FALL/WINTER 2009 Alumni News I n July, we welcomed the arrival of Stetson’s ninth president, Dr. Wendy B. Libby, and her husband, Dr. Richard M. Libby. We celebrate their drive and determination to take Stetson University to the next level of national prominence, and we look forward to working with President Libby to rethink the many ways we can make the Stetson experience a new and even more exciting, personalized experience for Stetson students and alumni. In late summer, we faced the sad news of the untimely passing of Stetson’s former president and chancellor, Dr. H. Douglas Lee. We are thankful that we were blessed with the time we had with Doug and Margaret Lee last spring, as we celebrated their accomplishments as president and first lady prior to their retirement in May. I am confident he would not want us to focus on his loss, but rather to join together with Dr. Libby to move Stetson forward. Under President Libby’s leadership, we are strategically positioning the university for the future, with exciting new things to come. You can help by being an advocate for Stetson in your hometown, by encouraging prospective students to consider Stetson, and by providing career networking, internship, and job opportunities for current students and alumni. I hope to see you back on campus during Homecoming 2010 (March 18-21). In addition to seeing the many beautiful changes to campus, you won’t want to miss the inauguration of President Libby on Saturday, March 20, at 11 a.m. The inauguration provides an opportunity for the entire Stetson community to celebrate the future. Over the next three months, we will be keeping you informed about the entire Homecoming schedule, and we hope to see you there. Finally, I’m pleased to welcome Kathy Linehan Graf ’74 as the new president-elect of the Alumni Association. Kathy, of Jacksonville, Fla., has served on the Alumni Board of Directors for the past 6½ years and is a great contributor to the life of the university and the Alumni Association. With only a few months into her tenure as Stetson University’snew president, Dr. Wendy B. Libby is making a great effortto meet as many alumni, parents and friends of the Stetson

community as she can. With a message of hope and optimism for thefuture, she has traveled across the state of Florida and as far north asNew York City. The fall events season began with more than 100 guests attending areception for President Libby and her husband, Dr. Richard M. Libby, at the newly renovated Stetson Mansion in DeLand, hosted by Alumni Board District Co-Chairs Kirk Gunby, JD ’91, and Dona Cowden DeMarsh ’90. The Stetson Mansion holds a wealth of history and a connection to the university. It was built in 1886 as a winter home by John B. Stetson, the famed hat manufacturer and philanthropist for whom Stetson University is named. As the evening progressed, the crowd gathered around the pool area to hear Libby speak about her vision for the university and how the Stetson community can help. Afterwards, guests were given guided tours of the mansion. The evening was considered to be a great success and

a perfect way to welcome Libby to local alumni and friends. The beautiful Stetson Mansion is available for private parties and functions. For more information, visit www.stetsonmansion.com. The following week, Libby crossed the I-4 corridor for back-to-back events in St. Petersburg Beach and Tampa. In St. Petersburg Beach, Alumni Board District Chair Ranell Tinsley ’00 welcomed Libby and guests at the Sirata Beach Resort. Also present at the event and providing an update on the College of Law was Dean and Vice President Darby Dickerson. The following evening, Libby traveled to Tampa for an event at the Museum of Science and Industry, hosted by District Co-Chair John Conrad ’78, JD ’80. Both events further solidified the vision of “One University” that Libby has for Stetson’s four campuses. In an early October trip to Tallahassee to meet with other presidents from the Independent Colleges and Universities of Florida (ICUF), President Libby met with three of Stetson’s nine alumni who currently serve in the Florida Legislature. While there, she also enjoyed a dinner meeting with several Tallahassee area alumni and family members.

President Libby then made her way north to the National Hockey League Headquarters in New York City where College of Arts & Sciences Board Member Jim Haskins ’88, vice president of Consumer Products Marketing for the NHL, presented Libby with her very own New York Rangers jersey. The event drew alumni and friends from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Only two days after returning from New York, Dr. Libby headed to Jacksonville for an event at the University Club hosted by Alumni Board President-Elect Kathy Linehan Graf ’76 and District Co-Chair Bill Laird ’99. This event was well attended by alumni and current parents sharing their stories of their Stetson experience. Mike and Kathryn Jacobsen, parents of Micah ’12, a sophomore transfer student and Hatter golf player, shared how they prepared a banner that was displayed on I-95 to congratulate the Men’s Golf team on its season-opening win in North Carolina. In late October, Dr. Libby met alumni, parents and friends at the Country Club of Orlando at an event hosted by Alumni Board members Ron Piccolo ’93 and Laurie Harlan Cheek ’02. President Libby gave a university update, and those attending heard about new ways to get involved.

Other Hatter Events:

Laura Bernal ’93 and Steve Urich ’91, district co-chairs for Broward County, held their first event at Color Me Mine in Davie. Roughly 20 Hatters gathered to get creative, paint pottery and enjoy each other’s company. Pictured above is Ty Whitney ’89 with daughter Kailey and friend.

Charles Huthmaker ’92, former Stetson Crew coach and current director of the Norwalk River Rowing Association, hosted alumni, students and parents for a day on the river in Connecticut. “What It’s Like to Be...”

...Head of Marketing, Media and Corporate Relations for the Royal Albert Hallwith Michelle “Elle” Aland ’90 (London, England)

...Head Football Coach at Apopka High Schoolwith Rick Darlington ’87 (Apopka, Fla.)

How did you end up where you are now? I graduated with a management degree from Stetson, worked for Delta Sigma Phi as a national consultant in the spring of 1989, and while traveling around the country, I prayed that God would show me a career I would love through which I could have an impact on others’ lives. He led me into coaching. I was an assistant coach for five years at my alma mater, Lakeland High School, and have been head coach at Apopka High School since then.

What special skills does it take to do what you do? Football knowledge and love of working with young people. Parents are different from when I grew up; much more lax and coddling. Discipline and toughness are foreign to many folks. We are somewhat “old school” in the way we deal with youngsters, but we are trying to turn them into MEN, not allow them to remain boys.

What’s a good day like on the job? Every day is a good day!

What’s a hard day like on the job? Working with youngsters is always a blessing. After a loss, we get back to work on Monday, figure out why we lost and learn from it. Fortunately, we don’t lose too many!

What do you find most satisfying in your job? On the field, winning. Off the field, watching boys grow into men. The character qualities we seek to build into our players—discipline, toughness, selflessness, humility, integrity, perseverance, etc.—are those that make a good man. Some of the students who grow to appreciate our

methods later are ones who did not make it, due to discipline issues. It is like the light came on after it was too late. But it takes about 10 years for them to really understand what the whole experience meant, once they are responsible for bills and a family and it’s not play time anymore. Hopefully, their time with us will make each of them a better father, husband and citizen in the years ahead. I know that high school football did that for me.

How did your Stetson education contribute to your career? My experience with Delta Sigma Phi was most beneficial for learning to work with others, serve the community and take pride in being successful.

Describe an on-the-job magical moment: We won the 6A State title in 2001 against Miami Northwestern. It was in the Showtime documentary, Year of the Bull. I guess we ruined their fairy tale….

How did you end up where you are now? I have always chosen jobs in fields that I am passionate about, so my jobs have ranged from encouraging kids to participate in sports for the NHL to raising funds for the environment for the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. When I heard that someone was leaving this role at the Albert Hall, I called the recruiter every month for five months until they were ready to interview candidates. I was then up against a field of applicants from the U.K. and Europe but I knew it was the perfect role for me.

What special skills does it take to do what you do? Communication skills, both verbal and written, are necessary to succeed in my job. Creativity and imagination are also important as I need to create new programs for a historic 1851 venue so I need to have an entrepreneurial mind and courageous spirit in some instances.

What’s a good day like on the job? I love the diversity of my role: one moment I am writing a press release for Roger Daltrey of the Who for Teenage Cancer Trust concerts, then

I am selecting a marketing image of a ballerina for Swan Lake, then I am meeting with my sponsor partner Moet Chandon to discuss which vintage champagne to serve at an event. So I have to do many things at once for a world-class audience in a venue that hosts a variety of 350 shows a year from rock to pop to Masters Tennis to classical music to Cirque du Soleil.

What do you find most satisfying in your job? As a not-for-profit organization, we involve over 100,000 children in programs that expose them to the arts and sciences. Also, there is usually a moment during a show that I look around the auditorium and see how happy people are, and I feel proud to have contributed in some way to the event.

How did your Stetson education contribute to your career? I received a diverse liberal arts education with a major in English Literature and minors in Spanish and Psychology. My winter term trips to Spain and to New York and the United Nations helped me experience world views and see a new perspective for myself which has been extremely helpful while living overseas for nine years now. Dr. Wayne T. Bailey,

...a Science Writer at the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquariumwith Hayley Rutger ’07 (Sarasota, Fla.)

...Head of Marketing, Media and Corporate Relations for the Royal Albert Hall

How did you end up where you are now? I studied Biology at Stetson University with a minor in English, then I attended a Science Communication graduate program at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Some of my coolest science writing internships included National Geographic and the Smithsonian National Zoo. Ultimately, I got here by being torn between a love of nature and a love of writing. My job is to make sure the public and the media get an accurate (and exciting) picture of what’s going on at Mote, to answer questions—sometimes on camera—and to translate the many science, education and other projects at Mote into clear and fun writing.

What special skills does it take to do what you do? One major skill—which I’m still mastering—includes thinking like a scientist or another Mote employee while also thinking like a journalist. Also, managing my time is important. I try to keep in step with journalists’ deadlines and to prioritize carefully. Lots of questions get thrown my way, and often I don’t know the answers off the top of my head. Just remembering to answer everyone’s questions requires a lot of care. I’m developing a keener memory from doing this job. I try to remember what’s going on in many different parts of Mote and what’s happening when. That way, when the local news calls and says: “Hey, what’s going on at Mote?” I will, I hope, have a story to tell them.

What do you find most satisfying in your job? It’s a toss-up: 1) I get to keep on top of the fascinating doings of science educators, aquarists and marine scientists whose areas of expertise include things like satellite tracking of sea turtles, research on manatee hearing, sustainable fish farming and growing corals. 2) The style of writing I get to use involves trying to say as much as I can in a small amount of space, while being clever if possible. 3) Most of the media and public I come into contact with are excited about what’s going on at Mote. We share that in common.

How did your Stetson education contribute to your career? Great science professors + great English professors = great hybrid career

path for me. I wanted to use the right-brained abilities that English courses fostered but be around scientists and science educators, whom I think are among the world’s most useful people. My science professors made everything interesting—even statistics, despite my lack of natural talent for math—and my English professors helped my creativity thrive...plus, a course in nature writing was a helpful catalyst.

Describe an on-the-job magical moment I was in the field with Mote scientists a few times this past summer to get a better feel for what they do. When our scientists studied a whopping group of whale sharks in Mexico, I wrote a press release. When we took in a rescued sea turtle that was originally ID-tagged by Mote in 1988, I brought film crews to see her. I joined sea turtle researchers one night on the beach, where they put satellite tracking tags on nesting sea turtles. I saw turtles enter their trance-like nesting state, but the coolest part came when a researcher was sticking the tag on one turtle’s shell. Someone ran a finger along the shell, and it left a glowing blue trail. The light came from bioluminescent plankton, but let’s just say it was magic.

Dr. John Pearson, and Dr. Nancy Vosburg were fantastic instructors for me! It was special to have my sister Heather ’93 also attend, and my Stetson and Tri Delta friendships continue via e-mail so it is a small world after all.

Describe an on-the-job magical moment: It’s impossible to pick one. There was a point during Tony Bennett’s 80th birthday concert when he said, “Turn everything off, I want to sing a cappella like we used to do.” Everyone held their breath in awe of an old style performer who could create magic without mixers or lip syncing or back ups. It was an honor meeting Lady Margaret Thatcher at the beautiful home of American Ambassador Tuttle. Upon learning where I had worked, Lady Thatcher said to me: “Kew and Albert Hall are my two favorite places in the Empire, I am sure you will be a huge success here.” It was magical seeing Gustavo Dudamel perform at the BBC Proms with the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra, which is comprised of street children who travel around the world through a music program and samba with their instruments when they play. Their music has saved their lives so they play with a joy and passion that

courses through the score and changes you when you hear it. I have been blessed to witness amazing things through my job. All my life experiences have brought me here, so I send a huge thank you to the Stetson University community for the great foundation that I received.

GET INVOLVED!Stetson University is a special place that empowers talented, enthusiastic people. You know it, and your Alumni Association knows it.

As Hatters, there’s a lot Stetson alumni can achieve by sticking together—from assisting with job placement, to sharing experiences, to simply enjoying one another’s company; from guiding current students to find their futures, to helping prospective students discover all the Stetson family has to offer them.

The livelihood of the Stetson University community is in the hands of each and every alumnus/a, and you have the power to help unite, enrich, strengthen and grow your community. But then, would you expect any less from a Hatter? We certainly wouldn’t. Go ahead: get involved!

Hatters are everywhere. If you need proof, check out our interactive

alumni maps at www.stetson.edu/alumni, located under the Community menu. You can browse the numbers by country,

state or county and take in a view of Florida, the United States or the entire world. And with Alumni Board members currently representing 19 states and 39 counties in Florida, the Stetson University Alumni Association’s reach is widespread.

The Alumni Board’s district chairs are always looking for additional volunteers to serve on committees in their respective territories. If you enjoy planning events, talking about your Stetson experience and meeting other Hatters in your area, joining a district committee would be the ideal way to give back to your alma mater and have fun at the same time. Is there a fun activity, location or happening in your area that you’d like to share with fellow alumni? You can start the ball rolling easily: If your district has a representative on the Alumni Board, simply contact them with your idea. If not, contact the Office of Alumni Relations. We’ll co-coordinate and promote your event—no matter how large or small the alumni population of the area.

Charles Huthmaker ’92, former Stetson Crew coach and current director of the Norwalk River Rowing Association, thought it would be great to invite fellow Connecticut Hatters out for a summer day on the river. He contacted the Alumni Office. We sent out the invites. You can now see the result of his brainchild in the Alumni Events roundup on page 19.

Charles Sano ’01, special events coordinator for the Florida Marlins, wanted to hold a Stetson Night at Dolphin Stadium back in 2006. Through the co-coordination of Alumni Board South Florida Regional Chair Karen Schmitt Roberts ’80 and District Chair for Dade and Monroe Counties Bob Welbon ’75, Stetson alumni, parents, students and

GETLOCAL!

friends have now enjoyed viewing Marlins games together for four years running.

Laura Bernal ’93 and Steve Urich ’91, district co-chairs for Broward County, welcomed Stetson families to a pottery painting establishment called Color Me Mine in Davie, Fla. Jennifer Johnson Carr ’95, District Chair for Missouri, united Hatters for a wine tasting at Bella Vita Wines in Rock Hill, Mo. Tracy Richards Morency ’84, district chair for Charlotte and Lee counties won last year’s District Service Award for leading her district’s volunteers to log in more than 400 hours recruiting at college fairs, urging alumni to participate in Hatternet, sponsoring a summmer Off-to-School Party for incoming students, and hosting the Southwest Florida Golf Tournament that raised almost $4,000 for the Annual Fund for scholarships.

It’s that easy to get Hatters together, and it’s that easy to make a difference in the Stetson community. To turn your great idea into a successful

event, get in touch with your district chair by visiting www.stetson.edu/alumni, and select “Your District” from the Get Involved menu. If you don’t have a District representative yet, contact the Office of Alumni Relations directly at [email protected]. Maybe you’re precisely the representaive your district’s been waiting for!

Remarkable Students with Remarkable Need

Oh, the stories they can tell…every week we hear more stories from students about the struggles they and their families are facing for the student to remain enrolled at

Stetson. Here are three stories and how you can help.

Robert is a first generation student who was raised by a single mom. His mother struggles to support the family financially, yet was adamant that she wanted her son to get the best education possible. They are trying to find any way possible to keep Robert at Stetson, but they have been denied a Federal parent loan and have no ability to co-sign for a private loan. Robert has become involved in a large number of activities on campus and is a stellar member of our community. All gifts to the Annual Fund benefit needy students like Robert.

Barbara is trying to finish her senior year at Stetson and graduate with her classmates. Her mother lost her mortgage company in 2008 and is struggling to make ends meet and help her daughter finish her senior year. They have described their situation as a complete “financial meltdown.” All gifts to the Annual Fund benefit needy students like Barbara.

Donna is a junior at Stetson who has a 3.3 GPA. Her mom was recently laid off from her administrative assistant position and still tries to care for Donna’s elderly grandfather and her special needs brother. She has attempted to secure various sources of funding, but because of the credit market crunch, her applications for private financing have been denied. All gifts to the Annual Fund benefit needy students like Donna.

These remarkable students and many more of their classmates have remarkable need. Will you help them with a gift to the Annual Fund? A gift from you can make a difference to these and other Stetson students. To give, go on-line to www.stetson.edu/give; or mail a check to Stetson University, 421 N. Woodland Blvd., Unit 8286, DeLand, FL 32723.
