im Süd-westen Frankreichs. Im folgenden Er-fahrungsbericht möchte ich euch ein wenig meine Eindrücke von hier schildern.Ich bin nun seit 2 Monaten in Bordeaux und habe mich mittlerweile gut eingelebt. Ich bin an einer Ingenieursschule gelandet, diese sind in Frankreich deutlich besser ange-sehen als die Universitäten. Aber man merkt deutlich den Unterschied zwischen Uni & Schule, in jeder Vorlesung ist An-wesenheitspflicht und man hat viel weni-ger Wahlmöglichkeiten bei den Kursen. Zusätzlich zu den Mathe-, Physik- und In-formatikvorlesungen und –übungen ist hier auch ein Englisch-Kurs mit abschließen-dem Test (der bestanden werden muss, um das Diplom zu erhalten) und ein weiterer Sprachkurs Teil des Ingenieursdiploms. Außerdem muss man einen Management-Kurs belegen, das hat mich doch sehr überrascht. Ich habe mich jedoch vor dem Management-Kurs gedrückt da ich mein Studium ja nicht hier beenden möchte. Ins-gesamt ist der Studiengang etwas an-ders orientiert, er ist noch angewandter als die „Technomathe“ bei uns. Anstatt Haus-übungen gibt es viele Präsenzübungen und praktische Arbeiten, mündliche Prüfungen gibt es hier leider gar nicht.Entgegen meiner ursprünglichen Erwar-tung habe ich keine anderen deutschen Studenten kennengelernt, ich habe nicht mal zu anderen Erasmus-Studenten Kon-takt. Dadurch bin ich gezwungen, immer französisch zu reden, was sich auf meine Sprachkenntnisse doch ganz deutlich auswirkt (sogar wenn ich deutsch rede streue ich manchmal französische Wörter mit ein und merke das erst später, hoffentlich verschwindet das wieder). Nachdem die Kommunikation anfangs hauptsächlich aus Erklärungen von mir unbekannten Worten bestand, kann ich mich mittlerweile doch

ganz gut unterhalten, auch wenn ich nichtjedes Detail verstehe. In meinem Studien-gang bin ich die einzige Austauschstu-dentin, die meisten anderen Austausch-studenten an meiner Schule kommen aus Argentinien, Brasilien und Marokko. Bevor ich kam hatte ich noch Zweifel, aber mitlerweile habe ich das Gefühl, dass Aus-tauschstudenten hier echt gerne gesehen sind. Es gibt sogar einen von Studenten organisierten Club an der Schule, der nur dafür da ist, die internationalen Stu-denten zu empfangen und zu betreuen. Man bekommt, wenn man möchte, schon bevor man hier ankommt einen „parrain“, also einen Paten, zugeteilt, den man bei Problemen jederzeit fragen kann. Sogareinige Professoren haben mir ihre Hilfe bei Sprachproblemen angeboten, und meine Tischnachbarn erklären mir immer alles ganz geduldig, das ist sehr nett.Auch mit meiner Wohnung hatte ich Glück, ich habe ein WG-Zimmer in einem reno-vierten Wohnheim direkt an der Straßen-bahn-Haltestelle zugewiesen bekommen. Meine Mitbewohnerinnen, eine brasil-ianische Austauschstudentin und zwei Französinnen, sind echt nett. Zusätzlich zur französischen Kultur (Frankreich hat doch mehr zu bieten als Baguette und Käse) lerne ich durch meine marokkanischen Nachbarn auch immer mehr über deren Lebensweise, vor allem marokkanisches Essen kenne ich jetzt.Insgesamt gefällt es mir hier so gut, dass ich meinen anfänglich für ein Semester geplanten Aufenthalt gerne auf ein ganzes Jahr ausdehnen würde und ich rate jedem, wenn möglich ein Auslandssemester zu absolvieren!Liebe Grüße, Marion Pfirsching

6. DEUTSCH-ECKE

Mandelspitter

200 Gramm Mandelstifte200 Gramm Schokolade (Vollmilch, Zart- bitter oder Nougat)1 Teelöffel Butter

Ein großes Stück Backpapier auf den Tisch legen. Schokolade in eine Metallschüssel geben und in einen halb gefüllten, großen Topf mit Wasser auf den Ofen stellen. Wasser langsam erhitzen. Die Schokolade beginnt zu schmelzen. Bitte umrühren. Zwei Dinge sind wichtig: Auf gar keinen Fall darf von dem Wasser in die Schokolade tropfen und die Schokolade darf nicht zu heiß werden, sonst verbrennt sie.Die Mandelstifte mit der Butter in eine Pfanne geben. Je nach Geschmack kann man etwas Zimt, Koriander oder Lebkuchengewürz dazu geben. Bei mittlerer Hitze rösten, bis sie anfangen etwas Farbe zu bekommen. Die Mandeln kommen dann in die Schüssel mit der Schokolade. Mit einem Löffel alles durchrühren und aus dieser Masse kleine Hügel aufs Backpapier setzen. Im Kühlschrank oder an der kalten Luft auskühlen lassen.

Auf Platz drei

Nach acht Siegen und acht Unentschieden verliert der FCK beim letzten Spiel in der Hinrunde gegen FC St. Pauli mit 1:0. Somit bleibt Kaiserslautern auf dem dritten Platz.
