Purpose of Project

Introduction Imagine a life without computers, Internet, or cell phones--no emails to read, no people to call or Skype, and no Facebook to scroll through. While technology is a privilege many take for granted, this is the life many senior citizens across America experience today, often with the consequence of not being able to connect and stay in touch with their families and friends. In fact, even if senior citizens had access to these technologies, many of them have no idea on how to use them. Josh Seides and Gavin Ng noticed this scenario seemed to be a common issue among senior citizens, and in 2012 he decided to start the non-profit organization Technocademy to address this pervasive problem. Exploration of the Problem Each year, senior citizens nationwide face an immense challenge contacting their family and friends because of their lack of knowledge in using technology. Statistics show sparse technology usage among American seniors:

only 59% of people over 65 use the Internet

of those that do use Internet, only 34% use social networking sites

only 30% of people over 74 use the Internet, 65% lower than the percentage of those age 18 to 33

77% of senior citizens own a cell phone, more than a dozen percent lower than the national average

Solution to the Problem Josh Seides started Technocademy, Inc. in his freshman year of high school in 2012. It is now a full-fledged, 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that has become regionally and nationally recognized for the services and resources it provides to senior citizens and veterans. With the marketing consultant Gavin Ng, it has recruited over 250 high school volunteers, including members of Alpharetta High School FBLA chapter, and other service clubs, to help teach classes and provide 1-on-1 tutoring sessions to senior citizens.

1.1: There is a deficit in senior technology use.

Mission: To promote digital literacy and awareness across the senior community. Philosophy: Technocademy is about giving back to the community and enabling our senior citizens to utilize the expanding modern technology to connect with loved ones. Niche: For Technocademy, the niche in the market is helping senior citizens who live in senior homes and would like people to come onsite and teach directly through individualized 1-on-1 lessons, classroom setting, with additional access to online resources. The empowerment of high school students is also a core tenet. Motto: Inform. Inspire. Imagine. Purpose of Project With the creation of Technocademy, high school students, including members of the AHS FBLA chapter, are able to meet a need in the community with their volunteering efforts. The motto of the organization (Inform. Inspire. Imagine.) succinctly displays the core values and purposes of the project:

Inform: One of the main purposes of the partnership between Technocademy and AHS FBLA is to teach senior citizens about new technology. Whether the topic involves cell phones, iPads, or Facebook, the service project is focused on exposing senior citizens to the untapped potential technology can bring into their lives. It has allowed them to connect with loved ones, younger people, and the world.

Inspire: There is often a sense of mystery and hesitation for senior citizen when faced with the topic of technology. Another goal of the organization is to take away that fear and encourage senior citizens to use technology to reconnect with their families and friends all over the world.

Imagine: Not only is the purpose of Technocademy to teach senior citizens about technology, but it is also to help them explore the endless possibilities they have with new innovations, whether that may be video conferencing their family members through Skype or listening to nostalgic music loaded onto their iPad.

Statement of Project Goals With the overarching purpose of the service project being to teach senior citizens residing in senior living centers about technology, there are many goals, both numeric and qualitative, that were set as benchmarks. Numerical Goals

The goal set for the number of senior citizens to be educated was 350.

This number was derived from careful research and thought about the number of senior citizens that could be affected at each type of location and facility. Factors considered included: geographical proximity of centers, senior population in each center, and available AHS FBLA volunteers.

The goal set for the number of senior living homes served was 10 facilities.

This goal was calculated based on the number of homes that were located a reasonable distance from Alpharetta High School. Furthermore, this number is sufficient for achieving the previous goal of helping 350 senior citizens.

The goal set for the number of people nationwide helped through Technocademy resources was 10,000 senior citizens.

This goal was calculated based on the number of senior homes AHS FBLA hoped to reach in partnership with the major senior living home companies and other organizations around the country. Qualitative Goals

Make Technocademy an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) organization

Involve the whole community in the project

Partner with AHS FBLA and its members

Solve the problem of digital illiteracy among senior citizens and expand to veterans

Get featured in regional and national news outlets to gain exposure

Partner with local and national businesses and corporations Service to the Community and its Citizens To solve the widespread problem of senior citizen digital illiteracy, Technocademy with the efforts of its volunteers, ran a special program called the “School Series” (originally the “Summer Series”). Through this program, members of AHS FBLA traveled to individual senior living centers and taught the senior citizens lessons on technology concepts and uses that would help them to better communicate with their families. Along with the School Series, AHS FBLA also became involved with many of the national projects from Technocademy, including Operation T-CUP (instructional DVDs) and The Technocademy Pocket Guide. AHS FBLA plans to continue running the School Series throughout the upcoming school years and during the summers. People of all generations, ranging from teenage volunteers, to adult supporters, to senior participants, were brought together under a common cause: to teach technology to senior citizens in need.

Planning and Development of Project Community Service Project Meeting At the end of May 2014, Josh Seides and Gavin Ng met with other members of AHS FBLA to discuss the possibility of creating a segment of Technocademy exclusively for AHS FBLA volunteers. At the meeting it was decided an Advisory Board would be selected. Members include:

Ted Seides (CFO & President at hedge fund firm)

Michael Nance (Social Studies Department Chair at Alpharetta High School)

Allison Tubiak (TAG Department Chair at Alpharetta High School)

Dr. Tracy Mitzner (Psychology Researcher at Georgia Tech)

Dr. Susan Hogan (Consultant at Deloitte; former professor at Emory University)

Daniel Rothenberg (Consultant at UBS Financial Services) The Board was created to ensure the community service project would run successfully and smoothly. A Volunteer Coordinator, Rohan Bagga, was also appointed to oversee lessons. Gavin Ng was also appointed as a marketing specialist. At the meeting, specific dates were laid out for the start of the Summer Series (1-on-1 lessons involving high school volunteers and senior citizens). The team also presented its business plan for the organization, with numerous edits coming from other members. It was decided the project would begin on the week of June 9 because many AHS FBLA members would have more time to devote to volunteering if the program began over the summer. 501(c)(3) Status Application All nonprofit organizations have a choice of whether or not to become a “tax-exempt,” or 501(c)(3), organization, meaning all donations given to the organization would be tax deductible. The team decided to apply and file all the paperwork with the IRS on behalf of Technocademy, Inc. in order to attract more donors. The application was submitted in June 2014 and approved on July 31, 2014. Creation of Educational Materials In order to conduct successful lessons at the senior centers, informational PowerPoint presentations and paper handouts had be created. The team created 7 different PowerPoints and 12 different handout “tutorials” that were then used by AHS FBLA volunteers. The lessons covered the following topics:

Introduction to Technology: basic course; defines terminology and usage

Internet and Online Safety: how to use email, browsing; how to stay safe online

Email: coverage on specifics on how to use email to communicate with others

Social Media: how to safely and effectively use Facebook, Twitter

Skype and FaceTime: how to use video conferencing to communicate long-distance

Cell Phone Boot Camp: lesson on mobile devices; contacts, calling, receiving, texting

iPhone and iPad: information on specific apps and uses for these Apple products

Kindle and Nook: helping users to download, purchase, and view books These topics were specifically chosen because of their applicability to the overall purpose of Technocademy: to help senior citizens use technology to communicate and stay connected with family and friends. Contact with Senior Living Centers After the initial legal filings were taken care of, Josh Seides began to research senior living facilities within the vicinity of AHS. In the summer of 2014, he made contact with 10 different centers, pitching the idea of having high school students volunteer their time to teach the senior community about technology. All 10 centers agreed and scheduled dates for lessons with Technocademy. With careful consideration of volunteers, certain dates for lessons were selected based on the availability of AHS FBLA members. After deciding on which senior centers were logistically close to the high school and classes began, Technocademy's presence began to grow and spread quickly across the Atlanta area. Brochures and Flyers Brochures and flyers were created to pique the interest of senior living centers and individual senior citizens for the community service project. Furthermore, they were also made to attract potential company and individual donors to support the project. Different designs were made based on the audience: (1) bright, vibrant colors based on mainly on pictures for senior citizens and centers and (2) conservative colors based mainly on text and statistics for companies and donors. All versions of brochures and flyers emphasized the important of Technocademy’s mission and goals.

Volunteer Organization With the increasing number of volunteering opportunities opening up for Technocademy and its volunteers, it was necessary to find a way to mobilize and organize the more than 310 members of AHS FBLA. In order to do so, a Google Doc was created that was open to all AHS FBLA members to sign up for open time slots. Eventually, this format was replaced with a SignUp Genius form that allowed for automatic reminders and more standard organization and collection of data.

Contact with Major Companies In anticipation of the massive Operation T-CUP project in October (see in “Implementation of Project”), the team reached out to the national companies to discuss future plans for the project. Through funding and partnerships, a logistical plan of distribution was created to effectively impact as many seniors and veterans as possible through the assistance of AHS FBLA volunteers. Some of the following companies or organizations were reached for grants and exposure:

Cisco: Cisco became a partner of Technocademy to provide “resell commission.” If a senior citizen helped by Technocademy ever bought from Cisco under the direction of Technocademy, the organization would receive a percentage of the transaction.

Other Resell Partners: Google, Microsoft, HP, IBM, Kingston, Symantec, Seagate, VMWare, Adobe, Lenovo

United Way: Technocademy contacted various local chapters of United Way from across the country to help distribute packages for Operation T-CUP. These chapters connected Technocademy to local centers for seniors. Some of the chapters we partnered with include: Charleston (SC), Huntsville (AL), Salem (OR), Las Vegas (NV), and Jersey City (NJ).

Disney/ABC Television Group: As part of the 2014 Summer of Service Award, the Disney/ABC Television Group gave Technocademy a $1,000 grant.

YMCA: Technocademy began to conduct 1-on-1 lessons in various YMCA centers.

2.2: A SignUp Genius form used for automated volunteer signups and reminders.

Implementation of Project Website One of the most crucial and successful steps in the planning and development of the community service project was building Technocademy's website (www.technocademy.org). A specific section of pages on the website is devoted the AHS FBLA’s School Series program.

Projects and Programs On June 9, Technocademy announced its partnership with AHS FBLA to promote the Summer Series and eventually the School Series. Immediately after, Technocademy began to conduct lessons with the help of AHS FBLA volunteers. AHS FBLA members used the SignUp Genius to register for volunteering sessions. In the beginning, classes were held once or twice a week for the first month, but quickly grew to three or four times a week.

Summer Series Technocademy began in 2014 with the Summer Series, the program designed to teach senior citizens technology (cell phones, Facebook, iPhone, email, etc.). This ran from June 9 - August 8 and involved AHS FBLA members throughout the process. Lessons took place on all days during the week (from Monday to Friday), ranging from the morning into the afternoon. Senior center locations volunteered at include Benton House of Alpharetta, Benton House of Johns Creek, Sunrise of Johns Creek, Providence, Emeritus of Big Creek, Ivy Hall, Cottonwood Estates, and Park Place of Alpharetta.

School Series

3.1: The website generates over 3K-5K unique monthly visitors.

After the school year began, the Summer Series was replaced by the School Series, a program with the same objective but in a different timeframe, spanning from August 9 - present. Lessons are mainly conducted on the weekends during the school year. Lessons were held at community recreation centers (e.g. Park Place, YMCA, and mainly involved 1-on-1 sessions, allowing seniors to ask the questions they needed help with. Advice mainly centered on helping participants use technology to connect with family members.

Operation T-CUP On October 25, 2014, AHS FBLA volunteered with Technocademy for the biggest project of the year. Up until that point, only senior citizens in the Atlanta area had been impacted. Through a partnership with USA WEEKEND, Technocademy took this project to a national level. “Technology Care Packages” were mailed out to centers across the country that included a DVD tutorial with various technology lessons and access to online tutorials and resources. Technocademy also teamed up with many major companies (listed in “Planning and Development”) to increase the project’s reach. This ongoing project to date has helped a projected 100,000 seniors in such cities as Las Vegas (NV).

Exploration Labs In December 2014, Technocademy began to develop “Exploration Labs,” or guided tutorials that covered more advanced concepts such as Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and Netflix. These labs were designed for independent learners who wanted exposure but not complete direction. The intent of this segment was to help seniors and veterans who already knew the basic concepts but desired more advanced material.

The Technocademy Pocket Guide In January 2015, Technocademy announced that it would be releasing a 68-page Pocket Guide that included step-by-step instructions on basic technologies, including Internet, email, social media, cell phone, and iPhone/iPad. Each guide would be printed in full color and given to seniors and veterans across the nation.

Tips of the Week At the beginning of 2015, AHS FBLA and Technocademy decided to create a new segment called "Tips of the Week" in which a few tips relating to various technologies would be sent (through email) to seniors, veterans, care providers, and others across the country on a weekly basis. Since then, the project has amassed a large subscriber base. Some of the topics for "Tips of the Week" were collected from feedback gathered from the 1-on-1 sessions by AHS FBLA member volunteers (see below).

3.2: The Pocket Guide, an AHS FBLA idea, has generated widespread interest in the community.

New Projects Currently, the following initiatives are being developed: an iPhone/Android/Kindle app, Digital Dose (a medical program to aid seniors in remembering dosages), CodeKids (teaching middle school students technology like programming) Social Media In order to spread the word about Technocademy and keep AHS FBLA members up to date on the latest events and lessons, a Facebook account for Technocademy was created. On the page, information included: phone number, email, website, important news, and upcoming information. This allowed a simple way for all the AHS FBLA members to stay in sync with the community service project. Social media pages have also been created on: Twitter, YouTube, and LinkedIn. Support/Donations As a result of becoming a 501 (c)(3) organization, Technocademy started to devote more resources to the improvement of the project as time progressed. New technology equipment was purchased, including computers, cell phones, and iPads, in order to allow a more user-friendly setting during lessons. There have been many sources for grants and funding:

YSA

Disney

ABC

Fitzberg Foundation

Individual donors (from many states across the US) Drawing in Senior Citizens Once contact had been made with the activity directors at the various senior living centers, Technocademy still had to figure out how to get senior citizens interested in the service project. Josh Seides, Gavin Ng, and many AHS FBLA members went in to all the different senior centers to speak directly with the senior citizens, often as a “guest speaker” to give a presentation pitch, in the hopes of drumming up interest among the senior citizens. Expansion to Veterans Technocademy realized that seniors were not the only ones needing help regarding technology. To honor the country’s veterans, Technocademy began to reach out to veteran support organizations for

partnership and offer Technocademy’s resources (DVDs and tutorials) to veterans in need. One example is the Veterans Empowerment Organization. Feedback Throughout the progression of the Summer Series and School Series, Technocademy continued to adapt and adjust midway in order to ensure that it was still meeting the needs of the senior citizens. In order to do so, surveys were given to gather data and feedback from seniors regarding lessons and 1-on-1. This helped Technocademy and its volunteers to modify the program implementation midstream to better suit the needs of the senior citizens. Research with Collegiate Professors To further perfect the teaching methodology of lessons, Josh Seides contacted professors from Georgia Tech (Human Factors and Aging Lab) and Emory University to help ascertain the most effective factors for maximizing engagement level among older adults. The team worked on the research with the professors. These findings were then implemented into all of Technocademy’s programs with the help of the AHS FBLA volunteers. Impact and Benefits to the Community Numerical Impacts

(Senior Citizens Helped 1-on-1) Goal: 350 vs. Actual (See graph below)

(Number of Seniors Helped Through Sent Materials) Goal: 10,000 vs. Actual (See graph above) Qualitative Impacts

Senior citizens received premium education they otherwise would not have had. With the availability of technology training programs somewhat limited and costs relatively high, Technocademy has offered a creative alternative to senior citizens to become part of the digital revolution free of charge. Technocademy's services have greatly benefited seniors and assisted living residents who cannot otherwise afford technology education. In fact, Technocademy’s services have been a new, enjoyable experience for underfunded assisted living centers and other seniors.

Senior citizens were inspired. Senior citizens were motivated by Technocademy volunteers' enthusiasm and drive. Throughout the service project, senior citizens have made it a priority to take advantage of the unique opportunities Technocademy has offered to them.

Benefits to the Community

All ages and generations are now connected. With many new senior citizens and veterans engrossed in the new world of technology, Technocademy has been able to serve as the missing link to the puzzle separating senior citizens from the rest of the world. Now, senior citizens can connect with their family and friends across the country, visit with their grandchildren via video conferencing, and even schedule new visits--virtual and live--with far away family members.

Senior citizens can experience a long lost facet of life: family.

Senior citizens in senior living centers often are immobilized from leaving the center, let alone traveling across the country to visit loved ones. Technocademy has been able to use technology to help them keep in touch in other ways. Through extensive assistance in cell phone, iPhone, iPad, Skype, social media, email, and others, Technocademy participants are enabled to stay connected.

Senior citizens can enhance their lifestyle with technological advances. Not only can senior citizens communicate with their family members now, but they can also have access to a wide range of innovations that continue to develop and understand how to use them. From iPad games to new types of phones or computers, senior citizens are able to take full advantage of these new technologies because of the help they receive from Technocademy's volunteers. Testimonials from Impacted Senior Citizens

"Their help was great. They answered so many questions and gave helpful hints with patience, understanding, and kindness. They listened to what we wanted to know, and then led us on a process of discovery for the answers. They gave just enough information without having the learning become overwhelming. We learned so much. Bravo to Technocademy! …They are very knowledgeable about their topics but they can bring the information down to the students' level to enhance understanding. We are so happy to have found them. … It's a wonderful resource for anyone interested in broadening his/her learning in the tech field. We highly recommend Technocademy.” ---Jane S.

"What a great program for assisted living generations. I am 94 years old but still sharp! [Technocademy] was very helpful and students are able to answer my questions.” ---Carl L.

Impact on Alpharetta High School FBLA Members and Evaluation

Leadership: Leading and speaking at lessons filled with 30+ senior citizens can be very intimidating. Volunteers, including AHS FBLA members, developed a new sense of taking control of situations as well as how to organize massive projects like Operation T-CUP.

Compassion: After completing the service project, many volunteers felt a desire to continue volunteering. Through their service, AHS FBLA members began to understand the true meaning of giving back to the community.

Accomplishment: Through helping others, many volunteers felt connected to their community for the first time by helping others in a needed area.

One volunteer commented, “It was so heartwarming and inspiring to learn about seniors from being able to teach them.” The project as a whole has been a significant success in all regards. Initial expectations for seniors impacted has been exceeded many times over. New programs on a national level have attracted the interests of companies, organizations, and individuals interested in Technocademy’s cause and AHS FBLA’s cause. AHS FBLA members have truly realized what it means to serve the community and are excited to continue this project for many years to come.
