Raider Happenings Remembering Raiders

2014-15 Founders’ ScholarsLast June, Akaela Feng ’19, Heba Imam ’18, Everett Ward ’18, Tanner Smith ’16, Jane Ward ’16, and Sarah Shaff ’15 were named Founders’ Scholars for 2014-15. Four additional recipients for the 2014-15 academic year—students who are new to North Cross School—were announced in October. The common bond among each Founders’ Scholarship recipient is their passion and determination to achieve academic success and become future leaders in their communities.

Timothy McLaughlin ’20 came to North Cross School from James Madison Middle School. He has been an Honor Roll student since second grade and earned several art awards during his time at Wasena Elementary School and at James Madison. Timothy enjoys soccer and played for the Raiders this fall. Last summer he played on a local soccer club in Morelia, Mexico. Timothy also volunteers at HoneyTree Early Learning Center, helps with neighborhood cleanup in the Old Southwest neighborhood each spring and fall, and earned a citizenship award at Wasena Elementary School.

Nolan Wages ’16 joined North Cross School this fall after attending Floyd County Schools through ninth grade and Blue Mountain High School his sophomore year. As a middle school student, Nolan earned the Student Council Leadership Award. While a student at Floyd County High School, Nolan was a member of the cross country and soccer teams and maintained a place on First Honor Roll. Nolan is an accomplished musician and has participated in numerous marching, concert, and honor bands. He is active in Boy Scouts, having achieved the rank of Life Scout, and is currently working on the requirements to earn the Eagle Scout rank.

Merit Scholarships for Alumni

The North Cross School Alumni Association has approved the establishment of an Alumni Merit Scholarship. The criteria is the same as our Founders’ Scholarship, recognizing outstanding academic accomplishment of a rising ninth grade student, but is awarded to a child or grandchild of an alumnus of North Cross School. We are in the process of raising funds for this award. If you’d like more information or want to make a gift to this Scholarship, contact Chris Moore ’71 at [email protected].

Makayla Bibby ’20 is now in seventh grade at North Cross School after attending Stonewall Jackson Middle School. Last year she was Vice President of the Student Council, earned second place in the city-wide Science Fair, and was on First Honor Roll. Makayla plays viola and was on the tennis and basketball teams at Stonewall Jackson.

Jared LaTreill ’19 came to North Cross School after attending Cave Spring Middle School last year. Jared is an Honor Roll student who has studied trumpet, clarinet, piano, and saxophone. He is also an apprentice learning how to work with stained glass. Jared was a member of the basketball team at Cave Spring last year and is currently captain of his AAU basketball team.

Dottie Stevens was a dear friend of North Cross School and worked at the school for over 30 years. She started as a receptionist at the Salem location and taught kindergarten once North Cross moved to Roanoke. During her time here, she collected milk money, mixed gallons of paint for the art classes, put Band-Aids on knees, and was a friend to everyone who came through the door. In the photo at right, from the 1967 yearbook, she helps Clare Little with her art project. Her daughter, Anne Lee Stevens, is a Salem alum and her grandson, Peter Ostaseski, Jr., was in the class of 1999. Dorothy “Dottie” Stevens passed away on Tuesday, October 14, 2014.

Barbara Lemon, wife of former Board of Trustees member Bill Lemon, passed away on October 7, 2014 at the age of 78. She is survived by her children Sara Ludwig ’78, Tucker Lemon ’79, and Stephen Lemon ’80. Barbara was the grandmother of Catherine Ludwig ’06, Allison Lemon ’07, Caroline Ludwig ’08, Laura Lemon ’12, Tyler Lemon ’12, Ashley Lemon, and Nathalie Lemon ’20.

Barbara was a tutor at North Cross School in the 1970s and an early advocate and resource for children with learning differences. She helped establish the Shedd School in Roanoke to help children with learning difficulties. Barbara was also a supporter of the CrossWalk Program and was on campus (in photo at right) for the dedication of the renovated space earlier this year.

exactly what was needed. It was a blessing to learn about a program that could teach my child to learn in a way that made sense.”

Kit learned about the Orton-Gillingham approach and saw that the principles had a positive impact on her family. “I realized it would be a shame not to share what I learned with others. I don’t want other parents to struggle to find help for their children, I want to be a trusted resource for our community.” Kit shared her story with North Cross headmaster, Dr. Christian Proctor, and they recognized that her abilities and the school’s goals intersected. Their dialogue led to the establishment of the CrossWalk Program, with Kit at the helm as Director.

“We’re focused on the challenges students face but we encourage them through instruction that gives them tools to succeed. We work toward increased student responsibility as we practice and reinforce the skills they need to achieve and succeed,” Kit

says. “We want to make sure students return fully integrated into their regular classes with their peers–equipped with the skills they need to learn here and beyond.” Kit reiterates, “It’s never too late, or too early, to get help for your child. I have a number of resources parents may find helpful to address learning issues with their children and I have information about our program. It’s comforting to be assured there is help for your child.”

We are excited to announce that over $101,000 was raised this fall in the CrossWalk

challenge including the matching gift. These funds will be used to provide scholarships and help with operating expenses. It is important that we maintain this program at a high level until we can grow the enrollment to a self-sufficient level.

After a summer of expansion and renovation to the back of Hancock Library, the CrossWalk Program held an open house and dedication in September to introduce the program to the school and the Roanoke community.

At the Open House in September, guests had the opportunity to participate in a dyslexia simulation and were able to better understand the challenges faced by dyslexic students in the classroom. Dr. Proctor recognized the contributions of the many volunteers and board members who shared a vision to create a program unique to the Roanoke Valley that would meet the needs of students with language based learning differences. He also recognized donors Richard Bell and Toni Clark who were instrumental in funding the classroom renovations.

The CrossWalk faculty and students started the school year in their new space which includes six new classrooms, all equipped with iPads, laptops, and interactive whiteboards for multisensory learning. The renovation

was made possible by a generous donation from a long-time family friend of CrossWalk Program Director Kit Prillaman who wanted to support the program. Kit said, “All CrossWalk faculty are trained to teach using the Orton-Gillingham method. This research-based instruction utilizes hands-on learning and multi-sensory teaching individualized to each student. Orton-Gillingham is recognized as the ‘gold standard’ for teaching students diagnosed with language-based learning issues including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and/or dyscalculia.”

CrossWalk students spend part of their day in a traditional classroom interacting with their peers and the other part in the CrossWalk classroom. Kit and her teaching staff develop a tailored instruction plan for

each student and a target date for transitioning from CrossWalk to full-time instruction in a traditional classroom.

“We’re focused on the challenges students face but we encourage them through instruction that gives them tools to succeed. We work toward increased student responsibility as we practice and reinforce the skills they need to achieve and succeed,” Kit says. “We want to make sure students return fully integrated into their regular classes with their peers–equipped with the skills they need to learn here and beyond.”

Kit became motivated to start the CrossWalk Program when she couldn’t find the daily instruction her child needed to be able to learn how to read. “I knew I had to figure it out for myself. I had to get trained so that I knew

Honor is a word often heard at North Cross School; including in the athletic arena. Despite more wins than losses for North Cross School athletic teams last year, no victory on the athletic field or court is more important than winning the hearts and souls of our student-athletes. Long after our students are done wearing the “NC” on their chest the most important quality we desire is honor. Coaching at North Cross School requires that our expectations reflect the importance of honoring the game, their teammates, opponents, officials, coaches, parents, themselves, and the School. The 2013-14 athletic year was filled many challenges and the challenges are the building blocks for honorable people. With this as our focus, North Cross fielded 30 teams with 430 team members participating during the fall, winter, and spring seasons. The middle school teams are the foundation for our programs, focusing on building teamwork and developing the fundamentals of the game. Following are the results of our Varsity programs during fall, winter, and spring of the 2013-14 school year

The fall of 2013 was marked by several dramatic finishes for our Varsity Football, Boys’ Varsity Soccer, and Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey, all of which qualified for the VISAA state tournament. The football team qualified as the #2 seed and advanced to the state final game and fell to a very tough #1 seed Virginia Episcopal School, 28-14. Fifteen players received all-conference and all-state honors. Coach Alexander’s overall record at North Cross School is 37-19 over his five season career. James Brown and the Boys’ Varsity Soccer team compiled a record of 17-2-3 as they battled to secure the conference runner-up while moving on as a state semi-finalist. Five players earned all-conference honors,

while four earned all-state. Katherine Kelly ’98 (BRC Coach of the Year) led our Girls’ Varsity Field Hockey team to yet another great finish as runner-up in the conference, advancing to the state semi-final game for the first time in school history. They fell after a tough 2-0 game to Fredericksburg academy, who went on to win the state title. The Cross Country team expanded its ranks with a growing middle school group and has a very bright future. The Girls’ Varsity Volleyball team led by Heather Donaho had a challenging 9-13 season, but displayed remarkable teamwork and competed at a high level in all of their matches. Over 75 middle school students competed on our fall roster.

During the winter our swimming program continued to groom top swimmers as three swimmers qualified for the VISAA state meet. On the hardcourt, the Raiders fielded seven teams with three middle school, two junior varsity and two varsity squads. The Varsity Lady Raiders won eight games and qualified as the 12 seed for the state tournament for the second time in school history. The Varsity Boys’ Basketball team closed out the season with a 18-10 record and finished an undefeated 12-0 in the VIC winning the conference championship. Ranked second in the state tournament, the team suffered a heartbreaking last minute loss in the quarterfinal game at home. Again, our middle schoolers were a big part of our programs, with 65 students participating on our winter athletic teams.

Once again spring sports sent four teams (Boys’ Tennis, Boys’ Lacrosse, Girls’ Soccer, and Baseball) to the state playoffs. The Boys’ Varsity Tennis team achieved a remarkable level this year on the shoulders of some young talent. The team was ranked #2 in the state and lost to Highland School (#1) in a great

match 5-4. Coach Robert Robillard earned VIC Coach of the Year and Joseph Cartledge ’16 earned VIC Player of the Year honors. Girls’ Varsity Soccer had a phenomenal year with a record of 14-2-1 and achieved the #1 state ranking for the first time in the school’s history. The Lady Raiders defeated Eastern Mennonite during the regular season for the first time in ten years, but fell to them in both the conference final and the state semi-final game. Coach James Brown was named BRC Coach of the Year. The Varsity Baseball team managed a 11-9 record with a bid to the state tournament as the #6 seed. The Raiders traveled to Isle of Wight Academy and upset the #3 seed (7-2), before falling to Fuqua School in the state semi-final game (5-4). Boys Varsity Lacrosse racked up an 11-5 record and earned spots in both the conference and state semi-final games before being knocked out of play. Coach Stephen Belderes earned Coach of the Year honors. The Girls Varsity Tennis team was also a bright spot for the Raiders as they compiled a 10-1 record and a BRC championship. The rapidly growing girls lacrosse program had a fine year at the U15 level and also grabbed the first ever Junior Varsity win in the school’s history. They went on to win four JV games this past season, including a win over a seasoned Patrick Henry club. Although the Varsity Golf team had a re-building year the main spotlight shone on Ty Olinger. Ty was the VIC tournament champion and also the state runner-up.

Fall 2014 Fall 2014AllP ints AllP ints

In the early part of my career, I taught at a middle school where everyone who taught classes that were not core subjects were referred to as “Colorful Extras.” I remember being annoyed at faculty meetings when the Principal would remind the “Colorful Extras” to change their bulletin board every month, because, after all, “we were colorful and creative.” I was defensive and felt like we were being told that we were “not as important—but please help make the school look good.” Years later I’ve come to realize that this was a compliment, because for those who do not have creative colorful images in their everyday life, the Fine Arts must bring a huge element of joy to students, parents, faculty and administration alike. As I look at the beautiful colors of fall it reminds me of not only the beauty of the earth but the beauty within the Fine Arts Department. The collective timbre of band instruments and voices and the assorted colors of paint and design bring a smile to my face. How fortunate I feel to be a part of the beauty that I am surrounded with by both the students and faculty in my building everyday.

We were exited to welcome two new talented “colorful extras” to our department. This year we welcomed Lee Kephart to our team as a full-time art teacher for the Lower School and Middle School. Lee has twice been a long-term substitute art teacher and we are happy to have her here full-time. Becky Sharkey has joined our team and teaches our graphic design and Yearbook classes.

It is always busy during the first term with several students auditioning for the All District Band and Choir as well as art students submitting their work for different area competitions, and drama students rehearsing for upcoming performances. Many talented students performed or displayed art work at the very successful FOTA Coffeehouse Event at the South County library in November. Hats off to FOTA President, Peggy McDonnell, and all the parents that make this event a truly memorable family friendly evening—not to mention the wonderful financial support the event provides our department each year!

Please mark your calendars for the following upcoming Fine Arts events:• December 19: Lower School Holiday Performance at 10:30 a.m. in the Carter Athletic Center—

under the direction of Mr. Richard Rudolph and featuring guest artist/composer Bradley Sowash.• January 23 and 24: Winter Theatrical Production, “The Importance of Being Earnest” by Oscar

Wilde, at 7:30 p.m. in Fishburn Auditorium—under the direction of Polly Jones

Not only is it my joy to be with our students, it is also a joy to sit down with my department members: Andrew Miller, Lee Kephart, Annette Pfaeffle, Becky Sharkey, Polly Jones, and Richard Rudolph, who help to lead a talented group of students in many areas of artistic expression.

Fall 2014 Fall 2014AllP ints AllP ints

Eaton Hall began the 2014-15 school year with an expanded student population that currently stands at 111 students. After the three previous years of ongoing building renovations during the Inspiring Minds Campaign, it was wonderful to able to begin this year with our building well organized and in great shape.

This is the second year of our 1:1 iPad program, and the advantages of this new technology are multifold. The Eaton Hall faculty has demonstrated great creativity in their use of both the Promethean Boards and iPads during the past year, and we continue to expand the number of e-texts, online materials, and “apps” used in daily instruction. Students have become adept at creating visually impressive presentations, and the ability to access and share new information during daily instruction greatly enhances the learning process.

We are enormously grateful to the efforts of the Parents’ Association, and in particular, to the tireless efforts of Susan Card and Susan Wenk in making this a special year for both students and faculty. During the past year, the Parents’ Association made available funds that allowed us to take the eighth-grade students to view a production of To Kill a Mockingbird at the Mill Mountain Theater; take the entire Middle School to view The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, based on the novel that our students read in Mrs. Farley’s sixth-grade class; and continue to invite additional guest speakers to our school. The Parents’ Association also organized the most ambitious fall Pep Rally our school has seen during my tenure, and it concluded with a well-rehearsed and enjoyable Middle School “flash-mob” dance.

Two additional programs were introduced this fall in Eaton Hall. Jared Hanson, sixth- and seventh-grade math teacher, began a MathCounts Team, which has been meeting during lunch and after school to prepare for an upcoming competition in February. Sandy Patterson has fulfilled a longstanding goal of establishing an experimental chestnut grove on campus to be used as an outdoor laboratory for the whole school. Under Ms. Patterson’s guidance, a grove of twenty-one American and hybrid chestnut trees was planted with the help of students, faculty, parents, and Chestnut Association Representative, Carl Absher, on Saturday, December 6, in a designated area above the Thompson residence. In future years, this grove, the second largest in the area, will serve as a great resource for scientific study.

Many of our Eaton Hall students have also benefitted from the new Learning Center that was recently created in Hancock Library. The Center offers an expanded program for our Crosswalk students and offers valuable academic support for students needing tutorial services in specific academic disciplines.

We are excited about an upcoming visit by the Yale Alley Cats in January and a return visit by percussionist and award-winning instrumentalist Tom Teasley. These special events add excitement to the winter months even while the school remains focused on its daily mission of academic excellence and the development of integrity and character.

Ed Dickenson Director of the Middle School

This fall we welcomed a few new faces to the Ellis Hall corridors.

And me!Prior to the opening of school the halls, many of the

classrooms, and most of the building’s interior trim work received a fresh coat of paint. Smart boards were installed in our grade one through five classrooms, making this technology available to all students in the building. iPads are also available to the teachers, and for small group instruction and personal computer access is available in the Extended Day homework room. All this “newness” serves as a fitting backdrop for the unparalleled academic offerings currently available in our lower school. Introduced just this year is Singapore Math®, a conceptual-based program which offers a developmentally appropriate approach to math built on mastery, not rote memorization. Our lower school math teachers received hours of professional development training in Singapore Math this summer. The program has been well received by students and teachers alike. Students are more confident in their abilities and the transition has been positive. In addition to this premiere math program, we are in the third year of intensive Spanish instruction. All children, at each level of the lower school, receive Spanish instruction every school day and the impact of this immersion will only increase as our students’ progress through school. Now in its second year in Ellis Hall, the reading and literacy program, Word Study, is having the desired positive impact on our students’ foundational skills in reading and writing.

Please plan a visit to campus and be sure to allow time for a walk through Ellis Hall. I would love to share the dynamic teaching and learning taking place within the lower school.

Fall 2014 Fall 2014AllP ints AllP ints

In 2013-2014, North Cross continued to provide students the opportunity to study the languages and cultures represented by Spanish, French, and Latin. Our Lower School Spanish instructors, Sra. Jennifer Bousch and Sra. Marianna Hermosilla de Casco, work tirelessly to give students a good grounding in listening and speaking skills. To encourage students and promote Spanish in the Lower School, fifth grade students performed at the Roanoke Latino Festival. This summer, Sra. Hermosilla plans to take four students to Argentina. The trip will provide them with first-hand experience of the diversity of Hispanic culture in the Western Hemisphere. Mrs. Greer, Mr. Sirko, and Sra. Fernández Plaski continue to provide Middle and Upper School students with rigorous instruction in Spanish as students hone the essential skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing.

We are pleased that 82% of the students who took the AP Spanish Language and Culture Exam and 100% of the students who took the AP Spanish Literature Exam in May earned a score of 3 or higher. In addition, students who excel in Spanish will continue to be recognized in the Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica, instituted by Sra. Plaski last year. Three Spanish students earned state recognition in the AATSP-VA (American Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese Virginia chapter) Poster Contest and a senior won a $1,000 scholarship for her achievement on the National Spanish Exam.

Our French students are immersing themselves in French and Francophone culture and language through the able and engaging instruction of Mr. Dickenson and Mrs. Greenwell. Mrs. Greenwell’s Upper School students are now eligible to join the Société Honoraire de Français. Our first initiation ceremony was held last spring with eleven charter members. Those students initiated another group of seven outstanding French students at a morning assembly in December.

Latin students are challenging themselves to improve their ability to grapple with the complex prose and poetry of the ancient Romans. In oral reports they have taught their classmates about such topics as gladiators, Roman buildings, Greek heroes, and the delights of modern Rome and Tuscany. Last year, a small but determined class took AP Latin. I am pleased to say that these Latin students achieved a qualifying score of 3 on the AP Latin exam.

Each day the faculty of the World Languages Department aims to instruct, engage, and inspire our students to prepare them for a world that will need the perspectives, tolerance, and understanding that they will have gained through the study of a world language.

Dr. Wanda Finney World Languages Department Chair

Willis Hall had an excellent 2013-2014 school year. We continue to focus on the academic opportunities for our students including participation in the Harvard Model United Nations program for the second year in a row, expanding the depth and programs offered within the Horace G. Fralin Program for Global Studies (see page 14), and providing opportunities for our students to stretch themselves by joining the resurrected Spanish Honors Society at North Cross School (15 students) and our inaugural entrance into the French Honor Society (seven students). The Class of 2014 had a banner year for college acceptances, and our success on Advanced Placement exams was outstanding. Twenty-nine students in the Classes of 2014 and 2015 earned recognition from the College Board for their success on AP Exams. This included: nineteen students earning the distinction of AP Scholar, three students earning the distinction of AP Scholar with Honor, and seven students earning the recognition of AP Scholar with Distinction. In addition, two of those students earned National AP Scholar status. Other highlights during the year included: two ninth graders winning first and second place in a Virginia Tech sponsored MLK Jr. essay contest, our continued sponsorship of the Combined Honor Band Day, a presentation from VT’s Hume Center for National Security and Technology, an Earth Day celebration that featured East Carolina University professor Dr. Eric Koephler’s visit and presentation on climate change and bio-diversity loss, and the creation of a student-led North Cross Ski Club. The breadth and depth of the offerings and opportunities continue to grow in the upper school with a talented and dedicated faculty.

During the summer, the Global Studies program sent nine students to New Zealand and Australia with Science Chair and Environmental Studies teacher, Dr. Don Webb and science teacher Sandy Patterson. The students experienced some of New Zealand’s cultural heritage, learning a Maori war chant. They met students. They witnessed the beauty of the land. In Australia, they continued to explore the unique environments that makes the Land Down Under so special. One highlight was snorkeling in the Great Barrier Reef. The students explored animal life at night and surfed by day.

More than 100 Chinese students arrived on campus in July for two-week summer camps in which they worked with North Cross students to make videos and explore the region. They visited college campuses, watched the Salem Red Sox play, and enjoyed local food. All the Chinese students stayed with local families for a cultural and language immersion. Some of the students hope to return as exchange students. One, a boy who calls himself Ocean, will arrive in January to add to a set of international students who make up at least 10% of the upper school student body this year.

The Global Studies faculty agreed to study, teach, and discuss war as a theme this year. Over the summer, all students read the book by Rye Barcott, It Happened on the Way to War, which illuminates how he developed an NGO that helps Kenyans after visiting as a soldier. Global Studies students all read a second book that related to the war theme, and they discussed their ideas in seminars on Thursday mornings before school. Some books related directly to next summer’s trip to Europe to visit important WWII sites including the D-Day beaches at Normandy. Eight students will explore the path of the Allied advance through Paris, Bastogne, Berlin, Munich, and Salzburg. They will visit Dachau to understand the Holocaust better, and they will visit Hitler’s Eagles Nest as well.

Another book, For Whom the Bell Tolls allowed students to explore the meaning of the Spanish Civil War in advance of their week in Barcelona next June. That group of ten will be studying examples of cutting-edge pedagogy as they make their way to a “Summit” on education in Davos, Switzerland. Students will work in teams to come up with innovative ideas that might transform 21st-education practices worldwide. Winners will earn scholarships to universities.

Global Studies speakers continued to bring fresh perspectives on the world to Fishburn’s stage. Continuing with the theme of war, veterans shared some of their experiences on Veteran’s Day. Lt. Carsten Belanich shared his first-hand war experiences as a Naval intelligence officer.

Music added more international flavor to the lives of our students. Students from Poland performed a concert. Professor John Walker’s Cayambis Sinfonietta exposed North Cross to the sounds of Latin American classical music. Tom Teasely, a cultural ambassador for the state department who has shared drums with musicians all over the world in the name of peace, will return in January for a two-day visit.

Later in January, 22 students will depart for the Harvard Model United Nations convention in Boston. We will represent Guatemala and Haiti in our third year competing.

Finally, Mariana Hermosilla will lead a group of students to Argentina for a language immersion and homestay. Students will connect with a school in Corrientes that we hope will become a true exchange.

More than 100 Chinese students arrived in July for two-week summer camps. Students also visited area colleges and attended baseball games.

Teachers Sandy Patterson and Dr. Don Webb traveled with a group of students to Australia and New Zealand. They met with students and experienced the cultural heritage of both countries.

Ahmed Salah spoke to students about how he helped lead the recent revolution in Egypt.

Lt. Carsten Belanich spoke to upper school students about integrated air defense systems.

Students from the Frederick Chopin School of Music in Opole, Poland performed for students.

North Cross Annual Fund | 2013–14 Annual Report North Cross Annual Fund | 2013–14 Annual Report

Seventy years ago, North Cross School was started with a student body of 19 First Graders in the basement of a Salem home by Mrs. Howard (May) Butts and Mrs. Margaret Northcross Ellis. Our founders would be proud of what their school has become. While our student body, faculty, educational offerings, and facilities have evolved over time, the mission of the school remains the same: to promote, in its students, scholarship and a love of learning, character and a sense of personal integrity and responsibility, and a commitment to the good of the community and all within it.

In his AllPoints letter, Dr. Proctor discusses many of the recent successes of our student body, faculty, and staff that highlight how we excel in fulfilling our mission. I am extremely proud of these accomplishments, and want to thank the faculty and staff for all they do to make North Cross exceptional. The Board of Trustees remains focused on working with the administration to create and deliver, in a fiscally responsible manner, a curriculum that is rigorous, innovative, and distinctive to ensure our students receive the best leadership and educational opportunity in Southwestern Virginia.

I also want to thank all North Cross donors—parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends —for their financial support of the school. We have a very generous community. Annual fund giving for the 2013-14 school year was $353,795, a 12% increase over the previous year. Total financial giving, including capital campaign giving, event revenues, restricted gifts, and grants, was $913,124. These gifts and donations are critically important to North Cross, will fuel the positive trajectory for all our programs, help attract new students to our school, assure the continuing success of our school and the finest education available in the Roanoke Valley, and enable North Cross School to continue to fulfill its founders’ vision.

Revenues Through June 30, 2014

Expenses Through June 30, 2014

Letter from the Board of TrusteesIn the process of looking for pictures in old yearbooks, I found a copy of Crossties from 1996. The front-page article talked about the success that students had on their AP tests and how six students from the graduating class had been awarded AP Scholar status. Fast forward to 2011 when we had 12 AP Scholars. Then check your Crossties from October 2014 and you will see that this year we honored 28 students for achieving AP Scholar status. In addition, we had two students honored as National AP Scholars, achieved by taking eight or more AP exams and scoring a 4 or higher on every exam taken.

At the same time, we sent 20 students to Harvard University for their Model United Nations competition. We had enough students attending so that we were able to represent two countries. Thirteen students attended the Columbia Scholastic Press conference at Columbia University and our school newspaper received Gold Medal distinction. A new student run club tutors international refugee students at local middle schools; and more than a third of our upper school students have travelled abroad as part of our international travel offerings.

The class of 2014 achieved remarkable college admissions success with 12 of our 39 graduates (31%) being accepted at colleges that are rated highly competitive and all 39 attending quality programs. When you consider the students who have earned prestigious honors, acceptances into highly selective schools like Virginia Tech’s engineering school, and the ten who elected to attend the University of Virginia (a North Cross record), we are truly living up to the vision of our founders.

Rather than looking at these successes in isolation, I prefer to look for the common thread—academic rigor. The changes we have made in our academic programs over the past three years have been significant. You have heard me speak about Word Study, Singapore Math, Lower School Spanish, technology, and Global Studies, but the biggest change has been a cultural change that places a greater value on rigor. I see this through the increase in number of students taking AP level classes. This past year we administered more than 200 AP exams with 70% scoring a 3 or above. We continue to allow students to challenge themselves by taking coursework at the highest level and students continue to achieve success. In a recent article in the Washington Post examining the relative level of rigor in schools nationally, North Cross would have ranked in the top quartile nationally and in the top five percent of schools in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Our increased college admissions success is in large part due to the increased rigor of student course load as our college board scores have remained relatively consistent.

Rigor is not just evident in the Upper School. Recent comparisons of college board scores have shown that students enrolled at North Cross in the Lower School score an average of 200 points higher on their SAT’s than graduating North Cross students who arrived after Lower School. Of significant interest is that those students that attended our Lower School average 80 points higher in writing. It is evident to me that when rigor begins at the lower school level, the cumulative results over an extended period of time are significant and have a real effect on college admissions. Lower school classes with small numbers and high expectations do have a lasting positive effect on student achievement. The introduction of Singapore Math and the increased use of technology in the lower school classrooms have only increased the achievement of our students.

Our Annual Report is as much about what we have accomplished in the classroom as it is about our financial picture. That being said, I would be remiss if I did not thank our many donors and supporters. Our very successful Annual Fund, Winter Gala, and Big Flea Sale helped make last year financially successful and allowed us to, once again, operate on a balanced budget. I am deeply appreciative of all you do to support North Cross School.

I can’t go anywhere it seems without someone making a comment about money: “How Much money have you raised?” or, “Have we reached our goals yet?” or, “Hold on to your wallets, here comes the Development guy.” Yes, it is true that the Development Department’s fundraising efforts raise funds critical to the operations of the school and its balanced budget, but there is so much more we do each day to support the school.

We are responsible for advancing the institution through a variety of media—our website, Crossties, press releases, news coverage, and advertisements. We show and tell our internal and external communities the great things that happen here. With this information, our current families appreciate the education their children experience; and prospective families are prompted to investigate why North Cross might be the best place to educate their children.

We are the Alumni Affairs office. We have an active Alumni Association, and we support them in their mission to develop alumni participation and interest in the school by providing support, promoting the school, and conveying the school’s tradition of excellence to the community at large. We like to get together with our alumni locally and in other communities.

We try to be the watchdog for all fundraising activities that happen on the North Cross campus. We know there are a lot of worthy causes, but we try to screen and reduce the number of campaigns so you are not constantly bombarded with “asks.”

We support our amazing volunteer agencies, Parents’ Association, Friends of the Arts, and Boosters whenever and however they need us. Everything they do supports our school, so we do what we can to help each to be successful.

Yes, we also raise money to support the education of every student here. The goal is to match the interests and passions of our donors with the needs of the school. Total gifts to the school were $913,124; as I’ve said many times, we have a very generous community!

We had a highly successful Annual Fund campaign capped off by our April Challenge, which raised a total of $353,795. Special events last year grossed over $194,000 led by our Gala, “Nautical Nights,” that grossed $134,328 including $13,400 to Faculty Professional Development; Big Flea and Field Day at $38,715; and Mill Mountain Day at $21,453 (and we donated $3,068 to the Zoo).

The CrossWalk program received $167,500 for scholarships, operating expenses, and a gift given by Richard Bell and Toni Clark to renovate the CrossWalk space and outfit the program with furniture, fixtures, and technology to serve the needs of our students.

We completed the Inspiring Minds campaign, and the balance of the funds left over from the renovation of Eaton Hall was repurposed to repair and resurface most of our driveway and parking lots.

Thank you for your dedication and commitment to North Cross School. We welcome your ideas for strengthening our incredible community of alumni, parents, and friends.

North Cross School is an independent, coeducational, college-preparatory day school that serves children from early childhood through twelfth grade. In all of its programs, North Cross School strives to promote in its students scholarship and a love of learning; character and a sense of personal integrity and responsibility; and a commitment to the good of the community and all within it. Although we prepare our students to enter the finest colleges and universities in the country, we understand that such preparation is of greatest use when it provides for our students the personal and intellectual skills to lead full and meaningful lives. In all respects, North Cross School endeavors to be true to its motto: Veritas Vincit — Truth Triumphs.
