In September 2012, the professional bachelor program Industrial Product Design of Howest started its 10th academic year. The master program Indus-trial Design (industrial engineer) recently is part of Ghent University. Plenty of reasons to this academic year expose the work of our students and of more than 650 alumni.

Industrial designers create the products we use and/or see every day. You’ll discover them at this traveling exposition: a selection of 50 products; realiza-tions of 50 alumni in cooperation with companies. This academic year, the exposition is – among others – part of the opening event of the Kortrijkse Budafabriek, of Interieur Extra, the festival of creativity, and the Week van het Ontwerpen (Design Week) after an intermediate exposition at the buildings of the Ghent University.

Zendow#neo is a new range of windows and doors. Deceuninck introduces an alternative solution for standard galvanized reinforcements in PVC windows. Most of all, the company ensures a significant enhancement of the thermal performances.

To that end, Deceuninck uses new technologies. On the one hand, you have the thermal reinforcement, an extrusion of recycled PVC foam in a PVC skin that contains a number of steel wires. On the other hand, the profiles are reinforced with a continuous glass fiber strip.

People assume that aluminum windows and doors don’t insulate well, but that is without considering aliplast!

We launched a new innovative aluminum profile system with the latest insulation materials that are painted in the same colors as the aluminum color charts. This STar even insulates that good that it is applicable in passive building, with Uf values up to 0.81 W/m²K! During the development process, we did not only keep the final consumer in mind, but also the ease of the carpenter.

Thanks to the symmetrical construction, the STar can be built in extremely flexible with a superfast manufacturing time. The amount of accessories in comparison with the conventional systems in the market were also drastically reduced without losing functionality. Less is more!

WuWei, The art of wellbeing.

Early 2012, Kortrijk welcomed a new wellness complex that consists of a hotel, restaurant, wellness and meeting rooms.

Fordesign designed this table from the point of view of designing a simple tablet hat can be stored away easily and quickly. The pure whole and the simplicity of the table fits Taoism, which is the basis for the house style of the entire WuWei complex. The seminar rooms of WuWei are dressed with 36 colorful tables, which can be arranged in any way at any given time. The handle in the table top ensures the userfriendliness to set up the table and hides the battery of your laptop.

The smart Ilana bedside table is composed of durable materials and its function is storing personal belongings of patients in social services. It can be used on two sides and is available with an optional fridge and/or side table.

The flexible design and production process allow to efficiently meet client-specific wishes.

The bedside table is composed of four aluminum corner profiles in which full plastic panels are slid. The bottom panel and the table top keep the construction in place. The easy to use side table and the fact that the parts are easy to clean result from an ergonomic study in cooperation with the nursing staff.

De Multi-Coil-resolver (MCr) is an angle sensor that measures the angle of the rotor in synchronic electric motors for electric or hybrid vehicles. To optimize the efficiency and the torque of the motor, the angle measure-ment must be done highly accurate and fast for a smooth commutation.

With a resolver to digital converter, the angle is digitally available at any given time.

With the MCr, the angular deviations are typically smaller than +/- 0.1°. This through the unique winding scheme that is perfectly symmetrical and also through which the external influences are minimized.

Through all that, the MCr also contributes to eco-friendlier vehicles.

Webike is a workbench with pedals. Physical exercise through calmly peda-ling is transferred into electrical energy that can be used to charge applian-ces such as laptops or telephones.

Webike immediately indicates the amount of physical activity of the user. The more force you apply, the more LEDs light up on the led strip on the central console that also holds the plug. Webike is able to deliver 30W/220V smart energy.

For the design, much attention was paid to the durability of all components. The 3P concept of durability was used during the entire design process: People, Planet & Profit.

Our assignment was to design a new series for our american customer HSN (TV Shopping Channel), which would be sold under the name of chef Todd English.

The aluminum pans have a hard anodized exterior with a cool-touch silicone wrapped stainless steel handle. as with all the GreenPan pots and pans, the interior has a ThermolonTM ceramic nonstick layer.

The price level of the design had to be as low as possible, which made us look for a handle construction with a minimum of material. a stainless steel sheet is cut and bent and then provided with a layer of silicone (available in different colors).

Unlike most traditional household appliances’ non-stick coating, ThermolonTM does not contain any PTFE (and uses no PFOa in manufacturing), which could be released at high temperatures in the shape of toxic gasses.

This cylindrical three-part hinge for the latest generation of aluminum doors stands apart through its elegance, stability, adjustability and its innovative attachment technique.

The hinge is conceived as such that the unavoidable offset is kept to a mini-mum. In that way, adjusting (both horizontally as vertically) is optional with standard vent weights.

This hinge, with a life span of over one million cycli, is attached at the height of the thermal break via a completely new attachment system that can be placed afterwards.

This development is at the basis of the entire product family that situates in the highest market segment and that mainly is an export product.

The Balanza lighting range contains a floor and table luminaire. The material choice, the shapes and proportions are modern, but also reflect an iconic shape. The design balances between the extra matt finish and the sand-blasted glass plates, which produce a warm, diffuse light.

Balancing on the edge of the table, the luminaire draws the attention through its optical illusion. The weight of the battery and the electronic components at the bottom of this luminaire result in a center of mass below the edge of the table. This results in a stable position and avoids that the lamp falls down.

The aluminum structure carries an OLED wrapped in acrylate and its fine and elegant design emphasizes the slim OLED panel.
