Chapter 1 The sun glinted through the window, landing directly on the face of the sixteen year old girl passed out in her room, slowly rousing her from her slumber. Grumbling to herself, she reached out and grabbed the curt ain, closing it tight so she could enjo y just a few more minutes of shut eye. The clock blinked a steady 6:29, finally switching to 6:30 and letting off a loud chirping. A now very grumpy girl, Vriska being her name, reached out again and smacked the al arm with a dull thud, rolling onto her back and staring up at the ceiling. The sun barely shimmered through the dark blue curtains, giving the room a slight tint as Vriska stumbled out of bed and shambled to the adjoining bathroom, kicking to the side one of her magic eight balls. Turning on the light, she squinted for a second before her eyes adjusted, and turned on the water, splashing her face with some cold water and she peered at her reflection. The water dripped off her face slowly as she tussled with her long hair, trying to tame it, if only slightly. She grabbed her toothbrus h and paste, brushing her teeth as she walked around her room a little, turning the lights on as she wandered. Her room was rather messy, the floor dotted with various bits of clothes and other interests, like some of her roleplaying dice and broken magic eight balls. She used to pride herself on having the best of luck, but lately she was having the worst streak of luck. The magic eight balls were an old habit of hers, and whenever she got frustrated she would break one of the childrens toys. The roleplaying dice were from her days as a big FLARP player, but it had been a few years since she had donned her outfit and breaking the hopes and dreams of other players. A grin popped up as she finished brushing, taking in the mess she had left for herself to clean up from ye sterday. She kept meaning to clean up the area, but would get so absorbed into another one of her projects or just day to day activity the cycle would  just repeat... And repeat And repeat Putting the toothbru sh back in its holder, she went back into her bedroom and started to change, deciding for one of her trademark looks, a black t-shirt with her favorite symbol, a grey long-sleeved button down over it , and some jeans and her favorite red Conver se. As she walked over to plop on her bed, she grabbed her backpack and dragged it next to her, opening it up on the ground and making sure everything she wanted and needed was stored. A few books on the i dea of a Doomsday and technologies that cou ld bring it, her coursework, and a few other odds and ends shed need throughout the day. Off to the side in a little pocket was a simple note from a secret admirer, the contents having been read more than enough times to have been memorized. She had a few inklings as to who wrote it, but she needed just a few more clues before she could be certain. Playing with it in her hand, she caught herself in time from getting too absorbed in it for the thousandth time. Gently setting it back i n its hiding spot, she rushed off to get to school on time. Her feet hitting the blacktop outside her complex, she fiddled with her glasses for a moment as she watched some of the other students start to file into the school a couple of blocks away. She hurried up, barely making it in through the doors before the bell rang. Sighing to herself, Vriska dusted off her shirt and started off towards her locker. She had a feeling it was going to be a very l ong day.

Chapter 2

Bumping through the crowd, most of the people who know Vriska even slightly tended to give her some

space. She WAS the resident bitch of the school, partially of her own choosing and partially because of past issues. It wasn t HER fault that Tavros had fallen off that cliff during a FLARP session and paralyzedhim from the waist down. It wasn t HER fault that Terezi had been blinded due to an accident from a

strong sun ray. And it was DEFINITELY not her fault that Aradia had almost died! But that was all in thepast. Getting closer to her locker, a recognizable face popped out of the crowd and sneered at her semi-

jokingly. Oh, hello you meddling meddler. Sticking her tongue out at the girl, Vriska made it to her

locker, and started to fiddle with it as her friend talked to her.

Oh always the jesting Vriska. I just wished to have a discussion with you about what happened theother day with Karkat Vriska grabbed a book out and swapped it with one in her backpack, looking atthe girl as she closed her locker. See? Meddling! Meddle meddle meddle. I swear; if there was medal

given out to the best meddler in the world you d receive gold every year! The girl in question chuckled,

pushing a hair out of her face and fixing her dress as Vriska put the backpack back on and startedwalking. But anyway, no, Karkat was just being his crabby old self, being annoyed by my NEED TO BE

SUCH A HUGE FLAGRANT BITCH TO EVERY BREATHING THING IN A THOUSAND MILE RADIUS.Mimicking their mutual friend s voice rather well, Vriska s friend giggled a little, then coughed and said;

Be that as it may, you did not have to pick up Tavros and throw him across the room because he did

not want to switch sandwiches with you. Don t you think you pick on the poor lad just a bit too much?

Vriska stopped, leaning against a wall and looking over at a clock. She had another five minutes beforeshe had to cut this short, and she didn t hate talking to Kanaya at all . She was probably the only personin this school whom she didn t beat up or be an ass to on a regular basis. Over the years, those feelings

had developed a good bit, but sometimes it was hard to tell with Vriska what those feelings exactlywhere. Kanaya knew that all too well. It was just how Vriska was, and Kanaya admired it in an odd sortof way, and enjoyed Vriska s company, bizarre as it was at times. Yeah, maybe I could have laid off of

him a little, but whatever. He deserved it! The spineless boy can barely keep himself together, evenbefore the accident! Vriska chuckled a little, looking at Kanaya s dress for the day. A gentle red, partedin a way that it wrapped around her legs, and a black long sleeved shirt with an embroidered green

symbol that had been in her family s line for years, or at least that s what Kanaya had told Vriska.

Watching Vriska chuckle at Tavros pain, Kanaya raised an eyebrow and chided the girl out. You knowvery well that he s sensitive enough as is. I swear, if I didn t know you better I would be lead to believethat you had feelings for him. But be that as it may, you really should just let him have a chance to

breath once in a while. And I really must be off to class Vriska. Are we hanging out after school andduring lunch today as we had previously planned? Vriska nodded her head, pointing in the direction

she was about to head in. Yep. I ll see you at lunch. And tell Tavros to stop fearing for his life all thetime! Vriska laughed as she walked off, Kanaya shaking her head and walking in the opposite direction, her eyes casting a gentle glance at Vriska as she wandered off, her mind going into multiple directions at

once. Who knew what Vriska really felt

Chapter 3

Finally, the first three classes of the day were over. Stretching and striding out of the room, Vriska madeher way to the lunchroom. The second half of every school day was always better just because she hadpeople she knew around her. The first half of the day was filled with assholes that wanted nothing to do

with her, and she was perfectly ok with that. It was just they more often than not tried to make her classtime difficult, and she would have none of that. She almost had to shove a classmate s head through adesk to get her point across, but he picked up REAL quick and stopped. The look of terror in his eyes was

worth all the pestering before it.

Having an hour to eat lunch meant she could enjoy being a little lazy, casually moving herself along, casting dirty glances at passerby s, and just being an overall disturbance. It was the way she liked itsometimes. Grinning to herself, Vriska heard a deep voice booming a short ways in front of her

Aradia, I ve stated before how I feel. Please cease and desist with this lewdness! You know I don t like it

when you act this crass

Of course Equius would be sweaty from talking to Aradia. Since when was he ever not worked up bysomething? Vriska ignored them as she walked by them in the crowd, catching snippets of theirconversation.

Equius, I have every right to dress and talk as I want! If you really cared

to bring up our problem from before

better now. Calm down.

Fine.

Equius stormed off, covered in perspiration , as he called it, but Aradia stayed at her locker, looking

pretty tired from the conversation. Vriska loved knowing what was going on amongst the others, butshe d just find out later. Her stomach was calling out to her and she was going to answer it. Grabbing ameal from the lunch line, she looked around and saw Kanaya and the rest of their friends, or as close to

friends as she had, sitting at a table off to the side. Kanaya turned and waved at Vriska, who sighed andmade a beeline for the open seat right next to Kanaya, setting her tray down and taking her backpack

off. How were your classes Vriska? I hope they were not too much of a bother on you, as is normal.Vriska shrugged and took a bite of her sandwich, mumbling in between bites. They were fine. Nothing Ican t handle. Almost put an idiot into a desk though. The look on the kid s face was priceless.

Another of their friends overhead that and piped in, his slow and chill voice reaching across the table:Whoa there sistah, you can t just be putting people s heads all up into desks. A motherfucker best be

deserving that, yo. Gamzee grinned his lazy grin and took another swig of the Faygo that almost alwaysseemed to be by his side, his face covered in bits of clown paint and a black with purple polka-dotted

Was she really this nervous? She had noticed these feelings starting to develop a while ago, but hasnever had the fortitude to bring it to fruition. And now Vriska was going to show her the note that SHE

wrote and ask her to figure out who wrote it! Kanaya took a few deep breaths, trying to stabilize herself a little before she left. It was going to be hard enough to be calm later, so no point in freaking out now.She was so used to helping others with their relationship troubles, yet at the slightest idea of her own

she reacted so badly. Sighing to herself, she looked herself in the mirror and went to class.

Chapter 4

All the clocks seemed to be moving so slowly. It had to be a miracle that the final bell of the day rangwhen it did. Kanaya s classes had been satisfactory, and her peers calm and constructive. Her only class

with Vriska had been rather quiet for a change, only giving Kanaya the occasional silly face or snideremark at another student. The sudden emotional turn spooked her a little, for she wasn t sure if Vriskahad caught on to her yet or not. It would only be a matter of time though, so she would do her best until

she was found out.

She had left Vriska at her locker, listening to her go on about Tavros for the fifth or so time that day, andhad made it to her locker instead. Opening it up, she put as much as she could in it, and closed it up justas gingerly, looking at the pen that she had used to specifically write the note she had left. She quickly

threw it in the trash, for fear of incriminating evidence, and headed out of the school. She had alreadymade sure her dress was as neat as possible, her hair curled just so and her makeup on just delicateenough to highlight her best features.

She walked rather slowly, Vriska s apartment jutting just slightly away from the others in the area. It felt

like she was going to her hanging, but she was certain that Vriska would never harm her. Well, almostcertain. Why had Vriska been so calm after discussing the note? Did she already know? Oh dear

Standing in front of the door to the complex, Kanaya just waited, feeling her heartbeat and the windagainst her body, her mind in another place. She felt like an alien in her own body, watching a movie

unfold as her finger reached for the buzzer. Who dares bother the great Mindfang in her lair!? It sKanaya. Do you mind if you release the lock so I may walk in? Hearing a low sigh, and a click a secondlater followed by a Yep, cya in a few seconds, she felt her body just slowly walk up the stairs, autopilot

set as she went through all the possible scenarios she could think of in her head. She felt her heartpounding away in her chest as she knocked on Vriska s door, hearing from inside a Come in woman. Her arm felt like a thousand pounds as it reached out and grasped the cold handle, turning it in slow

motion as the door opened in front of her. Vriska was just lounging on the couch, laughing at whatever

was on the tv.

Kanaya calmed down a little, plopping her stuff down near the door and taking a seat on the other side

of the couch, looking in time to see some advertisement about Shamwow s finish up before it went backto its regular programming. Vriska promptly turned off the tv, standing up and stretching before lazilywandering into her room. Kanaya sat there, puzzled for a moment before seeing Vriska turn her head

and say, Are you gonna follow me in, or am I gonna have to drag you by the hem of your dress?Kanaya smiled, standing up and following her into her room.

Normally it was dirtier than this, but it seemed that Vriska had tidied it up a little before she had arrived,

much to her surprise. Vriska flopped out on her bed, and Kanaya sat on the end near the door, watching

Vriska move some book around to make room for a few from her backpack. So, what are we doing inyour room today? Studying? Browsing the internet for something humorous? Or are just going to talk as

we do sometimes? Kanaya fidgeted a little on the bed, trying to find a comfortable position, deciding toslid all the way in and rest her back against the wall. Vriska did the same, moving her pillows to the sideto rest her back against her headboard. Wellllllll, I figured we should start with that note! It s been

bugging me like craaaazzzzy! Vriska reached into her backpack, moving the zipper aside to get at thetiny little nook holding the note, sitting back up and opening it up. Here, let me just read it to you realquick. It s not too too wordy though.

To my darling Vriska,

Oh how I wish day to day that I could see you,

To just bask in your aura, to feel your touch on my bare flesh,

I would give the world to be with you for just a little while,

The two of us, and the silent joy that I would feel.

With all my love,

Your admirer <3

Vriska looked up at Kanaya, who was trying her very best to not give herself away. She had tried oh sohard to not be corny, but she feared that it had gone in that direction anyway. And it was even harder tohide the awkwardness with the letter s recipient right next to her! Well, it seems to me that whoever

wrote it must really like you, enough to say the word love. Vriska just nodded her head, setting thenote to the side and folding her arms. Well duh. But I have a pretty good idea of who could have wroteit. And who might be on this list? Perhaps Eridan? He has always tried to seduce you. Vriska burst out

laughing for a moment, wiping a tear from her eye as she spoke again. That windbag wouldn t go thisfar out of the way. He likes to say it all in person anyway. Oh, that does make sense.

Both of them sat in silence for a moment before Vriska looked at Kanaya and said so matter of factly,

How long. Kanaya blinked, her face putting on the best puzzled look she could muster, gently sayingPardon? right back. Vriska cocked an eyebrow, and shook her head slowly. How long have you been

in the red for me? I know it s you. Kanaya shook her head, her resolve shaking slightly as shestammered out a W-whatever do you mean? What makes you believe it was I who wrote you this love

letter? Vriska stood up, looking down at the now slightly blushing girl on her bed, her hands on herhips. Just spit it out damn t. You. Love. Me. I I Kanaya stammered very quietly, barely evenaudible to both parties, I love you Vriska.

Chapter 5

Silence filled the room as both of them processed those words. Kanaya continued to sit still, her face

bright green as she tried to pull herself together to say something else. Vriska on the other hand juststared at her, then shook her head and gave an odd look. You still haven t said how long. Looking up ather, Kanaya shrugged a little, muttering A couple of years now Vriska just nodded her head and sat

down on her computer chair, not looking at Kanaya. Filling slowly with dread for how she was going toreact, she walked over to Vriska and put her hand on Vriska s shoulder.

Kanaya. I need to think about this.

Kanaya just took a step back, her body slumping a little at the news. I did not think it would be such adevastating thing to you Vriska shrugged and simply stated Just go.

The sheer weight of those words made her go numb, her mind and will broken. She left silently,

grabbing her backpack on the way out, saying nothing to any passersby as she made the long hike backto her own apartment. Opening the door to her place, she threw her backpack onto the couch, and thenthrew herself onto her bed, a stream of tears igniting now that she was fully alone. Why had she been sofoolish as to write that note? She should have realized Vriska only saw her in the pale

She grabbed a hold of her plushy of a cartoon Mother Grub , which she had had for years, and just lostherself to her self-pity. This went on for a good half an hour, her pillow slowly becoming soaked with hertears, when out of the silence came a strange sound: A doorbell ringing.

Vriska sat in the silence in her apartment, the glimmer from the computer screen illuminating her facesoftly as she decided how to proceed. It hadn t been so much of a shock that Kanaya felt that way Itwas more that she had been so direct. Vriska sighed and twirled around in her chair, reaching for the

note on a pass around and reading it once more. She had also surprised herself with just how indirectand cold she had been. Vriska had seen the defeat in Kanaya s body as she walked away, her reflectionon the computer screen showing all that was needed. For the first time in her meager existence, Vriska

Serket was feeling regret.

She sighed again, standing up and putting the note in her pocket. She grabbed a magic eight ball,

casually tossing it against the wall, shattering it softly, the pieces twinkling in the light as they fell to theground. Still feeling down, she grabbed another one, shaking it and thinking her question in her head. It

had always been right when she was little, what said that it wouldn t start being right again? The littleoracle within slowly surfaced, with the simple words Yes .

Tossing it on her bed, Vriska briskly moved out of her room, slamming the door behind her as she lefther apartment. There was only one place she needed to go, and she needed to get there relatively

Page 8: Alt Alternia - Vriska&Kanaya

quickly before she lost the impulse. She reached Kanaya s apartment, and rang the doorbell just once. If she didn t answer, Vriska wouldn t know how to react.

Kanaya stood up slowly, brushing the tears out of her eyes as she walked to her front door. Who the hellwould be ringing it right now? She wasn t expecting anybody She opened the door just a little, andimmediately closed it again. Vriska. Here? Vriska cleared her throat and spoke up loud enough for her to

hear through the door.

Kan Open up damn t.

Why should I do such a thing? Are you here to fake an apology and get another chance to be adisaster to me?

No, damn t. Look, just let me in for a moment. And stop blubbering already.

Not with that attitude! And I was not blubbering! Now leave me be!

Oh gog damn t. She muttered to herself, working up the feeling before spoke again.

I m sorry.

Dumbstruck would be putting it lightly for how Kanaya reacted. She was apologizing And it soundedhonest. She opened the door slightly, a single eye peering through. Pardon? You re really gonna

make me say it again huh. Vriska looked down for a moment, and said quietly and truthfully I m sorry

Kan.

The door opened slowly, the two of them standing awkwardly at this development. Kanaya coughedsoftly, and moved to the side, saying softly You can come in. Vriska nodded, sitting down on the couch

and watched Kanaya close the door quietly, then sit right next to her. Kanaya s hands trembled slightly, showing the emotions that ran through her body, whilst Vriska remained like a statue. I m sorry that Imade the two of us this awkward. I should have just kept it to myself and things would be just fine. I m

surprised that you came over and apologized though So thank you for that. A single tear trickleddown Kanaya s face as she spoke, and silence fell over again.

Without any prior warning, Vriska took one of Kanaya s hands softly, giving it a gentle squeeze. I liked

the note you wrote. Kanaya blinked back a tear, turning her head to look at Vriska, who in turn turnedand gave the most honest smile she had ever made. Her heart began to race as she realized her handwas being held, and she blushed deeply as she squeezed back gently. You did? It wasn t terrible?

Vriska shook her head slowly. Not at all. You know how I am with emotions though Guess I m going tohave to work on them huh?

Page 9: Alt Alternia - Vriska&Kanaya

Kanaya s mind reeled. Was she implying what she thought she was implying? I don t think you need towork on much of anything. I think you are just fine as you are. Vriska grinned, and scooted a little bit

closer to her. Well, then you won t mind if I do this right? She leaned forward and gave Kanaya a littlekiss, short yet sweet. Both of their faces couldn t have been any darker with color even if they had tried.

V-Vriska. I had no idea Vriska chuckled and squeezed Kan s hand again, grinning like a very happy

young lady should be. Well duh. Didn t we just discuss this? Damn Kan, you re gonna have to work onyour listening skills if you think you and me are gonna work well. Not that we won t. We are prettyawesome. Kan started to cry again a little, and hugged Vriska tightly around the waist. Vriska stayed

still for a second, then wrapped her arms around the girl, and there they stayed for a time, enjoyingeach other s embrace.

I wonder how the school s gonna react to this. Vriska said contently, chuckling at the thought of theirfriends flipping out over this new development. Not that she cared either way. Fuck em if they hate it,

cool if they like it. She was just happy that Kan was happy again, and her as well. Looking down at Kan tohear her reaction, she noticed that the girl had passed out after all this excitement, her breathing heavy.

Her head slowly fell down her chest and into her lap, a look of pure joy and peace on it as she sleptaway. Vriska smiled to herself softly, and proceeded to do the same. Damn her couch was comfy.

Chapter 6

The sun gleamed through Vriska s windows as another day began, and Vriska stared up at her ceiling, aswas her way with waking up. Her mind was still a little fuzzy, and looking back on yesterday s events, she

couldn t be much happier if she wanted to. Hell, she actually wanted to go to school for once. Stretchingand hopping out of bed, she looked into a mirror and found a few lipsticks marks on her face and neck. She grinned, cleaning them up and toying with her hair, trying to poof it as much as she could. Grabbing

some clean clothes, she hopped into the shower, dried up and dressed and grabbed her backpack andhoofed it to the school.

Waiting outside the front doors was Kanaya, her face beaming with joy as she saw Vriska get close.Good morning darling, giving Vriska a soft kiss on the cheek. Yeah, good morning to you Kan, Vriska

said with a gentle smile, taking Kanaya s hand. You ready to surprise everyone? A little, yes. I mrather nervous about it, to be quite honest. Vriska chuckled, pulling Kan into the school. Don t be soworried! I ll beat up any idiots that bother us. She smiled, pressing up against Vriska as they walked

towards their respective lockers.

Oh look, it s Vris and Kan, what are yo- Are you two holding hands? Eridan stared at their coupled

hands, his body in slight shock from it. You are! What the hell is going on here? I mean Kan, I kinda hadsome idea of this, but you Vris? This has got to be a joke. Kanaya blushed, letting go of Vriska s hand

and looking off the side. Vriska just stared at Eridan, her lips pursed as she felt her annoyance rising. AndEridan just kept on going and going and going

I mean, seriously Vris, I thought you and I were so black for each other. But now you go and start doing

things with her? You know that I m the only one that can give you any real relationship. Look at her!

Page 10: Alt Alternia - Vriska&Kanaya

She s just so embarrassed and freaking out to the side, she can t even handle this, much less anythingelse. What the hell do yo-

Her fist made swift contact with his face in mid-sentence, his face caught up in a self-gratifying smug

look as his nose was broken and his body knocked to the ground. Her hand hurt a little, but the

satisfaction she gained was above and beyond that. He was promptly knocked out, his designer scarf wrapped around his face awkwardly and now stained with blood from his nose. Damn you piss me off

sometimes, she muttered to herself as she rubbed her fist and walked over to Kanaya, who had movedfurther to the side. A small crowd had gathered at this point to see who had been coldcocked, and noneof the students were even slightly surprised, leaving as quickly as they arrived, except for two who

dragged him to the nurse s office without a word.

Told you I d take care of assholes. Vriska reached and took hold of her hand gently, kissing her cheekgently, garnering a small smile from Kanaya. I just wish he did not need to be hit. But that is how you vealways handled these sorts of things. Vriska grinned, making a fist and shaking it happily. That s right!

Once they finished at their lockers, Kanaya gave Vriska a quick hug for the next few periods until lunch,

her dress skirting along the ground as she left. Vriska couldn t help but feel that Kanaya wasn t feeling alltoo well. She d have to ask her at lunch. Off to her first class though. She could worry about her later.
