Cultural heritage and ecological innovation are not opposites but go togetherintrinsically: the alpine building and settlement patterns contain an endogenouswisdom that can teach us the principles of dealing with the regionally diverseconditions of mountain in ways that are sustainable and preserving resources

From vernacular architecture we can get knowledge and skills that help us tocomplete and modify currently applied standard methods of energy saving so thatthat they can be integrated into the local architecture instead of standardizing ordestroying it – as is often the case.

The resulting solutions help to preserve the beauty of the traditional alpinearchitecture and at the same time continue the process of long term adaptation andinnovation out of which it originated. Simultaneously they can help us to manage thelarge number of pending renovations in the Alpine Space and to make themaffordable

OBJECTIVES

Renovations performed according to AlpHouse quality criteriaare oriented towards two central aims:

>> Preservation and development of the cultural heritage ofthe Alpine Space, as represented by vernacular architecture, traditional settlement structures, regional materials and craftstechniques

>> Optimization of energy efficiency and overall life-cyclecosts of buildings and settlements, achieved by applying state-of-the-art technologies and detailed knowledge on ecology andspecific local conditions.
