Cut-Off BladesAllied’s Abrasive Cut-Off Blades are specially formulatedfor metallurgical sectioning. Aluminum oxide (Al2O3),silicon carbide (SiC), diamond and CBN (cubic boronnitride) abrasives are offered in various bond types forsectioning a wide variety of materials. Choosing the rightblade for the right material is crucial in reducing thermaland structural deformation.Resin bonded blades cut cooler with less resistance andfriction and do not emit a burned rubber odor as withrubber bonded blades.Rubber bonded blades are ideal for productionenvironments where durability and longer life are desired.

Rubber/resin bonded blades offer both durability andcooler cutting characteristics.Metal bonded blades (diamond) provide longer blade lifeand durability for less critical surface finish requirements.Protective arbor inserts are supplied on resin and rubber/resin blades. All blade arbor holes fit BOTH 32 mm and1¼" spindle arbors. All blades are precision ground toslightly less than the stated diameter to universally fit allmakes and models of cutting machines. Blotters aresupplied to shield vibration from the metal flange and helpprotect the blade from breaking during use.

Individual Pressure HoldersIndividual Pressure functionality allows as few as one or up to multiple samples to be prepared simultaneously. Theadvantage of individual preparation is that it allows removal of any number of samples from the grinding/polishing operationwithout affecting balance of the system, as it does when using Central Pressure. It is also ideal for applications where smallgeometry and site-specific cross-section requirements make alignment of more than three (3) samples to a common planeextremely challenging, or when preparing fragile materials.

MultiPrep™ AccessoriesA wide variety of fixtures and accessories are available for use with either 8 or 12 inch systems. Cam-locking interfaceoffers tool-free attachment and removal for ease of use. All fixtures are made from high-performance aluminum and stainlesssteel for corrosion resistance; precision machined and lapped; and heat and surface treated for long life and durability.Contact Allied for custom design and manufacturing requirements.

MultiPrep™ SystemsThe MultiPrep™ System enables precise semiautomatic sample preparationof a wide range of materials for microscopic (optical, SEM, TEM, AFM, etc.)evaluation. Capabilities include parallel polishing, precise angle polishing, site-specific polishing or any combination thereof. It provides reproducible sampleresults by eliminating inconsistencies between users, regardless of their skill.

The MultiPrep™ eliminates the need for handheld polishing jigs, and ensuresthat only the sample makes contact with the abrasive. It maintains

geometric orientation of the sample relative to the abrasive plane duringpolishing, allowing quantification of material removal; rate of polish

can be monitored, and total amount removed can be preset. The polishing machine provides the power supply necessary tooperate the MultiPrep™ positioning device, and features acontrol panel used to activate the MultiPrep’s™ functions.Platen rotation speeds range from 5 to 350 RPM, in eitherclockwise or counterclockwise direction. Touch-pad switchescontrol all functions, with a numerical keypad to program platenspeed, timer, oscillation and rotation settings. The system uses water as the standard coolant; however, automatic drip or dosing systems are available to apply abrasivesuspensions and/or lubricants.

Cross-Sectioning ToolUsed to cross-section small, unencapsulated samplessuch as ICs and other electronic devices. The handheld tool’s unique design is stable, well-balancedand has a low center of gravity to avoid rocking duringpolishing. Adjustable Teflon™ feet are used to align thesample with the desired polishing plane. The cross-sectioning paddle is attached using a cam-locking system(no tools needed), allowing quick, easy paddle removal forsample inspection and exact repositioning throughout thepolishing procedure.

TEM Wedge PolisherUsed to thin materials to electron transparency for TEMobservation. The rear micrometer heads allow radial or axial(wedge) angle adjustments in the sample, and the fronthead provides support when observing samples using aninverted microscope. Non-rotating micrometer heads areavailable to eliminate faceting of Delrin feet. The cross-sectioning and Pyrex paddles attach using acam-locking system (no tools needed), allowing quick, easy removal for sample inspection and exact repositioningthroughout the polishing procedure. The small Pyrexfootprint reduces planarization time due to less surfacearea making contact with the abrasive.

Polycrystalline Diamond

Monocrystalline Diamond

Diamond CompoundsAllied diamond compounds are specifically formulated formetallographic sample preparation and offer a higherconcentration of diamond compared with suspensions. They are water soluble and compatible with glycol oralcohol based lubricants. Diamond compounds typically areused as a stand alone product or a “base” before applyingdiamond suspension to polishing cloths.

Diamond PolishingDiamond is preferred for most polishing applications whencompared with other abrasives. Although diamond is morecostly per unit, the amount used or required to polish issubstantially less by a greater factor than the difference inprice in most cases. Diamond also cuts faster, requiringless time to achieve an improved surface finish and producea more accurate representation of microstructure with fewerartifacts (smearing, scratches, etc.).

Polycrystalline Diamond hasmany more cutting surfaces perparticle, resulting in higher removalrates. As it cuts, it breaks down inits original shape, allowing for finerfinishes in less time than whenusing monocrystalline diamond.Because polycrystalline has nocleavage planes, it cannot splinterlike monocrystalline diamond. Itcauses less sub-surfacedeformation, and is excellent whenpolishing samples composed ofdifferent materials/hardness.Monocrystalline Diamondprovides a cost effective means forgood stock removal and finish. Ithas a slightly irregular shape withmultiple cutting edges, and isrecommended for generalapplications wherepolycrystalline’s features are notrequired.

Magnetic SystemMagnetic system polishing cloths feature a thin, permanently laminated flexible rubber backing withmagnetic properties that adhere to all magnetic platens ormagnetic bases applied to standard platens. This easy-to-use system reduces the number of platens required andimproves operational efficiency, while offering the sameperformance as adhesive backed cloths.Reasons to consider magnetic system: Ease of interchangeability (reduced lifting of heavy

platens) Reduced investment (platen cost is minimized) Safety (no sharp edges eliminates cut injuries) Ease to use (tool-free removal) Works with ANY magnetic platen

Support PlatesStainless steel support plates allow adhesive backed cloths/abrasive discs to be changed quickly and easily during thepolishing procedure when using magnetic platens.

Polishing ClothsA wide range of woven, non-woven and napped (flocked)polishing cloths are available for fine grinding or coarse, intermediate and final polishing of all materials. They areavailable either with adhesive backing for any standard platen,or with Allied’s new “Magnetic System” backing, allowinguse with any magnetic platen.Woven: Woven cloths feature low compression, applyingeffective pressure to the loose abrasive particles for maximummaterial removal and flatness/planarity. The cross-weavepattern is ideal for fine grinding, coarse and intermediatepolishing.Non-woven: Non-woven cloths also feature low compressionwith softer surfaces, better suited for intermediate and finalpolishing of soft non-ferrous metals, ferrous alloys andpolymers/plastics.Napped (flocked): Made from various length fibers and fabricstiffness. They are used for final polishing as the flock pattern“brushes” the sample to clean and remove intermediate andcoarse polishing scratches. Stiff/rigid fibers are commonlyused for polishing soft metals and materials.
