Gamma Sigma Omega financial books are ready to be turned over to the Audit chairman today.

Program: Soror Renee Grant: written – Highlighted “Pink Goes Red” and “MLK Day of

Service”. Georgia Power has asked GSO to participate in the planning of the next day of service.

EAF: Soror Charlene Jones: Each Soror was asked to give an amount equal to or more than her

shoe size for EAF. Additional collection of funds and the drawings will take place at the March

meeting.

Membership: Soror Clemontine Washington: written - Distributed brochure to visiting and

reactivated sorors. Valentine Kisses are compliments of the Membership Committee. The

membership committee recommends that Gamma Sigma Omega consider Membership Intake. It

was moved by Soror Clemontine Washington and seconded that we accept the recommendation

from the Membership Committee to consider Membership Intake for the year 2014. The

Committee will meet and follow the guidelines in the Intake Manual to determine if the chapter

qualifies. Sorors were asked to review the guidelines in our By-laws.

Connections: Soror Monifa Johnson – written. Please see Soror Monifa Johnson for more

Graduate Advisory – Soror Audrey Singleton: Sigma Tau: Applied for the “Pearl of Power”

Regional Award. Gamma Sigma Omega is invited to dinner on Sunday, February 16, 2014 with

Soror Tina Gaye-Bernie Bernard. Armstrong Atlantic State University will pick up the tab.

Gamma Upsilon- Soror Tarangula Scott – Soror Marsha Lewis Brown will return Gamma

Upsilon to active status.

Public Relations: Soror Terri Lewis - written -Asked for assistance with writing and editing

articles. Looking for media contact to help with distribution. Please present information three

weeks in advance.

2014 South Atlantic Regional Conference: Soror Tarangula Scott - Gamma Sigma Omega’s

delegate strength is seven. 83 members paid their dues as of January 31, 2014.

Delegates: Sorors Tarangula Barnes, Renee Grant, Audrey Singleton and Tara Scott-Brown.

The following Sorors were nominated: Sorors Henrietta Gray, Hope Johnson and Tamika Minor

Wright. It was moved by Soror Vanessa Kaigler and seconded that we close on the three names.

The following Sorors were nominated to serve as alternates: Sorors Terri Lewis and Nicole

Fields. It was moved by Soror Vanessa Kaigler and seconded that we close on the two names.

Sorors who signed up to work on the South Atlantic Regional Conference committees names will

be submitted tomorrow. Soror Tarangula Scott reminded sorors of the deadline to register for the

South Atlantic Regional Conference.

Timeless History: Soror Emma Conyers. Order is ready to be sent off for the book. Awaiting

payment from Sorors.

Founders’ Day: Soror Taqwaa Saleem: Founders’ Day is February 22, 2014 at 11:30 AM.

Attire: Uninterrupted white. No pants. Golden Sorors will be spotlighted. We will wear chapter

corsages. Directions will be emailed.

Awards: Soror Audrey Singleton: We do not need to vote for Founders’ Day awards. There

were no ties. Regional Awards – Applications must be postmarked by February 14, 2014.

Please inform Soror Audrey Singleton if you are applying for an award because she needs to

mail an entrance fee.

Greenbriar Anniversary Celebration: We received a letter requesting Gamma Sigma Omega

to serve on committees for the anniversary. An Email will be sent for sorors to sign up to work

on committees.

Unfinished Business: Soror Terri Lewis – Precious Gems - Gave an update on Precious Gems

activities. Career Fair will be held today after chapter meeting. Names of Precious Gems, Team

Captains along with team members were read. Various suggestions for generating funds were

presented. i.e. write your check, sell dinners, ads and patrons, etc.

Philacter: Soror Melinda Miller: Congratulations to Soror Patricia Clark on her retirement from

the Georgia State Department of Revenue. Please see Sorors LaTonya Moore or Margaret Anne

Pearson to sign up for Relay for Life. Attendance: GSO 56 – 3 visiting sorors. $180 was

donated to Beach High School by sorors who are alumnae. Three new life memberships have

been submitted: Sorors Ivy Richardson, Vanessa Kaigler, and Renee McCollough. We have two

Silver Stars: Sorors Melinda Miller and Cheryl Davenport.

Overall Program Highlights

Soror Manitia Moultrie , South Atlantic Region Representative for the International Program Committee will submit our “MLK Day of Service” pictures and narrative to the Ivy Leaf.

The program committee will submit four scrapbooks for the Regional Program Awards. GSO Program committed presented an overview of Alpha Kappa Alpha Program to the

sorors of Gamma Upsilon on March 1, 2014

Keep Savannah Beautiful invited the Chapter to attend the “Keep Savannah Beautiful” Appreciation Banquet on March 4, 2014 at 5:30pm.

Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter Update I. Emerging Young Leaders Initiative –

1. The EYL members attended the Grand Festival Day on Saturday, February 8, 2014, at the Civic

Center.

2. The Emerging Young Leaders and Precious Gems participated a Career Fair on February 8 , 2014.

3. The EYL members will meet following our chapter meeting at the West Broad YMCA. Theme is

"Why is Community Service Important” and the guest speaker is Lady Mahogany.

II. Health Initiative- the chairpersons are LaTanya Thompson and Lorna Jackson.

1. On Friday, February 7, 2014 the Sorors hosted the “Pink Goes Red” event at the West

Broad YMCA. The following Sorors were present:

2. The chapter will participate as a vender on Friday, April 11th for the Amerigroup Health Fair.

Asthma Awareness and Diabetics information will be distributed.

3. March is “Kidney Awareness Month” and “Colorectal Cancer Month”.

4. American Diabetes Alert Day is March 24th.

5. American Cancer Society “Relay for Life” will be held in May. Please see Soror Latanya, Soror Lorna

or Soror Margaret for more details.

III. Economic Security Initiative – the chairperson is Denise Cooper.

1. Our chapter will partner with EOA Savannah and City of Savannah to present a Housing Fair.

The first meeting was held on Tuesday, February 25, 2014 at 10:00am. Soror Renee and

Soror Terri attended the meeting. The next planning meeting will be held on March 11, 2014

at 10:00am.

2. There will be a “Balance your checkbook workshop” at the March Sorority Meeting for

“America Saves Back”.

IV. Social Justice and Human Rights Initiative – the chairperson is Clemontine Washington.

The March 6th “TakeBack the Night Walk” event in observance of Women

Empowerment Month will be rescheduled.

V. Global Poverty Initiative – the chairpersons are Taqwaa Saleem and Terri Lewis.

1. National Canned Food Month – On February 8, 2014 Gamma Sigma Omega, Alpha Kappa

Alpha Sorority donated non perishable food to “Blessings in a Book Bag” as part of the Global

Poverty initiative. These items were donated during the February Meeting.

Blessings In A Book Bag Inc. is a non profit organization based out of Savannah, GA at Bartow

Elementary that assist over 50 children and their families every Friday with a bag filled with non

perishable food to sustain them over the weekend. Blessing In A Book Bag Inc. is designed to

feed elementary school children on the weekends whose families qualify for the Free & Reduced

Meal Plan and have little or no food to eat on the weekends. Better test scores, improved reading

skills, positive behavior, improved health and increased attendance have all been attributed to the

success of this program. It costs $80 to feed one American school child in our program for an

entire 38-week school year. The Global Poverty Committee wishes to thank those Sorors who

generously donated to Blessing In A Book Bag Inc.

The Old Savannah City Mission is a local 501 (c)(3) funded by people who care about the less fortunate

and demonstrate it by giving of their time, talent and treasure. The Old Savannah City Mission works

with a bare-bone Staff of seven employees. These dedicated servants work with hundreds of volunteers to

deliver services to our community most vulnerable and needy citizens in a highly cost effective way. The

Old Savannah Mission is located on 2414 Bull Street. The Global Poverty Committee wishes to thank

those Sorors who volunteered to participate at the Old Savannah City Mission. On March 3rd

, the

following Sorors participated Terri Lewis, Renee Grant, Mary C. Coleman, Virginia M. Parham, Charlene

E. Jones, Audrey B. Singleton, Joyce Dingle, Sharon Savage-Watson from Gamma Sigma Omega

Chapter and Christian Upkins, Samecia Smith, Erika Moultrie, and Lanea Dunn from Sigma Tau. They

served 68 and women meals on March 3, 2014. Gamma Sigma Omega and Sigma Tau chapters

volunteer to serve meals at the Old Savannah City Mission the first Monday of each month. The next

event will be held on Monday, April 7, 2014.

2. Proposal for Heifer International Fundraiser.

Don’t forget to have your Smart buck validated at each GSO Program event that you attend. At

the end of year, the Soror who attended the most GSO Program events will win a prize.

Proceeds will be donated to Heifer International

Event: Fundraiser for Heifer International – Mini Ipad 32GB Raffle Proposed Dates: April – June 2014 or Fall 2014 Proposal: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter, Global Poverty Committee is seeking approval for a fundraising event from April to June 2014 or Fall 2014 for the sole purpose of donating the proceeds to Heifer International. Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority selected Heifer International as one of its charities of choice during the term of International President, Carolyn House Stewart. Supporting the platform of "Global Leadership Through Timeless Service" Stewart rallied AKA's 260,000 members in the effort to raise awareness of and funds for the work of Heifer International in Kenya and Ecuador. Heifer International is a global nonprofit with a proven solution to ending hunger and poverty in a sustainable way. Heifer helps empower millions of families to lift them out of poverty and hunger to self-reliance through gifts of livestock, seeds and trees and extensive training, which provide a multiplying source of food and income. Mini Ipad. We will also ask other Sorors to assist us with the sale of the tickets. Additional

tickets will be provided upon request. The goal is to sell at least 200 tickets.

Heifer International charity will be highlighted throughout this fundraising effort.

Chatham County (based on NAACP Voter Action Network System)

The Connections Committee would like to challenge each member organization of the

local Pan-Hellenic Council to match our goal of registering 200 new voters between now

and the General Election. The voter registration deadline is October 6, 2014, for the

General Election on November 4, 2014. Voter registration activities would be

coordinated with the Savannah Branch NAACP.

1. Business attire, unless otherwise noted, is required for plenary sessions. Flip-flop type shoes

3. Only members with badges will be admitted to plenary sessions.

4. Stand for the procession of dais members.

5. Receive the Regional Director and Supreme Basileus by standing when they are introduced.

6. Refrain from walking during dais introductions, the meditation and when the Regional Director of the Supreme Basileus is giving her address to the delegation

7. Respect designated seating for delegates, Diamond/Golden Sorors, the physically challenged

and reserved seating for conference guests.

8. Turn off all electronic communication devices. Please step out of the meeting if you must use

a phone.

9. Table hostesses are beneficial during meal functions to remind us to keep quiet during presentations and/or performances at the dais.

10. Please be considerate of other conference attendees and take only ONE

gift when they are distributed at functions.

11. Refrain from overloading your plate during receptions. One of two of each food item is appropriate.

12. Must purchase ticket to attend all paid meal functions including Mary Shy Scott Leadership

II. HEALTH INITIATIVE –

Pink Goes Red: On February 7, 2013, Sigma Tau members conducted a Pink Goes Red Workout

in the Compass Point Clubhouse on AASU’s campus. They exercised with students of AASU.

They also collected donations which was given to the American Heart Association.

IV. GLOBAL POVERTY INITIATIVE –

Old Savannah City Mission: Sigma Tau and Gamma Sigma Omega members served dinner to

85 men and 6 women on February 3, 2014. The following sorors volunteered: Sigma Tau: Erika

Moultrie and Christian Upkins. Gamma Sigma Omega: Renee Grant, Terri Lewis, Audrey

Austin House’s Donation: On February 27, 2014 Sigma Tau Chapter collected and donated 49

pairs of little girls shoes to the Austin House for the girls there. Mrs. Williams and others were

very appreciative for the donation.

V. SOCIAL JUSTICE AND HUMAN RIGHTS –

WOMEN EMPOWERMENT MONTH: On February 17th, in observance of Women

Empowerment Month, Sigma Tau assisted the Multicultural Affairs Office by co-

sponsoring/promoting a Dinner Program and serving as hostesses during the evening at the

program.

Empowerment Hair Seminar: During the day, Delta Soror Malika Granville from New York, gave

a seminar on wearing different hair styles for black women. Soror Stanasia, from Sigma Tau, was a hair

model. Lacey Singleton from Upscales Beauty Salon demonstrated caring for natural hair. Soror Stanasia’s

hair was beautiful afterward.

Empowerment Program/Dinner: On Feb. 17th, Soror Tina Gaye-Bernie Bernard from New

York was the guest speaker for the evening. She had a very powerful presentation and discussion

concerning black women with makeup, appearance and place in today’s society. Sigma Tau’s

members present were Sorors Bresa, Christian, Cleo, Erika, Samecia and Stanasia. Thanks to

Sorors Albertha Collier, Emma Preer, Jessie DeLoach, Terri Lewis and Virginia Parham of

Gamma Sigma Omega Chapter for their attendance. Also present were Sorors Sharon and

Audrey.

Savannah Rape Crisis Center: Sorors collected and donated undergarments, sweatpants, t-shirts

and socks to the center on February 27, 2014. Thanks to the following sorors for participation:

Sorors Jatinique, Christian, Erika, Shonique, Bresa, Patrese and Cleo. Soror Keisha Gibson

Carter, Director of the Center, accepted the donations and was very appreciative of them.

EAF SHOE DRIVE: Members wore pink and/or green shoes to meeting on Feb. 23rd

and donated

monies according to their shoe size for EAF. Final collection will be given at the March 9th meeting..

SISTERLY ACTIVITY:

On February 16th, Sigma Tau Chapter sponsored “An Evening of Sisterhood” with members of Gamma

Sigma Omega, Sigma Tau and Soror Tina Bernard from New York City. Soror Christian and I escorted

Soror Tina to Pearls’ Salt Water Grille Restaurant and had a wonderful fellowship. Soror Tina presented

each soror with a gift. Thanks to Sorors Christian Upkins, Alberta Collier and granddaughter, Jessie

DeLoach, Taqwaa Saleem and Terri Lewis for their attendance.

TRI-CHAPTERS FOUNDERS’ DAY:

Seven (7) members of Sigma Tau Chapter travelled to Midway, GA for the Founders’ Day Luncheon.

Sorors Christian Upkins and Jatinique Lucas performed an inspirational dance. Members attending were:

Sorors Amanda, Christian, Cleo, Erika, Jatinique, Patrese and Samecia.

• Congratulations to Soror Christian Upkins, Basileus of Sigma Tau Chapter. Soror Christian is

the recipient of the Dewey Lee Scholarship from the Chatham Retired Educators Association. She

will share her vision of Education at the March 10th meeting.

Please Welcome Our Sorors of Gamma Upsilon Back!

On February 14, 2014, we received a letter from Soror Marsha Lewis Brown to reinstate Gamma

Upsilon Chapter at Savannah State University with conditions.

On February 14, 2014, the Graduate Council met via conference call to discuss the letter from

Soror Marsha Lewis Brown and the meeting to be held with the members of Gamma Upsilon.

On February 16, 2014, The Graduate Council along with representatives of Savannah State

University met with the members of Gamma Upsilon Chapter to inform them of the Chapter’s

status and their sanctions from Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Savannah State University.

On February 16, 2014, Members of the Graduate Council conducted a Soror Code of Conduct

Workshop with Members of Gamma Upsilon.

On February 18, 2014, I mailed off Chapter Tax, Per Capita and EAF dues along with the Roster

of Officers to the Corporate Office. We are waiting for the Corporate Office to upload Gamma

Upsilon in the system so that they can be registered for Regional Conference.

On February 23, 2014, planning for the all day workshop to be held on March 1, 2014 for the

members of Gamma Upsilon.

On February 26, 2014, The Executive Committee of Gamma Upsilon held a telephone

conference to plan for their regular Chapter Meeting to be held on March 2, 2014.

I wish to thank the Graduate Council for their support thus far and the members of Gamma

Sigma Omega who will be supporting Gamma Upsilon in the near future. Special thanks to Soror

Audrey Barnes Singleton who has given an unmeasurable amount of time and support thus far.

Good Afternoon Madame Basileus The Savannah Pan-Hellenic Council met on Monday February 10th, 2014, we are in the process of completing our calendar of activities/events for the year. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Mu Phi Graduate Chapter will be having their annual Omega Mardi Gras on Friday March 28th, 2014 at the Savannah Civic Center from 8pm-2:30am. Tickets are $25 in Advance, $35 at the door and $250 for a Table in advance. I have 10 tickets at this time if any sorors are interested. The Greek Picnic will be held on June 21st, 2014 at Lake Myer. The cost for each person will be $3.00, 12noon until 6pm; more information forthcoming. Homecoming is Saturday October 4th, 2014. The Pan-Hellenic Council will be having their Annual Greek Homecoming Celebration during Homecoming, date to be announced at the next meeting.
