The Pearisburg First United Methodist Church Relay team, Eternal Flame, kicked off this year with a Souper Bowl Luncheon and Dessert Auction on Su- per Bowl Sunday. During February team members participated in the “Feb- ruary is Love” campaign to sell luminaria bags, to “honor” and “remember” loved ones. During this time 181 luminarias were sold. Plans are being made to have a drive thru lumi- naria service to light up the names of those held dear. These luminarias will also be displayed at the New River Valley Relay event. Last year for the lu- minaria ceremony in the church everyone was hon- ored to have Alice Dowdy, one of the organizers of the first Giles County Relay event, as the guest speaker. Alice continues to be pas- sionate for the Relay for Life activities. Last year, and years before, she has organized a luminaria event in her neighborhood and raised money that she has turned in to the American Cancer Society.
