Journal and our exploration of “passions.” In the pages that

follow, you will meet lots of fascinating individuals who are

doing what they love best.

I’ve been fortunate in my life to pursue many passions –

research, teaching, cars, running (three miles a day) and skiing,

to name a few. But my greatest passion is my wife and best

friend, Toby. We’ve been married for 28 marvelous years and

have raised five children together. Today, as always, my time

with her is the most precious – and most energizing – of every

day. She is rarely away from my side.

At Ohio Northern, we try to inspire students to discover new

passions and pursue existing passions, both in and outside the

classroom. They can study pharmacy and still perform with

the orchestra and serve as a resident assistant. Alternatively,

they can excel in the engineering field while starring in theatre

productions or building houses for Habitat for Humanity.

Our small campus environment, which offers high-quality

opportunities and experiences along with individualized

attention and support, enables each student to reach for his or

her dreams.

I wish you success in the continued pursuit of your life’s

passions – whatever they may be and wherever they may take

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but numbers speak of magnitude. They speak of quantity, dimension and distance.

There’s power in numbers. How strong? How far? How many?

As it applies to Ohio Northern alumni, the answer to that last question is “more than 28,000.” At last count, there are 11,041 from the College of Arts & Sciences, 2,434 from Business Administration, 3,606 from Engineering, 4,812 from Law, and 5,674 from Pharmacy. We count thousands of Northern alumni all over the world, each with a story to tell.

What follows are a few of these stories. Stories of adventure, family, science and fame. The numbers could speak for themselves, but where’s the fun in that?

“Simple is best. Hang interesting characters from a very simple plot,” he advised the students. “Write about yourself, something funny, a fantasy you have. Get stuck and then try to figure out what’s wrong.”

A couple more for the mAntleWhile on campus, Peterson also received two pieces of ONU-related hardware. First, he was honored by the College of Engineering with the inaugural T.J. Smull College of Engineering Distinguished Alumni Award.

“I was very honored to receive this award because engineering propelled me to where I am today,” he said. “I was overcome with emotion receiving such an award, and a lot of it for me was seeing my professors and very good friends from ONU. It was very emotional and an honor.”

An oscAr winner comes home

March 15, Bob Peterson, BSME ’83, the award-winning writer and director

of Pixar’s 2009 Up, returned to Ada to deliver the 2010 Spotts Lecture.

“It’s emotional for me to be back here,” Peterson told the packed crowd inside the ONU Sports Center. “This is my school, this is Ohio Northern. My friends are here, my mom is here,” he said, gesturing to the front row.

During his lecture, titled “How to fly your House: My Pixar Adventure,” Peterson discussed his time at Northern studying the emerging computer animation field to Pixar and his eventual development into a key player at Pixar Animation Studios.

Peterson’s Spotts Lecture capped a busy day on campus. Faced with an incredibly tight schedule and an illness that he claims he caught during the 2010 Academy

Award ceremony (“George Clooney walked by me and coughed, so I think I have George Clooney’s cold”), Peterson spent the day advising students, taking tours and re-connecting with old friends and fraternity brothers.

He also conducted two master classes, one for engineering students titled “The Pixar Animation Pipeline” and a second for writing students titled “Writing in the Pixar Pipeline.”

Peterson catered these master classes to his specific audiences. The engineers were treated to a highly technical discussion on the mechanics of computer animation. Terms like “inverse kinematics,” “particle simulation” and “rigging” were tossed around as if you heard them every day at the dinner table.

For the English students, Peterson divulged some of his obviously successful tips for script development. He discussed talismans, plot devices, themes, and the importance of flawed main characters. He also dished out plenty of advice.

an undergraduate, this house was torn down in 2006. The brick was affixed to a glass plaque inscribed with the words, “Bricks are the balloons ready to take flight with dreams.”

Clearly moved by the presentation, Peterson vowed to return the brick to campus should a new Phi Kappa Theta house be built.

Art And science on the tundrASo how does a mechanical engineer find his way to Hollywood, directing movies and winning Oscars?

“My journey started here at Ohio Northern,” Peterson explains.

A native of Wooster, Ohio, Peterson was attracted by the

fact that, although ONU is a small school, it still has renowned Colleges of Pharmacy, Law and Engineering.

“I visited campus, and I realized that what a very unique place this is,” he says. “It offered engineering, law, pharmacy and all these amazing programs in a small-school environment.”

While at Northern, Peterson followed a nontraditional path not likely followed by most engineering students. While taking courses in heat transfer and thermodynamics, he also found time for things that interested him. For example, he worked on a weekly comic strip for The Northern Review called “For Pete’s Sake.”

“It was kind of funny, and I worked engineering stuff into it as well,” he remembers. “I poked fun of this and that.”

And while other students developed “test tube oscillators” as senior projects, Peterson created an animatronic model of his own head.

“I was a bit of a different engineer in that I was interested in a few other things. I did a little bit of everything at Ohio Northern. I took advantage of things that were here.”

He saw engineering as a gateway to most any career, a degree that can act as a springboard into many things. “Engineering

is a great base for anything. If you have interests on the side – music, literature, botany, biology – all of these things can be meshed with a core engineering background.”

Peterson’s future career became very clear with the help of Dr. Michael Rider, BSME ’75, professor of mechanical engineering.

“Dr. Rider taught a computer graphics course here back when no one else was teaching that. 1981, that’s the infancy of computer animation. Toy Story was 14 years off.”

Peterson discovered this computer animation class and its subject matter to be the perfect confluence of the arts and sciences, of creativity and precision.

“When I sat in that class, I knew that’s what I wanted to do,” he said. “My interest in science by day was in my engineering classes, and then by night I would be drawing a cartoon, and the two of those things came together and helped my career.”

With Rider’s recommendation, Peterson enrolled at Purdue University to work on a master’s degree in mechanical engineering. While there, he continued with cartooning, this time with a daily strip called “Loco Motives.”

“This was a continuation of what I started at ONU,” Peterson said. “I was able to put out a cartoon – good or bad – in front of 40,000 people, and every day I got feedback. That’s one thing that I’ve always thought was valuable: When you’re starting out, do something a lot, get it out in front of people and get feedback.”

the only wAy is upAfter graduating from Purdue, Peterson traveled to the West Coast, taking a job with Wavefront Productions, teaching others how to operate computer animation software. This led to a job with Resn8 Productions, which in turn brought Peterson to Pixar in 1994.

“My first job was animating a TV commercial for cereal: flakes and nuts dancing out of a box. So that’s my first Pixar experience,” he said.

Although his Pixar career started small, Peterson had his eye on bigger things. He was particularly intrigued with a new project on Pixar’s drawing board: Toy Story.

“Across the hall, they were making this new, never-before-done movie, Toy Story, the first computer-animated film. I really wanted to jump on that, and eventually I got a chance. So on Toy Story, I worked in the layout and animation department. I did about 10 shots involving Sid the bad kid.”

From there, Peterson’s responsibilities grew. For A Bug’s Life, he moved into the story department, drawing storyboards during the script’s development. With Toy Story 2, he worked as a story artist. He then moved on to Monsters, Inc. as the story supervisor. He next co-wrote the screenplay for Finding Nemo with Andrew Stanton, his first foray into scriptwriting. These experiences culminated with Up, for which Peterson was the co-director and screenwriter.

Up went on to win the 2010 Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film and the 2010 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film.

In addition to his story work, Peterson has voiced several of Pixar’s memorable animated characters: the aged chess-playing hero of Geri’s Game, paperwork-obsessed slug-woman Roz in Monsters, Inc., and the tuneful teacher Mr. Ray in Finding Nemo. He also lends his voice talents to Up for the canine characters of Dug and Alpha.

A fine meshJust before leaving Ada after his whirlwind campus visit, Peterson offered one last piece of advice for the ONU community. “Make sure you have a degree that is marketable, one that can help you move forward, but also work into that degree your interests. I would say, mesh your vocation with your avocation, meaning, the thing that you find yourself doing as a hobby, sometimes can be worked into the thing that you’ve chosen.”

For Peterson, meshing his vocation with his avocation has worked out extremely well.

Dick Shanely, BSEd ’54, BSPh ’55, has lost count of the number of relatives who have attended Ohio Northern University. In a tradition that dates back five generations to his grandfather, James Shopshire, in the 19th century, Dick’s parents, two of his children, two grandchildren, and assorted aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws too numerous to track all proudly claim Northern as their alma mater. “Ohio Northern holds a huge place in my Dad’s heart,” says Pam (Shanely) Hampson, BSPh ’77, Dick’s daughter. “He is so proud of our family’s deep ties to the University.”

When he was a teenager, Dick decided to follow in the footsteps of his parents, Fred Shanely, BSEE ’25, and Edith (Hageman) Shanely Miller, BSEd ’50, and enroll at Northern. He dreamed of playing on the basketball team, and he planned to become a family doctor. But then the unthinkable happened. In the fall

one universityhad enrolled after World War II. “I was born during this time. My Dad likes to joke that I was born in pharmacy school,” says Pam, with a laugh. (She ended up attending the Raabe College of Pharmacy, just like her Dad.)After graduation, Dick embarked on a long and fruitful career as a pharmacist. He owned two community drugstores – one in Piqua, Ohio, and another in Covington, Ohio – where he often mentored Ohio Northern pharmacy interns. He also worked in hospital pharmacy and was a technology consultant. “My Dad is a people person,” says Pam. “I think everybody who ever worked with him, liked him.”

Two of Dick’s three children, Pam and Barb (Shanely) Ray, BA ’78, kept with the family tradition and graduated from Northern. They both met their spouses – J. Jay Hampson, BA ’73, JD ’76, Hon. D. ’98, and David Ray, JD ’80 – at Northern. Dick’s youngest daughter, Kathy, served as a

secretary in the Pettit College of Law for one year. Two of Dick’s grandchildren, Jacob Shanely Ray, JD ’09, and Brent Hampson, a senior sport management major from Lancaster, Ohio, became the family’s fifth generation of Polar Bears. Brent, who shares his grandfather’s birthday, blue eyes and determination, played on ONU’s basketball team. “In a way, Brent has fulfilled that dream for my Dad who wasn’t able to play,” says Pam.

Ohio Northern has played a large role in shaping the lives of her family members, says Pam. Many of her relatives credit the University with their successful careers, their friendships and even their spouses. “The campus draws you in, and you become part of a larger family,” she adds. “When you visit campus, even after being away for awhile, it feels like coming home.”

of his senior year in high school, he contracted polio. In an instant, his future plans were shattered.“His doctor told him he would never walk again,” says Pam. “But my Dad is not a quitter, he has always been a fighter, and that spring he walked across the stage to receive his high school diploma.”

Amazingly, Dick overcame the many physical limitations caused by his debilitating disease. He arrived on campus as planned in fall 1948. However, he was unable to play basketball, and he changed his career course, getting a degree in education and then pharmacy.

Dick has fond memories of his student days, especially of living in Presser Village as a newlywed with his wife, Carolyn. Presser Village was a collection of house trailers that Northern had purchased from war surplus to accommodate the influx of married GIs and their wives who

Evan Sterling, BA ’07, BS ’07, and Shannon Busby, BS ’07, aren’t just dreamers, they’re doers. Their intrepid spirits led this boyfriend-girlfriend team on an adventure of a lifetime – a yearlong cycling tour through the breathtaking countryside of New Zealand. When their trip ends next fall, they will have biked approximately 4,000 miles.

“Both of us understand that life is all about experiences. If you want something good to happen in your life, then you have to make it happen,” says Busby.

While sightseeing is a pleasurable part of the couple’s journey, it isn’t their primary focus. They are on a quest to learn everything they can about organic agriculture. Through a program called “WWOOFing” (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms), they are gaining hands-on experience at organic farms along their path.

“Our main goal is to learn how to live in a sustainable and self-sufficient manner,” explained Busby. “The Kiwi people are very in-tune with their land. Everyone we come across,

even if they aren’t a farmer, seems to understand the rhythms of nature. They know where their food comes from, and they know how weather patterns form.”

The couple stays at each farm for one to two weeks before bicycling to the next one. Room and board are provided in exchange for four hours of volunteer work per day. “It has been eye-opening for us to learn more about sustainable agriculture and how it is possible to support yourself and your family through better practices,” says Sterling. “We’ve worked on organic dairy farms, grain farms and nut orchards. We’ve extracted honey from bees’ hives, collected free-range organic eggs, and milked goats for house milk and cheese.”

Sterling and Busby’s journey began in October 2009 in Auckland, New Zealand, and will end in October 2010. The timing for the trip was ideal. Sterling had just completed a two-year teaching commitment in Atlanta, Ga., with Teach For America, and Busby had wrapped up two years of seasonal field biology work. Still, it wasn’t easy to say goodbye to friends and family for more than a year.

“It’s a bit scary not to have a steady income or home base,” admits Sterling. “But in exchange, we are learning about other cultures and ways of life, and that is priceless.” As the couple bicycles from farm to farm, they “freedom camp” along the roadside or find a host through an online cycling community who is willing to accommodate them for free for a night or two. They eat inexpensive carbohydrate-rich foods on the road, including rolled oats, pasta, bread, honey, avocadoes and fresh fruit. “Remaining flexible is challenging,” says Busby. “It’s easy to get stressed out about things out of our control, like the weather or a lack of WWOOF sites. But we try to remember that we can only control so much and we really are living a dream.” When their adventure ends next fall, the couple plans to return to the U.S. to spend Christmas with their families. After working for a year or so, they will embark on another adventure to Europe, South America or Africa – wherever their fancy and budget take them. “In the long term, we hope to one day find a wonderful chunk of land that

we can call home and establish our own organic farm/garden,” says Sterling. “We know it’s a bit idealistic, but that’s what we do: dream. And, of course, make those dreams come true!”

The Amazing 5 (experiences so far)

Only half way through their venture, Sterling and Busby already have experienced many amazing adventures. Here’s a sampling:

Getting a bike loan

A few weeks into the trip, Sterling realized his racing bike wasn’t up to the task of pulling a trailer up and down mountainous terrain. Through an online network called “Warm Showers,” he found someone who had a spare bike better suited for the riding conditions. “This person just let me borrow the bike, indefinitely, to be able to continue our trip and keep my knees happier! True Kiwi generosity!” says Sterling.

Meeting pioneer man

On the Banks Peninsula out of Christchurch, Sterling and Busby encountered a modern-day pioneer who survives off the land. He lives a simple life in an old caravan and lets the land dictate what he grows and how he grows it. He is completely organic, using no chemical fertilizers, herbicides or insecticides on his homestead. “He is also a wild-foods chef and used all kinds of wild plants and food stuffs in his gourmet-style cooking, which was new and exciting for us,” says Busby.

Building a huge compost pile

While volunteering at “Totaranui,” an organic orchard with 2,000 hazelnut trees, Sterling and Busby spent an extended workday (nine hours!) building a gigantic compost heap of freshly cut grass, wood chips and decaying plant material. “The finished product was a heap about 4 meters long and 1.5 meters tall!” exclaimed Busby. In about three to four months, the compost heap will be ready to use to naturally fertilize the vegetable garden and nut orchard.

Dissecting geese

Even though they are both vegetarians, Sterling and Busby didn’t cringe when they were asked to dissect 14 freshly killed geese while volunteering at the Waihi Bush Organic Farm. The geese were prepared for a feast at a folk music festival that was taking place on the farm. “Bear in mind, neither of us come from a hunting or farming background or eat meat at the moment,” says Sterling. “But we were still willing to try some! After all, it was organic and free-range goose meat.”

Spending two nights in a mental ward

On their way to Wellington, the New Zealand capital, Sterling and Busby found a host family online willing to let them stay in their “own building.” When they arrived at the address, they were confused by the numerous dilapidated buildings and gated 100-acre grounds. “That night we found out from our hosts that the property had been a government-operated mental hospital until very recently,” says Sterling. “The host family was acting as caretakers of the property while the government was trying to sell it to the highest bidder. Our host was wonderful, and the place was actually quite nice, so we stayed for two nights.”

Kenley Shea Monson, BFA ’08, received 150 friend requests on

Facebook in one day – all from people she didn’t know – she knew her career in the entertainment industry was taking off. The messages and requests poured in after she premiered as a singer in the house band for “The Singing Bee,” a popular music game show on Country Music Television (CMT).

“At first, I was flattered, and then I was kind of freaked out,” says Monson, with a laugh. “Eventually I figured out how to use Facebook as a tool to keep fans involved in my career in a way that wasn’t super personal.”

Today, Monson’s Facebook fans number 1,960 and growing. She regularly posts on her page pictures, videos

and updates about the adventures in her life and career. “Facebook is the perfect place for artists to network

and get their stuff out there,” she explains.

Two years ago, Monson graduated from ONU with a musical theatre degree and traded the golden cornfields of Ada for sunny Hollywood, Calif. Working under the name of “Kenley Shea,” she’s

managed to land impressive gigs in an incredibly cut-throat industry. She’s worked with pop artists

Kelly Clarkson and Will.i.am. as well as actors Hugh Jackman and Shia LeBouf. She’s appeared in music videos by alternative rock groups Rise Against, Nickleback and Kings of Leon. And, she’s attained spots in television commercials for Doritos, Lucky Brand Perfume and Axe Body Spray.

While Monson savors opportunities to play the best friend of a pop-music icon or to work with Hugh Jackman as Melanie Griffith’s stand-in, she makes sure to stay grounded. She credits her early success to a combination of hard work, perseverance and faith. When she’s rejected or exhausted, she just pushes harder. “In this industry, you have to have a thick skin and lose the diva attitude,” she says. “I have learned not to make my career the reason that I live or where I place my self-worth, satisfaction or hope, because at the end of the day, it is just a job that helps me pay the bills – although it is quite a fun one.”

Monson is currently writing music and recording her first album in Hollywood and Nashville. “I am so excited about this next step in my career – it’s been a lifelong dream of mine,” she says. The opportunity to record an album arose from her growing popularity on “The Singing Bee.”

Monson adds, however, that she has no desire to become excessively famous. She is happy to continue doing what she’s doing at present: being able to make a living using her craft and the training she received from ONU. “I just want to keep doing what I love, to keep inspiring and imparting creativity onto others,” she says.

Often times, when Dave Billiter, BA ’98, presents at

a professional conference, he’s not only the youngest speaker on the agenda, he’s the only one without a Ph.D. or M.D. after his name. Yet his presentation is the one the audience won’t forget. Because in the complex world of bioinformatics, he distills the scientific jargon and obscure technology into a clear vision that speaks to everyone’s hearts. He stands up and begins his address with these simple words: “We are here today because people are sick.”

Billiter’s passion for finding cures for cancer and other diseases has made him a rising star at one of the nation’s largest biobanks. Just 12 years after graduating from Ohio Northern, Billiter already has a top position as the director of informatics for the Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital (NCH) in Columbus.

Biobanking was recently included in Time magazine’s list of “10 Ideas Changing the World Right Now.” It’s poised to transform the way diseases are diagnosed, treated and prevented. But it’s a complicated subject matter, especially for those not scientifically inclined. “My mom still has no idea what I do,” says Billiter, with a laugh.

Put simply, biobanking is the collection, cataloging, storing and distribution of human tissue samples for research purposes. It may not sound world-changing – and it wasn’t until recently. New and emerging computer technologies make it possible for biobank data to be used in ways unimaginable in the past. For example, biobanking is blazing trails in genomic medicine with software that can combine information about a patient’s genetic makeup along with his or her disease characteristics.

“Health care is experiencing a data explosion,” explains Billiter. “More and more modalities are being created to give researchers new ways to generate and analyze data. This data creates enormous challenges in information technology. This is where I live.”

Indeed, Billiter is deeply immersed in the field of bioinformatics, the technology side of biobanking. His team is charged with overseeing all the technological challenges of

storing, transferring, analyzing, retrieving and securing data associated with biobanking at NCH. They also develop innovative software and hardware solutions to help pathologists, physicians and researchers combine and analyze data in new ways. For example, his team has recently developed informatics methods to detect cancer features in images to aid in disease detection.

When Billiter came on board at NCH, his technology team consisted of just three people. Today, his team is 16 members strong and growing. Their pioneering use of technology has landed the Research Institute at NCH multiple research grants focused on disease diagnosis and treatment.

The Cancer Genome Atlas project is one of the most impressive projects that Billiter’s team is tackling. This federally funded and nationally recognized initiative seeks to unravel the genetics behind 20 common forms of cancer. Children’s Hospital received a $5.5 million grant from the National Cancer Institute to catalog tumor specimens that will be sent from multiple hospitals in the U.S. and other countries. The Cancer Genome Atlas project, ambitious in scope and funding, hopes to make huge inroads in eradicating cancer.

One of Billiter’s favorite projects is the Children’s Oncology Group (COG), an ongoing pediatric cancer program in conjunction with the National Cancer Institute. The mission of COG is to cure and prevent childhood and adolescent cancer through scientific discovery and compassionate care. Billiter’s team oversees billions of data points associated with tumor specimens in the areas of pediatric and adolescent cancers. This data, made available to prestigious research institutes such as the Mayo Clinic and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital, enables many pediatric patients to join clinical trials, an opportunity that dramatically increases their chances of survival.

Billiter, the father of three small children with wife, Tara (Kingsley), BA ’98, is touched and motivated by the stories he hears of children who are battling cancer. “Knowing that I’m doing

something to help a 5-year-old get treated faster and get better faster is why I love my job,” he says.

Rise to success

How does a sports management major end up in the revolutionary field of bioinformatics? Billiter’s career started at a small IT consulting firm. He ended up consulting on a project at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, which led to a full-time job opportunity.

Billiter credits his career success to the well-rounded education he received at Ohio Northern. His B.A. provided him with a solid operations and management background and communication skills that have proved invaluable in the science and research arena.

In the field of bioinformatics, it’s easy to fall into the trap of generating big plans that never get completed or, conversely, getting bogged down with minutia. Billiter knows how to

manage projects and produce results. He remains keenly aware of his team’s underlying mission – helping to save people’s lives – and he never lets them forget it.

Each day, he’s in his element, acting as a bridge between the IT experts and the scientific stakeholders. He’s a problem solver, taskmaster, strategic thinker and organizational guru all in one. The most difficult part of his job, he says, is staying up-to-speed in an environment that is not only complicated, but also evolving almost daily. To keep up, he is always reading and learning. He also recently completed his MBA, and he’s become a certified Project Management Professional.

Although his work can be stressful at times, Billiter feels blessed to have landed his “dream job” – a job that makes a difference. “Knowing that every day we are doing something to potentially save someone’s life is just amazing. The satisfaction I feel when I drive to work each day and when I leave is extremely gratifying, I’ve never felt anything like it,” he says.

A Rich Tradition – 125 Years

In 1885, the Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor, tuition for a quarter at Ohio Northern University was $8, and the Ohio Northern College of Law enrolled students for the first time.

Throughout its history, the College of Law has made a number of notable advancements, including the dedication of the Taggart Law Library, the opening the ONU Legal Clinic in Lima, Ohio, and graduating its first class of LLM students in 2007.

In 2010, the College of Law celebrates its 125th anniversary. To commemorate this landmark event, the law school will host a series of events, distinguished speakers, special dedications, alumni events and symposia.

Despite changes in the economy, political administrations and the legal field, Ohio Northern Law has remained committed to providing personal attention, hands-on skills training and, more recently, an international perspective to the classroom.

Under the leadership of David C. Crago, dean of the College of Law, the college has taken steps to remain competitive with larger schools by adding a concurrent JD/LLM program and a dual degree offered in partnership with the College of Pharmacy. The college has enhanced skills training with new credit requirements and a variety of intensive topic courses that focus on a single legal issue for three

weeks. Additionally, the college has strengthened its international ties with the expansion of the LLM program, internships abroad and an ongoing partnership with the University of Iceland, now in its 50th year.

“I think the program is an excellent opportunity to expose our students to Icelandic culture and the Icelandic people,” says Tristin Kilgallon, a third-year law student and president of ILEP. “When we travel to Iceland, we meet some very important members of Icelandic society: Supreme Court justices, members of Parliament, etc. It is a great experience.

“Likewise, I think when the Icelanders visit Ada, they get to experience what life is like at an American law school,” he continues. “While the visits may be brief, some lasting friendships have been made.”

As part of its 125th anniversary celebration, the College of Law commemorated 50 years of the ILEP with a special trip to Iceland in June 2010.

ONU law graduates tops in Ohio bar exam passage

One hundred percent of Ohio Northern University’s December 2009 law graduates passed Ohio’s February 2010 bar examination on their first attempt, and 86 percent of all ONU law graduates passed. ONU’s Pettit College of Law ranks above all other Ohio law schools in both overall passage rate and the passage rate of first-time takers.

Pettit College of Law Receives PLUS Grant

The Pettit College of Law has received the DiscoverLaw.org Pre-Law Undergraduate Scholars (PLUS) program grant from the Law School Admissions Council.

ONU, one of three law schools nationwide to receive the grant, was selected based on the strength of its program combined with the law school’s commitment, geographic location and target population.

“This grant from LSAC provides ONU Law with a wonderful opportunity to expose college students from around the country to the benefits of a legal education,” said David C. Crago, dean of the College of Law.

Schools selected for PLUS grants are eligible to receive up to $100,000 per year for a maximum of three years. The PLUS program will begin at ONU Law in June 2010.

DiscoverLaw.org PLUS Programs are targeted to, but not restricted to, college students from racial and ethnic minority groups underrepresented in the legal profession.

The programs are designed for students in the first two years of college, and preference will be given to students who have registered for DiscoverLaw.org

The four-week programs provide an intense focus on the skills required to succeed in law school, the law school admission process and legal career opportunities. In 1960, Eugene Hanson, Hon. D. ’86,

former dean of the College of Law, accepted an appointment as a Fulbright Lecturer at the University of Iceland. While there, he became friends with Armann Snaevarr, then rector of the University of Iceland. Together, they devised a plan to create the Icelandic Legal Exchange Program (ILEP) between the two schools. Each year, students from Iceland travel to Ada to learn about law and life in America, while students from ONU travel to Iceland to learn about the ancient roots and contemporary practices of the Icelandic legal system.

During their stay in Iceland, ONU students are introduced to the legal system through visits to various governmental and legal institutions. Additionally, the students form friendships with their Icelandic counterparts and compare law school experiences in their native countries. Various cultural and historical sites are visited, including Thingvellir (the

A team of students from Ohio Northern University’s James F. Dicke College of Business Administration and T.J. Smull College of Engineering won the 2010 Illinois Institute of Technology’s Innovation Chase on Friday, April 3, 2010.

The James F. Dicke College of Business Administration was named one of the top 111 undergraduate business programs in the U.S. by Bloomberg BusinessWeek in its fifth annual rankings of undergraduate business programs. The college was ranked No. 72 and received an A+ grade for teaching quality.

The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in New York City has selected Carol M. Wilson, a junior double major in history and professional writing from Royal Oak, Mich., as one of 10 Gilder Lehrman History Scholars for 2010. This Gilder Lehrman award is the most prestigious in the nation for students studying U.S. history.

Mercy, the Milwaukee School of Engineering and the graduate program at IIT’s Institute of Design. The competition was sponsored by the Wrigley Company and the Kern Family Foundation’s KEEN Program and held at the Wrigley Innovation Center in Chicago.

Josh Koza, a junior management major from Fairview Park, Ohio, and Scott Bauman, a freshman

mechanical engineering major from Napoleon, Ohio, were the leaders of the winning team.

Andrea Meers, a freshman accounting major from Lodi, Ohio, Greg Shanefelt, a junior marketing major from Latrobe, Pa., and Jeff West, sophomore mechanical engineering major from Wooster, Ohio, also represented ONU in the competition.

The wind sweeping across the ONU tundra will soon be harnessed and used to power campus facilities. ONU partnered with NexGen Energy Partners, a Colorado company, to construct three wind turbines located west of the football stadium on Klingler Road. The turbines are now operational.

It is projected that the wind turbines will offset approximately 10 percent of ONU’s annual electricity consumption, says Dr. Eric Baumgartner, dean of the T.J Smull College of Engineering and professor of mechanical engineering. “Since the majority of the electricity produced in the Midwest comes from coal-fired power plants, the wind turbines give us the opportunity to replace a portion of our electricity usage with an emissions-free power source and become a more ‘green’ campus,” he explained.

The wind turbine project was initially proposed by a team of ONU engineering and business students who developed a feasibility study as part of their senior-level capstone design experience. During summer 2008, the University purchased and installed data collectors on the campus radio tower to monitor wind direction and speeds. After more than a year of research, the team determined that wind turbines are an economically viable option for the University.

The wind turbines also will be incorporated into student coursework. The College of Engineering recently received a $500,000 grant from the American Electric Power (AEP) Foundation to develop an integrated advanced energy curriculum for students and others who seek to work within the advanced and alternative energy industry. “The wind turbines will provide the college with numerous learning opportunities as representative examples of advanced and alternative energy systems,” said Baumgartner.

For six consecutive years, Ohio Northern students have been the recipients or runners up of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, the premier award honoring those in the fields of mathematics, the natural sciences and engineering.

At Ohio Northern, the “student” in student-athlete holds genuine meaning. Of the active players on this year’s football roster, 51 achieved a grade point average of a 3.0 or better, 22 players were at 3.5 or above, and seven earned a perfect 4.0.

With a full season performing a Spanish-music set under their belts, members of Ohio Northern University’s Marching Band jumped at the opportunity to perform their 2009 field show, “Sketches of Spain,” in the mother country.

So, over the Thanksgiving 2009 break, approximately 120 band members traded a free week at home for an unforgettable week in Spain.

While there, the band performed songs such as “Malaguena” and “Ballad Bellavia” at two different locations: once in Madrid during halftime of a soccer game and then at a tourist spot in Barcelona. The time the band spent in Barcelona was well appreciated. “The day I spent running around in Barcelona was the single best day I ever spent on a trip,” said Joshua Purk, a senior music education major from Springfield, Ohio.

While in Barcelona, a group of students (Purk included) spontaneously decided to take a bus up a mountainside, interested in a Spanish fortress situated high above. Little did they know, the bus only made half the trip, and the students were forced to walk the rest of the way in order to complete their journey. They continued up the mountain, and at the top sat Castillo de Montjuic, a rarely visited and “breathtakingly beautiful” Spanish castle.

The Raabe College of Pharmacy was the focus of an episode of “The Profile Series,” which aired on the Discovery Channel in March. The episode explored the rigor of pharmacy training and the ever-expanding role of the pharmacist on health care teams.

The band members tried to fit into Spanish culture as best as possible. Renee Sammet, a sophomore language arts education major from McComb, Ohio, says, “It took me a while to get used to the midday siesta and the typical dinner meal at 10 p.m.” Meanwhile, Purk found that most Spaniards were kind and patient toward them, even though they couldn’t communicate in the same language.

“Still, a trip never goes according to plan,” said Purk, referencing a few bumps the band encountered along the way. These included a flu outbreak that made the local news and an unwelcome sleepover in the airport during the trip home to the U.S. The group made the best of their situations, however, using the time bonding together, bringing the band closer as a family.

Despite illness and travel hiccups, ONU’s marching band enjoyed its week bonding and performing in Spain. “This is one of those life experiences that you tell your children about,” Sammet said.

ONU pharmacy students are partnering with Allen County Health Partners in Lima to help low-income patients receive the most benefit from their medical therapy. The students developed an innovative program called “Remember Your MEDS: Medication Education Delivers Success,” which will utilize education, counseling, pill boxes, timers, refrigerator magnet reminders, calendar stickers, handouts, phone calls and text messages to improve medical adherence.

“We believe our project has the potential to make a difference in the lives of patients, pharmacy students and the face of pharmacy for years to come,” said Kelsey Marvin, a fourth-year pharmacy student from Swanton, Ohio. “We plan to educate the patients while developing a personalized way for them to be reminded about daily administration and monthly refills to promote overall health and quality of life.”

The pharmacy students who developed the program are members of ONU’s American Pharmacists Association-Academy

of Student Pharmacists (APhA-ASP) chapter. In just three weeks, the group brainstormed and developed a grant proposal for their project. They were thrilled to learn they received the 2010 APhA-ASAP Project Chance Award to help fund their program. Only 10 APhA-ASP chapters were awarded the $2,000 for outstanding work. They were recognized at the opening ceremonies of the 2010 APhA-ASP annual meeting and exposition in Washington, D.C., on March 10.

“This award is such an honor because our pharmacy students were given this amazing opportunity from the American Pharmacists Association to start a new medication program in an environment where individuals are in need of health care,” said Dr. Kristen Finley, assistant professor of pharmacy practice. “It is a great way to help shape the direction of pharmacy practice in the community by educating people on the importance of taking their medications as prescribed.” Finley and Dr. David Bright, assistant professor of pharmacy practice, share the advisor duties for ONU’s APhA-ASP chapter.

For the third consecutive season, the Ohio Northern men’s indoor track and field team won the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) Championship at Marietta in February. The Ohio Northern coaching staff also was named OAC Men’s Indoor Track and Field Coaching Staff of the Year.

In addition, the women’s indoor track and field team claimed its second consecutive OAC championship.

Swimming and divingThe Ohio Northern men’s swimming and diving team won its sixth consecutive OAC championship at the University of Akron’s Ocasek Natatorium in February.

Because of this success, head coach Peggy Ewald and the men’s swimming and diving staff were declared OAC Co-Coaching Staff of the Year, sharing the award with the coaches at John Carroll.

The Ohio Northern women’s swimming and diving team prevailed as well, clinching its third OAC Championship in four years.

“I’m extremely excited for our teams,” said Ewald. “We had to fight through a lot of adversity, but the team was able to dig deep and overcome, and we’re happy to come out with the wins.”

O’Brien is a member of the Indiana Invaders, a team comprised of elite development athletes competing in USA Track & Field National Championship competitions in cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, and road racing.

Eugene Beeler, BA 49, died in 2006, but he created a legacy gift that is helping to create tomorrow’s leaders in The James F. Dicke College of Business Administration – 10 students since 2007!

After Beeler graduated from ONU in 1949, he was a certified public accountant and founding partner of the Howard & Beeler CPA Firm in Lima, Ohio. In 1997, he started the Beeler Endowed Scholarship Fund with a gift of cash. At his passing in 2006, he added to the scholarship by bequest. Robinson Young Alumni Award, established on May 29, 2004, was created to honor and recognize Robinson’s 45 years of influencing Ohio Northern University students and to ensure that his legacy continues for the next 45 years. The annual recipient demonstrates passion and loyalty toward their profession, community and alma mater, Ohio Northern University.

Applicants must have graduated within the last 15 years from ONU.•

Nick Lake, BSCE ’06, and his wife, Lauren, rang in the New Year with four special blessings. Just a few minutes after the ball dropped heralding 2010, Lauren gave birth to James (3 pounds, 3 ounces), followed by brother Isaiah (2 pounds, 6 ounces), followed by sister Michaela (2 pounds, 12 ounces), followed by brother Dakota (3 pounds, 9 ounces). The quadruplets claimed the title of “first babies” born in Toledo for the year.

Before their births, Lauren endured five weeks in the hospital on bed rest. The babies arrived at 30 weeks gestation. “Each day the babies stayed in the womb past 24 weeks took two days off their stay in the neonatal intensive care unit, in theory,” says Nick. “Reaching 30 weeks was awesome in its own right, and New Year’s Day made it that much more special.”

Two babies came home at the end of February, and the other two followed a couple of weeks later. They are all healthy and doing “surprisingly amazing,” says Nick. “Lauren and I are in very high spirits. A big family is what we believed we always wanted, and now we realize we were correct. The babies have started cooing and smiling within the last week, and seeing them smile when you say their name melts your heart.”

And babies make sixThe couple has temporarily moved in with Lauren’s parents so that Lauren’s retired mother can help take care of the babies. By following a strict feeding schedule, they have managed to keep their sanity, says Nick. “With the increased responsibilities, we have had to become more efficient and better at multi-tasking. We always seem to manage to get through each day just fine … no breakdowns yet.”

Perhaps the quadruplets will be Polar Bears in the future, Nick speculates. “I can’t even begin to imagine the tuition,” he adds, with a laugh. “Do they qualify for any scholarships yet? In any regards, at times like this, I thank my alma mater for providing me with the education and tools necessary to get to where I am today in life.”

Willis R. Deming, Oakland, Calif., Dec. 30, 2009. Willis led a full and successful life. After graduating from the Ohio State University College of Law, he practiced in Ohio, California and Washington, D.C. His law specialization was maritime law. He served in the U.S. Army on active duty from 1941-47. He held many positions throughout his career, eventually retiring from the Matson Navigation Company, where he became the senior vice president, secretary and general counsel. He also had a huge involvement in the Asian art world. He was on the board for the Society for Asian Art and served the society president from 1995-97. He is survived by his family and friends.

Karen A. Fourman, Findlay, Ohio, Dec. 12, 2009. Karen was the pastor of the Mount Blanchard UMC in Mount Blanchard, Ohio. Previously, she worked as a teacher at Arcanum Elementary School and served the High Street United Methodist Church in Springfield, Ohio. She is

Ralph D. Hays, Ada, Ohio, Jan. 27, 2010. Ralph began farming east of Ada in 1950. Ralph and his wife, Beulah, later developed the Hays Subdivision on this land, providing for the construction of 58 new homes. He was actively involved in the Ada community as a member of ONU’s College of Business Administration Advisory Board, the Sugar Grove United

Methodist Church administrative board, the Federal Land Bank board of directors, the Lions Club, American Legion Post 185, Liberty Conservation Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9381, and the Hardin County Draft Board. He also was a former mason of Ada Lodge 344 Free and Accepted Masons and current mason of the Latham Lodge 154 Free and Accepted Masons of Kenton. He received the Hardin County Outstanding Co-operator Award from the Hardin Soil and Water Conservation District. Survivors include his wife, Beulah, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Phyllis J. Relyea, Columbus, Ohio, Sept. 22, 2009. Phyllis graduated from Oakwood High School and from White Cross (Riverside) Nursing School. She was trained and served as a Stephen Minister. She was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, BSPh ’55.

Myron H. Scheid, Monroeville, Ohio, July 13, 2009. The father of Randy P. Scheid, BSCE ’04, Myron worked as a dairy farmer. He was a member of the National Guard from 1964-69. church. Jane enjoyed traveling with family and friends and stayed busy by quilting and playing tennis and bridge. Survivors include her son John, daughter Barbara, four grandchildren, and many other family members and friends.

Dorothy A. Walker, Palm Harbor, Fla., Feb. 19, 2010. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence, BSEE ’21.

1931Stuart C. Shipman, AA, Dublin, Ind., Oct. 20, 2009. After graduation, Stuart taught in a one-room school house in Morrow County, Ohio. He went on to receive his bachelor’s degree from The Ohio State University in 1937 and was subsequently drafted by the U.S. Army in June 1942. Stuart served his country admirably throughout World War II and received a Bronze Star for his efforts. After returning home from the war, he once again worked as an educator, this time throughout Ohio and Indiana. He was preceded in death by his wife, Martha, and is survived by his daughter, grandson and cousins.

1933Helen (Oates) Derr, AA, Findlay, Ohio, Jan. 1, 2010. Helen was a homemaker and was preceded in death by her husband, Donald. She is survived by her daughter Linda, four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

1938Richard L. Everhart, BA, Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 30, 2009. After graduating with honors from Ohio Northern, Richard served the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific from 1942-46. Upon receiving an honorable discharge, he finished his medical training and opened his practice, which he operated for 55 years. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Beth, their three daughters, eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and many other family members.

1939 Helen (Turner) Owens, BA, Grosse Pointe, Mich., May 5, 2009. Helen and her family resided in the Columbus, Ohio, area for close to 30 years. After she retired, Helen and her husband moved to Satellite Beach, Fla. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ronald, LLB ’39, and is survived by her two sons, two grandchildren, one great grandson and numerous other family members.

1940Anthony A. Alaimo, BSEd, Brunswick, Ga., Dec. 31, 2009. Anthony served with the Army Air Corps in World War II and escaped from a German prison while assisting in saving the lives of many comrades. Upon his return to the United States, he became a well-respected judge in Georgia known for his fairness in court proceedings. Anthony also is remembered for his hard work and contributions to the overhaul of Georgia prisons. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne, and is survived by nephew Joseph Gerace and great-nephew Joseph A. Gerace.

Geraldine E. (Disbrow) Edsall, BSEd, Reading, Pa., Jan. 14, 2010. Throughout her career, Geraldine taught in a number of locations in the United States and Canada. She eventually retired from Mt. Penn High School in 1981. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, BSME ’40.

Ralph P. White, BSPh, Sarasota, Fla., Oct. 8, 2009. Ralph served the United States admirably as a first lieutenant with the U.S. Army Air Forces in the 850th Bomb Squadron of the 490th Bomb Group. After his discharge, Ralph became a pharmacist at his family’s business, White Drug Stores, and also had a 25-year career as an investment broker. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane, their three children, four grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and a sister.

Upon graduation, Jean worked as a teacher for Kinsman/Badger High School, the Champion and Howland School Districts, as well as United Airlines. Jean and her late husband, Lawrence, also owned a dairy farm. She was active in her community as a member of the Kinsman United Methodist Church, Johnston Literary Club, Bay View Literary Club, Chat-n-Patch, Business Women’s Association, American Legion Auxiliary and the Kinsman/Hartford Eastern Star Chapter. She is survived by her two children, Lawrence and Trudy, brother James, six grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Joseann (Donaldson) Heck, BSEd, Carey, Ohio, Nov. 12, 2009. Joseann served her country in World War II with the Marine Corps. Upon graduation, she owned the Shift Shack in Naples, Fla., for 17 years. Joseann was involved in many organizations, including the Pilot Club International and Ladies Auxiliary of Henderson Creek Park, Carey Women’s Club, and the Girl Scouts. She enjoyed bowling, shuffleboard and cards. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles, BSEd ’49, and is survived by her three children, seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, two sisters and one brother.

1948Charles H. Dankworth, BA, St. Clairsville, Ohio, Dec. 6, 2009. Charles served with the U.S. Navy in World War II and later with the Coast Guard. He had a long career in banking as he worked with Buckeye Savings and Loan and taught classes at the American Institute of Banking. After his retirement from banking, Charles began a career in real estate. He was involved in his community with the Bellaire Kiwanis Club, Boy Scouts of America, Salvation Army and many other organizations. He was preceded in death by his wife,

Clara, and is survived by his two sons, Charles and William, three grandchildren, and sister Margaret.

John B. McCandlish, BSEE, Newark, Ohio, June 14, 2007. John served his country honorably in World War II with the 312th Army Air Force Base unit. Upon returning home, he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering and worked for American Electric Power. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jean, and is survived by a daughter, three grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a niece.

Carl J. Vogt, LLB, Marblehead, Ohio, May 1, 2009. Carl served the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II from 1942-45. Carl worked for numerous companies throughout the Northeast Ohio area up until his retirement in 1982. He was active in his community as a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Ohio Ottawa County Bar Associations, American Legion Post #113, Boy Scouts of America, and many other organizations throughout the communities in which he lived. He is survived by his wife, Beth, sons William and Thomas, daughters Susan and Janet, and 13 grandchildren.

1949James M. Gilbert, BSEd, Ada, Ohio, Dec. 27, 2009. James served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Upon graduation, he taught math and science for 27 years at LaFayette Jackson School and Bath High School and briefly taught at Ohio Northern. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Ada and the Ada VFW Post 9381. He was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Jean, and is survived by his four stepchildren, brother John, one brother-in-law, one sister-in-law, 13 step-grandchildren and 32 step-great-grandchildren.

Wava (Althaus) Mauk, BSEd, Lima, Ohio, Oct. 22, 2009. Wava worked as an elementary teacher in the Shawnee school system for 20 years after receiving her degree from Ohio Northern. After retirement, she remained active in the community as a member of La Sertoma Club, American Association of University Women, the Ohio Northern University Women, and the Allen County Retired Teachers

Association. She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, and is survived her children and grandchildren.

Paul R. Maurer, BSPh, Wooster, Ohio, Aug. 7, 2009. Paul admirably served with the U.S. Army from 1940-45. Upon his return home, he graduated from ONU with a pharmacy degree that took only three years to complete. After working at numerous Gallagher Drug stores across the state, Paul opened Maurer Pharmacy in 1952 where he remained for the next 43 years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, and is survived by two sons, seven grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and a brother.

Charles H. Rothschild, BSEd, Cartersville, Ga., Oct. 24, 2009. Charles served his country admirably in the U.S. Navy during World War II. While at Ohio Northern, he was a member of Delta Sigma Phi. Upon his graduation, Charles worked as an industrial arts teacher as well as a football and basketball coach. He is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Marjorie, two children, 10 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

James O. Waysack, BSME, Cleveland, Ohio, Dec. 8, 2009. James served in the Marine Corps during World War II. Upon graduation, he became a mechanical engineer at the HK Ferguson Co. in Cleveland, Ohio. He is survived by his wife, Mary, children James, Robert, Gary, Linda and Sandra, 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

1950Donald D. Pond, BSME, Elyria, Ohio, Dec. 21, 2009. Donald was a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force and eventually transferred to the U.S. Army Air Force. After the war, he attended Case Institute of Technology (Case Western) and graduated from Ohio Northern. He carried on his career at Firestone Tire and Rubber and eventually moved to Timms Spring Company, from which he retired. He is survived by his wife, Ann.

Martha (Godwin) Powell, BSEd, West Chester, Ohio, Aug. 3, 2009. After graduating from Ohio Northern, Martha became a teacher for the Ross Local School System and was a devoted member of the Moose Lodge Ladies Auxiliary. She was preceded in death by James, her devoted husband of 49 years. She is survived by two children, James and Beth, and two grandchildren.

1951Robert J. Cox, LLB, Arcanum, Ohio, July 16, 2009. Robert served with the U.S. Army Air Corps throughout World War II. Upon graduation, Robert practiced law in Darke County, Ohio, for 50 years and was the founder of RJ Cox Company/Cox Trailers. He is survived by Virginia, his loving wife of 58 years, three daughters, Barbara, Susan and Kathleen, three sons, Joseph, Jim and John, 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

1952Eugene B. Fox, JD, Aventura, Fla., Jan. 31, 2010. Eugene served in the U.S. Marines before coming to ONU for law school. He held a successful career in Youngstown, Ohio, and enjoyed returning to Ohio on a regular basis after making Florida his primary place of residence. He served as a judge, was president of the Mahoning County Bar Association, and was widely recognized for his accomplishments. He is survived by his wife, Tamara, daughters and grandchildren.

William F. Meyer, BSCE, Virginia Beach, Va., March 27, 2009. William served in the U.S. Navy for 26 years before retiring in 1981. He is survived by his wife, Carol, daughter Cathy, son Greg, four grandchildren and four brothers.

1955Russell C. Schwickert, BSEE, Alger, Ohio, Nov. 24, 2009. Russell honorably served with the U.S. Navy during World War II and received numerous medals for his dedication and courage to the war effort. After graduation, he was a co-inventor of the halogen lamp with support mechanism used in headlights and worked on electro-mechanical, electro-optical and mechanical equipment. He is survived by three children, one brother, one sister, 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

1956Henrietta M. (Ziegler) Ault, BSEd, Kenton, Ohio, Feb. 19, 2010. Henrietta had a teaching career with the Beech Grove School, the Dunkirk School and the Kenton school system. She was a member of a number of organizations and was a part of the First United Methodist Church in Kenton and the Fruitland Park Methodist Church in Florida. She was preceded in death by both her first and second husbands, Russell Cronin and Samuel Ault.

Robert A. Purdy, BSPh, Doylestown, Ohio, Jan. 23, 2010. Robert attended Ohio State University and graduated from ONU. He was influential in beginning Phi Delta Chi. He owned and operated Purdy’s Pharmacy and

retired from the Chippewa Township Fire Department. He is survived by his wife, Linda.

1957Robert l. Camp, BSEd, Columbus, Ohio, Feb. 28, 2010. During his time at Northern, Robert was a member of the Alpha Sigma Phi fraternity. Throughout his career he served as a teacher, a sales representative for multiple companies, and as a local realtor and broker. He served as a member of the Columbus Board of Realtors and the National Association of Realtors. He was a member of the U.S. Census Bureau and a broker at Jackson Real Estate and Development Company. He was preceded in death by his wife, Judith.

Ray l. Holland, BA, Crestline, Ohio, Oct. 11, 2009. Ray worked in education from 1958 until his retirement in 1992, including 25 years as the superintendent of the Crestline Exempted Village School District. He was involved in a variety of other organizations, such as the Crestline United Methodist Church, Crestline Lions Club, Crestline Historical Society, Crest Investors and the Crestline United Way Campaign. He also was a member of the Crawford County Mental Health Board. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlene, and is survived by three children, seven grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and three sisters.

Golda E. (Keith) Hughes, BSEd, Alger, Ohio, Feb. 28, 2010. Golda was a homemaker and a teacher. She taught at Gomar High School throughout her teaching career. She was also a bookkeeper for Pizza Planet in Bellefontaine, Ohio. She is survived by her husband, Dennis.

Soon W. Lee, BA, Lower Makefield Township, Pa., Feb. 14, 2010. Following the Korean War, Soon

immigrated to the United States to continue his education. After graduating from ONU, he went on to receive two other degrees from the Boston University School of Theology and the New York University School of Business Administration. He spent most of his career working in the health care field for various hospitals. In 1993, he established his own health care teaching company, the Healthcare Finance Institute. He was a member of the Metropolitan Philadelphia Chapter and he received the Chapter’s Benjamin Franklin Award. In 2009, the chapter established the Soon Lee Education Award. He is survived by his wife, Joyce.

Richard A. Morton, BSEd, Lima, Ohio, Feb. 17, 2010. Richard had a teaching career with Bath Public Schools, the Shawnee school system, and Princeton High School. He was a member of several choral groups and was an active member in Boy Scouts, serving as a scoutmaster. Richard also served in the Korean War in the U.S. Army. He is survived by family and friends and was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy.

1959Mary J. (Adams) Hawk, BSEd, Lima, Ohio, Jan. 4, 2010. Mary made her career as an educator. She retired from Shawnee Local School District. She also taught at ONU and Wright State University. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert.

1960John D. Dennis, BSEd, Bellefontaine, Ohio, Oct. 13, 2009. John began his professional career as a math teacher at Hebron High School and then moved to the same position at Indian Lake High School. After his role as an educator, he spent 40 years at Thomas and Marker Construction Company as a project manager. He is survived by his wife, Suzanne, a sister, a niece and two nephews.

1962 Donald E. Birkmeier, BSEE, Cedarville, Mich., Dec. 27, 2009. Donald served in the U.S. Army from 1957-60. After finishing his degree at ONU, he began working as an electrical engineer at General Dynamics, from which he retired. He is survived from by his wife, Joyce.

was employed as a pharmacist and opened McCracken Pharmacy in 1961, working there until his retirement in 1992. Jack was involved in his community with groups such as the Waynesburg-Franklin Township Volunteer Fire Department, Waynesburg Lions Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Waynesburg Area Chamber of Commerce. In 1999, Jack received the DeBow Freed Award for his years of service and contribution towards Ohio Northern.

1963William L. Knowles, BSEd, Marietta, Ohio, Jan. 8, 2010. A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served from 1952-56. He worked in the history department of Marietta High School for 33 years and was a Methodist pastor. He is survived by his wife, Joan.

Charles R. Shoemaker, BSCE, Citrus Heights, Calif., Jan. 16, 2010. Charles had an extensive career in California state government, including work at the Water Resources Control Board, the Department of Water Resources as a chief deputy director, and as a deputy attorney general. He had many pastimes and was an active member in the lives of his family and community. He is survived by his wife, Janice (Stahl), BS ’61.

Diane lee Johnson, BSEd, Dayton, Ohio, Nov. 12, 2009. Upon graduation, Diane taught in the Vandalia-Butler City School System for 32 years. After retirement, she moved to Ft. Myers, Fla. She is survived by two brothers, C. Nevada Johnson and Edwin J. Johnson, several nieces and nephews, and many friends.

Elizabeth “Betty” K. (Park) Miller, BA, Ada, Ohio, April 23, 2010. Betty taught English at ONU from 1965-86. After retiring from teaching, Betty worked in ONU’s Department of Public Relations for three years. Betty was greatly involved in the Ada community, serving as a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Ada Community Improvement Corporation, the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, the Sigma Tau Delta English Honorary, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation. She also volunteered in the local history section of the Ada Public Library and wrote the “Small Town Sampler” column for The Ada Herald, which was later published as a book. Betty received the Ada Town and Gown Citizen of the Year award in 1993 and

ONU’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001. She was preceded in death by her husband, John C. “Jack,” BA ’46.

1965Sondra S. (Stryker) laine, BA, West Sparta, N.Y., Aug. 6, 2009. Sondra was preceded in death by her husband, John.

Gary E. Pidock, BSEd, Columbus, Ohio, Nov. 1, 2009. Upon graduation, Gary served his country in Vietnam where he was an officer with the U.S. Marine Corps. He then served as a flight instructor for the Marine Corps Air Station in Jacksonville, N.C., until his release from active duty in 1973. Gary then worked as a special agent and investigator with the Criminal Investigative Division of the Internal Revenue Service. He is survived by his two children, John and Amy, and two grandchildren.

1967David A. Davis, BSCE, Yorktown, Va., Dec. 8, 2009. David retired from Newport News Shipbuilding as an engineer supervisor after 32 years with the company. In his free time, he enjoyed activities such as golf, woodworking, gardening and reading. He is survived by his wife, Barbara, daughters Dana and Mindy, two grandchildren and two sisters.

Tim worked as a pharmacist for hospitals throughout Ohio and Kentucky after graduation and managed markets for Ortho-McNeil-Janssen Pharmaceuticals. He is survived by his wife, Amanda, children Sarah, Douglas and Thomas, stepsons Matthew and Daniel, and brothers Gary, Ron, Kevin, Kurt and Brent.

1986Margaret (Cordeaux) Campoli, BA, Ada, Ohio, Jan. 25, 2010. Margaret and her husband, Joseph, H of F ’98, served the University for 30 years. Margaret was a substitute teacher at Ada schools, former Girl Scout leader, and a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Ada, the Ohio Northern University Faculty Wives, the PEO, the Ada Women’s Association, the Ada CIC, the United Way, UNICO of Lima, and the Quatra Club in Ada. At ONU, Joe coached men’s basketball, men’s junior varsity basketball, women’s soccer and football. In 2008, ONU dedicated the new parquet-style floor in the Sports Center as the Joe and Margaret Campoli Court in honor of the couple’s years of service to the University. Survivors include her husband, children and grandchildren.

Ohio Northern University was named to the 2009 President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, the highest federal recognition a college or university can receive for its commitment to volunteering, service-learning and civic engagement.
