EditoMarch in Melbourne is described as marvellous: mild weather and nu-merous cultural, sporting and gas-tronomical events for everyone. The French Film Festival, organised by the Alliance française in Melbourne from 4 - 21 March, has been a high-light for more than two decades. The program includes a record 43 films this year. Three French direc-tors are eagerly awaited, includ-ing Jean-Pierre Jeunet, director of Amélie, who will be present at the opening ceremony. It's also the first time that a closing ceremony has been featured. Full program details are in this edition.

Also taking place soon: a Jeudi Jazzy tribute concert to Serge Gainsbourg, an exhibition by young French pho-tographer Vivien Racault, and in conjuction with Francophonie Month celebrations, an homage to Franco-phone cinema.

This is a retrospective of one of the first successful directors to emerge from the broadly defined milieu of the French New Wave, Jacques Demy (1931-1990).This series of specially imported 35mm prints features most of his key works. Demy's films are mostly tender, capricious sto-ries of love found, lost and fleet-ingly regained, that are told with an exhilarating command of film rhythm.

Their first Australian tour in 2008 saw this 9-piece band sell out each show, with audiences screaming for more. They are back in the country to launch their new album, La Belle Etoile (Cartell/Inertia) and pass on their infectious energy to the audienc-es. Their music is laced with ska, gypsy, rock, vaudevillian antics, dancehall and reggae. As befits a band with such a name, their exploits include police chases, beatings and imprisonment in Irish jails, and Muslim carnival processions in Syria. They must be seen to be understood..Singers David Baruchel and Manu Nectoux have devised a racy sound fuelled mainly on punk energy and on pulsating defiant social anthems sung in French and English – sometimes within the same song.8.00pm Wed 10 March

Over the years, Melbourne audi-ences have seen some of the fin-est baroque singers on the world stage perform with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra. That tra-dition continues this year with the Melbourne debut of French su-perstar Philippe Jaroussky. This remarkable vocal athlete with ‘the tone of an angel and the virtuosity of the devil’, will open the Brandenburg season in spectacular fashion with Vivaldi’s Olympian inspired music, accom-panied by the 2009 ARIA Award winning Orchestra on period in-struments. Likened to the great castrati of the 18th century, Jaroussky will have audiences soaring on a voice of ‘startling beauty’, as he performs exquisite Handel and Vivaldi arias. When Artistic Direc-tor Paul Dyer first invited France’s Opera Singer of the Year to Aus-tralia, this formidable counter-tenor drew sell-out crowds and rave reviews. Now he returns to the Brandenburg stage, to launch their first Melbourne subscription series, in a night of crystal notes and breathtaking brilliance!

Event Horizon brings together a selection of recent and new pho-tographic, video, painting and in-stallation works by a selection of Australian, French and Belgian artists. This exhibition uses the idea of the horizon as a means through which to establish our physical and temporal environ-ment and hinges upon the explor-atory advances in space travel of the late 1960s. Event Horizon will be accompanied by a catalogue, a series of artist presentations and a forum by leading astro-physicists and deep space pho-tographers. Acclaimed French artist Pierre Huyghe will present his video work One Million King-doms (2001) and Mathieu Briand will present works from his Ubiq project (2007). Paris-based Bri-and will exhibit his work as well as being involved in a special art-ist presentation during which he will discuss his artistic practice and offer a wider perspective on the work of contemporary French artists.

Omega is an exhibition that will ex-amine the aesthetic values of new and marginal religious movements through the works of a select group of high profile and respected con-temporary artists. This exhibition will be a unique opportunity to in-vestigate the role spirituality plays in contemporary art today.

The concept for this exhibition came about whilst the curator, Tony Gari-falakis, was on an Australia Council residency at ISCP (International Studio and Curatorial Program) in New York last year. The idea de-veloped while viewing the works of French artists Alain Declercq and Jeanne Susplugas and Mexican artist Joaquin Segura (fellow ISCP artists) and through discussions with them on the subject of religion and art. This exhibition will be an innovative and fresh look at a long-neglected subject in contemporary art. Participating artists will also en-gage in a number of ways with the general public, students and aca-demic staff in the form of artist talks, forums and tutorials.

Who is Vivien Racault? I’m not your average artist who trained at Fine Arts school. In fact, I dabble in the arts, social sciences research - par-ticularly on literature - publishing, mul-timedia, advertising, training, graphic design, photography and music…My photographs are as a result domi-nated by a writer’s discourse while in my music a filmmaker’s vision actually becomes evident. In my exhibitions, these categories always give way to a coherent and structured world where reason, the imagination and the senses can be satisfied.I try to be faithful to my romantic and pre-marxist vision of the ‘creator’ artist, and try to avoid imposing a hierarchy on various cultural forms. There are

references in my work to the Bible, art history and modern science, but also to the ‘B-grade’ series of the 1950s, social networks and reality television. I’m ac-tually more of a ‘creator of worlds’ than an artist. Does your work fit into a particular aesthetic tradition? I seek to develop an œuvre which is part of the great cosmogonic tradi-tion, from our civilisations’ founding creation myths to the personal myths of Baudelaire and Lovecraft. From a more formal point of view, in terms of photog-raphy, I think I come closer to a specific pictorial tendency in modern photog-raphy, which you can find in the works of Gregory Crewdson and Cindy Sher-man, or even filmmakers such as David Lynch. I like fantastical art in general.

What links you to Reunion island?

I was born and grew up on Reunion is-land, which is near Madagascar. As all my family lives there, it is my centre, my origin, and I suffer when I’m away for too long. It’s a magnificent island whose beauty lies in its contrasts: the saturated colours, the massive craggy hills bathed in shadows and light, the vegetation’s incredible vitality, the violence of the elements and random events, the overpopulation... But also the tranquil cool of thousands of gullies irrigating the volcanic earth, the way of life of the creole people who maintain a close connection to nature. I owe the core of my imagination to Reunion Is-land, as well as my palette of colours and the chiaroscuro in my photographs.

What is the theme of the exhibition to be held at the Alliance Française de Melbourne and what are your plans for the future? I’ll present a multimedia exhibition en-titled Between Plant and Ghost at the Alliance française. It will be a fantasti-cal poetic and critical reflexion on the notion of evolution. Specifically, the radical transformation of our conscious-ness and of our connection to the world, lead on by the dematerialisation proc-ess which has characterised the human story since its beginning.Besides that, for a year I’ve been work-ing on an artists’ book entitled Six zhèrs lo soir (‘Six o’clock in the evening’), and which will be devoted to fantasy tales written in creole by Emmeline Payet-Coupama, along the lines of Extraor-dinary Stories by Edgar Allan Poe. I’m in charge of the book’s graphic design and the photographs that will illustrate each story. At a future date, I hope to work on Origi-ne, which will constitute the second part of a triptych begun with my exhibition Mystères (‘Mysteries’).

A l'Alliance française je présenterai une exposition multimédia appelée Between Plant and Ghost.

tiPs to make the most of youR leaRning exPe-Rience1 Experiment and take risksLeave perfectionism at the door and allow yourself to make mistakes because you will learn from them.

2 Set realistic expectationsIt takes time to become profi-cient in any language and ex-pect periods when you do not seem to be making any pro-gress at all.

3 Be proactive and organi-sedKeep track of your achieve-ments (last week, I learnt how to... I am now able to say...)

4 Study frequentlyIt is more efficient to break study time into smaller chunks than study infrequently for ex-tended periods of time. Try to do a few homework exercises every second day rather than doing all the homework the night before the class.

5 Enjoy French cultureDo not miss an opportunity to practice, either at the Alliance, at home or while going out. Say ‘bonjour’ to our recep-tionists, listen to the French news, visit French restaurants in Melbourne or take a trip to New Caledonia!

conDitions of enRolmentFeesEnrolment is not confirmed unless payment is made in full before the first lesson of the session. Any student who has paid for a course and who withdraws at least 5 working days prior to the commencement of that course will be entitled to a refund less a 20% processing fee. Application for a refund must be addressed in writing to the Director. The Alliance Française cannot be held responsible for students’ changes in work commitments or personal circumstances. Please note that fees cannot be refunded or transferred if a student cancels his/her enrolment less than 5 working days prior to the commencement of that course or once the term has started. Course fees cannot be transferred to private les-sons. Fees do not include textbooks unless otherwise specified. All prices are inclusive of GST.

cLassesThe Alliance Française reserves the right to cancel or reorganise classes. Minimum class size is 5. For classes with 4 students, the course fee remains the same but the duration of the course is reduced. (20h courses to 15h, 18h courses to 13h30, 15h courses to 12h). The smaller class size allows more per-sonal attention and the course program remains identical and will be covered at a faster pace. If a fifth student enrols, the class duration will return to normal. In the case of cancellation students may request a transfer to another class, a credit note or a full refund of fees paid. Please note: classes will not be held on Victorian public holidays but will be rescheduled to a suitable time within the session.

les gens De la RizieRe (Rice PeoPle) cambodia mon 3 may / 6.30PmDirected by Rithy Panh1994 - 130 mins (with Engl subtitles)

This is the story of Vong Poeuv, his wife Yim Om and their seven daughters. Their lives, their joys, their beliefs and their survival are dictated by rice growing. A banal incident occurs, transforming the cycle of life into a cycle of death. In Cambodian refugee camps, when children are asked where rice comes from, they answer: "from U.N lorries". They have never seen a ricefield. One day, these children will have to learn to live in Cambodia, in other words, they will have to learn to cultivate, to plough and to work the land. This film shares this way of life, demonstrating the fragile equilib-rium on which it lies and the free-dom it represents.

west BeyRouth Lebanonmon 19 aPriL / 6.30PmDirected by Ziad Doueiri1998 - 100 mins (with Engl subtitles)

In April 1975, civil war breaks out. Beirut is partitioned along Muslim/Christian lines. Tarek is in high school, making Super 8 movies with his friend Omar. At first the war is a lark: school has closed, the violence is fascinat-ing, getting from West to East Beirut is a game. His mother wants to leave, but his father refuses. Tarek spends time with May, an orphaned Christian living in his building. By accident, Tarek goes to an infamous brothel in the war-torn Olive Quarter, where he meets its legendary matron, Oum Walid. He then takes Omar and May there using her underwear as a white flag for safe passage. Family tensions rise. As he comes of age, the war moves inexorably from adventure to tragedy.

hyÈnes (hyenas) senegaLmon 12 aPriL / 6.30PmDirected by Djibril Diop Mambety1992 - 110 mins (with Engl subtitles)

A once-prosperous Senegalese village has been falling further into poverty year by year until the village’s elders are reduced to selling town possessions to pay debts. Linguère, a former resi-dent and local beauty, now very rich, returns to the village of her birth. The elders hope that she will be a benefactor to the vil-lage. To encourage her generos-ity, they appoint Dramaan, a local grocer, as mayor—he who once courted her and will now try to persuade her to help. In fact, Lin-guère has returned with the inten-tion of sharing her millions with the village but only in return for an unexpected action. This plot twist brings human folly and cynicism into sharp focus.
