ANTOINETTE “TONI” SWAIN MARWITZ ’66

Blue Citation

Toni Marwitz has a long history of giving back to Allegheny College, not only as a financial supporter but as a volunteer serving former classmates and current students as well.

In 2016, she served on her 50th Reunion Commit-tee acting as the outreach coordinator. She also was involved in planning her milestone 40th and 35th Reunions, fund-raising and planning the project that brought the Vietnam Memorial to the campus. She has funded a scholarship that supports study-away experiences. Brianna Fowler ’16, a recent recipient of the scholarship, said: “I had the opportunity to study

in Angers, France, through the support of the Antoinette Swain Marwitz ’66 Student Support Fund. As a result, I have gained true independence, a more positive outlook on life and a desire to return to France.”

Being able to help students study overseas must be gratifying for Toni since she spent her career in foreign service. Her last assignment was as the American consul general in To-ronto, Canada. Since her retirement, Toni has settled in Savannah, Georgia, where she has served as board chair for a shelter for victims of domestic violence, and as a member of the leadership team of Faith in Practice, which sponsors medical missions in Guate-mala. She is an active Rotarian, serving as current club president. She continues to enjoy travel, taking several trips overseas every year. She is also a member of Alpha Chi Omega.

Toni has served on the College’s Alumni Council, has sponsored alumni events in To-ronto, and has served as a mentor and panelist for career-education activities. Besides the scholarship she established, she is an ardent supporter of the Annual Fund as well as the Ward and Vicki Jamison Scholarship Fund and has designated Allegheny as a beneficiary of a portion of her estate.

“There is literally nothing that we have asked Toni to do in nearly two decades to which she has not responded with an enthusiastic ‘yes!’,” says Melissa Mencotti, the College’s director of gift planning.

Toni’s dedication to the College is an inspiration to all who know her. It is with deep gratitude for her many years of service that we honor Toni with the Blue Citation.

DR. BRUCE H. ROCKWELL ’85 Blue Citation

Allegheny College is proud to call Dr. Bruce Rockwell an alumnus. He represents all that is good about being a Gator. Bruce enjoys a career in medicine, having earned his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989. He now practices at UPMC Hamot in Erie, and in private practice in Lakewood, New York. He travels the world, sometimes for pleasure, but also in service of others. He annually volunteers his services in Honduran vein-care clinics sponsored by the Hackett Hemwall Foundation, offering badly needed medical care in im-poverished areas where it would not otherwise exist.

After the events of Sept. 11, 2001, Bruce joined the U.S. Army Reserve Medical Corps. He served tours in

Landstuhl, Germany and Iraq as an interventional radiologist treating both American soldiers and Iraqi civilians caught in the combat.

Through it all, Bruce has unassumingly supported Allegheny. He co-chaired his 25th Class Reunion, offering a challenge gift to encourage classmates in the College’s fund-raising efforts. When his schedule has allowed, he has enjoyed making the drive almost weekly to Allegheny to sing in the College Chorus. His son, Bruce J., followed in his father’s footsteps as a Gator and graduated in 2015.

Yet it is Bruce’s devotion to the Allegheny choirs that best speaks to his relationship with the College. In 2012, the choirs celebrated the three-decade tenures of Ward and Vicki Jamison. In their honor, Bruce was a moving force behind creation of the Ward and Vicki Jamison Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Ward and Vicki Jamison Vocal Studies Award. Also as part of the event, he digitized hundreds of hours of choir concert archival tapes in the process of creating a searchable online music archive of Allegheny’s complete choral history. “He did an enormous amount of work in putting together the archive,” says Ward Jamison. “It was a true labor of love on his part and something that simply would not have been done within the confines of the Music Department’s staffing, budgetary and technological resources.”

With co-producer David Borenstein ’88, Bruce created a commemorative CD of choral performances from the Jamison years to share with 2012 reunion attendees. Three years later, in honor of the College bicentennial, they collaborated on another CD of music composed by Allegheny alumni and sung by Allegheny choirs. Bruce’s longtime partner is Karen Miller ’85, who has been steadfastly at his side since the College Choir reunion in 2006 (including annual volunteer trips to Honduras).

In his life and service, Bruce sings out for Allegheny Beatissima. Allegheny is grateful to Bruce for his service to the College, and on behalf of all those who have benefited from his efforts, we extend our thanks.

JOHN M. KELSO, JR. ’66Gold Citation

John M. Kelso, Jr., is an exemplary role model for Allegheny students.

John enjoyed a distinguished 32-year career with the Federal Bureau of Investigation where he served as a Special Agent investigating kidnappings, bank robber-ies, corruption, and domestic and international terrorism cases. He was involved in the high-profile kidnapping case involving heiress Patty Hearst early in his career and later was one of the lead investigators in the 1988 bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scot-land. John retired as Section Chief of the FBI’s Freedom of Information Act/Privacy Act Section, a role in which

he was dubbed “the man who keeps the FBI’s secrets.” John retired at the Senior Execu-tive Service level. He is esteemed by his colleagues who elected him to serve as national president of the Society of Former Special Agents of the FBI.

John could easily have rested on his well-earned laurels, but instead he remains busy serving in his community. In 2013, he received the Power of One Award from Duke Energy in recognition of his dedication and commitment to the children and families of Brunswick County, North Carolina. John works with first-time juvenile offenders in Teen Court, an alternative to juvenile court. He teaches students to assume the roles of attorneys and jurors. A Communities in Schools news release noted that John “has earned the respect and admiration of students and the community for the vital role he plays” and that he is a role model for youth in his community.

Spirituality is an integral part of John’s life as well. He is a member of the Church Coun-cil where he serves as the lay leader and as a representative to the United Methodist Annual Conference, the denomination’s regional governing body. He also has been pres-ident of the Southport/Oak Island Kiwanis Club and has served as a volunteer firefighter and member of the fire police. He sings in the church choir and the Sea Notes Choral Society and plays the clarinet in several community bands. John is a former president of the College’s Alumni Council and was awarded Allegheny’s Blue Citation for service to the College in 2010. He married his wife, Lydia, 50 years ago this month, and they have twin sons, Glenn and Mark, who are both commanders in the U.S. Navy.

In recognition of his many professional and volunteer achievements, Allegheny is proud to honor John with its Gold Citation.

DR. ANN HOLMES ARESON ’67Alumni Medal

Ann Areson served 17 years as director of foundation & corporate relations, and her work supported almost everyone who studied and worked at Allegheny College. Students benefited from enhanced scholarship funding and innovative programs. Faculty members furthered their teaching and research methods from grants she helped secure. Almost everyone on campus was able to take advantage of new equipment and facilities provided by those grants.

It all was made possible by Ann’s ability to understand complex needs and translate them into polished appli-cations for funding from government, corporate and

nonprofit agencies.

“Ann is the consummate Alleghenian. She’s known for her loyalty and selfless service to the College,” said Marjorie Klein, vice president for development and alumni affairs. “She is an incredibly dedicated, energetic and super-smart leader across the campus community. As we built the development and alumni affairs program over the last two decades, we often relied on Ann’s intellect and capable guidance.”

Ann graduated from Allegheny in 1967 and, along with her diploma, she took with her a lifelong commitment to the College. While away from the campus, she earned two post-graduate degrees and worked as a college administrator, writer and consultant. She also volunteered in a number of roles for the College, including serving on the Alumni Council, during which time she was its president. She also served briefly as the interim editor of Allegheny magazine.

Ann returned to work at Allegheny in 1999, and in 2000, was recognized with the Blue Citation for her volunteer work on behalf of the College. During her time at Allegheny — she retired in June 2016 — Ann earned the respect and affection of her colleagues.According to the Foundation & Corporate Relations Office, Ann was part of a team that raised $42 million during her time as director, making available to the College an average of $3.4 million annually during the last five years.

Dave Roncolato ’79, director of the Office of Civic Engagement, credits Ann’s work for bringing an endowed Bonner program, the legacy of the Davies program, and a sustain-able AmeriCorps VISTA program to Allegheny.

Ann’s many years of dedication, service and leadership to her alma mater inspire all who meet her. It is with deep gratitude that we present Ann with the Alumni Medal, the College’s oldest and most prestigious award.

Dr. Russ Ormiston Thoburn Award for Excellence in Teaching

Since his arrival in 2010, Dr. Russ Ormiston, assistant professor of economics, has had a dramatic impact on the lives of students and alumni, from offering challeng-ing course material, to helping students to excel and do their best work, to providing support and guidance through the Senior Comp experience, to shaping their careers.

“After taking my first-ever economics class with Profes-sor Ormiston, I decided to become an economics major because of how enthusiastic he was about the material that was being taught,” says Sarah Moller ’16.

Dr. Ormiston has created new classes — including Human Resource Management, a senior seminar titled The Employment Relationship, and a first-year seminar called Baseball’s Sabermetric Revolution — in the Economics Department. Since 2015, he has been co-director of the College’s Center for Business and Economics. “He constantly innovates in the classroom, using a mix of PowerPoint, discussion and student-led activi-ties,” says Tomas Nonnenmacher ’90, professor of economics. “He is humble and has ably incorporated his students’ and his colleagues’ feedback to improve his teaching.”

“I feel incredibly blessed to have found a home at Allegheny College,” says Dr. Ormis-ton, who completed his graduate and undergraduate work at Michigan State University. “I have come to cherish the liberal arts environment and deeply appreciate the terrific students, faculty and alumni who help make this such a wonderful place to teach and learn.”

Alumni praise Dr. Ormiston’s teaching methods and commitment to their success and the advancement of the College. “Professor Ormiston took the time to define real-life examples and make any difficult concept accessible to all students,” says Amanda Mitch-ell ’15. “Beyond that, he chose to teach things that would not only assist students in continuing education and careers, but inspire a better life in general.”

Ethan Winter ’14 recounts how Dr. Ormiston worked with him to complete coursework while Winter was deployed to Kyrgyzstan as part of the U.S. Air National Guard. Abby Sorensen ’12, now a golf coach at Allegheny, talks about Dr. Ormiston’s willingness to help recruit student-athletes.

Students say they mostly appreciate his focus on them. “Professor Ormiston operates with a clear focus and care for his students,” says Forrest Stuckey ’16. “He asks that his students push themselves and is willing to meet their efforts in order to ensure they excel.”

DR. HOWARD TAMASHIROJulian Ross Award for Excellence in Teaching

Dr. Howard Tamashiro not only teaches students, but also prepares global citizens.

A professor of political science, he is admired for his knowledge of world affairs, his ability to instill a sense of civic duty in his students, and his dedication to their success.

“I am a political science graduate because of Howard Tamashiro,” says Katherine Locke ’09. “I am a global citizen engaged in my community, a regular voter and a smart and savvy citizen about the U.S. role in the world because of Professor Tamashiro.”

Dominic Randazzo ’05 says he chose his career at least partly because of Dr. Tamashi-ro’s political science classes. “For the past 10 years, I’ve been a United States diplomat, tasked by the president with doing the same work and using the same skills introduced to me by Professor Tamashiro years ago.”

Dr. Tamashiro received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Hawaii and his doctorate from The Ohio State University. He joined the Allegheny faculty in 1989, and his specialties include international relations, U.S. foreign policy, and national-security studies.

He has offered unique courses at Allegheny, including one on the North Atlantic Treaty Organization that culminated in students winning the Model NATO competition in Washington, D.C., four years in a row. “I knew that Professor Tamashiro was not only teaching us about NATO, its member states, and its institutional history, but he led us in learning how to negotiate, haggle, cajole, cooperate and convince,” says Randazzo.

Kim Phan ’97, executive director of the International Law Institute in Washington, D.C., cites Dr. Tamashiro as “one of the greatest influences in my life. Professor Tamashi-ro and I debated for six to 10 hours per week, every week. I was fiery, and he was patient, always presenting brilliant information in a low-key way.”

“Howard Tamashiro has dedicated himself, heart and soul, to the art of teaching,” says Shannan Mattiace, chair of the College’s Political Science Department. “Howard takes his students seriously, listens to them carefully, and works with them tirelessly. Howard’s rigor, combined with his gentle and generous spirit, has positively benefited the lives of hundreds of Alleghenians. We are very proud of his accomplishments and celebrate his dedication to our students and to our department.”

RUTH DONALDSON ANDEL ’85Robert T. Sherman Distinguished Service Award

At a college where we treasure our past, being an archivist will always be a challenge. Ruth Donald-son Andel has been asked again and again, espe-cially prior to and during the College’s bicentennial celebration in 2015, to go above and beyond in her service to Allegheny.

Through her work as one of the leading members of the committee that planned the College’s bicenten-nial events, Ruth was the go-to person on a number of projects. Two examples: She helped lead the group that researched, deliberated and wrote text for the 43 plaques that make up the History Walk-

way in front of Bentley Hall. She helped craft the displays that told Allegheny’s story in the state capitol building in Harrisburg and other venues.

Throughout the planning for the bicentennial celebration, Ruth was called on to un-cover long-lost facts and photos and at times to affirm what we know about the College. Her knowledge of Allegheny’s history stands second only to her great affection for the College, which she joined as an employee in 2001.

After earning her bachelor’s degree in history, she studied for a master’s degree in library and information science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. “When she arrived [back at Allegheny], she faced a huge task,” says Jonathan Helmreich, the College’s historian. “We never had a college archivist before, although members of the library staff had done some basic work in the part-time they had available. Ruth modernized the archival system, accessed a vast amount of material, willingly helped me and many others in digging out information, and modeled the spirit of cooperation. Ruth in her quiet, self-effacing way has done a great deal to preserve and enhance understanding of Allegheny’s history. We owe her many thanks.”

Ruth has done tremendous and ongoing work to preserve the College’s history and bring it alive for the community. Under her leadership, the College’s History and Heritage Committee has expanded its efforts to bring Allegheny’s history home to students and alumni through fun-filled trivia challenges, Founders Day celebrations, and social media.

It is fitting that the College honors Ruth Andel with the Robert T. Sherman Distin-guished Service Award for returning to her alma mater and helping preserve its history for future generations.
