    ALTOS EASYSTOREisanintelligentnetworkstoragesolutionforsmallandmedium-sizedofficesandhomenetworkenvironments. It providesupto2TBof harddiskspaceforbothsharedfilesandbackupsofyourcomputerharddisks,offeringanidealwaytodistributeandprotectimportantdata.

    Tomakeit easytobackupyourcomputerharddisks,thissolutionincludesDiskSafeExpress,asoftwareapplicationthatprovidesreliabledata protectionand

    rapiddatarecoveryintheeventofasystemcrashordiskfailure.WithDiskSafeExpress,youcanrecoveryourlocaldisksorpartitionswithouthavingtoreinstallorreconfiguretheoperatingsystemorapplications,dramaticallyshorteningrecoverytime.

    Getting Started 2Gettingstartedwithyourstoragesysteminvolvesthefollowinggeneralsteps:

    1. Setupyourstoragesystem.

    ThisinvolvesattachinganyoptionalUSBdevices,attachingthestoragesystemto yournetwork,andpoweringupthesystem.

    2. InstalltheStorageSystemConsoleonacomputerinthesamesubnetasyourstoragesystemandinitializetheharddisksonyourstoragesystem.

    Initializingtheharddisksinvolvesinstallingtheoperatingsystemandother softwarefromafileonyourinstallationCDtoeachoftheharddisksinyour storagesystem.(AltoseasyStore comes already configured)

    Forinformationaboutthisstep,refertoInitializingyourstoragesystem.

    3. AccesstheWeb-basedmanagementinterface (theManager)andlogin.

    Forinformationaboutthisstep,refertoAccessingtheManager andLoggingintotheManager.

    4. Addusers.

    This is necessary only if youre using local authentication mode and want to controlaccesstothesharedfolders,orif someusersinyournetworkuseLinuxorMacsotherthanthoserunningOSX.

    Forinformationaboutthisstep,refertoAddingusers.

    5. Createsharedfolders.

    Bydefault,thestoragesystemincludesasharedfoldernamedpublic.However, youmightwanttocreateothersharedfoldersaswell.Forexample,in anofficeenvironment, youmightwant tocreateasharedfolderforcompany policiesthateveryonecan view, and separate folders for confidential business documents that only selectedindividualscanvieworchange.Inahome environment, youmightwanttoset upseparatefoldersfordifferenttypesoffiles,likephotos,videos,ormusic.

    OnceyouhaveinstalledtheConsole(asdescribedinInstallingtheConsole),youcanusethefollowingproceduretostartit.

    Note: If thestoragesystemisnotdirectlyconnectedtoyourcomputerandyournetworkdoesnothaveaDHCPserver, youmustchangetheIP addressofyourcomputertousethesamesubnetasthestoragesystem.(Youcanchangeit backafteryouhaveconfiguredthestoragesystem.)

    Todo this,accessyour localareanetworkproperties. (Forexample, youmightright-click My Network Places and click Properties, and then right-click yournetworkconnectionand click Properties.) In the list, select Internet Protocol(TCP/IP)andclick Properties. The IP addresscanbe anyaddressbeginningwith 192.168.0 except 192.168.0.101, since thats the IP address used by thestoragesystem.Thesubnet maskmustbe192.168.0.1.ThenclickOKtoclose

    eachopendialogbox.

    Whenyouconfigurethestoragesystem(asdescribedinConfiguringyourstoragesystem),youcanspecifywhateverIP addressyouwouldlike thestoragesystemtouse. If theIP addressofthestoragesystemisinadifferent subnetthanyourcomputer, youmustalsospecifythegatewaytouse(asdescribedinChangingthenetworksettings).Thisensuresthatyou canmanagethestoragesystemfromanycomputerusingaWebbrowser(as describedinAccessingtheManagerusingaWebbrowser).ThenyoucanchangeyourcomputersIP addressbacktoitsoriginalsetting.

    TostarttheConsole:

    1. ClickStart-->Programs-->StorageSystemConsole.

    AssoonasyoustarttheConsole,it automaticallyscansthenetworkforstoragesystems.Thismighttakeafewminutes.Assoonasthescaniscomplete, theleft panedisplaysatreeviewof allthestoragesystemsit found.

    Initializingthedisks

    Once you have installed the Console (as described in Installing the Console),started it, and connected to the storage system (as described in Starting the

    Console),theSystemInitializationpagedisplays:

    If alltheharddiskshavenotbeendetected, orif youwanttoadd,remove, orre-orderthedisksatthistime,insertorremovethedisksoneatatimeandclickScanaftereachaction.

    1. InserttheinstallationCDintoyourcomputersCD-ROMdrive,typethepathtothefirmwarepackageintheFilenametextbox,andclickUpload.

    Alternatively, youcanclickBrowseandbrowsetheCDforthefirmware package.ThefirmwarepackageisthefileontheCDthatendsinthePKGfile extension.

    Note: Theoperatingsystemandstoragesystemsoftwareareinstalledon each

    disk in your storage system to ensure that the failure or removal of any one diskwill not cause the entire storage system to fail.

    Toacceptthedefaultsettings,clickNext. Otherwise,specifythedesiredsettingsandthenclickNext.

    WhenyouclickNext, theDiskConfiguration pagedisplays.(Theoptionsthatappearonthispagevary, dependingonthenumberof harddisksthatarecurrentlyinstalledinthesystem.)

    Note: It isstronglyrecommendedthatyouinstallalltheharddisksthatyou wanttouseinthestoragesystematthistime,sincechangingthenumberofharddiskslatercanrequirediskreconfigurationandpossibledataloss.

    Toacceptthedefault diskconfiguration(whichwillprovidethebestlevelof dataprotectionavailableforthenumberofharddiskscurrentlyinstalled),clickNext. Bydefault,alineardiskconfigurationisusedforasingleharddisk, RAID1is usedfortwoharddisks,andRAID5isusedforthreeorfourharddisks.

    WindowsandMacOSXuserscanbeput intogroups,whichmakesit easiertogiveseveralusersaccesstothesamesharedfolderat once.

    WhenyouclickUsersinthenavigationbarandclickGroupsintheleft pane,thepagedisplaysalistofallcurrentlyconfiguredgroups.WhenyouselectagroupintheGroupslist,themembersofthatgroupappearintheadjacent Memberslist.

    If youreusinglocalauthenticationmode,youcanaddagroup,modifythegroupmembership,orremovegroupsatanytime.If youreusingActiveDirectoryauthenticationmode,youcanviewthegroupmembershipbut notadd,modify, or

    Addingagroup

    Removingagroup
