The monthly newsletter of the Wright State University Alumni Association Vol. 2, No. 6 April, 1980

KARLA MORAN DEPARTS We would like to acknowledge the departure of Karla Moran (B.A. English, 1976) from the staff of the Alumnews. She departs to meet the increasing demands of her career. Her departure creates a definite void in the ranks, as she has almost singlehandedly produced the Alumnews since its inception in November, 1977. Her professional stewardship has made this publication what it is today. In addition to the Alumnews, Karla has made a number of other significant contributions to the Association, and the alumni as a whole. She served on the Association Board of Directors from 1977 until January 1980 including a stint as Association Secret~ry. She applied her professional talent to the benefit of alumni generally when she was instrumental in the development of the bi-monthly Wrightstater.

TRAVEL NEWS - BASEBALL DON'T STRIKE OUT!! and.miss a chance to join WSU Alumni Association members and their guests for a Cincinnati Weekend on June 21st and 22nd, 1980. The bus will leave Wright State's parking lot bright and early Saturday morning, June 21st and journey to Cincinnati to root the Reds to victory. We will get to see the Reds play the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2:15 game at Riverfront Stadium. Our travel itinerary includes an overnight stay at Stouffer's in Cincinnati, a buffet-style dinner at the Playboy Club, which includes two cocktails. After you attend the show at the Playboy Club you can disco the night away or return for a nightcap at Stouffer's and the alumni hospitality suite. The next day we will leave our hotel and travel by bus to Riverfront again to see the 1:45 game with St. Louis, and then we will

r~turn to the WSU parking lot Sunday evening. This trip has been popular in the past, so sign up early!! The total cost for this weekend is $66.00 per person based on double occupancy. Call the Alumni Office at 873-2620 for reservations.

- EXCITEMENT In addition to the Cincinnati Reds Trip, the Wright State University Alumni Association has planned several other interesting ~rips for the remainder of the year. The Travel Committee has a trip to Las Vegas scheduled for August 9-11, 1980. Join us on a visit to the city that never sleeps. See the lights that illuminate the Strip after the sun goes down, from such famous casinos as Caesar's Palace, the MGM Grand, the Desert In~, the Sahara, or the Frontier. You might even see a cowboy, wearing a suit of lights, ride through a casino! Try your luck at baccarat, blackjack, faro or roulette while you're there. Since the casinos are practically back to back, and cab fares in Vegas are expensive, it's easy to ramble from one casino to another. More than gambling, Vegas is also known as the entertainment capital of the world, where top entertainers command as mµch as $125,000 per week for their glittering costumed stage shows. Our itinerary, which includes admission to a night club show, and a Westward Ho Funbook, beckons us to sample some of the fantastic live entertainment that is available in Las Vegas.

- CULTURE After you've recovered from your weekend in Las Vegas, you might want to try something on the educational, cultural side. Members of the WSU Alumni Association, and their guests, are boarding a jet leaving from Dayton on September 19th and heading for Washington, D. C. Our three-day tour of the city includes two nights at the Hyatt Regency in Washington, an evening performance at Kennedy Center, and a half-day sightseeing tour of the city. Washington should be an exciting city to visit during an election year. Our trip will return on September 21st.

- FOOTBALL

Our sixth trip of the 1980 season is a Football Weekend in Dearborn, Michigan, from October 31st to November 2nd. Visit the historical Greenfield Village and the Henry Ford Museum while you're in Dearborn, then branch out and explore the exciting "Motor City", Detroit; home of the Motown Sound. Take a bus into the city and visit the five glass towers of the Renaissance Center which ~onsists of shops, restaurants and a special events area. The Center is located along the riverfront of downtown Detroit. Try the Children's Museum, Belle Isle, the General Motors Technical Center or a tour of the Stroh's Brewery in Detroit. Windsor, Canada, is located right across the bridge from Detroit. Return from your journey in time to see the Ohio StateMichigan game on closed circuit T.V. in the Trophy Room of the Hyatt Regency in Dearborn.

- ROMANCE The last trip of the year for the Alumni Association and their guests is a Caribbean Cruise which departs Dayton on December 13th and returns December 20th. Escape the ice and snow of Dayton's winter season and join us for eight days of sun and sea air aboard our own "Love Boat" cruise. We hope that you can join us on one or more of the travel events of your choice. It is important to make reservations early. For further details contact the Alumni Affairs Office at 873-2620. Travel Committee Chairperson is Ruby E. Hurley.

PREZ SEZ I

Elsewhere in this publication you will note a HELP WANTED appeal. This is an extension of that thought. Your Alumni Association has a continuing need for your support. The key issue is that the WRIGHT STATE UNIVERSITY ALUMNI ASSOCIATION is your organization, your non-profit corporation. Its viability and growth are dependent upon your support -both financial and involvement - the crucial need in this stage of the Association's development is your involvement. This involvement can take many forms, such as: (a) participation in campus activities -- attend a lecture (a change of pace), a play (excellent), a basketball game (exciting), or commencement (June 7); (b) participation in WSU-AA's activities -the 1980 Reception for New Graduates (see accompanying article), a travel opportunity (how about Las Vegas?), or a Board of Directors Meeting (next one is May 17th in the University Center); or (c) assisting on one of the Association conunittees -Academic Affairs, Athletics, Awards, Communications (help produce the Alumnews), Cultural, Fund Raising (help with the annual Distance Race), Historian, Membership, Reception for New Graduates, Social (help plan the Annual Dinner Dance), and Travel. Admittedly, some of the Association events have not been blazing successes. This was not, however, for want of trying. The attendees and support personnel enjoyed themselves. Any lack of complete success was due to low attendance. A lack of involvement. Why not give us a try by making your June 13th T.G.I.F. reservation with the Association, and welcome the new graduates to the fold. Who knows, as a result, you may respond to the HELP WANTED ad.

WE HAVE MOVED The Alumni Affairs Off ice has changed locations, moving from the Executive Wing in Allyn Hall to the Lower Level of the University Center. Our new office is across from the Bookstore, and is Room 04& Although we have lost some space initially, we have hopes of some expansion in the future. All of the office operations are now in one office, and our phone number remains 873-2620. This new location will allow us to be more accessible to the students, and will help us in educating them as to who we are, and how we can help them, now and after they become Alumni. Our on-going programs such as: The Wright:stater (alumni bi-monthly news), Alumni Annual Fund Solicitation, upkeep on all 15,000+ alumni records, management of alumni files for departmental use ~ campus, and facilitating alumni needs, will be continued from this new site. As the focal point of the Alumni Association's involvement at Wright State, the Alumni Affairs Office will continue to assist the Association in its efforts in any way possible. Some of the on-going Association projects that are facilitated by our office are: the administration of the Award for Teaching Excellence, scheduling all committee meetings, supervising projects such as the Nutshell, America, and Graduate magazines and the production of the Yearbook, along with any other needs of the Alumni Association, we also handle the membership process through the Alumni Office. As in the past, we encourage all of you to contact us about any of the above projects or anything else we might be able to help you with.

SAIL AWAY! Again this year the WSU Alumni Association is sponsoring a sailing clinic for the average land-lubber. It will be held on Sunday, June 15, 1980, at 1:00 P.M. on Eastwood Lake. The cost is $5.00 per person or $7.50 per couple for instruction and boat rental. The program can only accommodate 20 individuals, so sign up early. Please contact Pat Moran at the Alumni Affairs Office, 873-2620, for specifics and reservations. Remember, wind power is an alternative energy source.

FIFTH ANNUAL WRIGHT STATE OPEN GOLF TOURNAMENT Folks, if you want to escape the mucho stampede at Holly Hills Golf Club in Waynesville, Ohio, sign up early for this big event, Friday, June 13, 1980. Jeff Carter, Chairman of the Wright State Alumni Association Athletic Committee, is proud to announce the Fifth Annual Wright State University Golf Tournament sponsored by Wright State's Alumni Association. This is the first year the Alumni Association solely sponsors the tournament. Tee times start at 10:00 A.M., with 80 slots open and since we would like to fill them all, spread the word. It's opened to all faculty, alumni and friends of Wright State University (on/off participants invited) and the cost, a mere $20.00 per player. If you're wondering what that $20.00 fee buys you with today's inflation, consider this -- golf fees, cart, prizes, refreshments (light lunch) with a small percentage of that donated to the Wright State University Golf Scholarship Fund. Ten dollars ($10.00) will be considered a tax deductible contribution. If you would like to attend and just enjoy a sociable day sans golf, the charge will be $10.00 ($5.00 of which is tax deductible). Look out, Sam! This is going to be a una derrota (runaway) day. Reservations and fees should be in no later than Friday, June 6, 1980, at the Alumni Office. Remember, tee times start at 10:00 A.M. and 4 individuals to a group every 15 minutes. Dust off your clubs, bring a buddy, and plan to play.
