Tragic tale of the life of indentured Indians in SA HISTORICAL ROMANCE: Vignesh Sankarran is one of the actors in the movie White Gold. White Gold Starring: Madhushan Singh, Mishqah Parthiephal, Rory Booth Directed by: Jayan Moodley Genre: Historical romance By MICHELLE SOLOMON I N 1860 the British ship Truro sailed from Calcutta, India, for Natal. On its deck, the ship was carrying the first of South Africa’s indentured Indian labourers, and with them started a long, beautiful and tragic love story on our country’s shores. The film White Gold, a joint venture be- tween South African production houses African Lotus Productions and Serendipity Productions, tried to capture the arrival of these first labourers. The story begins in a small village in India, told via narration by the film’s protagonist, Shankar Naidoo (played by Madhushan Singh). The viewer is introduced to the young Shankar and his three friends, who seem- ingly live a life of innocent bliss in the rural setting. While the pastoral paradise of the Indian village sets an apt background for what is to come, it is hardly historically accurate in a broad sense. History tells us Indian citizens were enticed to South Africa because of debilitating poverty in their home country – many, if not most Indians who came to South Africa did so as a harsh necessity. While running amok in the village, Shankar is struck by a passing wagon and falls unconscious. When he wakes up, he stares into the eyes of a beautiful girl, Noor Jehan Farman (played by Mishqah Parthiephal). It’s love at first sight for the young Indian man, and the film soon sets the tone of two star-crossed lovers destined never to be together – Shankar is Hindu and Noor Je- han is Muslim. While it is interesting that this religious conflict is brought up by director and first- time scriptwriter Jayan Moodley, I felt it could have been explored in more detail. Those viewers unfamiliar with the histor- ical relevance of this conflict in India might not have grasped the implications of the inter-religious relationship between Shankar and Noor. When Shankar’s friends tell him stories of riches and beauty about South Africa, which they heard from a British labour recruiter, Shankar decides he and Noor will start a new life in together in South Africa, free from the religious discrimination of their community. Shankar and his friends make the long and harrowing journey to the Natal-Durban port, and by a twist of fate Noor is left behind in India. Soon the four friends are slaving away on a sugar plantation, where they experience cruelty at the hands of their British employer and the owner of the farm – a scene in which Moodley’s lack of script- writing experience struck again. The film was over two hours long, it ap- parently took two years to film, yet the production of the film was a complete disappointment. Most of the Indian characters are a sickly shade of yellow through-out the film (prob- ably due to poor white balancing tech- niques), and there are frequent typos in the English subtitles. Last month marked not only the 150th anniversary of the arrival of indentured Indian labourers in South Africa, but also the beginnings of a beautiful and colourful part of South African history. For a film with such noble intentions, it really was a disappointing reflection of the beginning of the tragic love story between the Indian indentured labourers and South Africa.
