Why August: Osage County?
Because of the mutual persistence of hope and gaper’s delay. (Up north, we call it “gaper’s delay.” Down here, it’s called “rubber necking.” The words are different but the impulse universal — to stare at a wound. ideally, the wound of another.) Because of the mutual persistence of hope and gaper’s delay, we continue to return home — drawn into the vortex of all things familial by some deeply human inability to quit hoping and gaping; to families who we hope have magically morphed into Norman rockwellian paragons of warmth in our absence —
families who will, with profound and daunting consistency, wound.
howard Starks, who wrote the poem that gave this play its name has a piece called “Family rites” — where he talks of the dangers of recall, when home and family are in the mix:
We mostly leave it closed, the box that once held Dad’s Sunday Stetson for even images of joy can hurt. (Innocence when recalled harms careful balances.)
And some of the faces — solemn for the camera speak of hopes and fears we’d rather not recall — make dense in us the shadowy children we once were.
our earliest stories in this art form are of families. And they are cautionary tales of wounds inflicted and wounds repeated that we collectively label “tragedy.” And yet the people who began this odd act of memory and imagination shared by actors for audiences chose the setting of the home and hearth to tell their tragedies. of course, hanna and Barbera did the same with the “Flintstones,” so maybe stories of home can hold wounds and laughter both? maybe our moth to the flame insistence on returning to the homestead, to the bosom of the family is both for the warmth that flame might provide — not simply to play chicken with the possible incineration of our siblings and selves?
between us
Folks need to celebrate. Every culture has special days of thanks. Even amongst the deepest disasters and the hard-est times, we celebrate. The Cratchits sit together at a table on Christmas Eve with barely enough food to taste. Scrooge’s happiest memories are wrapped up in celebration—particularly the Fezziwig party. Fred proclaims the season the time of “the year when men and women seem by one consent to open their shut up hearts freely.” He will not allow his uncle to dampen his celebration.
Maybe this is one reason Scrooge’s story affects all of us. When we finally see Scrooge, perhaps the most humorless and sour character in literature, actually CELEBRATE—it lifts us up as well. Okay, maybe we should all take some time to celebrate the gifts this “tired old world” has given us.
I hope I haven’t ruined the ending for anybody. If there is anyone reading this who does not know the story—don’t worry—the story seems to hold up under repetition—just like the celebrations of our life!
Have a beautiful, celebratory holiday season!

2008| 2009 ALLIANCE THEATRE 5
Susan V. BoothJennings hertz, Jr. Artistic Director
8 ENcorEATlANTA.com
“We take a certain perverse glee in seeing other families unravel to see that ours aren’t as bad as we thought,” says Susan V. Booth, the Alliance Theatre’s Jennings Hertz, Jr. Artistic Director, who directs this production. “I hope this will afford a new threshold for how bad it can get.”
And the worse it gets onstage, the more the audience (and critics) seem to enjoy it. Written by Tracy Letts, August: Osage County, in 2008, won the Pulitzer
Prize for Drama, the Tony Award for Best Play and the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play. The New York Times called it “flat-out, no asterisks and without qualifications, the most exciting American play Broadway has seen in years.”
“It’s a dreamy actors’ play,” Booth explains. “There are 13 roles, and each one has serious meat on its bones. You don’t find that often. It is operatically pitched, and it’s old school capital-T theatre.”
A cAutionAry tAleBy kristi casey sanders
A ugust: Osage County is a seriously funny play about a seriously dysfunctional family. It’s hard to believe how many satisfying laughs can come from seeing incest, drug
addiction, emotional abuse and suicide unfurl onstage. But it can be explained with one word: schadenfreude, the pleasure one derives from another person’s misfortune.
AlliANcEThEATrE.org 9
Perhaps one reason why the roles are so richly drawn is because playwright Letts also acts, most famously with Chicago’s storied Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where he is an ensemble member. The Chicago Sun-Times has called Letts “an actor of such blistering intensity that you can almost feel the blood surging between his heart and brain.” He brought that passion to the Alliance Theatre stage during the 2003-2004 season, when he portrayed George in Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
Atlanta theatres have produced many of his plays, most recently Superior Donuts at Horizon Theatre Company. The graphic nature of his writing has earned him comparison to the filmmaker Quentin Tarantino, but Letts has said his true inspiration comes from Southern writers such as William Faulkner and Tennessee Williams.
“A colleague once described his work as Tennessee Williams on steroids,” Booth says. “It’s the human equivalent of a traffic accident in the same way that we all slow down and look. August: Osage County is a chance to look at one onstage.”
The Atlanta talent pool is so deep and skillful, Booth says, she could have cast the show handsomely many times over. But she had something specific in mind.
Each role is played by someone who brings considerable history and/or baggage from working in the tight-knit Atlanta theatre community. “I wanted
people with pre-existing, professional dysfunctional relationships to bring to the table,” Booth explains with a chuckle.
The cast includes artistic directors or founders Del Hamilton (7 Stages), Richard Garner (Georgia Shakespeare) and Carolyn Cook (Théâtre du Rêve); Tess Malis Kincaid of Georgia Ensemble
Theatre; Brenda Bynum, formerly of Theatre Emory; and such familiar Atlanta faces as Chris Kayser, Jill Jane Clements, Joe Knezevich, Bethany Anne Lind, Courtney Patterson, Diany Rodriguez, Andrew Benator and Bart Hansard.
During a recent family vacation, Booth found herself thinking about August: Osage County, and what she hopes the audience takes away from it. “I think we come to theater for a lot of reasons,” she muses. “To look for inspiration, to look for reminders of our own humanity ... We also use it as a cautionary tale. I just got back from taking my child to Disney World. [There] I was confronted with the question of why people go on roller coasters. It’s terrifying. I, personally, get nausea. Why do we pay for the privilege of having the bejeezus scared out of us? This is one of those experiences.”
“We take a certain perverse glee in seeing other families unravel to see that ours aren’t as bad as we thought.”

Why this play? After it won the Pulitzer and the Tony, the Atlanta community— patrons and artists — began to clamor for the Alliance to produce this fantastic acting tour de force.
Why Atlanta?Because Atlanta actors are every bit as good as that fantastic ensemble that premiered the play in chicago, and this is a chance to showcase to our city how skilled our acting talent is. Because we can get artistic directors from georgia Shakespeare and 7 Stages to act on our stage. Because this production is a celebration of our entire Atlanta theatre community.

Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre, recipient of the Regional Theatre Tony Award®, creates the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse people of all ages. Under the leadership of Jennings hertz, Jr. Artistic Director Susan V. Booth, the Alliance Theatre uses contemporary classics, field leading theatre artists and a commitment to premiere as the foundation for a national theatre with a local address. The theatre’s two stages host 200,000 adult and youth patrons each season, and the Alliance engages and educates students and teachers of all ages through its extensive training programs and commitment to providing a community forum for connection and dialogue.
The Alliance leads the national regional theatre field in the creation of significant American musicals and plays. This includes over 70 premieres that have enjoyed future lives in theatres across the country as well as Tony Award®-winning moves to Broadway: Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, Elton John and Tim rice’s Aida and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. Following their Atlanta premieres, the Alliance transferred Twyla Tharp’s Come Fly Away to Broadway for a critically acclaimed Tony Award®-nominated run while Sister Act: the Musical will arrive on Broadway this season after its run on london’s West End. The Alliance also originated the national tours of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and Bring in ‘da Noise, Bring in ‘da Funk as well as the World Premiere of Bring It On: The Musical.
The Alliance enjoys a national reputation for finding and developing Atlanta artists for the national stage, including New York Times bestseller Pearl cleage whose The Nacirema Society Requests the Honor of Your Presence at a Celebration of Their First One Hundred Years was the latest of cleage’s Alliance world premieres. Further evidence of the Alliance’s commitment to new work is its nationally recognized National graduate Playwriting competition, a cutting-edge program introducing student playwrights to professional networks across the country while producing the world premiere of the winning student’s work here at the Alliance. Work by past competition winners has gone on to be produced by theatres in New York, chicago, london, San Francisco and beyond.
The Alliance continuously brings Atlanta the finest talent and finest art—proving once again that the Alliance is where great theatre lives. The Alliance Theatre is a division of the Woodruff Arts center in Atlanta, georgia, which also houses the Atlanta Symphony orchestra, high museum of Art and Young Audiences.
Our MissionAs a leading national theatre, the Alliance Theatre sets the highest artistic standards, creating the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse people.

A Brief History

A midsummer night’s Dream
ClApif you believein FAiries
Brenda Bynum: Jill Jane and I worked together at the old Academy Theater in the late ’70s and early ’80s, and in the ’90s at Theater Emory, and have been friends all along.
Jill Jane Clements: I played Brenda’s mother in my first profession production in Atlanta at the Academy, Getting Out.
Brenda: And then, there’s Del. We’re fueled by our shared passions for Beckett (Happy Days) and Fugard (A Place for the Pigs) and mutual respect over many years — at least 30! We have shared a dressing room, and I have seen him naked onstage in a pig sty — albeit for me working without my glasses —alas, all the good stuff was no more than a pink blur. This is our third scripted marriage — or have I lost count?
del Hamilton: Brenda’s correct. I do love Beckett, and am in awe of the mysteries he unlocks when I get to perform his texts. As to what she did or did not see while gleefully whipping
my naked body with a stick night after night, well, I must defer to her sense of taste and her kind disregard for the sight of my full splendor.
Jill Jane: I got to stage-manage Del in Joe Chaikin’s Waiting for Godot at 7 Stages, and we traveled to The Hague for a Samuel Beckett Festival. Brenda was there too! What a ball we had in Holland!
BetHany anne lind: Jill Jane has played my mother, grandmother, and now my great aunt — all within the last year! Also, she helped my husband and me with some landscaping because she has this genius green thumb thing going on. I have a thumb of death.
tess malis KinCaid: I first worked with Bethany Lind in Steel Magnolias at Georgia Ensemble. I had to do a bridal “up-do” to her hair every night, and she never once complained about all the hairspray. I love that girl — she’s a rock star.
As longtime members of the Atlanta theatre community, the actors in this cast have known and worked with each other for years. We thought it only fitting to ask them to reminisce (or dish) about their own “family baggage.”

RichaRd GaRneR: One incident I remember was a rare time when I was acting on the Georgia Shakes stage, in a production of Twelfth Night. I went up on a line, and Chris started to give me some help. I thought I had the line, so I actually waved him off. And, that damn line never came. Lesson learned: when Chris Kayser offers a helping hand on stage, don’t wave it away.
diany RodRiGuez: I’ve only worked with a handful of my fellow cast members before, almost six years ago, as an intern at Georgia Shakespeare.
couRtney PatteRson: I DO remember that the only thing Diany really ate was microwave Hormel chili with one packet of sugar stirred in. Surprisingly enough, I had to clean her vomit off the floor
one night in the dressing room before a show. Huh. It was fine, though. I had been a bartender for several years so I was pretty much desensitized.
andRew BenatoR: Greatest moment I had with Courtney was in Boeing, Boeing at the Aurora. It involved her high-heeled shoe unintentionally sailing into the audience. Classic!
couRtney: Andrew is one of my favorite people. He threw me under the bus once in a show. He did something hilariously unexpected and made me break. — Totally unprofessional, I know, but as the audience was laughing AT me — and my pride was literally shriveling before their eyes - he raised his hands in victory! Claimed it was some Comedia clown pose. Nice, Andrew. Real nice.

Where did you get that healthy glow?
We hear you believe in taking care of yourself inside and out. That you get heart and lung cancer screenings. And that you take advantage of the latest technology, like digital mammography.
During your pregnancy, you took childbirth and early parenting classes. And when your baby was born, you had your very own team of nurses.
You even got rid of fibroid pain through the expertise of the Fibroid Care Program.
We know your secret. And we’re sharing it so everyone can now say, “Hello, WellStar.”
We believe in life well-lived.
Hello, gorgeous.
