HP Pulverizer

Raw coal enters the pulverizer thatis combined with classifier

tailings and then fed into thegrinding zone. The

grinding zone consistsof the driven bowl

and three rollassemblies. The rollassemblies arefree to rotate onthe coal bed. Aspring impartsthousands ofpounds of force tothe rotating

grinding roll.

This force causes the grinding roll to grind the coal and reduce it in size. Both thegrinding roll and the bowl segments will wear over time causing the pulverizer to lose grinding efficiency.

Replacement grinding rolls and segments areavailable in a variety of materials that willmaximize life and reduce downtime forchange out. Choosing the right grindingsurface material for your pulverizer will bedependent on your coal properties. Alstom’sexperts can help you make the right choice.

XWIN® Grinding Roll and Grinding

Segment Technology

Maintenance on any piece of equipmentaround your plant is a fact of life, but itdoesn’t have to be a continuous way of life.Pulverizer grinding rolls and grindingsegments wear over time. Downtime forreplacement of bowl grinding segments andgrinding rolls means that your equipment isnot available for operation.

Alstom offers bowl grinding segmentsand grinding rolls that exhibit awear life much greater thanchrome carbide overlaid grindingrolls. This significantly extendsthe pulverizer roll andgrinding segment life andsubstantially lowers themaintenance cost forreplacing thesecomponents.

Alstom’s pulverizer technologyis now combined with Xwin®cast product technology for bowlsegments and grinding rolls. Thistechnology developed byMagotteaux, Inc. has shown dramatic results on Alstom RB pulverizers and hasalso been applied to Alstom’s RS, RP, andRPS shallow bowl pulverizers.

Xwin is a registered trademark of Magotteaux, Inc.

Xwin® grinding roll showing “honeycomb” design

Magotteaux utilizes a metal matrix composite(MMC) to produce the Xwin® grindingsegments and grinding rolls that are designedto be superior to any other grinding roll orgrinding segment currently offered.

This composite combines the extreme wearresistance of ceramic with the mechanicalproperties of cast alloys. MMC is composed ofceramic particles imbedded and reinforcedwith a high chrome alloy evenly distributed ina honeycomb design.

Use of the new MMC results in reduced wearand a higher resistance to breakage overtraditional monometallic grinding rolls.

The Xwin® grinding roll demonstrates aconsiderable improvement in wear life, better fineness, decreased spillage, lowerpulverizer amps and reduced wear on theclassifier components. The overall benefits are improved performance, improvedefficiency and reduced operating andmaintenance costs.

Grinding Roll Hard

Surfacing Technology

As an alternative, grinding rolls can beresurfaced using COMBUSTALLOY™ ChromeCarbide Weld Wire (CE52 & CE92) or hybridheavy tread, a tungsten carbide weld.Applying the best wear material in thehighest wear areas helps assure the longestlife from the roll while keeping costs down.

Summary

Alstom offers a variety of options forreplacement grinding rolls and grinding rollsurfaces. Whether you choose a completegrinding roll replacement or elect resurfacingthere are several wear-resistant options thatare designed to extend the wear life of thegrinding roll. The results include betterfineness, decreased spillage, loweringpulverizer amps and wear on the classifier components. Your benefits areimproved performance, improved efficiencyand reduced costs.

FLOW-PRO™ Vane WheelVane wheel technology was originallypioneered by Alstom and has been in use for over 25 years.

Prior to the use of a vane wheel Alstompulverizers utilized three fixed openings toadmit primary air to the area above the bowl.Coal settling out, high wear areas and poordistribution to the classifier were all factorsthat led to the advent of the vane wheel.Through careful computational flowmodeling (CFM) Alstom has beenable to continuously improve thevane wheel assembly.

As illustrated in the CFM forthe original vane wheeldesign, there are lowvelocities in the upperbody with good mixing inthe mid and upper bodyarea, good classificationin the lower body areaand even distribution tothe classifier area. The model alsoillustrates that there arehigh velocities abovethe vane wheel vanesthat can lead to localizedwear and recirculation ofcoal/air in the vane area.

9

Alstom has developed a new primary classifier, the low profile FLOW-PRO™ Vane Wheel, to manage the critical air andcoal mixing occurring around the outerdiameter of the bowl. The FLOW-PRO™ Vane Wheel retains the time proven flowpatterns through the pulverizer with reducedwear and greater simplicity.

This is achieved by lowering the deflectorliners of the classic vane wheel from the zonewhere the coal has been entrained by theairflow down to the elevation where the airmeets the coal. The lowered deflector linerscatch the primary air (PA) flow while it’s stillclean and redirects it inward over the bowlrim where it entrains the coal. The coal isrolled immediately back over the bowl anddecelerated to allow the large particles to drop back to the table for furtherpulverization. The remaining smaller coalparticles are directed up through the separatorbody at relatively low velocity for reducedwear, enhanced drying and improved classifier efficiency.

• Reducedmaintenancecosts

As illustrated here,the new FLOW-PRO™

Vane Wheel incorporatesa resized deflector along with

high-grade liner materials for thedeflector, vane and wing tips. The

CFM and the force and velocity analysisillustrate more uniform flow velocities thatsubstantially reduces localized wear.

Advanced Static ClassifierThe final path the coal takes before leavingthe pulverizer is through the classifier section. While using well-maintained grindingrolls and grinding ring segments and ensuring the correct velocities throughthe vane wheel are critical to pulverizerperformance, the classifier is equallyimportant to pulverizer performance.

Alstom’s advanced static classifier (ASC)has been developed through computerflow modeling at its Power PlantLaboratory. The ASC has beenmodeled to improve classifierefficiency. Better finenesscontrol has been achievedwhile maintaining the same pressure drop.Fineness testing hasproven that the amountof 50 mesh particles has been reduced.

For high wear areas on the ASC, Alstomoffers such options asDYNAWEAR II™Vacuum BondedCeramics, AR Plate and CROWN 700™Castings. The ASC iscurrently available for allAlstom pulverizer typesand sizes.

The ASC is designed to provide better finenessclassification and improved efficiency throughcalculated window height and lengthdimensions, an extra deflector ring and newprofile classifier blades. The improved finenessoccurs at the same classifier settings withlower pressure drops. The ASC’s componentsare supplied in wear-resistant materialsresulting in increased service life.

Horizontal Pivot Scraper Upgrade

Alstom’s horizontal pivot scraper assembly is an improvement over other pyrite scraperdesigns because of enhanced operation andservice life. It is easier and safer to install and maintain, and can be installed as areplacement with little or no rework of existing parts.

Traditional scraper assemblies use verticalmounted bushings that tend to wear andallow the scraper to droop and wear directlyon floor liner. Alstom’s design moves the pivotfrom the floor area to a horizontal positionabove the mill bottom.

20

The improved assembly support allows thescraper to do a better job clearing debris fromthe mill bottom. The torsion spring providesenough resistance to move debris from themill bottom, but also allows the arm to foldback over larger immovable objects such thatneither the assembly nor the rest of the millare damaged. The new horizontal scraperdesign eliminates the task of removing theentire assembly as a unit from the mill toreplace wear parts.

The original scraper design had an assemblyweight of about 150 pounds, the new design allows individual components

weighing about 30 pounds to be replaced. This means quicker, safer servicing of

the scraper assembly.

Split Bearing Race Retainer

Alstom’s split bearing race retainer can beinstalled without costly bowl hub removal. Itis supplied in two halves that are clampedaround the main vertical shaft. Two trim drivebrackets are supplied with the split bearingretainer and are located below the bowl hubto prevent the split bearing retainer frommoving upward.

The inner race retainer prevents the innerrace from creeping up the main shaft. Thesplit bearing retainer also functions as a wearsleeve for the oil seal. The oil seal no longerruns against the main vertical shafteliminating any wear on the main verticalshaft that could lead to costly down time forshaft replacement or repair.

The double upper bearing assembly replacesthe single upper journal bearing with twotapered roller bearings. This improved designincreases the radial capacity design of theupper bearing and reduces thrust loads on thelower bearing resulting in an increased life forboth bearings.

The double upper bearing assembly wasdesigned through an intensive engineeringanalysis of pulverizer journals under actualoperating conditions. Utilizing field datacollected from several pulverizers, journalloadings were accurately determined by

computer analysis. This allowed the finalbearing selection and location to be

optimized. As a result theloadings for both the upper

and lower bearings were decreased.

The double upperbearing journaldesign alsoincludes improvedoil and air sealsfor protectionagainstcontamination of the journal

bearing lubricant.

The double upperbearing journal is

available as an upgradeto an existing journal

assembly. It can also besupplied as part of a new journal

Journal Spring Rebuilds and Upgrades

Alstom offers customersa systematic method forrebuilding boiler relatedequipment andreturning thisequipment to service.Alstom’s RegionalService Centers are thefocus of this programcombining their extensiveinventory, rebuild portfolioand proven processes toprovide a unique service.

The R3 program is based onRebuilding, Restocking andReplacing components.

RebuildingComplete disassembly and inspection of acomponent takes place. Worn out parts arereplaced and components repaired. Thecomponents are rebuilt to strict proceduresand tolerances. Upgrades to components can be included.

R3 Component Rotation ProgramsRestockOnce a rebuild is completed the component isplaced in the customer’s exclusive stockinventory at a Regional Service Center nearestthe plant.

ReplaceRebuilt components are returned to acustomer when needed to replace a similarcomponent requiring service. The replacedcomponent is then sent back to the Service Center for rebuilding and to continue the process.

Rebuilding is an economical alternative tobuying new equipment. Rebuilt equipment iskept at an Alstom location until needed freeingup plant storage space. The process eliminatesdown time waiting for a component to berebuilt and placed back in service. Pulverizercomponents that are available in this programinclude journal assemblies, grinding rolls, gearboxes and worm shaft assemblies.

Alstom Service Centers can rebuild journalsprings and incorporate upgrades designed tosuit your operating requirements.

Alstom offers an upgraded journal pressurespring for 963 – 1003 RP pulverizersequipped with the small separator top. Theyhave been designed to prevent failure of thiscomponent from stress fatigue.

A pressure spring failure leads to unevenloading on the bowl assembly, and ifuncorrected, will lead to the failure of themain vertical shaft.

The spring itself has been redesigned to lowerstress on each coil at the same compression.A new bellows protects against coal leaks andallows greater visibility of spring oscillation.
