Grecian dresses are taking over the catwalks now; classic, beautiful and elegant, Grecian inspired dresses are everywhere, from classic cuts to long ball gowns and elegant evening dresses. Grecian dresses take their inspiration from the togas of the ancient Romans and Greeks, and are characterized by beautiful draping, empire line or natural waist-lines and occasional braiding.

Our favourite sylish women are not afraid to break with tradition, and many of the standout looks of the past seasons struck a dazzling note. Ndidi Obioha stunned in a strapless number of her own stock, keeping things simple, elegant and streamlined. Munachi also favourd minimalism with her thigh high slit

Like plaid, ankara, chunky jewellery and super-size bags which seem to have stamped their feet on trend, lace has also made a come back and getting big attention. It seems to be a common feature on many runways.

Lace carries all kinds of connotations. It can even connote innocence in some cases but

is a look that is demure and sexy with a

still high street at the same time.Black is the dominant colour for lace

and gives the most dramatic effect but it should not be an excuse not to be

adventurous with other colours. Lace manages to retain elegance and

sophistication despite being sexily see- through.

The world woke up a few years ago to experience the surge of structural shoes thrown at buyers by shoe designers from around the world. The designers seemed to be telling fashionistas the days were over when shoes were just regular. Accessories were pushed to the front burner and every one who adorned these unusual shoes, succeeded in drawing attention away from their clothes to these beautiful works of art. Shoes siezed attention from clothes and the world saw creativity at its best. Just when you think you have seen something very unusual, someone shows up wearing a pair you can hardly de-scribe. Height and shape became everything. It was a case of putting your best foot forward.

Today, the trend for unusual heels continues. Whatever label you choose to subscribe to, just make sure what you are buying is as high as a skyscraper; in which case you have to prepare to walk tall. To-

Professor Folasade Tolulope Ogunsola is the Provost, College of Medicine, University of Lagos. Until her election in 2013, no woman has accomplished that feat in the 50 year history of that institution. Her victory was not just for the female doctors in Lagos alone, but for the female doctors across the country that have never had the

privilege of manning the position of Provost across colleges of medicine in the nation’s Universities. Born to Professor Akin Mabogunje and Justice Titilola Mabogunje, a retired high court judge in Ogun State, the

young Folasade, the first of five children, began her educational career at the Queen’s College, Lagos where she fell in love with music and distinguished herself as a fine Mezzo Soprano. Her medical journey began at the then, University of Ife where she studied medicine and graduated in 1982. She obtained her Master’s degree in medical micro biology in 1990 from the University of Lagos. That same year, she started her residency and later in 1995, she started work as a lecturer at the same University.

In 1998, she obtained her PhD. from the University of Wales, Cardiff. She was made a professor in 2008.The elegant doctor, whose looks belies her age, is married to Mr. Segun Ogunsola, a chartered accountant and they are blessed with three children, and grandchildren.

Generally, a girl-child is a female child below the age of eighteen. Indeed, several charters have addressed the importance of the well-being of children especially the girl child.

In the Nigerian social structure, the position of the girl-child is a source of concern, largely characterized by the practice of institutionalized patriarchy and polygamy. The girl-child often times faces some sort of discrimination in areas such as education, health, nutrition, household

The commendation of Globacom resonated throughout the 10th Africa Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State recently. The Deputy Governor stated in his special remarks at the AMAA, sponsored by Globacom and held at the Gabriel Okara Cultural Centre, Yenagoa, that corporate organisations on the African continent should emulate Globacom by investing and promoting key sectors of the economy in countries where they operate. He added that this was a needed impetus to grow the movie industry. The Deputy Governor particularly praised Globacom for engaging African actors and actresses as brand ambassadors.

Welcoming guests earlier, the CEO of AMAA, announced that she would be assuming the new role of Founder and Executive Chairman to enable her concentrate on creative endeavours. She applauded Globacom and other sponsors for making the 10th edition of AMAA a glamorous event.

SALLY BAWA, LAGOS DESIGNER, AT THE MERCEDES BENZ FASHION WEEK, MALTA

edition of the African Movie Academy Awards (AMAA) held in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State recently thanked the practitioners for the robust development of the movie industry on the African continent .

His words “It is remarkable that our movie industry has rapidly grown in stature and is today ranked amongst the top three in the world. To be placed in the league of the highly successful Hollywood in the United States of America and India’s Bollywood is indeed not a mean feat. This development has earned Nigeria the status of the Movie Capital of the African continent, and perhaps explains why this event is being held in the country”.

He expressed satisfaction that national carrier Globacom had paid a pivotal role in the development of the movie industry through its pioneering role in brand ambassadorship adding that this had encouraged excellence, professionalism, versatility and resourcefulness in the industry.

Dr. Adenuga, however, enjoined movie practitioners not to rest on their oars by continuing to project the continent in positive light and focusing more on developmental issues and de-emphasising scenarios that could inadvertently project the continent as the epicenter of violence and crime.

“It is imperative for Africa to tap into the awesome power of the movie industry to shape opinions, lives, character and values. The industry is a veritable medium of mentoring

and moulding opinions. We must seize the moment”, Dr. Adenuga advised.

He described the movie industry as one of the key growth drivers in African economy adding “ the movie industry, like sports, can and should also be fully exploited to fight the scourge of unemployment on the African continent. I enjoin all stakeholders in government at all levels and the private sector to tap the myriads of opportunities offered by the industry to de-populate the army of the unemployed who are ready recruits for venality, armed robbery and even terrorism”.

The Globacom Chairman congratulated nominees for the milestone AMAA Awards including the duo of Desmond Elliot and Chioma Chukwuka-Akpotha, who are Globacom Ambassadors, for being outstanding in their chosen professions and urged other practitioners to re-double their quest for excellence in order to win recognition, fame and acclaim.
