Methodology & Resources

We used the 13th FIS points list of 2014/2015 to acquire data for each event, focusing on ages 16-22 for current world cup top 30 as well as current juniors within this age range

Our focus was on world rank as it is a more consistent unit of measurement than age rank and FIS points

Because FIS no longer allows points to be scored at 15 years old, we began our analysis at 16 to maintain consistency throughout generations

When aggregating world rank data, we often highlighted the 25th percentile (75% of the top 30 fall within) as a benchmark for where an athlete’s world rank should be at each age to remain within the world cup pipeline.

We used an expanded version of the USSA age table to ensure consistency of ages in each season, regardless of past age class systems. For example, looking at the table below we can verify that an athlete born in 1989 would have been age 16 (first year FIS for purposes of our study) in season ending 2006.
